James was the point man for ABC throughout this event, though towards the end they beefed up their coverage with Matt Gutman too. Maybe so that a more "American" reporter was visible to viewers at home? But Matt likely had a secondary role here?

I got the impression they sent Matt Gutman in as relief person. James had been there for over a week at that point without any time off, so the network seemed to send Matt in to take over the story.

Apparently James refused to leave, knowing that it was a giant story that could only boost his standing at ABC. And the network respected his choice to stay with the story. So, they had Matt there covering other aspects of the story, but James was still the main reporter.

Makes sense, R127, it seems James did dozens upon dozens of reports, must be exhausting. Incidentally James' latest IG story shows that his bf prepared a welcome bouquet for his return, how romantic!

ABC's Matt Gutman has written a book about about the boys rescued from the cave in Thailand. It just came out this week.

However, Matt wasn't the ABC's lead reporter on that story. James Longman was. James was there reporting every day for 2 weeks. Matt was sent to Thailand to relieve James about a week into the story, but James declined to leave, knowing it was going to be a huge story when they were finally rescued. Consequently, Matt ended up doing some supporting stories in Thailand about the rescue, while James continued as the lead reporter.

So, how is it that Matt got the book deal and not James?
