Personal Best (1982)
Personal Best was the first time I'd seen girl-on-girl action, and was the catalyst for my own exploration of homosex.
The film was part of a breakthrough cycle of mainstream Hollywood studio movies featuring gay partnerships and drag characters, including Making Love (1982), Cruising (1980), Victor Victoria (1982), Tootsie (1982) and Partners (1982).
Did you see Personal Best growing up?

I loved hearing "You Make Loving Fun" by Fleetwood Mac and "What a Fool Believes" by The Doobie Brothers during the party scene.

With a recent Oscar nom, Mariel was poised to be a star. This film didn't perform well, and stalled that.

It's really interesting how strongly she resembles her two sisters. And her daughter looks so much like those three, too.
Margaux:

Margaux has the most similar facial structure and features as Ernest.

The real life Dorothy Stratten, who Mariel played in STAR 80, was so lovely.

Drag is unrelated to homosexuality. Might as well say gay partnerships and elderly characters. TOOTSIE, for instance, is explicitly homophobic.

Margaux was beautiful. I was just looking her up. She died in a studio apartment in Santa Monica.

Margaux was a great model...poor actress.
She should have stayed in New York.

Who was Mariel sleeping around with at that time? Robert Towne?

I loved Mariel and Margaux. Margaux was so beautiful, but talentless, yet her start vehicle Lipstick gave us Mariel.
The lesbian lover of Mariel in Personal Best was a real athlete, I believe. She was dull and wooden.
Personal Best also showed my first full frontal male nudity of, whatever his name was.... Lol. Kenny Moore. His IMDb movie filmography is overflowing with 3 movies to his credit.

R18 yeah they opened Sam's Cafe on either 3rd or 2nd Ave. it was around a good decade I'd say - I went there a few times with my family?
Was she ana? She was always a pretty big boned girl.

I'm surprised that you were inspired to have sex with a man by two women, OP.

Margaux and Mariel in "Lipstick" (1976).

R21 She ate only peanut butter and honey sandwiches for a year when she was a teen, while her mother was dying, then only raw vegetables for a year after that. So she had a f-ed up way of controlling food.

It was shocking to me because I never saw women lezzing each other before, or saw full frontal pussy or cock before. I didn’t like seeing the pussies at all. What a weird role for a straight woman to pick in the early 80s, it was so explicit.

The Hemingways are America’s nudest literary family. Both sisters and Mariel’s daughter have done full frontal.
I remember the Playboy magazine feature on Personal Best that my dad had because it had an ass shot of the guy in the film. For some reason this interested me more than all of the women in the magazine.

Rex Reed said this movie made it seem like lesbianism can be picked up in a locker room, not unlike athletes foot.

It's such a bad movie. However progressive its intentions, the lame script and acting sink it.

I remember Personal Best and Making Love were out at the same time and it was a big deal in the media about gay films. Making Love seemed like an old fashioned Hollywood movie.

At least she didn't go overboard, though.
