American expats living abroad feel mortified and embarrassed by Trump

As the rest of the civilized world looks upon them and their country in disgust.

He's a menace to the world.

by Anonymousreply 1April 3, 2018 11:47 PM

Well, it certainly is an embarrassing time to be an American. As if it wasn't bad enough that idiot Republicans put Bush into office twice, what do they do except push an even bigger and more dangerous idiot into office?

by Anonymousreply 2April 3, 2018 11:50 PM

Who fucking cares? There is nothing we can do.

by Anonymousreply 3April 4, 2018 12:05 AM

I wouldn't be surprised if a fair number of those expats voted for Trump and are now living like kings and queens, exploiting locals for cheap wages. They deserve scorn.

by Anonymousreply 4April 4, 2018 12:06 AM

Who fucking cares?

by Anonymousreply 5April 4, 2018 12:07 AM

The word expat is bullshit. They're immigrants. White immigrants

by Anonymousreply 6April 4, 2018 12:41 AM

They should feel mortified.

by Anonymousreply 7April 4, 2018 9:33 AM

I've been an ex-pat for 40 years, and I couldn't care less about the US or who is President.

Canada, even with its empty suit in power, is the only country right now that can really hold its head up high. Perhaps the Scandinavian countries as well. Every country right now hates their leaders. They’re all laughing stocks. Even Macron, whose approval ratings are lower than Trump’s. Theresa May is vilified beyond belief. Merkel is spat upon. Italy is in tatters. The world is just a mess. This ain’t the Bush era where it was Crazy America vs a relatively normal rest of the world with the exception of a few.

They were able to GTFO out this shithole abomination of a country, so no, sorry if I feel no pity for them. They should be kissing whatever foreign ground they're standing on every morning.

My partner and I have three Master's Degrees between us, and we're still not eligible for Canada's "skilled worker" program.

Actually, it's much different this time. I've lived overseas on and off since 1995.

The prevailing sentiment in Europe is sympathy, even pity. Out of fear that it could have been them.

Most of them were overrun by fascism in their histories, and things had been getting very, very close with the dominoes of Brexit, Orban in Hungary, PiS in Poland. Only the rejection of Wilders in NL and Le Pen in France prevented Europe from sliding into the same cross-continent madness, and there's still worry with AfD, Liga, Catalan separatists, Golden Dawn in Greece, and of course Putin's shenanigans.

Back during the Bush years, we got much more hostility, because there was a slight chance you were for the war. You had to raise your hand as a non-supporter. Now, no American in Europe could possibly be seen to be in support; if you've left the country, you've done so for a reason. I haven't encountered a single American Trump supporter across Europe, even Republicans.

I'm not mortified or embarrassed by Trump at all. I am disgusted with an overall American culture who were stupid enough -- and this includes media and political establishment -- to be taken in by a demagogue on the level of Mussolini or Hitler. And it's pretty easy to remind Europeans 1) they did this first, and 2) are thisclose to doing it again. But I remain proud to be American, because our very best people are still pretty damn good once we get rid of this cancer. And if we don't, then we deserve a similar WWII German or Italian fate.

[quote]My partner and I have three Master's Degrees between us, and we're still not eligible for Canada's "skilled worker" program.—Fuck you, Justin

I can't believe it. You certainly sound like you'd fit right in.

by Anonymousreply 12April 4, 2018 11:21 AM

It is true, I have a master degree in chemistry and I am not eligible either. Maybe it is a program for people with low skills but not for professionals.

by Anonymousreply 13April 4, 2018 11:25 AM

Canada only wants good photo-op immigrants.

by Anonymousreply 14April 4, 2018 11:45 AM

I don't blame them. If I were living in another country, and I saw that the US voted Trump after two terms of Dubya, I would be thinking "wtf is wrong with those people? Are they idiots?" top.

by Anonymousreply 15April 7, 2018 5:07 PM

Trump is an ultra liberal Democrat. A daughter who married a jew. His wives are foreigners. He's part of decadent Hollywood. Fits right in with Jewish new yorkers. How bloody liberal do you want America to be??? Most of the foreigners he's trying to keep out want to kill gays. The bushes were liberal. We need a real conservative free enterprise president who takes guarding the border seriously.

I was shocked when I learned that my advanced studies in Sanskrit meant nothing to the fascists at Canadian immigration.
