Well, to be honest, when Schindler's List came out several of my co-workers had not known how bad it was. My jaw dropped - I literally could not believe it.

In general, the quality and quantity of history being taught in public schools is appallingly poor, at least when I was still in school. One example: every 4th grader in California is taught about the Spanish missions, and was given an arts and crafts project to recreate what a Spanish Mission looked like using popsicle sticks, cardboard, glue, all that stuff. Well, that was all fine and dandy, except that they completely glossed over the brutal mistreatment of Native Americans and how they were subjected to slave-like conditions. I am not blaming the teachers, but that was the mandatory curriculum back then. Lots of omission, glossing over things, and lack of nuance.

This does not surprise me. I'm a history professor, and what used to constitute common knowledge no longer does. The Holocaust is still supposed to be in the curriculum of public school education in many, if not all, states. History in colleges, however, is (like the humanities in general) under assault. Millennials would study about events like the Holocaust, Stalin's purges, and the mass murder under Mao in a core course on West Civ or World history. Sadly, more and more colleges are dropping core courses in favor of STEM courses or so-called "useful" courses.

Still, I am surprised by the lack of knowledge of many things among millennials and others. I was sharing an office with a graduate student the day Winnie Mandela died. After reading of her death, I turned to the grad student (in history) and told her of Mandela's passing. She had no idea whom I was talking about. Maybe I'm wrong, but I would have thought knowledge of Apartheid-era South Africa and civil rights across the globe would be a no-brainer, especially to a grad student in history. I'm at a loss to explain the lack of curiosity about the world among all sorts of people today.

We used to have only 3 major tv networks. That’s how knowledge became “common” in the US between 1945-1995. Everyone as watching a limited amount of information. When we were growing up and it was raining on Saturday, we’d stay indoors and watch old movies with WWII backdrops (there was nothing else on tv in the afternoonsJ. Best Years of Our Lives, Mr Skeffington, Casablanca, Mrs Miniver, Mr Roberts, Wackiest Ship in the Army. There were tv shows like Combat, 12 O’Clock Hogh, Baa Baa Black Sheep.
