Thurston Howell III?

R2, a good guess, but I don't recall Thurston Howell III ever using "smashing" as a word. That's more Terry-Thomas ("What a simply *smashing* breakfast. I could do with this!").

He had an English accent, can't remember if it was TV or from a movie.

Who is Thurston Howell?
by Anonymous | reply 11 | April 24, 2018 2:07 AM |
It was definitely Thurston Howell III from "Gilligan's Island." He referred to his wife as "lovey," and he indeed said "smashing" frequently.

Laura Bush called this out to her late ex-boyfriend as she crashed into his car with hers.

Without hesitation. It was most definitely Thurston Howell lll.

The phrase just popped into my head today for some reason. I never watched much Gilligan, haven't seen an episode in ages...I have no idea why or how "smashing, lovey" came into my head, just a totally random, stray thought, so thanks DL for solving the mystery for me.
On the subject of random phrases, who used to exclaim, "I say"? Again, it was someone with a British accent, from either TV or the movies.
TIA DL. You're smashing! šøš¾š„

[quote] Thurston Howell of Gilligan's Island speaks with an affected accent that is similar to, but not the same as, the Boston Brahmin accent. His accent is an invented one.
To a child, this might very well seem like an British accent.

I love you, R13.

R16, "I say!"was probably the aforementioned Terry-Thomas.

John Goodman did an imitation of that line on the original run of "Roseanne".
by Anonymous | reply 20 | April 24, 2018 2:22 PM |
Sounds like something Nigel Thornberry would say.

R13 please quit trying to make āLaura Bush killed guys while drivingā happen. Itās not working, itās dumb and you need a new shtick.
by Anonymous | reply 22 | April 24, 2018 3:18 PM |
Well I think the phrase needs to make a comeback.
by Anonymous | reply 23 | April 24, 2018 4:06 PM |
Well, I googled, "smashing Lovie" and found someone who literally did that
>>>>He made the shocking call Wednesday afternoon after allegedly smashing Lovieās head in with a corner of a broken fireplace at her home in Baton Rouge, La.
Eric Augustus, 49, screamed āLord have mercyā as he was led away by police after allegedly battering his girlfriend Lovie Variste, 76, to death while high on synthetic marijuana
