There was one aspect of George and Marlon's relationship that was troublesome to me, and I think that it affected our marriage negatively. Not only did they spend evenings together, they talked endlessly on the phone. It was more Marlon than George. Marlon liked nothing better than to lie on his bed, phone in hand, and talk about whatever came into his mind. I thought George's mistake was to allow Marlon to use up so much of his time, time I thought he could have better spent doing other things.
I can't say that overall and through the years, I was close to Marlon. I think he saw me as an obstacle to his having the relationship he wanted with George.
Three days before Marlon died, he called George. He was in a very emotional state. These were Marlon's words during that phone call to George. He was in tears when he spoke them. "I just wanted you to know I love you, Georgie. I'd take a bullet for you. I've said it before. If you had a cunt, we'd have been married a longtime ago."
George spent the afternoon and evening with Marlon. Shortly after George left Marlon's house, Marlon was taken to the hospital, where he died

Marlon's mother was an alcoholic. She'd go on benders and they'd find her in some motel. His father didn't step into the primary caregiver role. It's no surprised that Marlon needed attention to that degree. He never had it as a child.
