I've been writing to prisoners for nearly 15 years. I've had some interesting experiences -- some good and some so-so.
Write to a prisoner? Have you had a good or bad experience doing it?

I love it!
by Anonymous | reply 1 | April 8, 2018 1:09 AM |
No, but you should tell us about your interesting experiences, OP.

You ARE a great writer, OP! You keep us in suspense. I’m guessing in chapter two you’ll go into what “good” and “so-so” mean?

Tell us more, and how it came about!

Stay away

I've written to a few that have been fairly fascinating. I've been used by straight guys pretending to be gay. Several I have met through visits and then met when they got out. I've written so many that I can kinda feel when I am being played now. I also have found that if the conversation is all sexual, the correspondence won't last very long. They are fun at first, but you have to have other things to talk about. Once during visitation, one guy popped his junk right out of his jumpsuit for me to peek at. I'm currently writing 5 now. Three straight and two that are gay or bi. I have met 5 on the outside and fooled around with a few to boot.
writeaprionson and prisonpenpals are all good sites. Most now used Jpay, which is the "email" service they use for state prisons.

Any from Kentucky, OP?

"My sentence has been overturned on a technicality. I'm getting out on the 21st. Now finally we can make all our dreams come true."
by Anonymous | reply 8 | April 8, 2018 1:57 AM |
R6, why are straight guys using you to pretend to be gay? What are they getting out of it?
by Anonymous | reply 9 | April 8, 2018 1:59 AM |
They want him to put money in their commissary accounts r7. That is what all prisoners are really hoping to get out of it.
by Anonymous | reply 10 | April 8, 2018 2:21 AM |
R9 I meant.

If a hot prisoner wants to write me a few dirty letters for a candy bar, sign me up. Of course, I'll use a fake name and get a PO box two towns over.

Jeremy Meeks approves of this thread.

Do you write to murderers, rapists and child molesters, OP?
by Anonymous | reply 14 | April 8, 2018 2:50 AM |
I had a guy that wrote me several times from jail. We were in jail together, and he was going to be in longer and he had no one visiting him (which I did). I visited him several times, and brought him some new socks (important in jail) and put some money in his account. The letters I got from him were a childish, illiterate scrawl. Poor guy. But my boyfriend insisted that I end contact with him, so I did. I actually ran into him at the grocery store last year, and we had a flash of recognition, but then continued on our way.

Why, R14? Do you want to compare notes?
by Anonymous | reply 16 | April 8, 2018 3:07 AM |
I'm surprised that r6 talks about sexual conversations - I thought all inmate correspondence was monitored. I'm curious about being used by straight guys - do they put "gay" in their profiles? It's funny when you see a cute guy talking about sweet stuff and then you see he's in prison for murder and won't be out for 20 years. On the other hand, the thought of my mouth and asshole reintroducing a newly-released convict to society is kind of tempting....
by Anonymous | reply 17 | April 8, 2018 3:07 AM |
They do monitor, R17. Good catch.

Yes. They do this because they know gay men are very giving. Kentucky prisons are known for this on writeaprisoner.com. Forums over there warn new people to be careful with Kentucky male inmates because these inmates are actually straight 9/10 times.
by Anonymous | reply 19 | April 8, 2018 3:33 AM |
Since you say that too, R17, I’m questioning the OP.

How does one correspond with young men in juvenile detention?

R15, why are socks a thing in jail?

Yes they do monitor correspondences, but not verbatim though. You can talk about lots of things. Pictures are the sticking point though -- they are very scrutinized. Yes, I have written to prisoners in KY. I have found that KY, TN and TX are the worst as far as guys wanting to use you. Not all prisoners want money. I have two that send me money for stamps just to write to them. Sometimes they ask for pics of celebrities. I try to avoid murderers and death row inmates -- they tend to be a little intense. I know this from experience. I actually don't mind SOs because they are not all child molesters or rapists. You'd be surprised.
I also do a little bit of research before I write anyone, looking up news articles about them/trials and crimes.

Do you use writeaparisoner.com?
by Anonymous | reply 27 | April 8, 2018 3:27 PM |
Why are you so worried about them using you? I mean aren't you, in a way, using them?
by Anonymous | reply 28 | April 8, 2018 3:35 PM |
You are sexualizing them writing sex letters.
by Anonymous | reply 29 | April 8, 2018 3:44 PM |
R22, Socks are important because they take your street clothes (except for underwear) during he intake process, when they issue you those orange jail uniforms. Jail is a sterile, concrete, steel and glass environment, and it was COLD when I was in, which was during the winter. Your bunk is just a steel shelf with a flimsy plastic 'mattress' with just a thin blanket for cover. They issue these cheap plastic booties to work, and your feet can feel the cold coming from the concrete floor. So having your own supply of socks is important.
Dan is a tall, muscular, handsome black guy, and he was very protective of me, a terrified little white guy. I was transfixed once watching him coming out of the shower room, with a little white towel wrapped around his waist, singing in his deep, booming voice. I felt so guilty at the time, since my boyfriend was visiting me every day to keep my spirits up.

I blame Kim Davis.

I'm not worried about them using me. I haven't sent any money for several years to prisoners. I like writing and they have interesting perspectives. I am using them to build a friendship and I also vent - it can be therapeutic at times. I like to collect their stories of how they grew up and what happened to get them in prison.
by Anonymous | reply 32 | April 8, 2018 5:29 PM |
Do you write the women prisoners to get their story?
by Anonymous | reply 33 | April 8, 2018 5:37 PM |
A little white towel! And then what happened, Uncle Bottom/R15? Did he let it drop right in front of you?
by Anonymous | reply 34 | April 8, 2018 5:46 PM |
r26, what's an "SO"?
by Anonymous | reply 35 | April 8, 2018 7:38 PM |
SO= Serious Offender.
How I knew that, I have no idea.
by Anonymous | reply 36 | April 8, 2018 7:42 PM |
He was referring to sex offenders, people.
by Anonymous | reply 37 | April 8, 2018 7:48 PM |
Sex offenders range from adults raping other adults, adults raping children, children raping other children or even under age and under age people getting it together. Could also be a vindictive person cries wolf against someone who is/might be innocent.
by Anonymous | reply 38 | April 8, 2018 8:53 PM |
R34, No he didn't, and I'm not Uncle Bottom.
