Revenge is not a basis for defense or mitigating a murder. Neither was in imminent fear of harm when they committed murder. If they believed their murdering of their parents was justified, why cover it up. Why not call the police? Why go on a spending spree right after?

Moreover, both Erik and Lyle were over the age of eighteen when they killed their parents, so they no longer had to be under the care of José Menendez either. There was no clear and present danger to them anymore even if he did abuse them as children.

The other thing that really sealed the deal for them was that almost immediately after the funerals Erik started a restaurant chain for buffalo wings called "Mister Buffalo," with the first restaurant in Princeton, NJ, where Erik was an undergraduate.
