Teen Magazines

Anyone here read these as a gayling? This was as forbidden as porn back in the day where no one who was not a girl would be caught dead with one of them. I remember scanning the covers but was too embarrassed to buy them or even be caught flipping through them. They are pretty hard to find nowadays and command serious coin on Ebay.

As a gayling? Fuck I have a vintage collection of them I’m jerking to now!

As a teenager growing up in Europe in the 80s, I was totally addicted to the German teen mag "Bravo"

I still have a bunch including one off specials that featured Madonna somewhere on the cover. There were TONS from 1984 to about 1993,when she turned 35 and aged out of the teen mag scene.

As an eldergay, I remember my sister was addicted to the two top teen magazines: "16" and "Tiger Beat". They featured a steady stream of Donny Osmond, Bobby Sherman, David Cassidy, etc. The one I couldn't figure out was some nobody named Sajid Khan. Apparently his only claim to fame was being in some movie about an elephant with Dennis-the-Menace alumni Jay North. But no-talent Sajid was in almost every issue.

I have to face that eventuality.

R2, it’s still hard to fathom that Bravo featured nude photos of teenagers. Does it still?

by Anonymousreply 6April 5, 2018 1:41 AM

I lived for these things. I couldn’t wait to get my allowance every Friday so that I could run to the store and buy two or three. I’d often remove the pinups and hang them on my walls. This was during my Kirk Cameron obsession phase.

They're still around.

I had a huge crush on Sajid Khan and I watched his TV series (Maya). There is an episode where he and Jay North go skinnydipping and it was thrilling. Sajid has faded into obscurity in India, and there is another Sajid Khan now who is a producer/director, about 20 years younger than the first Sajid, but fat and unattractive.

I subscribed to Teen People.

by Anonymousreply 10April 5, 2018 1:49 AM

Nope. Never did. The girls in my school used to read them though.

by Anonymousreply 11April 5, 2018 1:53 AM

In response to R6: from today's point of view, yes. But, back then, as a teenager I didn't find it all that strange and neither did my parents who would give me the money to buy it. My recollection was that the photos were not geared towards adults, and they were decidedly unsexy. Usually, accompanying some cautionary tale of teen pregnancy, even some young people sharing their stories how unprotected sex left them HIV+ (which was extremely scary back in '84 or so.)

I was an avid reader of Bop! magazine and Teen Beat. I think Bop! had a penpal section and I corresponded with a boy from Maryland for a short time. I graduated to Smash Hits around age 12 since I was more into musicians than squeaky clean sitcom stars.

Sixteen and Tiger Beat...I remember them well. It was so delicious to look at the photos of the dreamy guys and find other what their measurements were and what their likes and dislikes were. And didn't Sixteen have some kind of "dream date" contest where you could win a date with a teen idol? I seem to remember some guy going out on a "dream date" with Donny Osmond.

Was there ever an exclamation point in Bop's title?

About what did you correspond? Scenarios, exchanges, fucking Jonathan Taylor Thomas?

by Anonymousreply 16April 5, 2018 1:59 AM

yes, op. I bought them religiously every month when they came out. Bop, big Bopper, 16, Teen Beat, Tiger Beat. This was during the 90210 Jonathan BrandisJonathan Taylor Thomas era. I loved this obscure group(but popular with the teen mag crowd), The Party, a mixed gender pop group so that was my excuse for buying them.

Excuse me, I recall some GIRL going out on a dream date with Donny Osmond. If only it HAD been a guy! That would have really been something.

by Anonymousreply 18April 5, 2018 2:05 AM

I gave them up when I realized I would NEVER get that coveted invitation to Annette's slumber party.....

R10 I did too! I thought it was supposed to be less girly but it probably appealed to the exact same demographic.

by Anonymousreply 20April 5, 2018 2:19 AM

The ones from the 80s were the same headlines, Michael J. Fox, Corey Haim, Kirk Cameron, Win Michael Jackson 's glove!, compete in a Madonna look a like contest!, Win Debbie Gibson 's new album

by Anonymousreply 21April 5, 2018 2:25 AM

Chad Allen, Jay R Ferguson, Jonathan Knight...sigh...

Well, two out of three ain't bad.

by Anonymousreply 22April 5, 2018 2:41 AM

Yes, in the late 1990's and until about 2002-2003. Some of the boy bands were really good looking then. Jeff Timmons and the Lachey brothers from 98 Degrees for instance. I'd collected a lot of pictures and posters of The Backstreet Boys (especially Nick Carter) some of which were on my bedroom wall. There was also a Christina Aguilera poster on my door so I didn't appear too interested in only men. (What a joke!)

by Anonymousreply 23April 5, 2018 2:48 AM

I had pinups from those mags of everyone from Janet Jackson to Keanu Reeves strewn across my bedroom walls. I remember Alyssa Milano being the queen of Bop, the Big Bopper and Teen Best. She even had an “advice column” in one of them called Ask Alyssa.

by Anonymousreply 24April 5, 2018 3:25 AM

R24, I remember ask alyssa! I remember her advice about shaving with disposable razors: discard after 5 or 6 uses after shaving your legs. the blades become dull, and you're likely to knick yourself.
