Which was the better Lost in Space theme song?

The countdown music freaked me out as a child (it still makes me slightly anxious listening to it today!), and so I always loved the second one much more. so dramatic!

I have used my Big Briar Theremin to electronically contact the late Lév Termen himself. He's totally into #1.

I recognize #1 as the iconic version, but #2 has a wonderful "Dynasty II: The Colbys in Space" faux-grandeur.

The new show makes musical reference to the 2nd version in the end credits, not the first version. i think the 2nd version is more iconic.

It's a case of Galactic Apples and Cosmic Oranges. Both have strong merits. It's interesting how the later versions of tv themes tend to be the ones people remember or prefer. In addition to LIS, consider the themes for The Munsters, The Dick Van Dyke Show, I Dream of Jeannie, Mary Tyler Moore. As the seasons progressed, all were given different arrangements, lyrics, or were replaced completely.

I prefer the original theme, maybe because the second one reminds me of the bridge in Del Shannon’s Runaway.

Version one had the trombones, Version two had the French horns.

It's no contest. The flatulent rapey trombones must bow down to the sophistication of the elegant French horns.

OP, thanks for posting this. Both themes are good, but I like the first one just a bit more.

R5, it's a real stretch to say The Munsters theme song changed. They re-shot the opening in the second season, but the theme song was basically the same, they just hyped up the guitar sound.
