Golden State Killer/EARONS finally arrested and caught! PT. II

Police are confident DeAngelo is the Visalia Ransacker.

Did you guys forget about us?
by Anonymous | reply 3 | April 29, 2018 1:25 AM |
Is he an alkie? Here's what someone on the EARONS subreddit wrote:
]We know he was arrested for a DUI in 2012. We know he has a shed full of beer cans. A facebook user theorized the following:
"His demeanor & appearance in court was NOT AN ACT. Since I was a physician over 30 yrs I notice possible medical issues like the lesion on his posterior right scalp and spot on left eyebrow area along with his drugged appearance. Flat affect. I also noted his face is wide, note the very enlarged Parotid Glands. My experience is many times this can be associated with excessive alcohol intake. I am wondering if he is an alcoholic. If so, being in jail would be a risk for alcohol withdrawal symptoms. To prevent severe agitation from alcohol withdrawal he could be given anti-anxiety med like Valium or Ativan. This could explain his drugged appearance. We want this guy to talk, not have a Rum Fit that could cause major problems. Alcohol withdrawal can be severe, cause seizures. We don't need a 72 year old man to end up in the neurosurgical unit. We had a saying when I was a medical intern...." If something is going to go wrong in the hospital, it's going to go wrong with an alcoholic."

Also in CA, the Zebra killings in the SF area, multiple perpetrators 15 to possibly dozens of victims. The sweetheart killings just outside of Sacramento in Davis in '80. A serial rapist was finally convicted a few years ago. His brother was somehow also involved. I don't know if he killed between 80 and apprehension.
Like the EAR, Gerald and Charlene Gallego were active in Sacramento during my jr high and high school years. Gradually, houses in the neighborhood started putting up iron bars on the windows Really scary times.
by Anonymous | reply 5 | April 29, 2018 1:26 AM |
So he didn't plead? They asked for a continuance? It was hard to hear video of arraignment...
by Anonymous | reply 6 | April 29, 2018 1:30 AM |
There’s also the little-known Gypsy Hill Killer, Rodney Halbower. I get the creeps driving through the stretch of Skyline — always pitch black and/or foggy at night — where he abducted a girl walking to 7-Eleven after dark.
by Anonymous | reply 7 | April 29, 2018 1:36 AM |
Don't forget the doodler.
by Anonymous | reply 8 | April 29, 2018 1:36 AM |
I'm fascinated by true crime. I read WAY too many books about it. If you want a really, really good book on investigating a serial killer I highly recommend Trace Evidence. It stays completely away from sensationalism yet remains riveting. I couldn't put it down. It really gets down into the nitty gritty of foot work and forensics. Plus it covers the did she know? part.
by Anonymous | reply 9 | April 29, 2018 1:43 AM |
I also forgot Richard Chase, aka the Vampire of Sacramento, who drank his victims' bloods and cannibalized their remains. He struck around the same time as EAR/ONS. How lovely for poor Sacramento!
by Anonymous | reply 10 | April 29, 2018 1:44 AM |
The world knows he has a baby dick.

All due respect to the redditor physician, but do we really want this guy "to talk"? He's not a terrorist with inside information. He's a psycho who killed many years ago. We mostly want him under lock and key, whatever his condition.
by Anonymous | reply 12 | April 29, 2018 1:56 AM |
Also thank you to the OP for starting the second thread in an organized and timely manner.
It matters to us. Thanks, kiddo.
All due respect to the redditor physician, but do we really want this guy "to talk"?
I think the hope is he’ll confess to crimes he committed that have yet to be linked to him and help get them solved.
by Anonymous | reply 14 | April 29, 2018 2:02 AM |
I wonder what he did to stifle his urges after he stopped in '86. Someone in the other thread said that it's the same year DNA was first used to obtain a rape conviction. DeAngelo's described as being highly disciplined and over-controlled, so maybe he was able to exercise restraint over his urges. But I kind of doubt it. How long after the rapes did he call and taunt his victims? It's been speculated that BTK tortured and killed animals. He was an animal control officer and people in the area complained about pets disappearing from fenced in yards. After his capture, LE found dog collars and tags in his home. Then he tried to toy with authorities through correspondence that ultimately led to his arrest.
by Anonymous | reply 15 | April 29, 2018 2:08 AM |
You have to wonder if it's a little bit of karma that all three of his kids ended up being daughters. Makes you wonder if that ever, for even a few seconds, made him have regrets or any shred of remorse for his own crimes against young girls and women.
by Anonymous | reply 16 | April 29, 2018 2:10 AM |
R16 You're not really familiar with how psychopaths/sociopaths work, do you?
Not saying they were as evil as he was, but think about how Bill Cosby and Harvey Weinstein both have FOUR daughters. They don't give a shit about other people's girls.

Don’t forget the Solvang serial killer Thor Christiansen !
Another case “solved” not by the cops (who actually interviewed Christiansen as a suspect) but the public.

Proud of California for being the most twisted serial killer state. No other state comes close.
by Anonymous | reply 22 | April 29, 2018 2:48 AM |
r22, that's because California has the largest population.
by Anonymous | reply 23 | April 29, 2018 2:55 AM |
To be fair R22, a good amount of California's serial killers hail from elsewhere. Charles Manson, Richard Ramirez, and Randy Kraft are from out of state. I am sure a fair amount of others, too.
by Anonymous | reply 24 | April 29, 2018 2:55 AM |
R4, depending on the jail he’s in, he may or may not be getting Valium for DTs.
Most jails don’t give a fuck, but this one might.
by Anonymous | reply 25 | April 29, 2018 3:19 AM |
Where in the world are his eye brows?
by Anonymous | reply 26 | April 29, 2018 3:47 AM |
It's crazy and discouraging to think that without the DNA site, this case never would have been solved. This guy was on no one's radar. Decades of police investigations and journalism and cybersleuthing by the Jessica Fletchers on Proboards didn't even get close.
by Anonymous | reply 27 | April 29, 2018 5:09 AM |
Makes you wonder if Zodiac was a cop, too?
by Anonymous | reply 28 | April 29, 2018 5:23 AM |
depending on the jail he’s in, he may or may not be getting Valium for DTs.
DTs can be fatal and often are. It's probably more complicated in someone of his age. If the DA wants him to talk or be cooperative in any way, they need to keep him alive so, of course, they'll medicate him. Who knows what other shenanigans he may have been up to after '86 when he stopped his EAS/ONS activities? I wondered upthread what he did to stifle or displace the urges that undoubtedly did not go away. Did he adopt a new MO and keep up his criminal behavior on vacations or sojourns out of state? There are probably dozens, if not hundreds of inquiries from other jurisdictions pouring into Sacramento to see if this guy might have been their perpetrator. This guy could easily have been responsible for several rapes on a weekend in Vegas if he cleaned up his act post-DNA
by Anonymous | reply 29 | April 29, 2018 5:33 AM |
Did Zodiac and this guy operate in the same time frame?
by Anonymous | reply 30 | April 29, 2018 5:39 AM |
Not that we know of. Zodiac had long finished the criems the police think he committed by the time the EAR/ONS was operating.
by Anonymous | reply 31 | April 29, 2018 5:42 AM |
After DNA testing came in and he stopped killing and raping in his home territory... I wonder if satisfied his dark urges by going to countries where sex tourism is big?
Or if he kept it all in the family?
Probably both.

Seeing a man with a large penis having actual, satisfying, unforced sex with a woman, R36?
by Anonymous | reply 37 | April 29, 2018 6:45 AM |
Porn is to blame? It may have been all of his shipmates aboard the USS Canberra who took showers with him and he saw he was not just one or two standard deviations below the mean. Now, of course, I have to wonder if the SPD is asking the Navy if there were violent assaults or murders when he was on liberty in various Asian ports. This would be touchy as the USN would have to admit they harbored a rapist and transported him among various Asian ports of call. Someone suggested that he may have gotten his rocks off on illicit Thai tours or something similar. He would have known from his experience there.
by Anonymous | reply 38 | April 29, 2018 6:54 AM |
r38, somehow, even despite your feverish and vivid fantasies, I seriously doubt any psychologist ever has seen a case where someone has ever become a prolific serial rapist, torturer, and murderer just because his penis size was too small.
by Anonymous | reply 39 | April 29, 2018 7:00 AM |
Do you have a better explanation than a man feeling inadequate among his peers, R39? Or, better yet, any empirical evidence that he did not have freakishly small genatalia (despite numerous victim descriptions) and had other motives? And your speculation about these motives that do not arise about his own feelings of inadequacy? If you have better or more salient expertise, now is your chance to chime in and possibly help to solve a crime. Could you possibly put up or shut up?
Feverish? Vivid? Your overly-facile, loaded projections suggest you have issues, sir, not just the EAR.
by Anonymous | reply 40 | April 29, 2018 7:14 AM |
If his tiny dick was the source of his shame and rage, then by committing rapes and getting caught he's let the entire world know that he's hung like a gnat!
Which is slightly karmic, but that's really pretty inadequate for a karmic takedown.
by Anonymous | reply 41 | April 29, 2018 7:28 AM |
He never imagined the DNA would catch up to him, despite all of his CJ and LE expertise. He stopped in '86 after all. Stupid relative had to post a DNA profile on an open source website...
by Anonymous | reply 42 | April 29, 2018 7:32 AM |
His MO was to stalk his victims for weeks, and become familiar with their homes. He wasn’t a sk who sought out sex workers or women who were out drinking in bars or clubs. He wasn’t one to socialize, keeping his interactions with the general public limited to his exposure at work. I doubt he went abroad to rape and kill others.
I believe he eventually targeted couples because he was always targeting something that he felt was elusive to him: a wife, a family, a marital home. Once he became more rooted in his own family life, the less he desired to punish those who had it. He was also aware that the heat was on, and he’d eventually fuck up, and get caught, and surely became aware of DNA preservation for future testing.
What is astounding to us is that this guy may have had the self control to stop, and we somehow erroneously believe that sk don’t. But they do.
Dennis Rader stopped for many years, and had he not made the mistake of sending a newspaper a CD, he might have gotten away with his crimes as well.
Some of these guys can stop, and they do.
by Anonymous | reply 43 | April 29, 2018 10:10 AM |
I agree r39. Most serial killers have a long history of enjoying sadistic and cruel behaviour that links back to childhood. Sometimes you’ll hear they had a thing for killing birds or local cats. They lacked empathy and concern for others even as children, so if some kid from school died they found the distress of the other kids around them baffling. So I doubt this whole thing was linked to having a small dick, since it probably wasn’t something he gave much thought to when he was 8. It may have contributed to his rage once he got older, but it’s unlikely to have been the be all and end all of his desire to rape and kill.
I think the breaking into houses while the husband was home was the thrill of the risk and the feeling of power. Rape is mostly about exerting power over another person, so there’s no greater show of power than making a woman’s husband powerless while he rapes her and the husband can’t do a thing about it.
And I have no doubt he liked the risk. Breaking in first, getting the layout of the house, hiding rope and the stuff he’d need to carry out the act, stealing trinkets. All of this increased his risk of being found out, of being seen and of being caught. It’s why he turned up to community meetings and then attacked people who turned up to the meeting. He liked taunting the cops and the danger of it.
And even up until recently he was prowling around a neighbours garage, speeding through intersections, drunk driving. This guy liked walking the line, liked flouting societies rules to see what would happen. Most of the time nothing happened to him.

Scroll down to see the cropped photo of when deAngelo was an Auburn cop. This is the only time that he looks like the Owen Wilson, blonde shaggy-haired police sketch (usually on the right side of the trio of drawings). He definitely looks like the sketch w/ the mustache.

Unlikely. In the video posted at OP, you can see at the top right corner, the brothers of some of his victims already at his arraignment. So at least some of the family members do want to see and hear everything that goes on with this trial.

by Anonymous | reply 61 | April 29, 2018 2:49 PM |
He started earlier than Richard Ramirez. They also didn't realize the murders were connected until relatively recently.
by Anonymous | reply 62 | April 29, 2018 2:52 PM |
Night Stalker most commonly refers to Richard Ramirez who killed in 1984-85.
With the exception of Janelle Cruz, this guy committed all of his rapes and murders before him.

"Seeing a man with a large penis having actual, satisfying, unforced sex with a woman, R36?"
Gotta love the datalounge - making EVERYTHING about penis size. Like the silly morons on the other thread claiming "Bonnie" left him because of his penis size (presumably she had seen his penis BEFORE they got engaged - this was the 1970s, not the 1870s and still got engaged to him anyway). And who the hell ever said the men he killed had big dicks, either?
by Anonymous | reply 64 | April 29, 2018 3:49 PM |
R64 most of the men he killed probably did have bigger dicks. His was unusually small. I agree that it is unlikely the cause of his psychopathy. From what I recall he started by raping women who lived alone or were home alone. The police warned women about this. Then he started attacking couples. I think it was more of a fuck you to the cops and a challenge, not a specific hatred of men. He would have started with married couples or single men if it was about that. He would had started with raping men or cutting their genitals if it was about his needle dick. He's a sadist, he gets off on hurting people, he kept finding more creative ways of hurting people.
by Anonymous | reply 65 | April 29, 2018 4:03 PM |
Harking back to the first thread: if Bonnie broke up with him because she started to think he was violent and creepy, why didn't she (or any of the girlfriends she no doubt confided her reasoning to) report this when her name came up during a rape in the area he lived in? I mean sure, there could be two or more violent nutters in Sacramento who had reason to cry over girls called Bonnie, but surely you'd think it could be at least a line of inquiry?
As for why there was so much misogynistic crime in the 70s, many of the reasons have already been covered in Thread 1, but surely a big one is that it was the era of women's liberation. All the nice little 50s and early 60s wifeys were disappearing and being replaced by bra-burning loud people who wanted your job and were aggressive in bed. Unsettling for most straight men, but even moreso for those whose psychology wanted women controlled and subjugated out of existence.

"if Bonnie broke up with him because she started to think he was violent and creepy, why didn't she (or any of the girlfriends she no doubt confided her reasoning to) report this when her name came up during a rape in the area he lived in?"
She MIGHT have sensed that he was a creep......but being a creep doesn't necessarily make you a serial killer.
by Anonymous | reply 67 | April 29, 2018 4:09 PM |
I thought I read somewhere that she married a wealthy man after breaking up with EAR/ONS, and moved out of California and/or the US.
by Anonymous | reply 68 | April 29, 2018 4:35 PM |
Creepy that he and Toronto gay serial killer are still alive. Wonder if they'll try to escape?
by Anonymous | reply 69 | April 29, 2018 4:38 PM |
Bonnie married an accountant who became wealthy. They moved to Italy and she had a blog. They divorced and she returned to CA.
by Anonymous | reply 70 | April 29, 2018 4:43 PM |
Was it reported in the press at the time that he talked about Bonnie during the attacks? I think Bonnie probably thought he was just your garden variety abuser. She was probably happy to be free of him. If she had an idea of how dangerous he was she might have been afraid of him. He could have threatened to kill her. If she had moved out of the area she wouldn't have known the EAR even existed. There was no internet then and serial crimes usually only got reported in national press when the criminal was a taunter or when he got caught. Serial rapes were less likely to gain national press than murders. Crimes committed in provincial cities were less likely to get reported than murders in media centers like NY or LA.
by Anonymous | reply 71 | April 29, 2018 4:45 PM |
Bonnie was a size queen.

I'm not convinced he stopped raping and killing. I believe he may have left the state or even the country for a time. But he never entirely stopped. I just don't see it. At least 45 rapes and 12 murders? That's a lot. There a re probably more. I also would like for him to talk. Whether he is interested in telling the truth or he lies, it will still give insight into how his mind works. He may even inadvertently tell on himself. I'm never in favor of suppressing. I want it all to come out.

No, it was not 23andme. It was GED, an open source database where people uploaded their profiles hoping to look for a genetic match, usually looking for a biological parent. There would be no need for a search warrant as would be the case w/23andme and other geneological websites like Ancestry.com.
And, no, they guy is not a retired police officer. He was FIRED from the Auburn police force (as noted numerous times across both threads) after attempting to shoplift dog repellent spray and a hammer from an area business.

Thousands of unsolved murders and rapes all around the country would instantly be solved if cops (current and former) were required to enter their DNA into a database. Countless numbers of the wrongfully convicted would also go free. Jack the Ripper and the Zodiac were probably cops too. The Long Island serial killer is also very likely to be a current or former cop.

Is it true Bonnie has gone into hiding? What is wrong with people. How is this her fault? She had a boyfriend, it wasn’t working out, she broke up with him. But now 40 years later people are blaming her because he turned out to be a raging psychopath. It’s not her fault he couldn’t let it go. He’s the loser who couldn’t get over it, he’s the rapist and murderer.

Look below--

By the way, for the person denigrating the websleuths above, they may be unemployed and they may be millennials (though most aren't, in my experience), but they were able to fill in/figure out many details that the cops didn't have the time to. Also, by posting this stuff on the web, they kept it there for posterity and for the perusal of anyone who was interested or might have specialized knowledge.
They are a wonderful resource.

I would like to know the evidence he was charged with in the Maggiore's slayings. He shot them. Did he leave physical evidence behind? I didn't know until today that Maggiore wasn't just an Airman, but he was an MP. It had been speculated that the EAR was casing the neighborhood when he came upon Maggiore who recognized him. Many speculated that EAR was in the Air Force and recognized Maggiore. Instead, he may have recognized him from joint task forces policing the area.

R124, There was a ski mask left at the scene, and ski masks are treasure troves of DNA -- sweat, hair, saliva, and epithelial cells. Most likely semen as well, as he had been very active in prowling the neighborhood in the weeks leading up to the Maggiore murders (and that night as well), peeping in windows and in even drawing on one woman's bedroom window with semen.
It's kind of irrelevant anyway because Sacramento County was just showboating with the Maggiore charges. If there were no egos involved they would have handed it over to Ventura or OC where he'll ultimately stand trial. For their purposes, even if there had been no DNA at all, a footprint from a shoe that matched those found at other crime scenes and a shoelace with a matching knot would have been enough to bring charges. It's not as if they'll ever have to try that case.

If, as has been suggested, D’Angelo had the self discipline to stop raping and killing - considering the number of his victims prior, I think that he or any serial killer is able to do that is scary.
Maybe he used booze to stifle the urges resulting in his theorised alcoholic state? Or maybe he suffered an injury or developed an illness that prevented him from continuing? IIRC, there was a case in real life with a serial rapist in I think D.C. (?) who just stopped. Most LE thought he died, but one officer couldn’t let it go, and years later managed to get DNA off original evidence and tracked down the rapist. Apparently he was run down at the time he was raping, wound up paralysed from the waist down, so no way to rape. When he was found he was a booze addled alcoholic.
As for potential victims outside CA - I’d hope they’d look into his travels foreign and domestic just to see if anything turns up. I heard that the Toronto Gay Serial Killer had property in Mexico he visited - I’d wager it’s a safe bet some poor locals wound up buried there if true.
Curious if anyone has read Patton Oswalt’s late wife’s book (sorry drawing a blank on her name and book title) and whether she was on the right track, remotely close, or no where near how this now has ended?
In earlier threads on serial killers, I believe a number of DL sleuths speculated the EAR/ONS could be LE. I believe in the recent DiscID program on the case, a few involved thought he had to have some military background too.
R95 - in NYC and out on the island, it has long been assumed that the Long Island Seeial Killer was LE - in fact it has been claimed that the commissioner/chief of police, the DA, and others that were arrested recently enough on corruption charges actually know who he is and covered it all up. Wouldn’t surprise me.

Yes, I’ve read it. No, it’s not very good- it was only half finished when she died. The book is repetitive and spends too much time inserting the author’s own drama into the narrative, and is a rehash of many other researchers’ work. It’s fine for a rundown for someone unfamiliar with the case, but only going in knowing that very little is her or the co-authors’ own work.
And much of her conclusions about this guy were completely wrong.

About tracking the Zodiac through DNA -- from the way it's described here, it appears that there are stamps and envelopes he used to send taunting letters that may be sitting around unexamined for potential DNA evidence, They were able get partial DNA from one stamp back in 2010, so it is likely he licked others.

I wonder if any law-enforcement agency is still working on the Zodiac cases, and would be willing to fund DNA comparisons? Because all the major suspects are dead, the only reason an agency would take the trouble would be for the publicity of finally solving a high-profile case.

I read several victim accounts of this creep's crimes. What a pathetic tool he was/is. He couldn't even get it up half the time to properly rape his victims.....and they all said he was hung like a fucking peanut. He had knives, but rarely used them---just made lots of threats to kill but never even cut anyone. He wore masks and gloves, but usually took them off at some point. He made frequent trips to the kitchen to eat mid-attack (wtf?). He seemed disoriented, disorganized and often cried to the victims, expressing regret. He had a slight build and was not strong. FFS, this dude was such a weak, sniveling, fucked up amateur, and yet he was never caught....and his victims rarely fought back. Why?
His MO was so consistent that people knew while being attacked that he was EARONS. Why was he so difficult to catch? And why were his victims so compliant, knowing he never killed anyone---only made empty threats? Maybe it's different these days. Now we're told to fight back with everything we've got. But back then it was assumed that the best way to survive an attack, no matter how incompetent. was to do anything the rapist tells you to do.

by Anonymous | reply 163 | May 2, 2018 6:57 AM |
During the period r162 describes, with multiple accounts of surviving victims, the EAR wasn't known to have committed any murders yet (except the one in Visalia which they hadn't connected). I know there is definitely one woman, only thirteen at the time, who, while she didn't exactly fight back, gave him a lot of attitude and says it was because she knew he hadn't killed any of his victims so he wouldn't kill her.
“I knew I wasn’t gonna let him have what he came for, and that was to have power over me by frightening me and have fear,” she said.
by Anonymous | reply 164 | May 2, 2018 7:43 AM |
Even if he hadn’t killed anyone yet would you want to provoke the guy who just broke into your house, raped you and threatened to kill you. Maybe a 13 year old who is young and lippy, but an older person who realises they’re in the company of someone seriously unhinged might also consider that if he’s behaving like a loon, by crying, eating, raping he might also be capable of mudering. And voila, he ended up adding murder to MO.
by Anonymous | reply 165 | May 2, 2018 7:52 AM |

Are you as stupid as Don Lemon who wondered why any of Bill Cosby's assailants hadn't tried to bite his penis off. Seriously? It's bad enough that your being raped and torn within an inch, but to provoke an assailant to kill you is supposed to be the valiant thing a woman is supposed to do if she is to survive? Think that through, if you are capable.

Uh, R166, please join us in the current century. The recommended course of action now is to fight back and fight hard--with everything you've got. Look for an advantage and escape. The latest research says that your chances of survival are no better if you are compliant. In fact, they are worse.
He tied the victims them up with shoe laces, FFS. Did his 40 some odd rape victims even 'try' to make a run for it when he was ransacking the house looking for spare change? Or when he stopped mid-rape to wolf down snacks in the kitchen? No, they didn't. And the male victims, who were laying down in another room with dishes stacked on their chests, did nothing as well. The perv told the men he would hear if the dishes fell and he would kill everyone. The male victims never moved a muscle, even though they knew this guy never killed anyone.

The WaPo link at r161 details how they put it all together, fascinating.
They actually didn't use any one person's uploaded public DNA database sample, directly. They took the killer's saved sample and matched it to several distant cousins, who they then cross-checked to trace back to a pair of common ancestors, from the early 19th century. From there they spent years painstakingly recreating an entire family tree of their descendants, in the many 1000s. When they got to the present-day generation they simply reviewed the results for the few men who fit a general profile, got a warrant for current DNA from them (one assumes from the discarded trash) and voila! exact match found. Brilliant.

Either you’re very young or have watched way too much TV r187.
If it was that obvious and easily solved why didn’t you solve it? Everyone had a tonne of information on the case. In fact, the zodiac killer is still out there, there’s lots of clues on that too. Maybe you should put yourself on the case. You’re obviously a born detective. Get back to us first thing tomorrow with Zodiac’s name. How hard can it be? Off you go.

R200 he might be somewhat sedated but I bet he can walk. He is just being ultra difficult. He’s going to make every last thing for them a struggle. Make them wrestle him into a chair, wheel him in there, mumble etc. This whole process will be like getting blood from a stone. But given half a chance he’d kill every last person in that room.

Why are you all being so disrespectful to Paul HoleS?????
1. It's HoleS! H-O-L-E-S!!!
2. R196, why are you asking if he'll be included in the pictures????? He's retired! Let the man have some peace! And by "tiny meat," are you implying that he's 90% vegetarian??? He's not! He's a MAN; he eats lots of red meat! He isn't like [italic]that[/italic]!!!
3. R197, he would never ruin anyone's lunch! I'm staring at my Paul Holes screensaver right now, and this meat-lovers pizza is going down just fine, thank you very much!!
4. R199, why would you have to envision his current condition???????? His picture is everywhere, and it's gorgeous!!! Even more gorgeous (not to mention lighter....praise Jesus!) than forbidden-hottie Juan Martinez, if I dare say so myself!!!
I'm reporting all of you to Tricia right now!! You think you're safe from her just because you're posting all of this nasty cr*p on DL????

R38 the navy was well aware of Fred Howard Coffey. He even was known to have molested an officers young daughter. The navy knew he was raping children and just kept moving him around to try to keep it from catching up with him.
If they were aware this guy was raping Asian women they not only wouldn't have cared they would have covered it up.

A defendant has no Fifth Amendment rights in his DNA. Likewise pictures of his penis for investigative or identification purposes. Obviously his attorney can object if they are taken in a manner that is unnecessarily intrusive or humiliating. Or if they are taken constantly, for instance.
I thought I read somewhere that if someone is in the medical unit of the jail then the policy is they are wheeled into court. That actually makes sense especially if they are under the influence of certain medications

McNamara. Not McCormick.
McNamara and Holes were friendly. I can’t recall how much they collaborated, but they did work together on some of her research.

McNamara devoted an entire whole chapter to Holes, riding around with him in a cop car to visit old homes and scenes of the crime.

The Zodiac killer will never be found, but I think the lay people who have researched different people as suspects, have touched on the killer, but just can’t prove it. Some of them have very strong arguments as to who is the killer. Series of small mistakes have made the Zodiac killings unsolvable.

It wasn't Arthur Leigh Allen (Graysmith fudged some of the "evidence" to make Allen seem like a better suspect than he was) and none of the people publicly named as Zodiac "suspects" fit at all. I think, like DeAngelo, it will turn out to be a guy who wasn't on anyone's radar

All the major official Zodiac suspects are dead, aren't they? So solving that case is more likely to be a matter of historical interest than actually bringing a killer to justice. I hope someone, somewhere, devotes some time and money to doing the genetic research.

by Anonymous | reply 234 | May 4, 2018 10:40 PM |
I agree R230 as I recall 1 of those victims fled the Bay Area because he was afraid the killer might come after him. I'm sure the living victims would love to know for sure if he's dead. There's also something to be said for clearing the names of the innocent suspects. They might be dead, but their relatives might like to get rid of the mark on their family.
by Anonymous | reply 235 | May 4, 2018 11:05 PM |
The impression that I had of Mageau (from the Graysmith book) is that he fled and wanted it all left in the past, and wanted nothing more to do with the Zodiac case. I guess who could blame him, he must have remained traumatized forever..
The other guy who was with Cecilia Shepherd came across as more cooperative and interested in capturing the killer.
by Anonymous | reply 236 | May 4, 2018 11:30 PM |
What about Jon-Benet then? Didn’t she have some unindentified DNA on her?
Yes, first collected from her underpants, then after a reexamination another sample was taken from her pjs. The two samples were deemed similar if not an outright match and were from an unknown male. It was this dna that lead to the DA apologizing to the Ramseys as it didn’t match anyone in the family.

by Anonymous | reply 239 | May 4, 2018 11:43 PM |
Well, they're doing DNA on the stamps of the Zodiak killer now. There are stamped envelopes from Jack the Ripper, so who knows? They maybe able (one day, when legalities are sorted) to tell us at least Jack's family.

There were also letters in the Black Dahlia case. No idea how well they’ve been preserved.
by Anonymous | reply 241 | May 5, 2018 12:48 AM |
The DNA in the JonBenet case was misrepresented from the start. I'll try to steer clear of the rabbit hole of how testing was actually handled in the nineties, and how it was then used by those outside the lab in those days, except to say that it was almost a forgone conclusion in law enforcement at that that mixed DNA was from two people.
I guess they didn't like being told by labs that the samples they submitted were much trickier composites of three or more people in which only the victim's could be clearly identified. Better to just pretend that things were moving in the right direction I guess; that's the innocent explanation. The other explanations range from confirmation bias to outright misrepresentation.
Re: the mixed samples collected from JB's underwear, they were told by the lab that the sample likely contained DNA from [italic]at least[/italic] two people. There was nothing even close STR profiling back then, and even now we're still not there (I have another long-winded post in the earlier thread. Search term: STRmix).
More than two would have rendered the sample completely useless, so they just jumped the gun and labeled it "Unknown Male #1" despite not even being able to come up with the ten markers needed to submit it to CODIS. In the early 2000's they did retest the sample and managed to come up with additional markers, but nothing came of it.
The DA, for whatever reason, wanted this sketchy sample had to have come from an unknown killer. Further testing of the underwear (and other items of clothing, including a pair of long johns) by Bode Tech couldn't replicate the earlier results but the DA decided to run to the Ramseys' defense anyway. What Bode did find was DNA from more than one person [italic]after[/italic] JonBenet's had been isolated and removed from the equation. Also, they determined that the Unknown Male #1 mixture could not be included or excluded as part of the long johns' samples. The whole thing is a mess.
All of that to say, there were more alleles found than could possibly have come from JonBenet and one unknown person. The whole thing is a mess and if there's enough of a sample left for testing, they really need to start from square one using STRmix, even though I'm not a fan of their business practices. It's really the best they can do at this point.

If you don't mind another question, how good is the chain of evidence/handling protocol at labs? I know government labs have been faulted, but what about the private ones?
I imagine this is the next frontier for smart defense attorneys.
by Anonymous | reply 249 | May 5, 2018 4:50 AM |
I'm not posting and talking on the phone simultaneously this time, so hopefully I can spare you the typos...
R249, I would say that it's much better than at government labs because at least the private labs are aware that they can be put out of business if they mess up too badly. In both private and government labs, human error is more of a problem than chain of custody. And by human error I mean things as unbelievable as a lab tech who when given saliva and semen samples from the [italic]same person[/italic], couldn't come up with a match!
When DNA comes up in casual conversation, people are sometimes taken aback by the very idea that mistakes can be made, because everyone has been so conditioned to think of DNA as this great infallible. Taken on its own, it is close to infallible. In the hands of a human being — even a competent, experienced one — who's being rushed through a huge backlog, things can go wrong. When government labs receive part of their funding based upon the number of successful convictions, things have the potential to go very wrong.
I've never met anyone who enjoyed working at a government lab. To hear them talk, it's a never-ending series of people/agencies who really, really, really want the profile to match the suspect they want it to match, and they want it yesterday. There's also too much familiarity. In a perfect world, there would be no interaction at all between law enforcement and the lab.
Overall, there's just a lot less stress and craziness at private labs.

Not to get too far off topic, but IIRC i read that the DNA in JonBenet’s clothes was some sort of minimal sample, maybe “touch DNA”?, that could’ve come from anyone including the Chinese peasant who packaged it for original sale. True?
by Anonymous | reply 252 | May 5, 2018 12:26 PM |
R252, yes, the DNA is from the manufacturing and packaging. If the DNA was actually from a person who had physical/sexual contact with JBR, there would ne no problem getting a good sample.

by Anonymous | reply 254 | May 5, 2018 8:16 PM |
The last, most notorious case Sacramento County had was Ted Kazcisnki, the Unabomber. There was no trial as he pleaded guilty, but I don't think any proceedings were televised. I'm not sure his Public Defender would spend too much time asking for no cameras. Then again, he's become rather invested in acting the part of an invalid in a wheelchair that he might want to be seen.

More disturbing quotes from the strippers about the GSK (although the last quote makes me laugh a bit—so you would only be sad/disappointed that he was a serial murderer if he *wasn’t* a racist?🙄) :
“The Gold Club dancer said she got the feeling the woman DeAngelo was talking about wasn't a real girlfriend.
'I don't know why, but it seemed he was talking about someone he paid for sex,' she said.
On another occasion, the dancer said she spoke to DeAngelo and he seemed in a bad mood.
'I asked him what was wrong and he told me he had had a fight with his girlfriend,' she recalled. 'He said: "I'm not getting any p***y tonight."'
The dancer said DeAngelo's racist rant really put her off him and after that she tried to avoid him - but that didn't stop him from trying to talk to her.
'But one time I was over by the bar he came over and tried to talk to me,' the dancer said. 'Now, in a funny way, I kind of feel glad I found out he was such a horrible racist. I wouldn't want to think that that nice old man might have killed so many people.'”

He was in the wheelchair was because he was medicated after smashing his head against the patrol car's window and into a cinderblock wall a few times. Also, prisoners on medical watch are automatically given a wheelchair to limit liability.
But, yes, he was fixing cars, riding motorcycles, and putting furniture together in the days leading up to his arrest.

I do hope that some FBI profilers are able to interview him extensively (like in “MINDHUNTER”).
They may be able to make a new profile of a different (maybe law enforcement oriented?) type of serial killer that they don’t currently have on file and that may help them catch more rapists and killers like the GSK in the future...
This guy apparently wasn’t on anyone’s radar and without the innovative genetic profiling done, they likely never would have caught him.
He also didn’t seem to match up exactly with what a lot of criminal profilers out there had predicted that the GSK would be like.
That alone should freak out the criminal profiler community and be a wake up call to law enforcement that they need to study this guy (and those similar to him) in a more in depth manner.

Golden State Killer
Cordova Cat Burglar

LOL, r299!
I agree he probably started out as a peeping tom. These guys usually do.

Yikes, R292. I think they should just forego the cage and wheel DeAngelo out in Hannibal Lecter style.

I love R299

Are two on the right showing us tinymeat verificatia?
by Anonymous | reply 305 | May 18, 2018 3:52 PM |
Yes, R305.
And in doing so, they are delivering poetic justice.

The most disturbing parts of the 171-page warrant for the Golden State Killer suspect

Apparently, he stalked his victims using the drainage channels. People in Southern California should be familiar with what these look like, as they are ubiquitous. I've always maintained that bad things happen near these concrete flood channels.
One woman kept finding shoe prints in her yard, and the gate constantly left open. More disturbing, police wrote, she found drawings left on her bedroom window that appeared to have been written in “bodily fluids.”

That's fucking disgusting.

Scary

What are drainage channels, R308? I'm from the midwest, and if we have them they're not called that. Exactly how did he use them? Are they like tunnels or sewers or something?
Sorry if those are dumb questions. I tried googling, but it wasn't much help.

They're for water run off. Like man made cement creeks.
by Anonymous | reply 313 | June 13, 2018 3:52 AM |
R312, that's where all of Southern California's gutter water, storm run-off funnel away from the streets and into these concrete flood channels. In turn, these smaller channels (like the one pictured at R308) then funnel into even bigger concrete channels like the LA River. If you've ever seen the movie "Grease," the LA "River" is an example of the larger river flood channels. They're dry most of the year except when it rains, so these areas attract a lot of homeless, vandals, druggies, etc. I grew up not too far from one and it was the first place I saw someone shooting up drugs as kid.

As for how the GSK used them, it seems he was pretty good at navigating them on foot and on bike. Using them to spy at houses from an angle where he could not be seen. And then using them to escape after he committed a rape or crime.

Oxygen is doing a special on the Golden State Killer tomorrow (Saturday)
by Anonymous | reply 317 | August 4, 2018 1:41 AM |
The Oxygen special was pretty good. I haven't really been following the case since they caught him, so it was interesting seeing his coworkers, neighbors, and others talking about their interactions with him.

I just finished the HBO series and the ID series where they keep going on about the construction angle which I guess was completely off base now that we know who he was. I am 1/2 way through the HLN series. Does anyone know if there has been a more recent series with them knowing about DeAngelo?
And, no, they guy is not a retired police officer. He was FIRED from the Auburn police force (as noted numerous times across both threads) after attempting to shoplift dog repellent spray and a hammer from an area business.
Please do keep up, OK?
Wrong. He was not fired. After he was caught shoplifting, he was told that he would be put on administrative leave while the incident was investigated, which was standard procedure. He resigned immediately, presumably to stop the investigation, which is what happened.
Please do keep up, OK?
And as a few posters correctly mentioned above, he has extremely skinny pencil dick of average length, not a micropenis or a nubbin.
