Catwalk documentary (1995)
A lot of scenes from the supermodel documentary come from the much better "Christy Turlington: Backstage," which aired on Lifetime. It featured music from Bjork, U2 and Orbital, and Turlington was edited in a flattering light.
The music from "Catwalk" is terrible, as if Malcolm McLaren did the score. Christy seems bitchy and superficial at the 8-minute mark when she says to Veronica Webb her documentary is using film, not video like Webb. "Catwalk" kills any mystique Turlington had, much like Linda Evangelista's annoying complaining in "Unzipped."
Did you see "Catwalk" and what do you think of it?

Christy does act like an a teenage girl in this. Especially when she keeps repeating the same thing in German,, and the woman says "You only know that one sentence?"

I had read that Christy Turlington wasn't happy with the Lifetime movie, and there was even an opening night premiere for it. She had wanted a big Truth or Dare type release, and Catwalk was even produced by the same filmmaker.

Of course Christy and Helena were portrayed in a 'flattering light' in this documentary': they were boning Mr. U2 and Mrs. U2 at the time, respectively.
At one time the interweb had contained a plethora of articles about this party; unfortunately, it has since been wiped clean.

There's got to be more to the story as far as the two versions. In "Christy Turlington: Backstage," Christy came across cool, sophisticated and sympathetic.
In "Catwalk," using a lot of the same footage, Christy is vacuous, annoying and shrill.

I've only seen 'Catwalk' never saw the Lifetime version, nor did I know it existed. I agree Christy came off like a dope in it, but then, I didn't really expect her not to. With that said, nobody was more disappointing than Linda E in Unzipped, so shrill and whiny and doing hack AbFab bits which could be seen at any gay bar in the regions.

R17 The DL Grammar Nazis would have a field day with her. She seems bright for a model. However she is quite a homewrecker. She dated Jean Paul Enthoven and then left him for his son, Raphael, who was married and had a kid. She also cheated with Mick Jagger when he was 'married' to Jerry Hall. A hussy if there ever was one.

R20 there's really no "story"... CHRISTY TURLINGTON: BACKSTAGE was simply an edited for TV 1-hour version of the feature length film CATWALK. This was at the height of the supermodel era and Lifetime probably envisioned some great ratings with the core female and gay viewing audience, the producers got some extra $$$, and everybody got wider TV exposure since the film certainly wasn't going to be playing in Peoria (it had a very limited release in just a few major markets).
Probably at least 70% of the 1-hour runtime of the TV version is fashion show runway footage and they even added Christy doing some voiceovers about each designer and what they are known for, their style, etc. that was not in the feature length release. The TV version was really more about a glimpse of the models and a chance for women to enjoy looking at the clothes, make up, atmosphere at each show, etc.
You weren't ever going to get much insight into the models themselves in BACKSTAGE since the TV version had such a small portion of the model interaction you saw in CATWALK.
Having said that, Christy doesn't come across all that badly in the film aside from not being all that interesting... but come on, she was in her early 20's, had not yet been to college, and basically had been in the supermodel bubble since her late teens. So she wasn't nearly as sophisticated as she "looked". But she wasn't a bitch and time has certainly proved she was much more grounded than Naomi.
In later interviews Christy has said she doesn't really like the film and admits she hadn't developed enough as a well rounded adult to be worthy of that much interest, it was a shallow look at her career, etc.
She went back to NYU undergrad and Columbia grad school, has gone on to some pretty worthwhile humanitarian work, and made the TIME 100 list. She may not be Ruth Bader Ginsberg, but she seems to be a socially conscious adult and has tried to use her fame to make the world a better place.

I thought that Christy Turlington: Backstage had more of a progression from the beginning of fashion week till the end. Catwalk seem to have a lot of different scenes inserted without regards to chronological events.
by Anonymous | reply 29 | April 25, 2018 7:47 PM
|
Probably CT Backstage is easier to follow chronologically because its just so much quicker at 1 hour (even less when you figure for commercials) and goes pretty much straight from one fashion show to the next.
Catwalk has so many scenes and vignettes in addition to the fashion shows that it may seem random, but its also totally chronological and the scenes all flow Milan - Paris - New York in the actual chrono order.

R7 WRONG they weren't tight lipped about it all... every interview at the time played up the Christy's mom was a Pan Am stewardess originally from Central America and her dad was a pilot, that's how they met.
Also, one reason advertisers loved Christy's looks was that she could appeal to many different ethnic groups and demographics without looking totally like them (i.e. not a blond Barbie doll, but also not a true Latina). She was exotic, but not in a way that was limiting at all.
by Anonymous | reply 32 | April 25, 2018 8:07 PM

Yeah, I agree with R31... some of the score Malcom McLaren put together for Catwalk was great, but much of it was corny and pretentious. The music in CT Backstage was better.
First time I had heard Bjork was with this song playing as Christy, Kate, and Naomi arrive at Milan Malpensa and then drive into the city in some of the footage used for CT Backstage. It felt like a revelation... ahhhhh the 90's.

The director of Unzipped wanted all of the girls to play up their bitchy/catty side, and Linda E was the only one who got it right.
Tyra from the start was always a motor-mouth and a bit too straight-laced and cerebral for the edgy/sexy/party girl models of the 90s. Even she has said something along the lines of "When all the other girls were going out clubbing in Paris, I was eating at McDonalds."

Editors definitely had their favorites, I feel like Turlington was constantly on the cover of Bazaar in the '90s, less so U.S. Vogue. I'm sure it had a lot to do with favorites of photographers as well. Wasn't Meisel Wintour's go-to photog for a lot of the '90s? He favored Evangelista, particularly after the break-up of 'The Trinity'.

I started reading Vogue and other fashion magazines in 1990 when a goth girlfriend introduced them to me. I was a serious boy studying painting and before that I'd always viewed fashion as something a bit silly but it didn't take long for me to recognize just how gorgeous fashion photography was. It was obviously the era of the supermodels and everything was so just so awesome, especially for an artsy teen boy. The girls were so beautiful. Evangelista and Tatjana Patitz were my favorites, especially when photographed by Peter Lindbergh.
That was a long time ago and it all seemed once again so silly when I tried to watch Catwalk. I was reminded once again that what made me like fashion and the models was really the photography. I've never really been into clothes and I can't say any of the models were that interesting as persons, they were just basically the Kardashians of the time. It's actually scary how much attention fashion shows and models were getting, and still are. I mean is there anything more silly than watching frantic backstage action at a fashion show like it's something hugely important? I've watched enough top model shows and Project Runways to realize how idiotic it all is. And yes yes, I understand some people love the whole thing, and I did to a point earlier as well but I guess now that I'm way over 40 I realize how dumb it is to idolize models like they are deities. No wonder the industry got rid of the cult of the supermodel. However I do still fondly remember the art surrounding the whole thing.
