Ben Stiller Brings Gay Teen Comedy “Alex Strangelove” To Netflix
Riding the wave of Love, Simon’s success—and just in time for Pride—Netflix is premiering its own gay-teen romantic comedy this June.
Alex Strangelove tells the story of Alex Truelove (Daniel Doheny), a well-rounded senior with a wonderful girlfriend named Claire (Beach Rats’ Madeline Weinstein), and a bright future ahead of him. But as Alex works towards achieving one last teenage milestone—losing his virginity—he meets Elliot (Antonio Marziale), a handsome, charming gay kid from the other side of town.
The new arrival sends Alex on a rollercoaster ride of emotions as he explores his sexual identity and navigates the pitfalls of high school. Joanna Adler, Isabella Amara, and William Ragsdale also star.
Director Craig Johnson (The Skeleton Twins) describes the movie, produced by Ben Stiller, as “a fun, funny, and flirty film located down the street from Pretty in Pink, around the corner from Superbad, and right next door to new neighbor Love, Simon.”
Strangelove will be released in selected theaters and on Netflix June 8.

Does it really matter, R1? It's called "acting" for a reason.
And good for Ben Stiller, who has always been relatively G&L friendly,, and all the others behind this project, regardless of their own sexual orientation.

Ugh! Daniel Doheny is probably straight but certainly Canadian.
So not only did he beat out some poor young gay actor for the part, no American was even given the chance. It just never stops.

How obtuse r61.
People don't have PG-13 conversations in real life. I'm not talking about doing drugs and sleeping around, I'm talking about them talking them using profanity and talking about sex/masturbation. Which real teenagers do. The benefit of not being restricted to being a family-friendly movie.
by Anonymous | reply 62 | June 8, 2018 2:40 PM
|
It really depends upon the group of teens, and where. Some don’t use profanity, often for religious or cultural reasons. That’s true in general. Now, specially for Love, Simon, I’m not sure what would be true to life for them. They might not have been Socially conservative, but they lived in small town Georgia. As a southerner, I can tell you that openly using profanity is still thought of as crude, immoral, or uncouth. In fact, it’s still often technically illegal in many places.z

It's fine, but the hetero action gets more attention (and skin) than the gay action, which we all should have seen coming. I think the guy who starts Alex down his path of coming out has a total of three scenes.
by Anonymous | reply 64 | June 8, 2018 5:01 PM

Yeah, the movie is ok (love the best friend and his sister bickering at each other), but if you watch for the gay content, it's probably - if you are generous - 1/3 of the movie. The main plot is the relationship between Alex and his girlfriend Claire. Hell, I believe Alex's friends have more screen time than Elliot (Antonio Marziale).
But I do like the movie and the soundtrack is ace (features The B-52s classic Dance This Mess Around).
by Anonymous | reply 65 | June 8, 2018 5:47 PM
|
I'll say however, that Alex and Elliot did have really great chemistry. Probably more than Nick Robinson and Keinyan Lonsdale, although that wasn't for lack of trying on the latter's part.
The actress who played Claire was quite good. As was Katherine Erbe as her mother.
Have there been howls of "bi-erasure!" from the usual quarters yet?
by Anonymous | reply 66 | June 8, 2018 5:57 PM

Erbe is in another gay film called Dating My Mother, so I guess that's her thing now.
by Anonymous | reply 67 | June 8, 2018 5:59 PM

Shouldn't there be howls of "gay erasure" instead, if the gay content only takes up a third of the movie?
by Anonymous | reply 68 | June 8, 2018 6:01 PM

No, because Alex spends some time wondering if he's bi before realizing that he's full on gay.
by Anonymous | reply 69 | June 8, 2018 6:21 PM

Oh, I see. Well, that's a very common experience at that age so I hope there isn't any blowback to that plot from the bisexuals.

That's not all. Alex attempts to have excruciatingly embarrassing sex with two girls, but he also spontaneously initiates a kiss with that same boy while they are on the boy's bed. It's just a kiss, but it's the most sexually electrifying moment the movie will generate, and it scares Alex.

[quote]It's just a kiss, but it's the most sexually electrifying moment the movie will generate, and it scares Alex.
It's a good kiss. And Alex having to imagine Elliot shirtless to get it up to even attempt to have sex with Claire is probably familiar to a lot of gays.
I just don't buy that in 2018, it never occurs to Alex that he might be something other than straight until he meets Elliot.

The straight making out scenes are, imo, played up for laughs. As r89 mentions Alex has to think about Elliot in order to be able to put on the condom.
The film is about Alex's struggle to figure out whether he is gay, bi, or straight.
[quote] I just don't buy that in 2018, it never occurs to Alex that he might be something other than straight until he meets Elliot.
Spoiler:
There is a scene close to the end where he almost drowns in a swimming pool and he remembers a repressed memory of getting a boner while showering with other boys when he was a boy himself. Which helps him to finally admit to Claire that he is gay.

Funny that in the early parts of the movie, when he's going through various types of animals and their mating rituals, he's not quite sure what animal he would be, and settles on a penguin. Given that it's one species that has well documented homosexual behaviour (even made it to storylines in Will & Grace and Parks and Rec).
Not sure I liked the use of "strangelove" in the title but overall it was an ok teen comedy/rom-com. Like a lighter less indie version of Perks of a Wallflower. Perfect stay-at-home date movie for young gaylings to "Netflix and chill" if they still call it that.

THIS MOVIE IS AWESOME!
It's SO much better than LOVE, SIMON -- Ben Stiller is actually cool and he knows what he's doing, unlike that lame-o-zoid Greg Berlanti.
Strangelove is in pretty much in the same situation -- but he is MUCH less of a douche than Simon and much more likable. No over-the-top, high school movie cliches like embarrassing people in front of the whole school, which plagued SIMON.
Daniel Doheny is absolutely adorable. Most of the cast is. And there are ACTUALLY FUNNY jokes, like you'd expect from Ben Stiller and comedians who know what they're doing.
3.5 OUT OF 4 STARS!!! This is the movie that should have been in theaters!

Alex Strangelove is about the struggle of figuring out your sexuality. Once the lead finally figured it out the whole coming out process (to his friends) was skipped.
In Love, Simon the struggle of figuring out your sexuality was skipped and the movie is about the struggle of coming out to your friends and family.
In both movies they end up with the guy they love.

It's disappointing that some people on this thread have no interest and place no value on a show just because it's "only focused on the gay romance 1/3 of the time."
You are dependent upon straight people. The way straight people treat gays and interact with us should still be important to you.
If you're such a Philistine that it has to be gay sex all the time, then just stick to porn and quit whining about movies -- which are supposed to be for everyone.
It's like you think that straight people can't enjoy gays or interacting with them. You really think there should be no movies for straight people exploring how they interact with gays?

LOL. Are you serious? Even in 2018 some people are still under that spell that being gay is WRONG and they can't trust their own feelings and urges and have to ask others for advice, or seek their guidance, because they believe others know them better that they know themselves. They need others to tell them what is right and what is wrong and push their own treacherous feelings aside.

r107, you are, of course, correct. I don't believe actual homosexuals have to 'figure out' their sexuality, rather, we struggle with accepting it in the face of societal disapproval.
Bisexuals usually go through the process of 'figuring out' their sexuality, as it relates to sexual and romantic preferences between the two sexes. Apparently many gay-leaning bisexuals will misidentify themselves as gay (for varying reasons) and that's why this idea of gay people 'figuring out' their sexuality persists.

[quote]Hey friends, I recently watched and loved the film Alex Strangelove, now available only on Netflix. I thought it was so fun and relatable to my experience as a confused and quirky teenager. I was recently back home a couple weekends ago, and I couldn’t help but think back to my days as a high schooler. I remember being so quiet and insecure. I was definitely not popular, but also never really bullied. I just blended into the crowd as a nice guy, trying so hard to be liked. I remember love was always so confusing, and how my biggest fear was that people would find out or think that I was gay. I held onto this insecurity throughout college and into my mid twenties, before finally mustering the courage to come home and tell my family. I actually told my Mom while sitting around this pool. I was so afraid, but I remember being so relieved after the words left my mouth. I think it is so cool that there are now movies like Alex Strangelove that have leading characters who are gay. It would have meant so much to me to see characters like myself in the media as a high schooler. The film is all about figuring out who you are, whether queer, nerd, jock etc., and that it is ok to be yourself and have quirks. I’m really happy with who I am today, but I also wish I could’ve found this confidence much earlier. This film is so fun, and it is now available only on @netflix .

Antonio Marziale has stated he's straight, yet at the age of 21 he's only done gay roles. Is she taking a cruise down the River Denial?

Yeah why is everybody referencing Ben Stiller? He only has producer credits (which anyone with a name can get with very little effort).

Loved the ending with the real life videos, very moving.
Agree pretty much with everyone else that the girlfriend is the best actress in the bunch, Truelove Is adorable, and his best friend is the breakout discovery.
From the candid shots seen in some links here, it looks like the Indian (Pakistani?) supporting actor is very gay and very out.
The soundtrack and cultural references, from Keith Haring to the B-52s to Sixteen Candles, we’re all much geared towards their parents generation. I guess they want people of all ages to enjoy this film.
Finally, I can’t believe a Dusty Springfield song made its way into the soundtrack, especially at such a crucial moment. That was a pleasant surprise

I finally watched this. It is cute, but there is no getting around this is not a gay love story. It is primarily about Alex and Claire's relationship, with the gay love interest playing a supporting role.
Though Alex's coming out journey reminded me a lot my own in certain respects, I also had a great highschool girlfriend who eventually called me out for behaving like I wanted to have sex with her.
The main cast (Alex, Claire, Dell) were all pretty likable and talented.
[quote]There is a nice scene where Daniel Doheny shows off his bulge wearing underwear on a hotel bed while waiting for his girlfriend to come out of the bathroom.
I noticed that too. Alex seemed to have a nice sized bulge in those underwear, maybe magnum condoms weren't so optimistic.

Interview wit Craig Johnson, he has been trying to get this movie made for 10 years.
[quote]The spark that I was talking about was actually lit in 2008, when I went to a concert for the British pop singer Mika. I was at his concert and I was blown away by the number of out-of-the-closet teenagers that I saw there, just living out loud, mingling in groups and holding hands, with no shame. I just thought, “Wow, high school is a different time!” That’s when I thought, “What if I took my coming out story and did it as a high school movie?” Then, I just saw the whole movie. I wrote the first draft, in 2008, in two months. That was 10 years ago, and I have been trying to get it made, ever since. It’s been my passion project for the last 10 years, and I would pretty consistently update it. The biggest rewrite happened in the last couple of years, just as high school life has gotten a little more progressive. Kids have gotten more open-minded. Coming out in high school is now not only an option, but there’s the option to come out as gender queer, or trans, or asexual, and everything in between. I thought that was a fascinating world to set a story of sexual confusion in because that makes everything more confusing. When you have all of the options available to you, you have to be really honest with yourself about what you want, which is Alex’s struggle.

[quote]No over-the-top, high school movie cliches like embarrassing people in front of the whole school, which plagued SIMON.

The problem with the ending is that the producers picked the wrong guy for the Blue character. It really should have been Miles to play Simon’s love interest. I just didn’t feel the chemistry between Simon and Bram. No, I have nothing against mixed relationships, I just think the producers wanted things to be diversive and surprising. But, I wasn’t surprised by the ending, I had a feeling that it was Bram in the emails.

I read an interview with the author of the book who was very happy with the completed film. She indicated that the one non-negotiable aspect of the book when she talked with the writers/director was that Blue had to be Bram, a mixed race boy, just like in her book. The filmmakers agreed with her.

So I enjoyed this more than Love, Simon. Mainly due to the raunchiness of it all and because I identify more with goofy characters. I couldn't get past the Helix looks of the lead at first but I quickly forgot about that because of his acting chops; he's so in control of his face and his body, which is perfect for comedies. He looks like a taller, narrower KJ Apa, but actually competent when it comes to acting. I liked the lead actress quite a bit as well.
I made a gif out of this awkward cute moment.

I didn’t like the beginning. I thought it started too snarky, vulgar, and hipster social justice warrior jargonish. It seemed to lack the quaint all-American Appeal of Love, Simon. However, I thought it ended strong, with a more mainstream charm.

They could have updated the script a bit more from 2008 - the reference to WWJD bracelets was out of place

Watched it last night - it's OK. I really wanted to know more about Elliott (e.g. he had graduated high school already, so what is he doing now?) so that was a wasted opportunity in order to focus almost solely on the guy-girl relationship so that straight audiences won't run for the hills. Some of the dialogue was very clunky and forced (how many high school kids would even know what NAMBLA is?) and the guy playing Alex looked like a young Bill Hader (who was in the director's much better SKELETON TWINS).

It's strange because that acronym gets automatically censored and then uncensored shortly after. Happened to me in the past as well. The moderator probably approves of it manually or something.

I wish I liked this more than I did... the opening scenes were excruciatingly overwritten and overdone. But, it did get better and although I initially wasn't too into the gay love interest, he grew on me as it went along - although the B-52s dance scene was over the top. The girlfriend was fine but the storyline was ridiculous and impossible to buy. Either he has a raging hard-on or he doesn't, it doesn't take a brain surgeon to figure out if your boyfriend isn't rock hard 100% of the time when he is around you, let alone kissing you, that he just isn't into you and 99% chance he is gay (especially 17-year-olds). Please.
Commendable effort, but LOVE, SIMON was genuinely moving and entertaining whereas this was just a stupid comedy with a dash of sincerity/"message". 5/10.

Alex Strangelove was much better than the other recent Netflix teen movie Kissing Booth, based solely off the lack of cringe induction. Although Doheny is waaaay less fuckable than thick bodied twink Joel Courtney.

It was good, but I still have my gripes with it. This is the second mainstream gay movie that we have gotten this year that has been completely devoid of gay sex. Because, you know, gay teens don't have any.
