For 5 years, I worked for a famous female singer you would all know and I discovered she regularly Googled herself. If she had found a thread about herself here she would have definitely read it.

The American painter James Rizzi is very popular in Germany, much more so then in the US. When he died some years ago, I started a thread about it on DL. Being German, I assumed he would be just as famous in his home country as over here, and was surprised when no one on DL seemed to know who he was. Finally I realized the peculiar nature of his fame, and made a comment calling him "the David Hasselhoff of the art world" - only for a relative of his to pop up, taking great offense at my comparison. You see, at that point, no English language media had reported on his death yet, so my DL thread had been the only thing that came up when you googled "James Rizzi dead"...

I was, of course, mortified, and rushed to explain that my comment had not been intended as a slur on the quality of his work (I even mentioned that I had visited a big exhibition of his work in Mainz a few years earlier), but I have no idea if they were still around to read my explanation.

Not here, but on an urban site had a piece on a certain hip hop celeb who was known for going in and out of jail/prison a bit too frequently, and many speculated that it was the one way he could satisfy his voracious appetite fro men without looking "too gay."

His gf posted a series of rants the next day and they were hilarious. Of course I immediately assumed they were from a faker, but we later determined that they were legit.

I would imagine that similar activity occurs here, but the angry partner likely has the sense to remain anonymous.

I won't say what politicians I worked for, but when I worked for a political campaign consulting firm, that is how I discovered DL. We had to regularly google our clients, and I found where people on DL were speculating one of our clients was gay or bi, funny thing was all of us in the office were trying to figure it out too. But, when he found out we had read the DL speculation, and my boss asked him how or if he wanted us to handle the speculation, he dropped us, because he wouldn't hire people who read gossip!

I would imagine most celebrities google themselves, whether they bother to check out a site like DL that they probably have never heard of is questionable.

For the heck of it I googled Ellen Degeneres and looked through the 14 pages of hits, nothing about her on DL even came up. There were 139 results for her, I would not read 139 results about myself and I am sure Ellen is a lot busier than I am.

If celebrities find DL my guess would be they are mostly closeted or hear gay rumors about themselves and google their name+gay and find DL. Or someone they know tells them about finding them on DL.

R204 here, I tested my theory on Ben Barnes. Googled "Ben Barnes actor" since there is a famous Ben Barnes who isn't an actor and didn't find DL reference of him until page 15. I Googled "Ben Barnes+gay" and the DL reference to him was on page one, the eight hit.

So unless an actor is looking to see if there are gay rumors about them they will find DL quite quickly, just doing a search of their name, they are unlikely to find DL.

Don’t they have PR teams whose job it is to google this stuff for them?
