Well, there's someone I hadn't thought about in years, but who I'm surprised to discover died relatively young. Has someone been in touch with Markie Post?
by Anonymous | reply 1 | April 16, 2018 10:38 PM |
I can admit this to you all: I had a huge gayling crush on him on Night Court and Cheers. it was the way he dressed, compared to the ugly clothes on Laroquette, his sense of humor and the magic.
by Anonymous | reply 2 | April 16, 2018 10:39 PM |
Hadn’t he become a paranoid recluse in recent years? Wonder what the cause of death is.
by Anonymous | reply 3 | April 16, 2018 10:42 PM |
Loved Night Court...still funny as fuck
by Anonymous | reply 4 | April 16, 2018 10:42 PM |
Nooooo. I loved him on Cheers. That episode when he and Coach team up was the best. I recall watching that ep as a kid and it was so satisfying when he walks back into the bar with the money.

Also played Dave Barry on "Dave's World."

by Anonymous | reply 8 | April 16, 2018 10:45 PM |
Aww. I liked him and Night Court. Not a mega fan of the show but always found it, and him, enjoyable.
by Anonymous | reply 9 | April 16, 2018 10:46 PM |

Wow. I don't believe it. I mean, I believe it but a part of my brain is going, "Does not compute." He's one of those celebrities that for some reason I never thought could drop dead this young, kind of like John Ritter or Rik Mayall. Oh well. :-(

Who dies of natural causes at 65? I suspect suicide too. Just like everyone who dies of “aneurysms”. My teacher docs told me this years ago when I was a baby resident. I liked him. This is sad. He also knew magic.

The show was lightly amusing, and I really liked the cast, including the short stays by Ellen Foley, Karen Austin, and Paula Kelly. (DL, you never let me down!)
The mini-reunion on 30 Rock was hysterically funny.
Markie Post has a nice bit in an episode of the second season of The Santa Clarita Diet on Netflix.
Harry was mischievously sexy, and I am not surprised that some of us had little crushes on him. Like a poster above, he was someone that I just couldn’t envision dying. But we all do.
RIP.

According to TMZ (I won't link because I know that many of you don't like links to TMZ)
[quote]We spoke to Harry's son, Dashiell, and he tells TMZ ... his father passed away of natural causes.
So, it wasn't an obvious suicide (ie, hanging, shot gun). Hope it doesn't end up drug related.
Wonder if he had an illness that wasn't known to the public.

This one was a surprise. He's been out of the spotlight for a long time.
Shelley Hack was supposed to have played Christine originally, but they fired her and scrapped the footage she filmed and brought in Markie Post. They really had a lot of problems on settling on the right female cast until finally managing to with Markie and Marsha.

When she died, Florence Halop was two years younger than Harry was at his death, yet she looked twenty years older. She was cute when she was young so I guess I get why actresses get plastic surgery.
by Anonymous | reply 78 | April 17, 2018 1:00 AM |
I remember thinking Dan filled his suit pants well, but probably had not fully come to terms with why I thought that at that time. If I remember correctly, Laroquette was an Emmy shoe-in for awhile.
It was a silly show, but could be entertaining and had a cast that meshed well. I am surprised you never see it in syndication anymore.

Re being a Republican-in his age range, not the same as today.
He very well could have died if natural causes, such as a heart attack or a stroke. The minister of the church I grew up in died two days after his 65th birthday. He was always in shape, was married, had little stress in his life. It shocked everyone.
by Anonymous | reply 89 | April 17, 2018 2:29 AM |

I read that he went to New Orleans and opened a magic shop and bar in the French Quarter that were gutted by Katrina. I remember reading an article, maybe in the New Orleans paper, that he rebuilt, but business never recovered so he finally gave up and moved to North Carolina. The article made it sound like the experience had exhausted him both financially and mentally.

In the 90s, my friend and I went to a nightclub in San Diego near the Omni Hotel. I remember people were gathered around a car in the front and there was a man talking loudly but very friendly. This was about 2 years after Night Court ended. It was Harry and he made a point of saying hello and shaking everyone's hand, including me even though I just approached him out of curiousity. He was pretty cute then.

I remember watching and liking the first few season of Night Court but after the Halop left and Markie Post joined the cast I stopped paying as much attention to it. Really liked the first woman before Ellen Foley and Markie and thought she and Harry had good chemistry.

My cousin was an officer in some national magicians association back in the 80s and Anderson was a fellow officer, I think, or at least a ranking member. He knew him pretty well, so I asked if he had indeed become a recluse like someone upthread said. He replied, and I quote, "No."
That's all I was getting out of him, so I went to Google and saw Anderson had done some small college films and made appearances at magician's conferences until mid 2015, then not a single news article on him afterwards. He's probably been sick.

If Night Court were rebooted, or done now, it would be a single camera comedy with dramatic elements, and not be nearly as acerbically funny or Un-PC as the original.
It would be neutered and die on network TV, but might survive on cable or Netflix.
Casting would be hard to do, though.

Harry Anderson was under-rated and under-appreciated.
Abut so was and is John Larroquette.
by Anonymous | reply 134 | April 18, 2018 1:24 AM |
John Laroquette had a fair amount of critical praise at the time. He was nominated for 6 Emmy awards for the role of Dan and won 4 times.
by Anonymous | reply 135 | April 18, 2018 1:34 AM |
He loved New Orleans but it became a hell hole after Katrina. He even had his face smashed into a wall by some nut who blamed him for the demise of some club that used to be there (Anderson opened a business there). I remember seeing him on Bill Maher's show and he seemed like a likable, decent guy. As for "Night Court"...well, I liked it for a while but it got stale like all tv shows tend to do if they're on long enough.
by Anonymous | reply 136 | April 18, 2018 1:42 AM |
John Larroquette was NEVER "under rated and under appreciated." He kept winning Emmy awards, year after year, for "Night Court" and won so many times that he took himself out of the running at some point because indeed it was unfair to keep giving the Emmy award to the same actor over and over and over again.
by Anonymous | reply 137 | April 18, 2018 1:47 AM |
John Larroquette will always have a place in my heart because he played a gay character in an 80s teen comedy and didn't make him a cliched, offensive stereotype that was so popular at the time.

by Anonymous | reply 141 | April 18, 2018 9:58 PM |
Larroquette also tends to get nominated even for guest appearances. His sadly brief role on the Practice 15 years ago was excellent, and I’m pretty sure he was nominated for it, he might have even won.
His overall career really isn’t what it ought to have been, which is a shame.
