Sounds totally rational to me. His views are becoming more counter culture while the left is becoming more prurient. His views shouldn't be shocking to anyone who have noticed this seismic shift or is capable of thinking for themselves. Blind allegiance to one political party does not make one more enlightened. He very calmly articulates his point of view and is unwilling to be subsumed by groupthink. Good for him.
by Anonymous | reply 14 | April 18, 2018 3:54 AM |
Nobody is talking about blind allegiance to one political party, you dope. And many of the things he said in the interview are demonstrably false, just the repetition of propaganda and lies the rightwing media in the US and UK spout to keep people angry and scared.
by Anonymous | reply 15 | April 18, 2018 5:59 AM |
R14 What did he say that was so outrageous? He's not attacking muslims but attacking violent crimes committed in the name of Islam. Also, saying that the majority of terrorist crimes are committed by muslims is not the same thing as attacking all muslims or painting them with the same brush. People act as if he's calling for a master race or something when he doesn't suggest anything of the sort. He also believes that religion endorses cruelty to animals, which is also true, and not surprising to anyone who have known about his animal rights beliefs. Lastly, he mentions the racist bit because he himself has been called racist for stating his views, which are based on logic.

r24 So much leather in that film. He has leather furniture, leather upholstery in his car, leather shoes. He doesn't mind killing animals to adorn himself. I remember him slagging Bowie off in that film, saying that he hasn't done anything interesting since the 70s. Morrissey was about to make his comeback then so he was in a stronger position than Bowie, but 15 years later Bowie came back with two of his strongest and most interesting albums ever, while Morrissey quickly descended into bland lyrics, mediocre music and embarrassing pronouncements.

r36 They're all infamous quotes by Morrissey going back to the 80s. The "reggae is vile" quote was from a 1986 Melody Maker interview:
[quote]"Reggae...is to me the most racist music in the entire world. It's an absolute total glorification of black supremacy." He went on, "Ultimately, I don't have very cast iron opinions on black music other than black modern music which I detest. I detest Stevie Wonder. I think Diana Ross is awful... I think they're all vile in the extreme. In essence this music doesn't say anything." The interviewer responded, "You seem to be saying that you believe that there is some sort of black pop conspiracy being organized to keep white indie groups down." What was Morrissey's response? "Yes, I really do."

God, he's think, isn't he?
by Anonymous | reply 38 | April 19, 2018 5:54 PM |
He took a pop at Diana Ross?? He deserves all the shit he's getting but you just know journalists must be falling over themselves to interview him. It's like with Germaine Greer, they don't bother discussing her scholarship or contribution to academic knowledge anymore - instead it's all let's get a stupid quote about not being a Cocker Spaniel and watch those clicks pile up! Forget Morrissey's musical career, let's ask something about brown people! It's sad that this is now the only way he manages to remain in the papers and he walks straight into it every single time.
by Anonymous | reply 39 | April 19, 2018 6:04 PM |
And when he's inevitably called out on these dumb, inflammatory statements (which he's been making for DECADES at this point), he always just falls back on his stance as a put-upon victim, deliberately misunderstood and misquoted by the evil press, yadda yadda. And then wonders why everyone in his life ends up "betraying" him (a constant complaint throughout his autobiography) while he's left miserable and alone. When it's painfully obvious that he must be impossible for any sane person to deal with for any extended period of time.
by Anonymous | reply 40 | April 19, 2018 6:18 PM |
Compare Morrissey's comments about detesting black music in 1986 to David Bowie's interview below in 1983 on MTV where he berates the channel for not playing black artists:

It's worth pointing out that the NME issued an apology 5 years after the interview in which he said that immigration was ruining the country and you literally never hear the British accent anymore in Knightsbridge. One of the main tactics used by Putin in European elections is spreading disinformation about immigration and trying to destabilize the EU by promoting anti-establishment candidates like Le Pen in France. It worked in the UK during the Brexit referendum, but it didn't work in France.

Another classic Morrissey statement, this one from 2011; he was performing in Warsaw just after the right-wing, anti-immigrant fascist cunt Anders Breivik killed 69 people in Norway (one as young as 14):

"Just before performing his single Meat is Murder, he reportedly told the crowd: "
From a Guardian article about the incident. Note the words: " allegedly " and "reportedly".
No direct recorded evidence? At a concert?
Even his comment: the Chinese are a "sub species" takes on a different tone in context: he called the Chinese people a "sub-species" over their treatment of animals and attitude toward animal welfare.

In Britain everything revolves around class. People treat you according to your accent and lineage. Those who studied at Oxford or Cambridge (and who were already upper class) are the Brahmins. They love to mollycuddle and look down upon ‘the rest’ in equal measure. Just read The Guardian and you’ll get the idea. Northern/Western Europe in general is very egalitarian. In Scandinavia or Germany nobody cares about your snob credentials or family heritage.

It's interesting how Morrissey and The Smiths were openly targeting a gay male audience in the earliest days, esp. with the "Hand In Glove" cover and so on. He gave his first and only interview with a gay magazine in 1983. Obviously, The Smiths became far more successful than Morrissey or anyone else had ever expected and he quickly retreated into the ambiguity that he's since worn to shreds.
by Anonymous | reply 102 | April 20, 2018 4:04 PM |
R102, I always read their stuff as gay, maybe wishful thinking? But Morrissey’s solo work is definitely about men - one album is called “Swords!” Listen to Goodlooking Man About Town and Dear God Please Help Me.
by Anonymous | reply 103 | April 20, 2018 5:20 PM |
I worked at a Tower Records location when Malajusted was released. I was a huge fan of the Smiths and liked a few of his solo songs, but the experience of dealing with him during the instore soured me forever. I can't even imagine why he would have been booked for such a thing, as he was known for his grumpiness even then, but I suppose the label pushed for it.
It wasn't the whole "don't talk to him" thing, as we're there to do a job, not get in the way. But it was the "don't make eye contact" business, many demands on what we were wearing, what was on the walls and displays, the lighting, the demand to have a particular scent in the store, the weird demands re: rearranging the store. Two weeks before he arrived we had four new employees, all who looked like muscle bound models, and they all magically disappeared the day after his (short and terse) appearance, so I assume they were there to be "his" idea of a Tower employee. (Celibate, my ass.)
But the biggest thing was just hearing how he spoke to his own people. I was glad he didn't direct any of that ugliness at any of us, because I would have told him to fuck himself. As it was, the band played half of one song, and he was supposed to do a meet and greet with a handful of select fans who had donated to some vegan cause of his, but when someone brought a Smiths album he hissed at them - hissed - like a snake. And flounced like a petulant child.
Some big punk dude said, loudly, "What a cunt!" And people clapped. No one was impressed by his behavior.
If I ever saw that bitch again I would pelt him with Big Macs.
