SJP isn't all that bad, at least next to Andie MacDowell. Pieces of wood go to her for lessons on how to be dry and stiff. Styrofoam goes to her to learn how to be more plastic and insubstantial . White rice goes to her to learn how to be bland.

For me, a legitimate serious actress would have to be someone who has been nominated or even won awards. Like Hilary Swank, who I consider the epitome of one note acting.

Mia Wasikowska. After seeing the highly disappointing “Crimson Peak” I thought to myself, “man that dull milquetoast girl looks familiar.” After looking at her IMDb page I realized I’ve seen her in half a dozen movies but she was so unmemorable in all of them I plum forgot.
by Anonymous | reply 22 | April 23, 2018 4:28 PM |
Poor Barbra Streisand. Great voice, very funny in her early comedy roles, but then she wanted to be a "serious" actress and only do "issue movies." Turned herself into a joke. She's not a very good serious actress. Same with Bette Midler. I'm kinda glad her GYPSY movie died, because I'm picturing it being about as bad as the Midler version with Streisand being appealing for the first 90 minutes and then falling apart when she's asked to be more serious in the later half of the story.

I agree with R16. Saw that piece of crap Mother and the part where everyone broke in the house and she's breathlessly yelling "Get out of my house " made me cringe.
She also made me cringe in Silver Linings Playbook. She must have swallowed a gallon of Weinstein cum to get that Oscar.
by Anonymous | reply 46 | April 23, 2018 5:18 PM |
If there was a book about how Weinstein sleazed his way to Oscar gold, it should be called "Fool's Gold: How Miramax Took Over The Oscars".

Another vote for Jodie Foster. Tight-lipped, tight-jawed, no range, conveys fear or uncertainty or discomfort or confusion by saying her lines breathlessly and then sucking in some air, dead-eyed, a piece of driftwood.
Don't know if Demi Moore fits into this category, but she's another one. She does a similar thing to Jodie where she will jut out her chin when confronted with any kind of negative situation, or one in which she wants to convey indignance.

I was going to say Melanie, R51, but I don't think she was ever considered 'serious.' I see her more in the Rom/Com Kate Hudson vein of actresses who are exceptionally watchable and very good at playing themselves. She was better than Kate, but never serious.

True r47. I have wondered if maybe the Hollywood elite didn't help the whole me too thing along in hopes of getting rid of Harvey and his strangle hold on the Oscars. Once he got his hands on Miramax that was the death of the variety in well done small films. I haven't liked any of the actresses he forced on us either, all of them are forgettable. He's got horrible taste in talent. He did his business like a mafia boss, people on all levels were afraid of him. I hope excellent smaller films have a rebirth now that he's gone.

Julia Roberts is a move star, of course you always know it's her in every role, that's what she is paid for. It's the same thing with Harrison Ford and many others. Within the realm of her acting range, Julia does just fine, she's rarely inauthentic, doesn't make cliched choices, has a solid emotional accessiblity and has been moving in some performances. For what she does and what she's paid to do, she does just fine.

Vera Hruba Ralston was not a "serious" actress, she was a figure skater who married the head of the lowest-budget, least-respected studio in Hollywood! She was regarded as a joke in her day, and ever after.
Greer Garson was taken very, very seriously in her day, for some reason. Same for Ikea Knightley during the last ten years.

I just watched Pride and Prejudice again and ugh, Keira Knightley’s wig is just atrocious! But even worse, she really is very stiff. All she does is sort of pull her lips back from from her bottom teeth. The woman who plays Cersei on Game of thrones does this too, but to sinister effect.
by Anonymous | reply 93 | April 23, 2018 8:12 PM |
If you turn the sound off of the Kiera Knightly version of "Pride and Prejudice", it suddenly looks like a teen boy in drag is playing Lizzie Bennett.

by Anonymous | reply 94 | April 23, 2018 8:19 PM |
Actually Republic was far from the worst of the old Hollywood studios, R92. It was considered the best of the "poverty row" studios, a term you can google. Republic turned out many excellent westerns over the years. It was home to John Wayne during the first half of his career and occasionally John Ford. Sometimes they even managed to turn out a true quality film like A Quiet Man. There were many much worse studios.

I have a soft spot in my heart for Greer Garson. I absolutely adored Mrs. Miniver. I managed to track down the sequel to it, called The Miniver Story, and I loved it, too. I cried my eyes out. They managed to get everyone back for it except for the actor that played her son. Greer was married to him IRL, but they divorced before the sequel, and it was not a happy parting. I remember the lingering, on-the-mouth kisses she gave him during Mrs. Miniver. Awkward!

Knightly's performance in Pride and Prejudice is one of the worst I've ever seen. She spent the entire film with a bemused smirk on her face, something which Jennifer Ehle's Elizabeth Bennett had done to great effect on occasion in the '90s BBC version, but not for the entire film.

The fact that Kristen Stewart was lauded by critics (and received awards for) her not-terrible but otherwise unremarkable performance in 'Clouds of Sils Maria' says it all: they were shocked that she could give a halfway decent performance in a not-very-challenging role.

Greer Garson is profoundly dreadful in Mrs. Miniver.
Kiera Knightly has the most irritating vocal inflections ever - especially in Pride and Prejudice. In fact her performance in P&P makes Cybill Shepherd's performance in Daisy Miller seem like the work of a great thespian.
Zooey Deschanel can't even play herself in interviews.
And I can't say this enough:
Isabelle Adjani is awful.

Rewatching the film years later, she doesn’t bother me.

?????? Who thinks Margot Robbie is a better actress than Frances McDormand?
by Anonymous | reply 152 | November 26, 2019 4:18 PM |
Angelina Jolie, anyone? Her only award-worthy performance was The Changeling. I don't understand her box offices. She's more a publicist than an actress.
by Anonymous | reply 153 | November 26, 2019 4:21 PM |
I for one, think that Viola Davis is better looking when she is plumper.
by Anonymous | reply 154 | November 26, 2019 4:22 PM |
Jennifer Lawrence is totally overrated. A product that Weinstain tried to sold as the new hot Meryl Streep. I think the best part of her career is already over, she doesn't have her godfather anymore. And I think she is nice, don't get me wrong. Not saying this because I dislike her or something
by Anonymous | reply 155 | November 26, 2019 4:25 PM |
"Not saying this because I dislike her or something"
Sure sounds like you do. For some reason DLers have it in for her, even though she's been giving good performances since she was 18 (Winter's Bone)
by Anonymous | reply 156 | November 26, 2019 4:33 PM |
R156 No, I don't. I can give you that, she was fine in Winter's Bone and American Hustle, but that doesn't make her the kind of super talented actress Hollywood tried to sell us for a few years. OK, she's not the worst but Def not one of the tops. Emma Stone, on the other hand, proved me a lot in The Fauvorite.
by Anonymous | reply 157 | November 26, 2019 4:39 PM |
I adore Barbara Stanwyck, but she really didn’t hit her stride until the late thirties. She was awful in some of her earlier movies. Guess it was just a lack of experience in front of the cameras.
Greer Garson was terrible. Leonard Maltin said it best - all poise but no grace. And she wasn’t very photogenic. Close set eyes and those NOSTRILS.
by Anonymous | reply 158 | November 26, 2019 4:47 PM |
Easily the worst actress of all time is Ali McGraw. When I see her old films from Goodbye Columbus (which was funny) to Love Story and others- well, she's just awful. That said- on chat shows and in interviews she is a lovely woman, smart, creative and beautiful- still.
by Anonymous | reply 159 | November 26, 2019 4:47 PM |
Lana Turner. Iconically beautiful, but a genuinely terrible actress.
by Anonymous | reply 160 | November 26, 2019 5:02 PM |
Okay, r159 wins. McGraw must be the worst actress to ever get an Oscar nomination.
by Anonymous | reply 161 | November 26, 2019 5:04 PM |
Geraldine Page and Diane Ladd.
These "serious" actresses full of ticks and methods and "watch me act" mannerisms are terrible in all of their performances.
Well they each gave only ONE performance - they just did it in several movies.....
by Anonymous | reply 162 | November 26, 2019 5:07 PM |
EMMA FUCKING WATSON I just can't stand her. She has made me hate movies that were good just because her performance. I think the most overrated actress today. In my opinion is an insult for actors like Saoirse Ronan or Chalamet in Little Women to share screen time with her like they had a seemingly talent.
by Anonymous | reply 163 | November 26, 2019 5:07 PM |
Only a datalounger would think that Chalamet was miles ahead of Watson in the acting department
by Anonymous | reply 164 | November 26, 2019 5:09 PM |
R164 Really bitch? You can dislike Chalamet, but honestly you can't say he is as bad actor as Emma Watson. You just can't. Emma's talent is just unexisting.

R115, Anne Baxter is part of the reason I don't think All About Eve is a classic on the level of Sunset Boulevard--who in their right mind would believe that Anne Baxter is a threat to Bette Davis?

Another vote for Natalie Portman. Very bland.
by Anonymous | reply 169 | November 26, 2019 5:43 PM |
R166 that one. For God's shake, they even offered her to star La La Land. What do Hollywood see in her?
by Anonymous | reply 170 | November 26, 2019 5:48 PM |
I always found Baxter to be stubby looking, with short arms and a nonexistent neck. They picked her for the role of Eve because she resembled the original choice for Margo Channing, Miss Claudette Colbert. She too was odd looking, short and neckless.
by Anonymous | reply 171 | November 26, 2019 5:52 PM |
Emma Watson is truly awful.
Surprised to see so much GOOP hate in this thread. Usually DLers agree that she’s a pretentious cunt but a really good actress. I personally love her.

by Anonymous | reply 186 | November 27, 2019 5:21 PM |
I'm kind of amazed at how quickly SJP went from very attractive to horse-faced. That has to be a record, even Lindsay Lohan took a while to really look 45. SJP was hot in Hocus Pocus, LA Story and The First Wives Club and then became hideous by Season 2 or 3 of Sex and the City. I think a lot of people would be genuinely shocked to find out that SJP was at one point very attractive.

Rachel McAdams should stick to light comedy. Her Oscar nomination was a joke. She gets a lot of credit because she’s the kind of woman that straight men imagine marrying but she’s quite mediocre.
by Anonymous | reply 233 | December 3, 2019 2:05 PM |
R233 McAdams sucks at accents (see A Most Wanted Man or that lesbian movie with Rachel Weisz) but I do really like her as an actress. I do think she should be getting more comedy roles because she’s an excellent comic actor.
by Anonymous | reply 234 | December 3, 2019 2:11 PM |
R234 Through no plan of my own, I saw State Of Play, The Time Traveller’s Wife, Midnight In Paris and Spotlight on successive days. She was a nonentity in the latter 3 with her Oscar nomination being truly bizarre but was quite awful in State Of Play. Her line readings were unbelievable to the extent she sounded like a teenage girl, and Russell Crowe had to carry the weight of their scenes.
The lesbian movie with Rachel Weisz is a case in point. She was cast as an ultra-Orthodox North London Jew (!) at the behest of the director. She is creamy and sweet and pretty and a fantasy figure for men.
