by Anonymousreply 2April 27, 2018 12:37 AM

Is NBC/MSNBC running out of $$$? Is it because they way overpaid Megyn Kelly? Why can't they hand out quiet payout$ to keep this stuff out of the news like other networks?

NBC hires these types because they are easy to control and blackmail. They build them up as untouchable giants but they know all their dirt and hold all their secrets.

by Anonymousreply 11April 27, 2018 1:14 AM

Nope, R11, not Matt, but I do think he was good at his job on-air. Can't speak to what he was doing behind the scenes but our viewing enjoyment isn't affected by what happens in the wings.

“I was coming to work early this morning,” Brokaw said, “down Fifth Avenue in the predawn darkness, and it reminded me of the old days when I was doing the ‘Today’ show, because I saw the homeless people in the church shelters and the park benches…And you feel great sympathy for them. But you also envy the extra hour of sleep that they’re getting…you go by and say ‘If I were them, I would still be sleeping.”‘

Tom is still so revered at the network. They trot him out to this day so he can opine about various big news moments. Everyone kisses his ring and ass. I wonder how they will handle this on air tomorrow. It’s always so cringey when they have to report on a member of “the Today Show family.” It’s so nauseating and ridiculous.

I'm not defending predatory behavior at all, I'm just saying we should not put celebrities on pedestals to begin with and should only enjoy them to the extent we see them within the scope of their jobs and not expect perfection in all aspects of their lives.

by Anonymousreply 19April 27, 2018 1:56 AM

I'd heard whispers that he might be next. The coldest insult in journalism was the accusation: "oh, so you're going to be a broadcast mannequin?" Brokaw always reminded me of that sneer.

by Anonymousreply 20April 27, 2018 2:00 AM

R18 NBC heavily encouraged America to put him on a pedestal because it gave them power. He was the go-to guy when the latest propaganda needed to pushed on the American public.

by Anonymousreply 21April 27, 2018 2:03 AM

R18: If that was your point, do a better job stating as such. Your original comment read as though you were excusing all inappropriate behavior because it is not in front of the camera. Good rhetoric and composition is important when conveying information.

by Anonymousreply 55April 27, 2018 3:42 PM

Tom is not as revered as you think...he makes people think he is. He's actually considered a pain in the ass because even though he retired, he is constantly calling the newsroom people to give his advice, asking to get on air. He's always forgotten he started out on the Today show - he's not hardened journalist. And, he's also forgotten, he didn't create the news, wasn't part of it - he reported on it - there is aways the blur many of these famous newsreaders cross - when they want to be the story forgetting they are just the mouthpiece.

Tom announced his retirement years ago, yet he keeps dragging his corpse on set thinking no one else has his insight. I have been told by people at NBC when the phone rings and his name comes up, they roll the dice who will answer it because he's such a nuisance

Also, this isn't surprising - 20 30 years ago - whenever. Imagine having to tell people Tom Brokaw was inappropriate when he created a mystique of untouchability. I have no doubt he did it - thought he was above retribution - like the rapist Matt Later

Why is this surprising? This was the environment Matt Lauer grew up in when he started out at NBC. They all knew about Matt, even his female co-anchors made jokes about it at a roast. If the people and male broadcasters at the top who had power cared they could have intervened and got Matt fired the way Matt did with Ann. Matt has been unpopular since he did that to Ann, it could have been done easily after Ann left without all this coming out. Matt got away with it because this is the culture there. Obviously it is one of the perks of being a powerful man at NBC. And don't think Savannah and Hoda didn't know. They did. Hoda, who I like, got promoted for being a good girl in how she responded to the Matt mess publicly, acting all surprised. She and Savannah were good team players, giving the public reason to believe no one at NBC knew with their pretend shock.

R13, stop with the childish name callin (an opinion about someone else makes R12 a sociopath? In what universe is that even possible?). I'm not R12 but name calling when a person's opinion differs to one's own has become endemic and tiring on The DL. Maybe just focus on and respond to R12's comment.

by Anonymousreply 62April 27, 2018 6:07 PM

R62: I've already explained that the way R12's comment was worded made it seem that he was OK with all the scandals so long as it wasn't on his TV screen. That is the hallmark of uncaring sociopathy. Since then, R12 has stated that was not the case, and I'll even apologize for the misunderstanding. But it in no way concerns you or the very CONCERNED post about the CONCERNING way DL interacts with each other. Go be CONCERNED somewhere else.

Vester - a war correspondent for the network in the 1990s, who today runs a website for mothers - came forward to accuse legendary newsman who hosted NBC Nightly News for 22 years.

She told The Washington Post and Variety magazine that Brokaw, 26 years her elder, forcibly tried to kiss her twice in 1994 and 1995, while he was the network's star anchor.

Brokaw says only that he met Vester twice, 'both at her request' because she wanted career advice.

'The meetings were brief, cordial and appropriate, and despite Linda's allegations, I made no romantic overtures towards her at that time or any other,' he said in a statement.

Another woman, a 24-year-old production assistant at the time, has also accused Brokaw of sexual harassment dating back to the same period, allegations he also denied.

US television networks have been rocked by a series of accusations as the United States grapples with the cultural shift of the #MeToo movement.

NBC sacked Matt Lauer, the host of its flagship Today program last November. CBS News fired Charlie Rose a few days earlier and Fox News dropped Bill O'Reilly in 2017.

Lauer was the biggest media scalp so far in the US watershed on sexual misconduct, and criticism has mounted against NBC for allegedly not doing enough to counter what some have called a culture of harassment.

'I am speaking out now because NBC has failed to hire outside counsel to investigate a genuine, long-standing problem of sexual misconduct in the news division,' Vester told the Post.

NBC will now start looking into Brokaw's behavior just as the investigation into Matt Lauer nears completion.

Chairman Andy Lack addressed both of those investigations in an internal memo sent on Friday.

'As you have all seen now in reports from last night, there are allegations against Tom Brokaw, made by a former NBC News journalist, which Tom emphatically denies. As we’ve shown, we take allegations such as these very seriously, and act on them quickly and decisively when the facts dictate,' wrote Lack.

'The same report included claims against Matt Lauer. As you know, since the week we terminated Matt’s employment, NBC Universal has been conducting a review, led by general counsel Kim Harris -who has extensive experience in conducting reviews of this kind- with a team of legal and HR leaders. Kim has advised us that the review is nearing its conclusion, and we will have findings and further steps to share with you as soon as next week.'

Lack then closed out the memo by stating: 'Once again, our highest priority is to ensure we have a workplace environment where everyone feels safe and protected. We are absolutely committed to making this a reality--there can be no exception.'

by Anonymousreply 74April 27, 2018 9:31 PM

I believe Brokaw. Her story is almost cringeworthy in her telling. There are numerous issues I have with her besides her timing (just as she's getting back into the business), her worship of Ailes, the fact she omits that she got Brokaw to get her a job with Ailes, the fact that she had him come back a second time, that she decloned him and he left.

Seriously is this what it has come to? She's a bitch.

NBC won’t be launching a full internal investigation into new sex harassment allegations against former news anchor Tom Brokaw, network sources told Page Six on Friday. “She’s given her side, and he’s responded. They don’t feel there’s anything left to investigate in the case,’’ an NBC source said, adding, “We may make further inquiries if more information emerges.”

Former NBC News war correspondent Linda Vester accused Brokaw in an article in Variety on Thursday of groping her and trying to kiss her against her will in the 1990s. She said she finally came forward because she was upset with the way the network had handled sex-harassment allegations against its former “Today’’ host Matt Lauer. Brokaw denied Vester’s claims, and so far, it seems he has got the full backing of his NBC News bosses.

NBC News Chairman Andrew Lack briefly addressed the accusations in a memo to employees Friday — adding that the company’s review into workplace harassment sparked by the Lauer scandal was now winding down.

“There are allegations against Tom Brokaw, made by a former NBC News journalist, which Tom emphatically denies,’’ Lack wrote. “As we’ve shown, we take allegations such as these very seriously, and act on them quickly and decisively when the facts dictate.”

He then added of Lauer, “As you know, since the week we terminated Matt’s employment, NBC Universal has been conducting a review, led by general counsel Kim Harris — who has extensive experience in conducting reviews of this kind — with a team of legal and HR leaders.

“Kim has advised us that the review is nearing its conclusion, and we will have findings and further steps to share with you as soon as next week.”

Vester’s lawyer said in a statement to Page Six on Friday, “My client stands by the allegations which speak for themselves.

“My client has watched as a number of brave women have come forward to report extreme forms of sexual harassment at NBC,’’ added the lawyer, Ari Wilkenfeld.

“She has also observed that the Company’s response does not appear to be aimed at producing a safer and more equitable workplace for women. She felt it her duty to add her own story, not only to lend support to the other women who have already complained, but to demonstrate that this problem is not a new one, and that NBC needs to prioritize actually listening to and protecting their employees who have been victimized.”

"Esteemed journalists" - what a joke! Who would that be?

The media is a business, and like every business it's raison d'etre is profit, not 'truth'.

R107, the media failed the public in 2016 with its focus on tabloid aspects of the campaign, and continues to do so, while tramp goes on dismantling the country.

by Anonymousreply 112April 28, 2018 4:07 AM

Americans don't care what an elderly WASP did. Anyway, the media has provided the masses with plenty of scapegoated minorities with which to salve their guilty consciences.

I don't believe this one at all.

Matt Lauer has broken his silence for the first time since his sudden firing from Today last November.

'I have made no public comments on the many false stories from anonymous or biased sources that have been reported about me over these past several months,' Lauer told The Washington Post on Thursday.

'I remained silent in an attempt to protect my family from further embarrassment and to restore a small degree of the privacy they have lost. But defending my family now requires me to speak up.'

He continued: 'I fully acknowledge that I acted inappropriately as a husband, father and principal at NBC. However I want to make it perfectly clear that any allegations or reports of coercive, aggressive or abusive actions on my part, at any time, are absolutely false.'

On Thursday, the Post detailed new allegations of sexual harassment and misconduct against Lauer that were made by three women who were NBC employees at the time of the incidents.

One woman said Lauer exposed himself to her in his office and asked her to touch his genitals; a second women claims she had sex with Lauer in his office during the workday; and a third said she was gifted a sex toy by Lauer.

Ann Curry also reveals that she reported Lauer personally to two members of NBC management after she was approached by a woman in tears who said she had been 'sexually harassed physically'.

A woman approached me and asked me tearfully if I could help her,' said Curry.

'She was afraid of losing her job. . . . I believed her.'

Curry said she then approached two members of NBC’s management team and urged them to keep an eye on Lauer and 'how he deals with women.'

She would not however name the two individuals she spoke to about the allegations, and an NBC spokesperson said on Thursday that there is no record of Curry ever speaking to anyone in management.

Those individuals are no longer in management positions at NBC.

That was in 2012, and while Lauer suffered no repercussions, Curry was soon off Today after just a year at the anchor desk amidst floundering ratings.

by Anonymousreply 121April 28, 2018 4:40 AM

The chairman of NBC, Andy Lack, was the one who had the task of firing Lauer back in November, and the next morning he was reportedly forced to defend his decision.

Lack and NBC later launched an internal investigation in order to determine 'why this was able to happen, why it wasn’t reported sooner, and what we can do to make employees feel more empowered to report unacceptable behavior.'

And while he has called Lauer's behavior 'reprehensible,' others have come to the former anchor's defense.

Three former NBC employees defended Lauer by saying his sexual relationships with NBC employees were always consensual.

One of those individuals also claimed that Lauer dismissed concern over his behavior by saying it was just the result of a troubled marriage. Curry said back in January that she was not surprised to learn that Lauer had been accused of sexual misconduct by multiple people in an interview with CBS This Morning.

When asked if she thought Lauer abused his power on the set of Today, Curry said: 'You know, I'm trying not do harm in these conversations. I can tell you I am not surprised by the allegations.'

She went on to state: 'I'm trying not to hurt people. I know what it's like to be publicly humiliated. I never did anything wrong to be publicly humiliated and I don't want to cause that kind of pain to somebody else.

'I can say that, because you're asking me a very direct question, I can say that I would be surprised if many women did not understand that there was a climate of verbal harassment that existed. I think it would be surprising if someone said that they didn't see that. It was verbal sexual harassment.'

When asked to clarify her statement, Curry said: ' I don't want to cause more pain. You're asking me a very direct question. I'm an honest person, I want to tell you that it was, yes, period.

The conversation later turned to Lauer's role in the ousting of Curry. 'In your opinion, many thought Matt Lauer was behind you leaving the Today show. I'd like to know what you feel about that. We've never talked about it. I always wondered. Your last day was very emotional, very difficult for you clearly and I don't want to upset you here either...' said Gayle King, prompting Curry to respond: 'Oh, don't worry. I'm not going start crying.'

She then said she was not the only person to ask this question.

' I don't know what all was behind it,' she continued. 'I do know it hurt like hell, it wasn't a fun moment, I've learned a great deal about myself. I've at this point let it go. I just let it go, and I want to sort of really move on from that.' Curry's ousting from the top on-air post by NBC executives back in 2012 became a public relations nightmare for the network.

NBC was widely criticized in the wake of that move, especially for the callous manner in which they dismissed the beloved veteran.

Curry was then forced to present the news as though it were her own decision, breaking down in tears on live television as she told viewers she would not longer be hosting with Lauer, just one year after she received the much coveted anchor chair.

Lauer meanwhile was fired before the exposes detailing his alleged predatory behavior were published, with NBC ousting the star of heir morning show ahead of pieces in The New York Times and Variety.

Lauer left his job as the longest-running morning show anchor on network television and the highest paid, taking home an annual salary of $25million.

Lack told staffers during an editorial call that Lauer had expressed remorse when he informed him of the network's decision to terminate his contract, less than 24 hours after an investigation was launched into his accuser's claims.

NBC said the incident of misconduct that led to his firing started when Lauer and a network employee were stationed at the Sochi Olympics in 2014 and continued beyond that assignment.

by Anonymousreply 122April 28, 2018 4:42 AM

NBC sure destroyed Lauer's office in a hurry. Guess they didn't want anyone to see how Lauer could lock the door by stealth means, preventing anyone inside the room from escaping.

by Anonymousreply 123April 28, 2018 4:53 AM

yes, Tom may have been great to most woman, but he may have done what she said. who knows?

But would NBC have done anything? They didn't even do anything about Matt for the longest time...

R99, I saw Rose at the Met on Wednesday. He was in Italian Renaissance and was spending really a lot of time looking at each painting. That's such a contrast to so many of the flyover visitors who spend 6.2 seconds on each piece, and usually that's through the viewfinder of their phone. There's one portrait of an old guy with rhinophyma (what W.C.Fields had, a bad rosacea), playing with his little golden-haired grandson, and Rose studied that one very intently.

Brokaw represents White WASP values. That's all Americans care about when they shrug in indifference.

Why single out flyoyers when Manhattan is populated with so very many thuggish gorilla types and uncultured money-worshiping Philistines? You really think most native New Yorkers give a fuck about art?

by Anonymousreply 133April 28, 2018 1:53 PM

This has been shared previously: Tom Brokaw is a self-involved, narcissistic news reader. He supposedly retired, but continues to show up on air to share his deep insights on current events because he once read them aloud on the air. A friend is friends with his daughter, Sarah, I thin, is her name. They all went to dinner, she said TB monopolized the conversation all night - talking about himself, showed no interest in anyone else at the table, didn't engage anyone n conversation - even his own child.

Does the mean he assaulted a woman? No, but he certainly has the predisposition of someone who knows they could get away with it. I believe Linda Vester - Tom needs to revise what happened to salvage his reputation

by Anonymousreply 134April 28, 2018 2:23 PM

That is it. These dumb, ultra-arrogant people had the easiest job in the world: reading something that someone else wrote, were paid millions and got glowing press to do so, and they couldn't even behave decently with people.

by Anonymousreply 135April 28, 2018 2:29 PM

The second accuser claimed that he took her hands and put them on his chest. She's obviously never been sexually harassed or she'd know it works the other way around.

That's the extent of the harassment she claims, BTW.

by Anonymousreply 136April 28, 2018 10:12 PM

R132 Exactly. Tom Brokow is WASP adjacent. These days that's good enough it seems.

by Anonymousreply 137April 28, 2018 10:42 PM

R133, the New Yorkers who visit the Met go to look at the art. The others go because the Met is on their list, like the Statue of Liberty.

I think NBC was wrong to encourage the letter signing. These types of letters for accused celebrities don't look good because the signers often have a much higher status level than the supposed victim. Also, a lot of these signers have no way of knowing how Brokaw treated ALL women. We also have no way of knowing if some of these women benefitted from their association with Brokaw. It makes it look like a privileged group of women are ganging up on a potential victim.

I'm sure many would have signed a letter supporting Bill Cosby in the early days of the accusations against him. Brokaw is very wealthy and has the support of a network with deep pockets. He doesn't need his female colleagues signing a letter of support for him. He has access to the best legal support in the world and he's a famous man who can get his message out to the public whenever he wants.

by Anonymousreply 144April 29, 2018 12:30 AM

I agree, R144

by Anonymousreply 145April 29, 2018 1:01 AM

If true NBC brass are bigger idiots than I thought.

Female staffers at NBC News are complaining they felt under huge pressure to sign the “women’s letter” defending Tom Brokaw against sexual harassment allegations.

But again, in the wake of #MeToo and TimesUp these women didn't feel emboldened to stand by their convictions and not sign? Or lodge a complaint?

Reports out now that the women were under severe pressure to sign the letter. I’m surprised Maddow would allow that. Guess she’s a corporate stooge just like everyone else.

by Anonymousreply 147May 1, 2018 2:06 PM

Maddow is a corporate stooge. She supported Joy Reid, too. She had Linda Sansour on and did not question her anti-women, homophobic beliefs, never questions the homophobic and sexist trans ideology. She is soft on power and there is a video of her and Tony Kushner where they ridicule anything but the corporate dual party system of Repub/Dems.

by Anonymousreply 148May 1, 2018 2:10 PM

These stupid women who signed the letter. I'm certain Mika started the chain letter of support - she tried to get Mark Halperin's abuse victims meet with him, cause you "know your worth" bullshit. And, she wants women o respect themselves, but she had an affair while she and crunchy faced Joe were married - who example is she showing her own daughter? Absolutely the women were pressured into signing. And, after Andrea Mitchells comments about Sarah Sanders and the WHCD - reflects what an absolute idiot she is

Tom Brokaw is a relic. He retired, but keeps showing up during breaking news because his experience as a news reader gives him such insight. He needs to close the curtain, his reign is over - move on, instead he doesn't realize his time is over. I have no doubt he did this, absolutely. He was a coddled, insulated news superstar (for reading the news)- and Linda Vester's comments about how he said to her "how is your job search going?" thats not some comment you just make up - and it reflects full awareness he knew he was in a position to help or hurt.

I worked in news. These people are complete social retards - all they can do is discuss the news of the day - news they didn't create, but just reported on then think they're in a position to dissect, they look over your shoulder to see if there's someone else they should be speaking to...they are socially, personally inept - beyond their insular job environment, they are completely incapable of functioning. They remind me of those people who are delegates at conventions - try having a conversation beyond their comfort zone, there is nothing there.

And, no one should sign anything Mika signs.

Natalie Portman: How she feels about signing the Polanski petition in 2009: “I very much regret it. I take responsibility for not thinking about it enough. Someone I respected gave it to me, and said, “I signed this. Will you too?” And I was like, sure. It was a mistake.

"When I was working with [film director] Mike Nichols, a man I loved, he asked me to sign a petition when Polanski was to be extradited... about 15 years ago. I signed it without really thinking about it, and then I was called on it by some young feminists at my son's university. And they said, 'This man's a rapist'... I watched the documentaries about it, and decided I had been wrong."

[How much pressure was involved here, as well? Even those regretting signing it, saying someone else told them (pressured them?) to sign it are careful with their words. It explains these petitions that don't make any sense...]
