I don't know how long ago it was filmed, but she is on the CNN Kennedy series. Looks great.

She's going to be the Chiller convention in NJ later this month. Doubt she would be doing one of these if she had dementia.

Oops, she was at the Chiller convention last year.

I sincerely hope the convention serve Petrossian beluga, which she prefers. And the champagne had better not be burned.

She did an interview earlier this year with the Root.
She's just slowing down and that's perfectly normal.

I used to watch her in a TV series called Julia when I was a kid growing up.
by Anonymous | reply 19 | April 7, 2018 11:47 PM |
Julia was on for 3 seasons, 86 episodes. Diahann Carroll played a nurse.

Some designer queen at Target made a bedspread based on Julia's coat at the beginning of the 1968 Christmas episode.

I think Miss Carroll has not been forthright about her birth year. Officially it is 1935 but acquaintances swear she is 3 years older. That would make her 86 this year.

Who in the world does she play on CNN's Kennedy series??
by Anonymous | reply 31 | April 15, 2018 2:48 AM |
R31, it's a documentary, not a docu-drama. She "plays" someone who was present & performed at the MSG May 19, 1962 early 45th birthday party for JFK at which he was serenaded by Marilyn Monroe.
by Anonymous | reply 33 | April 15, 2018 3:24 AM |
Carroll performed at events for JFK on more than one occasion. She was the leading black female entertainer of her generation.

That's a little overboard.
by Anonymous | reply 35 | April 15, 2018 3:33 AM |
Wasn't she discovered as a teenager on one of those early 1950s TV talent shows? So her age couldn't be too debatable.
Her voice back then was quite remarkable and unique. Just listen to her on the OBC of House of Flowers singing A Sleepin' Bee or I Never Has Seen Snow. It's sad to me that most people only know her from Julia and Dynasty.
by Anonymous | reply 36 | April 15, 2018 3:34 AM |
She was really born in 1935. NY birth records from 1910-1965 are available on ancestry.com and it has July 17, 1935 as her birthdate and she is also listed as being 5 years old on the 1940 census records.

Happy belated birthday Diahann!

Met her at Chiller and she is gorgeous. She does not have dementia, she was a complete pleasure to meet. I have "Claudine" signed by her and my friend got her Julia Barbie signed. Couldn't have been more pleasant and doing these shows can be exhausting especially for someone in their 80's.
by Anonymous | reply 48 | July 18, 2018 5:25 PM |
Thanks r48. I am so pleased to hear she is doing well. She is fabulous!
by Anonymous | reply 49 | July 19, 2018 6:47 AM |
Her second autobio "The Legs Are The Last To Go" is a good fun read. The first one -from the 80ies, i think- is a selfindulgent mess. Found both in my second-hand bookstore for 2€ and since moviestar-bios are my guilty pleasure, it was a nice find. Between those two books, she came off to me as somebody who took quite a personal journey, asked herself the hard honest questions and takes responsibility for fucking up. I came to respect her for that. Lot´s of diva stuff too,of course, like her discovering clothe that don´t need to be drycleaned, because she needed a wardrobe for playing on the floor with the grandkids.
Fav. storie from the early 70ies.
Miss Carroll shopping in Beverly Hills. She sees a canary yellow rolls royce coming down the street. Behind the wheel Diana Ross. Miss Carrolls reaction? : " There goes the neigbourhood!" (to be fair, she tells this story to illustrate how out of touch she was with the changing time)

by Anonymous | reply 58 | August 9, 2018 8:46 PM |
Not a fan of hers and have read many stories about what a cunt she was to work with. But you gotta pay her some respect. She really was the first black female lead in a TV series in the 60's! The show was awful. But she did it and pulled it off for three seasons, despite a lot of protesting back then.

She was fabulous on Dynasty and The Colbys. If I'm not remembering wrong, they even let her sing a few times. Her character was supposed to be Blake's (half) sister, right?
I remember those interviews after her casting was announced. "I am looking forward to being the first black BITCH on television," or whatever. Along with casting Stephanie Beacham as Sable, I guess that in a way the producers were signaling to Joan Collins that there were other divas in the ring, when it came to contract negotiations.

[quote] Lena Horne did not like her. She said that Diahann stole her techniques and her movie roles and simply copied her. No lost love there.
Lena felt that way about every younger black female -- mostly because it was true, many female performers stole a little bit of Lena's persona, phrasing and stagecraft. However, Diahann was her own gloriously unique creation. A superb vocalist and performer AND Diahann was a gifted actress. She came along at a time when things were slightly better for black performers and she could take advantage of opportunities that Horne was too old for. They got along as well as they could.
Diahann got her own taste of it with the ascent of Leslie Uggams, and more significantly, Diana Ross.

Natalie IS wearing sparkly pajamas, and she looks sensational!
Diahann Carroll has always been a difficult and often delusional person. She's also been a really mean drunk, not opposed to making insensitive racial remarks once half in the bag. I should know I used to serve her plenty of booze and really hated her bizarre drunken nonsense.
by Anonymous | reply 70 | August 12, 2018 2:42 AM |
I like how Leslie Uggams went up to Diahann Carroll and paid her respects. I love when old legends show courtesy to one another. I'm sure both of them have juicy stories to tell about being black stars in the old days. They were two of several pioneers in the integration of the entertainment world back in the 60s.

One of the other alternatives for the Dominique character was that she would be Cecil Colby's long forgotten first wife (and probably improperly divorced to boot.). Would have been a far richer storyline than Blake's half sister, which nobody wanted to own (and how Dominique amassed a corporation saving fortune to lend to Blake more than once - as a singer - was lazy even for Dynasty.)
I saw her in Sunset Boulevard. Really wasn't impressed.

I totally agree. It's a shame that they wouldn't take the interracial theme more boldly forward back in the 1980s.
A personal aside: I was in the military when Dynasty was still on, and remember the shock of some of my white shipmates when they saw Dominique Deveraux and Garrett Boydston kissing, with them mentioning that they shouldn't had shown something like that on network television.
