I think it’s going to be great. I am a Babs junkie so loved her version, but recognize it as crap objectively. This Cooper/Gaga remake had all the markings of a joke celeb pet project but with it being moved back closer to Oscar season and the raves over the trailer and few easy viewings, I think it must be legit. People came to it wanting it to suck, so it makes the praise even more impressive to me. I am dying to get my hands on the trailer.

by Anonymous | reply 55 | April 27, 2018 7:52 AM |
Gaga's Oscar will be deserved for the many moods she conveys. The ending filmed at Manhattan Beach has Gaga singing to herself and walking into the ocean to be consumed whole.
by Anonymous | reply 56 | April 27, 2018 9:22 AM |
Lady Gaga is a genius. She has re-invented herself yet again, now as an Oscar winner. All of this despite a debilitating illness that has robbed her of her strength. The effort to complete the film was taxing on her entire body. Next March when the Academy gathers at the Kodak Theater it will a triumph for Lady Gaga to accept the Best Actress Oscar. I for one will be teary eyed.

The limo scene where Gaga is separated from Cooper by her handlers and crazed fans is another Oscar getter. Gaga is seen in the back window as rain pelts the car with her hands to the glass while Cooper screams for her. No dialogue is heard just the raw emotion of two people in love whose careers are going in different directions.

I recently re-watched Barbra's ASIB (first time since seeing it in the theater in 76) and was surprised at how it is so much Kristofferson's movie. He's better than she is -- in fact, he's pretty great in it. She's terrific when she sings though. And her singing is exquisite in ASIB.

I was a kid when superstars such as Madonna, Whitney and Janet Jackson broke out and they remained big stars well into my adulthood. With Lady Gaga it’s been different. I expected her to have the same longevity because of how big she became when her second album came out, she’s faded pretty quickly and can now only move a fraction of the records she used to.
by Anonymous | reply 101 | April 28, 2018 9:19 PM |
I could *maybe* see this being a mild hit with fraus and deplorables because it is a country music movie. But there is no way GaGa will be nominated for best actress. She is a terrible actress and fug - just like Barbara

I've never really understood the furor around Gaga. I don't hate her, and I like a few of her songs, but compared to Madonna at her creative peaks (Like a Prayer through Ray of Light) she doesn't really measure up. That is a fairly low bar by the way, Gaga isn't fit to clean Kate Bush's boots. Granted she is a step above the Britneys of the world in terms of talent (a fairly large one) and she does out of her way to appeal to the downtrodden, but in terms of her output it has steadily decreased in quality since her second album. She's like Tori Amos that way, though at least Tori had five very good albums before she started to lose the plot. Native Invader was very good, so it's possible Gaga could come back with something great. Not that Gaga is at the same level musically as Tori, but few are (I am speaking from a technical level here Tori is a musical genius, and her song structures and skill at the piano are difficult to rival.)

Liza was in the audience of Gaga's show from Madison Square Garden where Gaga shouted her out.
Liza from the March 2014 Los Angeles Times:
"Lady Gaga, I love. She's a good singer; she plays the piano. She's a good musician, and she sat down and thought about how to get people's attention."
Liza will be a fan of the movie.

by Anonymous | reply 141 | April 29, 2018 6:55 PM |
Wow, judging from this thread, being a "little monster" is still a thing.
by Anonymous | reply 142 | April 29, 2018 6:58 PM |
She can belt, but she can't really sing. She can't emote or tell a story through a song, that's why even Madonna and Janet can pull off a ballad and she cannot.
There is way this doesn't flop. The release date keeps getting moved around, and weren't there numerous reshoots?
by Anonymous | reply 143 | April 29, 2018 8:17 PM |
If ever the gender roles were going to be reversed, it should have been the Judy Garland version.
by Anonymous | reply 144 | April 29, 2018 8:24 PM |
yes, lesser ACTRESSES have won before. That's it, actresses. She's a famous pop star in her first movie. Even if she managed to get a nom, do you think they'll make her win against - let's say - Amy Adams or Viola Davis? You know, real pros who worked their asses for years in movies? Sorry, i don't see this coming. And i like Gaga enough as a singer.
by Anonymous | reply 145 | April 29, 2018 8:28 PM |
Joan Didion and John Gregory Dunne did the screenplay for Streisand's version, but they had a falling out with Jon Peters and parted ways. It's a shame because that would have been one hell of a movie.
by Anonymous | reply 146 | April 29, 2018 10:34 PM |
Not Gaga's first movie.
Also, she's a grand elegant lesbian......er thespian now.
Paid good money for her GG.

Madonna WAS robbed not even being nominated for Evita. She was brilliant. Yes the industry screwed her over in the only way they could.
Gaga is courting the industry in a predictable way. Singing The Sound of Music at the Oscars was part of the start. She's so versatile! Put her in American Horror Story - she can do anything. All of those press releases praising her. Such b.s. She's UGLY plain and simple. Madonna is gorgeous and was the original. Gaga is a used up sponge that needs to be tossed away.

Please, I don't even like Gaga but she can sing circles around Janet
by Anonymous | reply 150 | April 30, 2018 3:12 PM |
Lol. Give it a rest Madbot R148, Gaga will be nominated and possibly WIN Best Actress, an achievement the wrinkly ass hasbeen Madonna will never reach, though she desperately tried with Evita (a two hour music video).
by Anonymous | reply 151 | April 30, 2018 3:24 PM |
So, I've been reading up on this just for shits and giggles. And everybody is raving about it. Streisand, Sean Penn. I thought it would be meh at best. I knew the music would be good enough. Shit. Gaga? Oscar? Good for her.
by Anonymous | reply 152 | April 30, 2018 10:36 PM |
STFU Madonna Stans. Gaga can sing, your gal cannot.
Simple as that.
by Anonymous | reply 153 | April 30, 2018 10:40 PM |
Madonna should have won the Oscar for Dangerous Game. She was brilliant in that.
by Anonymous | reply 154 | April 30, 2018 10:46 PM |
See Decaprio's look as Gaga walked by him at the Golden Globes? He's a Hollywood insider. Unless this is a monster hit, only Oscar nod would be for a song. That's my unscientific prediction.

Gaga could never have the charisma and innate acting ability that Madonna shows in this video.

by Anonymous | reply 160 | May 1, 2018 12:38 AM |
They should have put Lindsay Lohan in it and directed it a la Paul Morrissey - super trash and full of pathos. And Lindsay used to be able to carry a tune. Change the story to a A Star is Dead
by Anonymous | reply 161 | May 1, 2018 12:39 AM |
It should've starred Chris Pine and Chris Evans.
by Anonymous | reply 162 | May 1, 2018 12:41 AM |
R158, Madonna has had enough chances. She is good in videos. No doubt. She's terrible in movies. They're obviously very different. Don't worry, she's biggest female pop star of all time.

No she couldn't. She'll always suck as an actress. She's too much of a control freak.
Lady Gaga has some actual talent.

While I initially thought this would be another Ishtar, I actually think it will be great. Early buzz is very positive and Cooper is a very smart guy (esp for a famous actor) who is absolutely ruthless in his pursuit of fame and awards, etc at any cost (hence his return to the closet). If he can’t direct, he’s smart and shrewd enough to surround himself with folks who can help him. But he can probably direct in his own right because, again, he is a bit nutso in his study of acting and film.
by Anonymous | reply 167 | May 1, 2018 1:04 AM |
She was absolute shit on AHS, so her actingvtrack record isn’t promising. And she is not winning shit- Hudson win in Supporting, same place where Mary J was nominated. Lead is different than Supporting.
Someone I know who at the test screening a few months back said Cooper gave the better performance by far.
by Anonymous | reply 168 | May 1, 2018 1:07 AM |
Early buzz has also been a sign that something is a shit show and someone is trying to get in front of it to create a narrative.
by Anonymous | reply 169 | May 1, 2018 1:32 AM |
R163, Aunty Mag always reminds me of the succubus in Peter Straub's ghost story - lively in person, but invisible or malevolent on screen.

We'll know how Gaga will fare when the Award Season gets underway next Winter. There will be a mass media campaign to aid her.
by Anonymous | reply 175 | May 1, 2018 9:30 AM |
I think Madonna gave her one and only great performance in Snake Eyes (really, check it out) because Abel Ferrara is such an asshole that he probably treated her like shit and probably fucked with her mind in order to get it from her. I think i even read a Madonna interview in which she said so. Directors being abusive (at least verbally) to actors to make them react is quite usual on sets (or at least it was. Visconti used to SLAP his stars), but maybe no one before dared to to that to Madonna.
by Anonymous | reply 176 | May 1, 2018 12:11 PM |
Madonna will never be a decent actress because there is no “there” there. She’s hollow at the core. She fared well enough in Evita- I liked her dancing - because she was playing a one-dimensional rendering of a real person, a cypher whom everybody else defined.
by Anonymous | reply 177 | May 1, 2018 2:09 PM |
R176? Madonna has never given a great performance in anything. Anything.
by Anonymous | reply 178 | May 1, 2018 2:10 PM |
They’re positioning this to be a success like The Bodyguard. Doubtful it’ll be a hit with black audiences. Clearly targeted towards the fraus and gays like Burlesque.
by Anonymous | reply 179 | May 1, 2018 2:12 PM |
To be a convincing actress, you need to convey vulnerability, and Madonna is the least vulnerable person on the planet. The audience never rooted for her.
Streisand, Garland and Doris Day were able to successfully transition from singer to actress because you wanted to root for them and protect them. Gaga has some vulnerability, so we'll see if it conveys onscreen.
by Anonymous | reply 180 | May 1, 2018 4:59 PM |
^The good Madonna performance i was talking about, in the Ferrara's movie, shows her vulnerable and desperate. So she can do that with the right director.
by Anonymous | reply 181 | May 1, 2018 5:05 PM |

I hope it bombs so she can go back to making dance music. I don't want to buy a soundtrack for this film or a new country album or another duet with peado kelly. I want her to make experimental art-pop dance albums again.

I saw Madonna on stage in London where she was actually great. It was a play that did not cross the Atlantic. She played an art dealer. Had she made this into a small independent film, she'd have shown everyone that she could act.
by Anonymous | reply 188 | May 1, 2018 9:38 PM |
I saw her in Speed the Plow. She meh and the entire effect was stunt-casting.

English Rose Madonna was robbed of an Oscar nomination for 2002's 'Swept Away,'
by Anonymous | reply 190 | May 1, 2018 9:46 PM |
I like Gaga but to say that she's winning the Oscar based from the trailer is laughable. I want to be proven wrong though. But it's realistic that she might get one for best song. I agree that the Academy seems to be quite fond of her (same with Beyonce).
by Anonymous | reply 191 | May 1, 2018 9:55 PM |
Madonna cannot act. Never seen Gaga on AHS but she's supposed to be mediocre. She's like the obnoxious kid in high school who scored well on her PSAT. She's sitting next to the quiet kid who got early acceptance to Harvard and is telling him how brilliant she is. Just exhausting.
by Anonymous | reply 192 | May 2, 2018 2:12 AM |
Dear R188, I saw the play in London as well. Madonna WAS great, and conveyed great vulnerability when necessary. Too bad it never made it over here.

by Anonymous | reply 196 | May 2, 2018 3:52 AM |
r193, right??? That was during the Guy Ritchie period, too. Had she had Ritchie direct her in a small, independent film of that play instead of doing that horrible, self-indulgent shipwreck movie she'd be much more respected as an actress. I was shocked at how good she was.
by Anonymous | reply 197 | May 2, 2018 4:41 AM |
R65 Lmao that sounds super fucking corny, she will have her "No more wire hangers!" Moment.
by Anonymous | reply 198 | May 2, 2018 5:17 AM |
Yes. R197 you mean the remake of Swept Away that Guy Richie directed. So Madonna has had everyone from Woody Allan to Sean Penn to Guy Richie direct her. In everything from cameos to staring. IMDb lists 95 acting roles. I counted 24 roles where she doesn't play herself. 24 opportunities to show she could act on film. She can't.
by Anonymous | reply 199 | May 2, 2018 5:36 AM |

Streisand will remain the only singer/actress to win a Best Actress Oscar. Judy couldn't do it, and neither could Diana Ross, Bette Midler, and certainly not Gaga.
Streisand is The Queen.

Sean Penn has had his ass kissed by fellow CAA pony Coop for some time now they've become good friends. Coop sucks up to him, went to his book launch, they go to dinner etc...... Penn telling people how good this movie is should not be taken as anything other than garbage. Coop's an ass kisser plain and simple. He appeals to big stars and their egos by telling them how much he loves and admires them and they inevitably become friendly with him. De Niro, Leo, Penn.
