Love, Simon - Thread 2
by Anonymous | reply 600 | June 20, 2018 1:45 AM |
I loved the movie! The story plays out like a mystery, replete with false leads, misread signals and other red herrings, as Simon tries to identify Blue. Could Blue be a woman, I thought. It reminded me of one Perry Mason episode where a prime suspect is discredited, or is he/she? It was fascinating, touching, euphoric. Well-cast, with family members that look related (brown hair, brown eyes). I've seen it twice!
by Anonymous | reply 1 | April 2, 2018 12:52 AM |
It just needs to make 10 more million to recuperate it's cost. Mary! It should be close !
I imagine FOX is the distributor world wide., right? Or is it one of those cases where it sold the distribution rights to other companies in other markets.

by Anonymous | reply 4 | April 2, 2018 1:21 AM |
This article says Love, Simon made $1.4 million this weekend in Australia where it opened in 4th place (also Fox at the very least is distributing it there).

R4, there are a couple of scenes early in the movie, one at school and one at home in his bedroom, where his jeans perfectly frame his otherwise flat ass, making it look rounder and fuller than it actually is. The wardrobe department earned their pay for the entire movie when they clothed him in those jeans.
by Anonymous | reply 6 | April 2, 2018 1:26 AM |
R5 Wonder if Nick auditioned for Ready Player One.
by Anonymous | reply 7 | April 2, 2018 1:27 AM |
R2 It's at 31 million domestic box office, rule of thumb is that a film needs to make twice it's production at the box office to break even. The rumored budget for Simon was $17 million. I needs to make a minimum of $34 and it will likely be passed that by the end of the week, so the film is in good shape.
by Anonymous | reply 9 | April 2, 2018 2:28 AM |
I just watched it today and totally enjoyed it. It’s a cute, entertaining and endearing film. Much better than I’d expected even tho it’s no where near CMBYN on the artistic & sophisticated level. I strongly recommend it. Support our community!!!
Nick Robinson is great. Love him. ❤️❤️
by Anonymous | reply 10 | April 2, 2018 2:42 AM |
WAY better than CMBYN, which was tepid, dull, and listless.
by Anonymous | reply 11 | April 2, 2018 3:04 AM |
What I like about Love, Simon was that it's one of the few LGBT films that I've watched in the past while where I left the theater feeling happy and uplifted.
by Anonymous | reply 12 | April 2, 2018 3:05 AM |
CMBYN is about sexually fluid bros. Love Simon is about a gay boy. Apples and oranges in multiple ways.
by Anonymous | reply 13 | April 2, 2018 3:06 AM |
Exactly, R12. Exactly.
by Anonymous | reply 14 | April 2, 2018 3:35 AM |
Loved the film. Very uplifting and endearing. Questions tho as I’m too old to think:
1) kids nowadays can fall in love via emails? 2) to whom he is actually attracted?
Elsewhere in the top ten, both Sherlock Gnomes and Love, Simon, held on well in their second and third weekends respectively. Sherlock Gnomes held on better than expected after a soft debut last weekend, delivering an estimated $7 million weekend, pushing the film's cume to $22.8 million while Love, Simon dropped 37% in its third weekend, finishing with $4.8 million for a domestic cume just over $32 million.
Estimates have it now topping $32m after the holiday weekend. There are four new wide releases next weekend so I expect it to start winding down its run within the next week. It already lost over 400 theaters since last weekend.
by Anonymous | reply 16 | April 2, 2018 6:01 AM |
Go see n support the movie. It’s a lovely film and deserves the support from the LGBT community.
by Anonymous | reply 17 | April 2, 2018 6:07 AM |
R16 A 400 theater drop in a film's third weekend is actually a pretty good drop. Most films start to drop theaters after its second weekend. Out of the four films coming out next weekend, only two are wide releases (Blockers and A Quiet Place). Love, Simon will likely drop in markets where it's doing moderate business but stay in the big city markets I wold imagine for at least another two to three weekends. The film will likely drop to 9th place next weekend.

by Anonymous | reply 24 | April 2, 2018 5:20 PM |
R16 Simon will continue in the major markets for the next few weeks at least. I estimate a total box office of around $45 million domestic.

My husband and I, (in our 50's) felt the same way. We wished there were movies like this when we were teenagers. Hell, you'd be afraid to even go to a movie like this 25 years ago. I thought it was a nice film, though cheesy in some parts. I'm glad that it is being well-received.
It's at 31 million domestic box office, rule of thumb is that a film needs to make twice it's production at the box office to break even
It's 2.5 times the production budget, not 2x.

R33 - I didn't say I wouldn't go to a movie like this. I said you'd be afraid to. I marched on Washington 3 times in the 80's and 90's for gay rights, got knocked unconscious by a rock to the head just for walking down the street and lost 75% of my friends in the 80's to AIDS. You should keep your mouth shut before you hurl ignorant insults.
by Anonymous | reply 34 | April 2, 2018 9:41 PM |
Sorry about the rock to your head, r34. I had something like that happen to me in Greenwich Village just for walking down the street in 1976, but it didn't make me afraid to go to movies like Making Love in 1982 or Longtime Companion in 1989. I'm not going to get into an AIDS/March bonafides competition with you, though.

Script is excellent: another example - when Simon tells his friend Abby in the car that he's gay, she says "Oh." Then she says "I Love You." Not "I love you, anyway," or "I love you In spite of that." No qualifiers.
by Anonymous | reply 40 | April 2, 2018 11:08 PM |
Settle down Marys !!! Love, Simon is a romantic comedy for tweens. It's doing well for what it is.
I remember when In and Out came out in the late 90s, with a budget of $35 million dollars, and everyone thought gay films would go mainstream from then on. But then came the Bush years and it seemed like the momentum took a pause.
In retrospect those 8 years of the Bush presidency took a toll on the gay community. Had Gore won and gay rights would have gone mainstream a bit earlier, I don't think the Homophobia caused by the Trans brigade would have caused such damage to the gay community. We would still be saying the word "[bold]gay[/bold] and the Trans community would have had their own separate movement.
Love, Simon doing well is bittersweet.
by Anonymous | reply 41 | April 3, 2018 12:06 AM |
The weekend actuals are out and Love, Simon made slightly less than estimated. The film came in with $4,767,488 and ended up in 9th just narrowly behind Tomb Raider (7) and A Wrinkle in Time (8th).
by Anonymous | reply 42 | April 3, 2018 12:12 AM |
Ugh. It was supposed to do 5 million on Easter weekend. It's going to be crawling to those last 10+ millions.
by Anonymous | reply 43 | April 3, 2018 12:24 AM |
Love love this heartfelt and uplifting movie. I pray they will make more movies like CMBYN and Love Simon in the future. This generation is so lucky.
One small complaint tho. In the beginning when he said “I’m just like you”, I literally rolled my eyes. Sorry love, I’m not just like you. I wasn’t born in a wealthy family. I’m not white, good looking and popular like you. I had to work thru high school to earn money to support my very poor family. No I’m totally not like you, except I have one huge-ass secret: nobody knew I'm gay.

The idea that a movie, specially from a studio needs 2.5 x to break even is false and pure PR fabrication.
I work in development and can assure you this is not the case. No studio movie loses money and it won't be different with this piece. Only independent films lose money.
Whenever you read that a movie was a flop it only means the projections of profit weren't met and they're usually as out of the loop as the fabricanted budget the PR team decides to create for a movie.
Most budgets are way lower than advertised, and its sole purpose is to launder money and inflate their market value.
Well if you're interested about that John August breaks down the mathematics at his podcast I think the episode is called How movies make money, though he doesn't address the money laundering part. That's what we at development have to come up with to justify spending.
by Anonymous | reply 49 | April 3, 2018 3:53 AM |
It's a great John Hughes type of film with a gay protagonist. It's perfect. Not all movies need to have sex, go watch porn and grow the fuck up.
by Anonymous | reply 50 | April 3, 2018 4:14 AM |
R48 Hope they saved that footage for the Blu-ray!
by Anonymous | reply 51 | April 3, 2018 4:16 AM |
This movie drops each week, it's not going to be some sleeper like The Greatest Showman and Jumanji, which were still top ten weeks later. Long after even Star wars had come and gone.
I think this movie absolutely does need to make at least twice it's budget. That figure includes advertising/promotion. Some films are promoted more than others, and this one was promoted heavily. As discussed in the other thread, studios can't rely on video sales/rentals as much as they have in the past.
by Anonymous | reply 52 | April 3, 2018 7:15 AM |
[quolte]The idea that a movie, specially from a studio needs 2.5 x to break even is false and pure PR fabrication.
You do know that promotion of a film is not free, right? The first two weeks the studio takes the bigest % out of the Box office sales, after that the theater's % take keeps increasing.
x2.5 is about right.
by Anonymous | reply 53 | April 3, 2018 7:37 AM |
R52 pretty much every film drops weekend to weekend. Anything below 40% is considered a healthy drop and Simon has been averaging about 36%. The film's word of mouth has managed to keep it from big drops.
Sadly it appears the film will drop out of the top 10 this weekend. That doesn't mean it's in bad shape but it's a crowded market. Tomb Raider, A Wrinkle and Time and Love, Simon roughly did the same business this weekend with Simon only falling behind by tens of thousands which in box office is like pocket change. Simon out performed both films on Friday and was narrowly beaten by Tomb Raider on Saturday by about $30K. It was Sunday's business that cost Simon 7th place as Simon under performed the original estimates maybe people didn't want to see "the gay movie" on Easter Sunday?
Once Simon is out of the top 10 the theaters outside of major markets will drop the film at a faster rate. I still expect it to make more than $40k domestically and it's slow international release schedule means we won't know the final numbers until later in the summer.
I actually think Fox should have released the film earlier in February when the market was less saturated with big blockbusters. February 2 only had Winchester as the major release and that tanked and February 9 had had Fifty Shades and Peter Rabbit which again not really going after the same audience.
by Anonymous | reply 54 | April 3, 2018 1:01 PM |
R84 I agree that the number of big blockbusters out in March has dipped into Love, Simon's box office somewhat. Certainly if you look at the neck and neck box office of Tomb Raider, A Wrinkle in Time and Love, Simon, it's clear they're battling for the same market share.
I think a February 2 release would have been better for Love, Simon as it could have capitalized on Valentine's Day. That being said the reason that didn't happen was because Fox released Maze Runner on January 26 which was targeting the same young adult market as Love, Simon so they likely would have felt they were competing with themselves. Ironically Maze Runner tanked at the domestic box office give its budget (although it did good internationally) and in the long run Simon will be the more profitable film for them.

You absolutely should go see it, R57. The film is exceptionally charming and entertaining. Plus, you will exit the cinema with a smile on your face unlike many other LGBT films which leave you depressed or angry once the credits roll. Bring a tissue or two as you might/will get a bit emotional during the last half of it.

R17 that is why me and the bf went to it. Movie was good but we were the only 2 gay men there and there was maybe 10 of us in the entire theater. Since we are atheists we went to this movie on Sunday. Several people have asked me what I did over the weekend and when I said we went to see Love Simon, they ask what’s that? and look very depressed that we did not spend the day eating. Oh well.
by Anonymous | reply 60 | April 3, 2018 5:39 PM |

Spoiler alert! I saw Love, Simon, and the ending was a big let down. The mystery of who Blue was - out of all the candidates they chose the PC minority member, the black guy, which actually detracted from the gay theme.
There was quite a few black characters in the movie which hijacked the gay theme. Hollywood only recognizes the one minority, blacks, but pretty much disregards all the others. They should have been single minded and catered completely to the gay theme.
When I see black oriented movies I certainly don't see gay characters all over the place. Give US our own special movie!

And yes, Bram/Blue was the same race in the novel. So take it up with the author for ruining your Aryan vision.

Early estimate for Tuesday has Simon making $747K and placing 9th behind Wrinkle and Tomb Raider. That's slightly lower than Monday. Tuesday's ticket sales were lower than usual across the board, but coming off a long weekend perhaps fewer people went to cheaper Tuesday showings. The good news is by tonight the film will have brought in twice it's production budget from domestic returns alone.

Simon officially broke $34 million domestically which is twice its estimated production budget of $17 million. Also as of April 3, the film made just over $2 million in foreign box office having opened in New Zealand and Australia and opens in the UK today.

It has now passed Nick Robinson's Everything Everything which was at $29,765,733 after 20 days and ended with $34,121,140. Everything Everything was cheaper (10m) but it got the same exposure in theaters (opening weekend in 2,800 locations)

R67 you do know some black people are gay too and vice versa. Being gay is not relegated to white people.

by Anonymous | reply 91 | April 6, 2018 5:03 PM |
R89 LGBT films tend to make more internationally than domestically. One interesting thing about Simon's box office, apparently something like 20% of the domestic box office was generated in Canada (Canadian box office is counted as domestic box office). That's unusually high because Canadian ticket sales usually average to about 5% of domestic box office totals.
by Anonymous | reply 92 | April 6, 2018 5:18 PM |
The Canadian box office was so high because Shawn Mendes kept going to see it.
by Anonymous | reply 93 | April 6, 2018 5:42 PM |
In Singapore they have have banned Simon to under 21 years old. That's because it is not explicit, otherwise it should have been totally barred as movies should not "promote or justify a homosexual lifestyle"

by Anonymous | reply 98 | April 7, 2018 6:27 AM |
I loved it. I thought it was much better than CMBYN, which was beautiful but boring. And I love that it’s set up as a mystery story of sorts.
by Anonymous | reply 99 | April 7, 2018 6:55 AM |
Simon slightly under performed expectations Friday, and brought in an estimated $875,000 it's likely the film will take somewhere around $2 million this weekend. In order to hit the original estimates of $2.5 to 3 million it needed to bring in around $1 million on Friday.
R98 the 42.5 million it needs includes international box office so it will have no problem getting there (it's already pushing $40 million when international box office is included). The film has doubled it's estimated production budget from domestic alone so we're all good.
As of this morning, the film's domestic stands at $35.6 million and my conservative estimate is that it will be hovering around the $37 after Sunday's numbers are in. I suspect the film will be hovering around the $40 million mark by Thursday night. Problem is Simon is only playing at 1464 theaters this week and now that it's out of the top 10, it's going to drop a lot of theaters next Friday. Next weekend it will likely only remain in the large city markets only. So if you want to see the film, this weekend or week is a good time to see it!
I'm very curious to see how Love, Simon does internationally. Looking at other LGBT films like Carol, Moonlight and CMBYN, they all drew higher international box office than domestic. Carol made $12.7 million domestically, but $27.5 million internationally; Moonlight $27 million domestically, $37 million internationally; CMBYN $18 million domestic (as of Friday) and $20 million internationally (as of Friday).
One final thing. Simon is doing fine box office and here's something to think about. While some are arguing the fact that it is an LGBT centered film is why it's not perhaps breaking out as much as they'd like, it may have more to do with the fact it's target market is teenagers. Teenage films have been struggling at the box office for several years now. The 16 to 21 crowd don't go to the movies in as large of numbers anymore. Most teenage rom-coms have struggled to pass the $35 million mark at the box office.
by Anonymous | reply 100 | April 7, 2018 3:52 PM |
I agree with your final point, r100. A key takeaway for the industry is that films with minority leads/characters (LGBT, PoC) are now likely to outperform others in the teenage demo.
That bodes well for new gay media that young people will enjoy, and that’s a very good thing. I, for one, would’ve loved a shiny film like this when I was in high school. It would’ve made me feel less alone.

While Love, Simon is movie about a teenager, adult audiences are reacting as strongly, perhaps even more so, than teenage audiences. Maybe there was a missed marketing opportunity there.
There have been some great LGBT+ films released during the past few years so I'm wondering if Simon will be one of those films that enjoys a long life on the gay film festival circuit. It certainly is going to have its share of marathons on the Freeform (former Disney) channel thanks to the young female teen audiences who adore the film.

I'm in my 50s and found it powerfully affecting. The scene with the dad... god I wish I could have had that moment with my dad. But my dad isn't emotional. Supportive, he loves me, but it's not a topic that's ever really discussed. I'm luckier than a lot, but man, that scene had me almost breaking down in the theater. Especially since I always have to help my dad with computer stuff, which he just does NOT 'get'.
It's a teen rom-com sure. But it's so much more than that.
It's not perfect, no. But it's damn good.
I've asked everyone that follows me on twitter and facebook to go see it. I have no idea if any of them did. But I felt I had to ask... and I never 'shill' for anything on my pages.

I saw that movie on HBO the other day. It wasn't completely awful, but I could see why it flopped at the box office. It was based on the worst YA novels out there.
by Anonymous | reply 110 | April 8, 2018 3:42 PM |
R110 Not just Everything Everything but in general movies geared towards YA have increasingly struggled at the box office. The 16 to 24 crowd just isn't coming out the movies in as large numbers, but they are the largest consumers of digital content.
The good news is Love, Simon is now officially the best performing YA movie in 4 years.

Is there proof of this? I'd imagine that crowd is going to see the comic book movies and other popular blockbusters. They probably just aren't interested in the teen films that Hollywood has been churning out.

$43M in per Boxofficemojo on a $17M budget (and it is still in theaters and still has DVD/cable/streaming to go). Not a blockbuster by any means, but it will have a reasonable ROI. Good for them.

Not nearly as good as CMBYN interestingly, but that is due to CMBYN's unbelievably (and I do doubt Wiki's data) low budget.

From Deadline
"With a staggered release pattern, Fox’s teen romance blossomed to $3.2M in five markets this session. The UK and Brazil had good openings, both at No. 4 with $1.6M and $808K, respectively. Holds from Australia (-23%) and New Zealand (-17%) were strong. The early international cume is $5.4M with 10 more markets releasing in Latin America next weekend."

Yes, R100 saw that it finally crossed the 42.5 mark when adding the international numbers. <3 It's currently at 37.5mil in the US. I think it will safely net 40mil by the end of its run domestically. A success through and through.

R119, I am Asian and I have watched this movie 3 times in the theatre. I know an Asian international student who is gay as well has watched 5 times. I believe this film gonna have a good performance in Asian market of the govs don't ban it opening there. Countries like china , Malaysia , Singapore , Indonesia might ban this movie , however the movie still can do well in Taiwan , Korea , Hongkong and Japan . Omg , I love this movie so much .
by Anonymous | reply 122 | April 9, 2018 7:15 AM |
The main Euro markets apart from UK will release it at the of June (Germany, France, Spain) with Italy waiting until the end of August.
No official release date for Asian yet.
R122 Singapore let it out with a restriction to over 21 years old. I suppose it may not get many theaters willing to show it though
by Anonymous | reply 123 | April 9, 2018 7:48 AM |
4 May 2018 is the release date for Taiwan, Singapore and Vietnam
9 May for Philippines
10 May 2018 for Hong Kong
11 May for Cambodia
Japan is not listed on imdb.
China may ban it as R122 said. Call Me By Your Name was supposed to be shown at Beijing Film Festival this month but it was removed in March when it didn't go through the government scrutiny. Simon is more vanilla, they may not notice it.

by Anonymous | reply 125 | April 9, 2018 8:04 AM |
this has been an interesting discussion, because I think the success of the film in the country correlates with how liberal their laws are. So it overperforms in Canada, where gay marriage was legalized 13 years ago. I personally dislike the LGBTQ cinema shouting - it's just a teen flick. the end. i'd like to see it do well intl'y so it should be fine in Europe but in lots of Asia there may be a problem.
having said all this, i'm in the 16-24 crowd and i have not seen the movie
by Anonymous | reply 126 | April 9, 2018 9:26 AM |
R121 It will go beyond $40 million domestically and probably push around $45 million when all is said and done. It should be hovering around $40 million domestically by Thursday. This weekend it will drop from its wide release and likely only continue playing in the markets where it is doing the best (major cities). It will be a slow crawl going forward. CMBYN is still playing in 50 theaters and just limped past $18 million domestically this weekend.

Omg this thread is so boring now. Let's discuss Simon and Blue's first fuck. Do they experiment with flip flopping? Introduce a cute third from another school? Do their parents allow sleep overs or do they have to do it in the back seats of cars or?
by Anonymous | reply 128 | April 9, 2018 1:22 PM |
R128 I hope Simon was the bottom, taking the big black cock like a pro.
by Anonymous | reply 129 | April 9, 2018 3:04 PM |
While Simon would undoubtedly have been the bottom if he had hooked up with the landscaper seen at the beginning of the movie, he would likely be the top in a relationship with Blue.. I suppose they could be vers; but there was nothing to suggest Blue was a top. Then again, Simon seemed hungry for dick given how he kept jumping to conclusions about Blue’s identity. The book almost answers the question as Simon and Blue share some private time in Simon’s bedroom and Simon gets hard. A pending arrival home by Simon’s parents interrupted them, though.
I suspect there’s fan fiction of all variations that will address the subject for you, R128 and R129.
by Anonymous | reply 130 | April 9, 2018 7:41 PM |
R130, Simon is definitely a thirsty bottom, no matter who he’s with.

How far does male-male intimacy go in the film? I assume there's at least a kiss between Simon and another boy, but how long does it last and how hot is it?
by Anonymous | reply 132 | April 9, 2018 7:46 PM |
It isn't "hot" r132. This is a "family-friendly" film.
There is a kiss at the end between Simon and Blue, no tongue.
by Anonymous | reply 133 | April 9, 2018 7:51 PM |
R132 There are two male-male kisses and one almost male-male kiss. The two kisses are tender kisses not tonsil hockey. In one scene Simon fantasizes about kissing a classmate under mistletoe at Christmas eve dinner but he is snapped back to reality before they can kiss.
by Anonymous | reply 134 | April 9, 2018 7:53 PM |
The initimacy in the film is limited to a few kisses at the very end, with Simon being the aggressor/initiator. The film is PG-13 in the US. Apart from a single “fuck” and a couple of other profanities, the film could have been rated PG. I suppose the teen drinking and the Grindr joke may have kept it from being PG.
by Anonymous | reply 135 | April 9, 2018 7:55 PM |
R131 Simon's cute little butt was made for taking it hard.
R130 The novel has a bit more of sexual edge than the film. The novel has Simon getting hard with blue and he also jerks off reading an email from Blue.

by Anonymous | reply 142 | April 9, 2018 8:31 PM |
Saw it yesterday. Cried like a bitoch in several places.
Solid film, but very important.
The scene where Simon is having a fantasy, and the kiss gets cut off reminded me:
Sometime around 1995, Melrose Place was going to have the first gay kiss. The gay character, who's name escapes me, was little seen on the show, not given much to do. The kiss was touted for weeks before it happened.
My friend had a group of his gay friends to his place in Benedict Canyon. Big screen TV, the works. Unbeknownst to us, earlier in the day, Rupert Murdoch (and the order DID come from him) got cold feet, and ordered the kiss out. So the kiss is about to happen, and then gets quickly cut away. We didn't see it. The gays there made jokes about it, and we weren't too fazed, but remembering back, that is a pretty fucking painful moment.
So when Simon, in a Fox movie, finally gives a full on kiss to Blue, I cried me eyes out.
I know, MARY! But fuck, the shit I went through in grade school, and junior high because I wasn't like other boys. And the rest of my life. This movie carried weight, and I'm so glad its out there.
by Anonymous | reply 143 | April 9, 2018 8:43 PM |
My dumb friend just for spite said he didn’t want to watch this ‘kiddie’ movie.
by Anonymous | reply 144 | April 9, 2018 8:53 PM |
I have a friend who's shrink. And gay. He wouldn't see it with me. He said that he thought it would upset him too much that he "missed out" on that experience growing up. Same reason he declined to see CMBYN.
For a psychiatrist, I thought that was a very strange position to take. My life wasn't like either of these movies, but I enjoyed them nevertheless. I understand that many people have enjoyed "better" gay experiences than I. But, I mean, I've done cool things that weren't in these movies that I hold dear. Why would you begrudge anyone their experiences?

Yeah, that Simon and Blue were supposed in love with each other because they exchanged some nice emails seemed force.
I also thought it was cheesy we are supposed to believe it didn't even matter what Blue looked like. How about someone not attractive show up to say they are Blue, wouldn't have been the same happy ending!

R148 must not watch very many romantic comedy movies. They all have happy endings with a very rare exception or two. You must also have snoozed through the personal growth and bonding they experienced as a result of their emails. Both of them inspired the other to come out to people in their lives. Plus, they are both horny, impressionable, gay teens. It doesn't take much to fall in love at that age.

You miss my point. Could it have still had a happy ending if Blue wasn't conventionally attractive? If Blue wasn't good-looking, popular, masculine guy?
What if some overweight guy showed up and Simon was like "I loved you for you, not what you looked like" and they still had the big kiss? That would have been a ballsier ending. And maybe even an important statement against the shallowness of gay culture.

Despite the jokes above, Colton Haynes filmed some scenes for the movie which were cut. The scenes involved Nick taking Simon to a gay bar, much like in the book where Abby and Nick take Simon to a gay bar and a twenty something guy buys Simon drinks. Haynes obviously plays the guy befriending Simon. Expect the scenes to make an appearance on the blu ray extras.

It did happen in the book; although several things in the book were cut from the movie, such as Simon’s older sister, Alice. He has two sisters in the book but only one in the film. Every other chapter in the book is nothing but emails between Simon and Blue. Obviously, many of them were cut from the film as well.

I saw it today. It's a lovely film and very charming. I only have two main criticisms: the first has already been mentioned, the fact that Simon's life is so obscenely perfect that it's difficult to have much sympathy for him. The second is that the email exchanges between Blue and Simon aren't in any way special. You never get the sense that this amazing connection is there and that they're really hitting it off in a personal way. So when Simon declares his love for Blue and says he's so funny and always knows the right words to say, etc, it seems like a huge jump from what we see in the email exchanges to that. And so the climax doesn't really have as much power as it could have. It's beautiful, though.
And what a slut Simon is. Not only does he fall in love with someone he's exchanged a few emails with, but also seems to fall in love with each boy he initially believes is Blue, which is about four different boys. She's a whore, darlin'.
by Anonymous | reply 191 | April 12, 2018 8:32 PM |

by Anonymous | reply 192 | April 12, 2018 8:34 PM |
Also, does anyone else feel that the bit where Blue turns up and they go up in the ferris wheel is too brief? It felt kind of rushed. The whole film has been building up to that moment, so they could have held it a little longer.
by Anonymous | reply 193 | April 12, 2018 8:36 PM |
r192 Yeah, I guess so.
Another slight flaw is that Simon's family aren't really proper characters, are they? It's like in the script it just says "liberals" and that's it. That's kind of the extent of their personalities. There's nothing unique about them. They even high five each other at one point in the film.

by Anonymous | reply 196 | April 12, 2018 10:39 PM |
r195 True, but I'm not asking for fully-fledged characters, just something approaching a personality. There's literally nothing there. And they are a fairly major part of the film later on, emotionally at least. That speech by Jennifer Garner about exhaling is nicely written but because there's no real personality there you can't shake the feeling it's the screenwriter talking to the audience.
by Anonymous | reply 197 | April 12, 2018 10:55 PM |
You are expecting too much depth out of what is ultimately a fairly shallow crowd-pleasing movie r197.
by Anonymous | reply 198 | April 12, 2018 11:07 PM |
r198 But it's not about shallowness or depth, it's about good writing and poor writing.
by Anonymous | reply 199 | April 12, 2018 11:09 PM |
They are one and the same. Good writing means richer characterization. Movies that play more broadly keep characters more like cardboard cutouts. Watch any made for TV movie lol. I mean the lead character in this movie, Simon, is still written very broadly, he doesn't even have a lot of real characterization, much less the parents.
by Anonymous | reply 200 | April 12, 2018 11:15 PM |
The adults are written to match how adolescents view them. This is especially so with the parents. The film is about Simon and his world.
It takes a special adult to cut through the noise and make a difference at 17. That person was the drama teacher.
by Anonymous | reply 201 | April 13, 2018 1:25 AM |
It felt real to me because my mother was like that, too. I saw it again last night along with [italic]Grease[/italic] and the outing of Simon made me violently angry at every non-gay character in the movie. I cheered as loudly at the end as I could get away with in public. And this morning, I woke up with "Someday at Christmas" in an empty bed and cried. Except when all men are free, it will be Hanukkah.
I'm 34 and came out at 15. I never had a high school sweetheart, and I still regret that. I cry because gay teens today get the kind of support we didn't get. I'm happy and sad at the same time. I am happy for gay people of all ages who find true love, and sad for myself because I wonder how many times I will have to meet the wrong men before I meet the right man.
It takes a special adult to cut through the noise and make a difference at 17. That person was the drama teacher.
Agreed. Give her a Best Supporting Actress Oscar Nomination.

Girls in my theater loudly cheered and SQUEALED when the kiss came.
by Anonymous | reply 204 | April 13, 2018 9:36 AM |
[SPOILERS] The final kiss in the car is so brief. I realize they're both in front of friends and so they may be embarrassed but you don't really get the sense they're seeing each other in the morning and really want to kiss properly but are holding back. It's just a quick peck on the lips and that's it. One moment I thought was particularly moving is when Blue asks Simon if he's disappointed that it's him and he says no and they kiss. The way Blue asks him is really moving. I feel like if they made that moment in the car a bit more emotional, then it would kind of underline the fact that Simon is really pleased that Blue turned out to be the dude what he turned out to be.
by Anonymous | reply 205 | April 13, 2018 1:31 PM |
The moment in the car was designed to show how normal it was. An every day thing. They've been getting in the car together for weeks, that wasn't the first time. It was showing how life goes on, how it changed, and how it didn't. It wasn't a hugely emotional moment because of course it wasn't.
I still think the scenes with the mother and with the father were the emotional core of the movie. Those scenes hit me hard and have stayed with me. Moving, emotional, and educational all at the same time. And cathartic to watch, as he got the support and understanding that I never did in that same situation (even though my parents are "supportive", it's more of an out-of-sight, out-of-mind way than actually TALKING about it like that).
by Anonymous | reply 206 | April 13, 2018 1:43 PM |
And what a slut Simon is. Not only does he fall in love with someone he's exchanged a few emails with, but also seems to fall in love with each boy he initially believes is Blue, which is about four different boys. She's a whore, darlin'.
He's not a whore, he's a hopeless romantic. At that age, that's kind of sweet. After 30, it becomes pathetic.
by Anonymous | reply 207 | April 13, 2018 1:53 PM |
He will have that wide-eyed romanticism and optimism beat out of him quickly enough. Rom coms always end at the "get together" stage, before the pain and heart break stage.
They've been getting in the car together for weeks, that wasn't the first time.
So after only a few weeks their first kiss in the morning is already a blink-and-you'll-miss-it, everyday affair? How brief love is. :(
It's a romantic film. They should leave you with the impression of love und romance, not bland normality.
by Anonymous | reply 209 | April 13, 2018 10:30 PM |
Also, the fantasy musical scene is really square, isn't it? Did anyone else think it's done that way because Simon is kind of like that? It would have been much funnier if he really queens out and the whole dance is really gay. Then when he says "Okay, maybe not that gay" it would get a bigger laugh. As it is, the scene isn't gay at all, apart from the rainbow flag outside.
by Anonymous | reply 210 | April 13, 2018 10:34 PM |
It has a wonderful soundtrack. Quite a few 60s songs on there. Probably hits on the wireless back when Greg Berlanti was Simon's age.

I have to say, the final shot of the film where they crane up as the car drives off and we're left with the city in the background. Presumably their destination, like the big wide world awaits them. In the fantasy world, of course the big exciting city, full of life and promise is a great thing to look forward to, but in the real world it just portends heartbreak, loneliness, despair and suicide. I was thinking "NO! Don't drive off into the world. Stay here and love each other in your bedrooms and don't ever meet any other men, EVAH!!!"

by Anonymous | reply 217 | April 13, 2018 11:12 PM |
I guess that scene was cut from the wide release, r217. There’s a scene from when this film was in previews where Simon and the gardener connect on Grindr and then 69 in his bedroom. Like you suggest, there’s also some foot play involved.

r220 The idea that a romantic film should end on a note of routine is kind of weird. They've only been together a short while, so the spark should still be there. Why not show that?
by Anonymous | reply 222 | April 14, 2018 10:33 AM |
Jennifer Garner apparently requested that her big scene be added to the script. I don't know if I should read that as an actress wanted to make sure she got appropriate screen time or just feeling that her character would need to make that kind of declaration to Simon. I'm choosing the more charitable explanation, because it apparently made a lot of the crew cry when they filmed it.
The real thing that's stuck with me is that the most painful part was that Martin took away Simon's control of his own story. I wasn't outed, not really, but his whole "I'm supposed to be the one who decides..." was a real gut-punch.

R235 I think his character is meant to be a social misfit so they have to make him look odd. This hair style is still better than the lanky long hair in Everything, Everything. He did look best styled as Simon, which probably helped sell tickets to teen girls.

They could have made this film so much more relevant if they had Blue turn out to be Leah and she comes out as trans and at the end she gets into the car and has transitioned to a hot man who gives Simon a frenchie then takes his boots off and lets Simon have a quick sniff of his pungent feets.

by Anonymous | reply 246 | April 14, 2018 10:05 PM |
The sequel could have Simon moving to the city, breaking up with Blue and trawling through Grindr. He hits it off with someone but they won't send him any face pics, just endless photos of an averaged sized freakishly curved penis. But Simon is sure this is the one because he says such amazing things like "Yo, what u wearin?" and "I want to fuk u like a ragdoll!", so he perseveres and tells his paramour, who he calls Brown, to meet him at the local bathhouse at 2am or it's OVAH! I won't spoil the ending, suffice to say there won't be a dry hand in the house!

Today Interview with the Vampire would have been made into a love affair between a man and a woman, and the 90s version was already degayed enough.

There was indeed a gay scene between Lois and Armand that was cut from the film, and there was a kiss between Louis and another man (Tom Cruise's character ?) that was cut as well. Too bad we never saw it. Brad, Tom, and Antonio were at their beauty peak. *cries*
though the scene from Armand and Brad left on the film was still hot.

$39 million on a $17 budget is horrible. John Krasinski's Don't Make a Noise also cost $17 million but has made over $100 in a week. Tyler Posey's Truth or Dare only cost $3 million and opened to over 6 times it's budget at $19 million.

Looking at recent films "The Disaster Artist" and "Ladybird" were both 10 mil. "Love Simon" you'd think would be the same.
Wonder if Greg Berlanti struggled with directing a motion picture since he is so used to television, might have caused some budget inflation beyond what the studio wanted.
by Anonymous | reply 298 | April 15, 2018 9:38 PM |
I'm also struggling with the 17 million dollar budget. The film looked great so money well spent.
Did anyone one else think of Mean Girls after watching this? They have little in common besides being HS movies, but I left feeling the same about both. I loved the worlds these movies created and enjoyed following the characters through most of a school year (Summer, Fall, ending in Spring). Maybe it's because I liked almost everyone in the film minus the theater jerks and his little sister.

by Anonymous | reply 300 | April 15, 2018 10:11 PM |
The $17 million production budget is an estimate by several film commentators. Studios don't typically release the actual production costs but to me $17 million sounds right on the money for a lower budget studio film. Studios pour more money into their films than independent films like the ones R298 mentions. Studio films are made mostly to earn profit so studios and their investors will dump a larger amount of money hoping for a large rate of return. Studio films involve large crews, state of the art equipment, higher salaries etc. Independent films are mostly made for artistic reasons and are funded by small investors and grants & made on tight budgets. The goal of most independent film producers to have their film purchased by a distributor.
It's not at all a stretch that Love, Simon cost around $17 million.

R299 it has been compared to lots of other teen films, but it was no where near as funny as Mean Girls. It really had no funny parts at all, to be honest.
R296 Shawn Mendes has mentioned wanting the starring role. I don't know if he's serious or it was ever even a possibility, but I think that would have drawn it more fans. I guess he's not out, though, but still.

I got to ride a Ferris Wheel with a guy once. But I had to pay him to do it. (Worth every penny. He was deeply attentive.)
So this movie is a success in that it was made and it's given the gay boys out there of all ages a fantasy.

Is the identity of Blue withheld til the end in the book, as well? I think that's a major flaw in the film's plot. They turn it into a mystery, which provides a thrill at the end, but it comes at the expense of things which are much more fundamental to a film like this. Compare it to films like SHOP AROUND THE CORNER (or YOU'VE GOT MAIL), where the two main characters fall in love with a person they're communicating with but don't think they know; and as the film progresses the audience sees them falling in love with each other in real time without them realizing that they and the person they're communicating with are one and the same. This is a much richer experience, because we see the mutual love developing and by the time they hook up at the end we're convinced of it. Although the surprise at the end when we find out who Blue is is a lovely and moving one, I just don't think enough has been shown throughout the film for it to have much impact beyond that.
I think it would have been much better if they focused on Simon for the first half and then revealed to the audience who Blue was in the second act. Then shown us that Simon and Blue really liked each other, and only then at the end do they find out who Jacques and Blue really are. You don't get that surprise at the end, but you get a much richer payoff.
Is the identity of Blue withheld til the end in the book, as well?
Yes. In fact, Cal, Miles Heizer's character, is a much more plausible candidate than Bram, until Simon asks him a bunch of questions that only Blue would know the answer to, and he doesn't know them.
However, we do find out he is bisexual and has feelings for Simon.
However, we do find out he is bisexual and has feelings for Simon.
Oh, I wish they'd included that in the film. I thought Heizer was great and that almost kiss between him and Simon was beautiful. There seemed to be real chemistry between them. And the scene where Simon asks him outright if he's Blue was really moving. Thanks, r310 x
by Anonymous | reply 311 | April 16, 2018 1:03 PM |
I felt they planted the seed. While the other two Blue candidates Simon finds out aren't gay, at least supposedly, Miles character seemed presented as if he actually was gay also and he seems really sympathetic to Simon and genuinely wants to hang out and get to know him better.

by Anonymous | reply 313 | April 16, 2018 1:12 PM |
I would have been happy if Blue had turned out to be any of the candidates. They were all lovely, in different ways. One of my favorite bits in the film is when Joey Pollari introduces himself to Simon and Greg holds the shot on Simon just gazing at him...
by Anonymous | reply 314 | April 16, 2018 1:17 PM |
R314, that moment and many others from the film highlight the terrific performance from Robinson in the role of Simon. His nervousness while waiting for Blue’s first email was another standout moment.
Some gays are upset a straight actor was cast as Simon but Robinson fully committed to the part. He is in every scene in the movie apart from the coming out as straight scenes so the film is dependent on his performance. He sells the film with the perfect combination of relatability, charm, vulnerability, emotion and realism.
by Anonymous | reply 315 | April 16, 2018 2:14 PM |
R315 Having seen the film twice, Robinson gives an incredibly subtle performance throughout most of the film. He manages to communicate much of Simon's inner turmoil through facial expressions and body language but in a very understated manner. It's one of those performances that actually gets better the more times you see the film.

In that opening sequence, I love the way he leaves his house and then goes into a really hurried walk, chest pushed out, as he psyches himself up to say something to the gardener.

That first scene of him yelling out to the gardener is totally out of character for Simon, Simon would not do that.

r320 I never got a very clear sense of a character with Simon. I'm honestly not sure whether it's in character or out of character, but it is very funny and the way he performs it physically is very good.
by Anonymous | reply 321 | April 16, 2018 7:39 PM |
Simon approaching the gardener is very in character for him. He approached Bram, Lyle and Cal when he thought all of them were Blue. Simon initiates contact with people he is attracted to just like he did when he leaned in for the kiss on the Ferris wheel.

R309 - there were some pretty big clues thrown out there about Blue’s identity. The biggest when Bram says at lunch I’m half black and half Jewish so black and blue. I laughed at that - my biracial cousins say the same thing.
by Anonymous | reply 323 | April 16, 2018 9:51 PM |
there were some pretty big clues thrown out there about Blue’s identity.
True but didn't some of those clues also coincide with the other candidates, too? Like Cal going away with his father, I think; and Lyle going outside the waffle house and checking his phone just as Simon got another message from Blue, etc.

[spoilers] It just would have been so much better if they dispensed with the Blue mystery, which takes up a good third of the film, and focused on developing the relationship between Simon and Bram. Still have the reveal for Simon at the end, but tell the audience long before that who Blue is, so that we can concentrate on their developing relationship.

I wonder if Blue realized who Jacques was early in the plot. The way he looks at Simon in some of the scenes early on could just be because he likes him, but it could also be read as him either knowing Simon is Jacques or having some suspicion. This is one of the weaknesses in the way the film is plotted: we don't really get to know Blue other than through what he says in the emails.

Love, Simon made *slightly* more at the box office this weekend than the original projections. It brought in $1,060,295 bringing it's total domestic box office to $39,329,296. With foreign box office the film is now at $49.5 million.
by Anonymous | reply 332 | April 17, 2018 12:48 PM |
There were numerous scenes that captured what you describe, r331, including a montage of the characters stroking off to the thought one another. For whatever reason, it didn't appear in the main release and that's much to the detriment of the story's cohesion.

Something interesting about Nick Robinson and his initial reluctance to do the "Love, Simon" role. It turns out that the decision to take it was probably good for his career.
Here is a listing of the 2018 films he is currently appearing in, and the corresponding RottenTomatoes ratings:
Love, Simon - 92%
Krystal - 0% (That's ZERO percent.)

This new review in British GQ shows an appreciation for what Nick Robinson accomplished in the film--
Simon’s facial expressions most affected me. With a few well-placed glances - a furtive look at the buff next door neighbour on the way to school, a pained expression at his dad’s ill-judged sex jokes, a brow sorrowfully furrowed at the burden of his secret – Robinson adeptly manages to capture the anxiety of being a gay teenager with even more dexterity, dare I say it, than Timothée Chalamet in 2017’s Call Me By Your Name.
by Anonymous | reply 335 | April 18, 2018 10:48 PM |
To even compare Robinson's work in this film to Chalamet's work in CMBYM is laughable and silly. And that is all that needs to be said.

R339 It should just squeak past $40 million domestically this weekend and that's about it. I don't think there is much more in and will end its domestic run hovering below the $41 million mark.
Foreign box office is at $11 million. Overall we're at $50.6 million and we've still got a lot of international markets to go.

I don't even have a good feel for what percentage of a films income is attributed to rentals, DVDs, streaming, etc... everything post boxoffice release.

by Anonymous | reply 347 | April 20, 2018 4:46 AM |
Yeah, box office numbers are easy to find. It's very hard to find out how much a movie makes in DVD, Blu-ray, and video streaming sales.
At link is a site the tries to recap the Worldwide Box Office plus DVD & Blu-ray sales. I don't think they are including video streaming revenue but I'm not actually sure. At the very least, it's not separately stated in their estimates.
So for example, Nick Robinson's previous YA movie was "Everything, Everything" in 2017.
Domestic Box Office - 34 million
International - 27 million
Worldwide - 61 million
Est. Domestic DVD sales 1.8 million
Est. Domestic Blu-ray 1 million.
(No info on foreign DVD sales or any video streaming.)
What you can get from this is that unlike years and years ago where DVD sales could be about 1/2 the revenue of a movie, it's doesn't appear to be like that anymore. I'm not sure if video streaming sales make up for the DVD sales loss in any significant way. Just don't know.

Nobody BUYS DVDs anymore. They rent them (RedBox), or they just do digital rentals (Apple TV or Amazon or Windows 10's "Moveis & TV" or whatever...)
Or they wait for it to be on cable.
Or they wait even longer for it to be on broadcast TV.

Beach Rats is just the second act of a typical coming out film. The film starts when the main character has already started messing around with guys and it ends before he comes to terms with the fact he's gay. It's just the second act with the beginning and end removed, which makes it seem unconventional in structure but very unsatisfying at the same time. And the main character was a coward and a twat.

Love, Simon is a light-hearted, mainstream romantic comedy that tells a sweet story with likeable characters. R413 No she's not. She's stated on Twitter several times that Leah on the Offbeat is the final book in the "Simonverse." This is third book in what has described as a trilogy.

by Anonymous | reply 415 | April 26, 2018 6:21 PM |
R415 The three books are: Simon vs. the Homo Sapiens Agenda (adapted into Love, Simon), The Upside of Unrequited (which focuses on Abby's cousin and features a cameo by Simon) and Leah on the Offbeat.
by Anonymous | reply 416 | April 26, 2018 6:25 PM |
Simon being the only one that stars a male (technically anyway...) protagonist.
The unrequited book stars a chubby girl falling in love with a dorky guy from my understanding, showcases a love story that isn't about the pretty people.
by Anonymous | reply 417 | April 26, 2018 6:32 PM |
R417 (SPOILER) Well, in Unrequited, there was a "hot guy" Will who was showing some sort of "interest" in the chubby girl until suddenly he wasn't. Turned out he was himself crushing unrequitedly on his Korean lesbian bff who was dating the chubby girl's lesbian sister. Andthe sisters' parents were two lesbians, too! Yeah, that pretty much tells you how this author operates.

Langford's popularity from 13 Reasons Why isn't enough for a sequel. It comes down to the box office numbers for Love, Simon which aren't really that great. As previous posters said movies based on YA books haven't been box office hits in the past couple of years.

R443 you're right, it will, but I was really hoping that the numbers would be so stellar that there wouldn't be any hesitation at all by large studios in making similar movies.
On a side note/rant I'm a little disappointed when I hear people complain it's a another movie about a "hetero-normative cis white male" and so they're not gonna see it until they get represented. As a POC myself I understand the sentiment. But I don't think that they understand that if LS doesn't do well then any movie less "mainstream" than LS won't even be considered (not counting indie studios).
From the time that they released Catwoman (admittedly a horrible movie) and the last blade movie it took them 14 years! before they attempted to try again with Wonder woman and Black Panther.
I think that we get one more chance through streaming video and disc sales. If those numbers aren't much better then I fear we're in for another 14 year wait for a non-tragic, gay, YA, movie.

Do you think this film will still be appreciated in, say, 20 years time? A lot of the promotion and appreciation of the film seems to be about the fact that it's a mainstream, family film, and on that score it's absolutely commendable and worth celebrating, but in the future (hopefully) that element won't be so noteworthy and so audiences will judge it purely on its merits as a film. I think it's a very good film and definitely charming, sweet and well acted, but I wonder if it will stand the test of time.

R450 "Being Charlie" has three male stand-ins listed in the credits. I don't have absolute proof but I am convinced the ass in that movie belongs to one of those guys and not Nick. There was nothing in it that required a stand-in other than nudity. They also had a female stand-in to handle nudity for the lead gal in the film too.
by Anonymous | reply 471 | May 12, 2018 3:50 AM |
R471, then why were there three stand-ins? I think this is a conspiracy theory. Somebody needs to Tweet Nick and ask him if that was really his ass.

R472, A stunt person would needed in the scene where Charlie gets pushed out of moving car and possibly the breaking a church's stained-glass window. The female lead definitely did nothing resembling a stunt and she was in about half of the film. The only thing they have in common are the nude scenes which leads me to believe that is what two of the four stand-ins were used for and the remainder guys did stunts in place of Nick.

by Anonymous | reply 485 | May 29, 2018 5:51 PM |
When is the gay bar scene supposed to happen? At the end where his friends have forgiven him? Isn't that because of the blog comment that leads to the ferris scene? Seems a bit weird to make a stop at a gay bar before you want to meet Blue.

r492 All of that is mere dressing to the story, which itself is neither original or particularly noteworthy. And is in absolutely no way "high brow". Most of CMBYN's fans are teenage girls. A middle-aged academic will get nothing more from the film than those teenagers, precisely because the elements you see as sophisticated are just adornments. If you want high brow cinema (which isn't necessarily a good thing, of course), watch Antonioni or Bela Tarr or Apichatpong Weerasethakul, etc.
by Anonymous | reply 493 | May 29, 2018 7:38 PM |
Listing things you think are higher brow hardly makes CMBYN a John Hughes production.
by Anonymous | reply 494 | May 29, 2018 7:47 PM |
r494 I'm not saying CMBYN is shit, but the fact that a character plays a piano and a bit of Montaigne is thrown into the script doesn't make the film high brow.
by Anonymous | reply 495 | May 29, 2018 7:52 PM |
R482 and R484, there is a chapter in the book where Abby and Nick take Simon to a gay bar, which is why it was filmed. The book and the movie scenes are similar, apart from Abby not making the trip in the movie.
The scene in the film takes place shortly after Simon is outed on Christmas Eve but before Abby and Nick start dating on New Year’s Eve.
Simon’s joy and dancing while at the bar make it a fun scene. Colton doesn’t really add anything to the scene, although it was humorous to hear the deep voice he used for his lines.
by Anonymous | reply 496 | May 29, 2018 8:03 PM |
He hardly just "plays the piano". It's not Redford dropping Pachabel in Ordinary People.

Love, Simon is a good middle of the road gay movie. It doesn't devolve into cringe-worthy gay teen sex comedy, nor does it aspire to say anything deep about gay love. It's just a story about one kid and his experience in coming out and searching for love.

Maybe on your 6th viewing you can appreciate the performance of the blackmailer, Martin, played by Logan Miller. I had read some reviews where they crap all over his performance, but he had the toughest job since he was disliked by the others even before he blackmailed Simon, and he never gets to look good or cool like the other characters.
I loved it when he ran around the football field dressed as a bear mascot, then surprised still-closeted Simon by saying, "I heard you were into bears."
People have complained that the Ferris wheel scene at the end was cringe-inducing, but it's clear that the writers were trying to reduce the cringe by having Martin pretend he was someone else to Simon because he felt bad Simon was riding all alone on the Ferris wheel. The writers were trying to redeem the character a bit, but they also provided some comic relief when it was needed, before the big kiss.
by Anonymous | reply 511 | June 2, 2018 5:55 PM |
I liked Martin. He was more of a comic relief character than an actual villain. And all of his actions basically pushed the story forward for the sake of the movie (not that Simon did appreciate that Martin took it upon himself to out Simon and not let Simon come out on his own terms).
by Anonymous | reply 512 | June 2, 2018 6:08 PM |
Armond White singled out the actor who plays Martin, as the best thing about the film.
by Anonymous | reply 513 | June 2, 2018 6:14 PM |
In one of the digital extras, there is an outtake where Logan Miller improved a truly hysterical line about square dancing when the group arrived at the Halloween party. It was a much better line than the bartender line that was used in the film. Miller had a tough job in the film but he was great. Robinson was still leagues better but Miller was certainly good.
by Anonymous | reply 514 | June 2, 2018 6:20 PM |
r513 That sounds like exactly the sort of thing Armond White would say.
I liked that actor but I'm pretty sure you would be facing at least expulsion, if not outright criminal charges for blackmailing someone like that. To say nothing of the forced outing via doxing at the very end. That's inexcusable and can't possibly be redeemed by any other kind gesture.

Maybe the next mainstream gay teen movie can be about a gay person who isn't a bland, upper-middle class white person surrounded by a loving family and friends who would provide no consequences for being true to themselves. Who might actually have the guts to come out knowing they would face some hardship in their life. Maybe they wouldn't be "blackmailed" by a loathsome student and wind up being a total dick to their friends. Perhaps they could also meet someone in real life and not have it be some anonymous figure who, surprise, is one of their hot best friends.
Christ, the praise being dumped on this seriously mediocre film is ridiculous.

by Anonymous | reply 520 | June 2, 2018 8:47 PM |
Gawd, this was a disappointment. Admittedly, I watched it recalling only the media's initial infatuation with it, though I'd never actually read any of the reviews. Started off well enough with a handsome lead and a serious "Nancy Meyers"-inspired aspirational lifestyle, erm, foreground. But this was seriously derailed by the blackmail development. How could they take an initially likeable actor, Nick Robinson (not so much playing a character as a model in a lifestyle photo story), and make him completely unlikable by not only being weak and willing to submit to blackmail but also treat his friends like pawns he was wililng to re-arrange and subvert to meet his own, what, vain needs? What a turn-off. This development also moved a very unlikable supporting character to the centre of the film and allowed him to dictate all of the action for the entire second act. Honestly, I struggle to understand who is making these movies - what were they trying to accomplish? The film is entirely derailed shortly after the 20 minute mark and never even comes close to recovering. Being a teenager is dramatic enough; coming out - as whomever you are - and avoiding conformity is even more dramatic and challenging. Why these filmmakers thought they had to do something so "extra" plot-wise, just robbed them of the opportunity to do any justice to the process of coming out at all.
I would advise giving his a HARD PASS. It is a deeply disappointing mess of a teenage movie. For teen films I would recommend The Edge of Seventeen and Easy A, both of which stand up to repeated viewings and are genuinely subversive additions to the genre.

To each his own. FYI, coming out has a different impact on each person. It can be incredibly hard for some. Why do you think gay people kill themselves or others just to keep their sexual orientation a secret? I find Simon very likable and would date him in a heartbeat if we were the same age.
People have complained that the Ferris wheel scene at the end was cringe-inducing, but it's clear that the writers were trying to reduce the cringe by having Martin pretend he was someone else to Simon because he felt bad Simon was riding all alone on the Ferris wheel.
I thought the ending was too much like Drew Barrymore’s “Never Been Kissed”.

I thought the parents in the movie made his coming out all about themselves, especially the father. I got the sense they were both so wrapped up in themselves they didn't even know Simon very well. And what parents are okay with a female friend sleeping over with their supposedly heterosexual son?
by Anonymous | reply 532 | June 4, 2018 3:11 PM |
I think the first one third of the movie is terrible. But after that, it picks up. It was McFlurry sweet and funny overall.

I was okay with the first 20 minutes and then it was over for me. Never recovered it's superficial, slick charm. It became a "feel bad" movie about a weak gay teen submitting to blackmail without any faith in the love of his family and friends in what was depicted as a completely non-threatening environment. I mean, a high school that puts on Cabaret (which was a funny joke) seems pretty tolerant to me. When he started treating his friends like pawns... it was sick making. Can't imagine what any self-respecting person would see in this film.

R543 is correct. The whole blackmail scenario, and how quickly Simon turned on his "friends," was bullshit.
by Anonymous | reply 549 | June 8, 2018 7:52 PM |
In the book, the blackmail occurs in the very first chapter. In the movie, it doesn't happen until almost the 30 minute mark. And Simon only told two deliberate lies. He told Nick at the party that Abby had a boyfriend and he later told Nick in the cafeteria that Abby liked Martin. That second one is almost excusable given how Simon was so oblivious to hetero romance. He could have easily thought Abby liked Martin after their conversation in the car.
As for Simon telling Nick that Leah was into him, he actually thought that was true so it's tough to call that a lie. In his email to Blue on the night Leah slept over, he told Blue one of his (female) friends liked one of his (male) friends and the guy had no idea. He did not intend to deceive Nick in that case. Putting Martin in Abby's orbit and letting them interact is not turning on his friends, either.
Some people just want to dislike this film despite its overwhelmingly beneficial impact on gay society, especially gay youth. Sometimes hating the film requires the person to concoct some bullshit which is detached from reality.
by Anonymous | reply 550 | June 9, 2018 5:26 AM |
Historically gay men were thought to be unfit for public service because they were susceptible to blackmail. They were thought to be security risks. It’s an ugly trope.
This film would’ve been interesting and enjoyable enough if it was just about Simon coming out, picking his moment, starting a romance, coming to terms with himself and sharing that with others. The whole blackmail thing was ugly. No one should ever submit to blackmail. When Martin said it to him, Simon should’ve come out immediately. Instead he gave away his considerable power, for no reason at all. He wasn’t under any real threat. It’s alarrming that people here think blackmail and deception are acceptable behaviours. They’re not.
by Anonymous | reply 551 | June 9, 2018 6:47 AM |
Movies need drama and conflict in order for the happy ending to be satisfactory. I mean, do we really discuss the lack of value and merit of drama that comes with a fictional character getting blackmailed on Datalounge? I mean I could understand trolling but this is some SJW trolling that's on the same level as1 Million Moms shrieking (OMG, blackmail! Betrayal! How offensive! How uncouth!).
by Anonymous | reply 552 | June 9, 2018 9:47 AM |
It doesn't even work dramatically because what does Simon actually have to lose? Nothing. There's no reason for him to submit to blackmail. Chances are, most of his friends probably suspect it's a possibility he could be gay anyway. The awkwardness of being a teenager is drama enough, made unique by being a gay teenager.
I'm afraid, R552, your values are seriously misplaced. What value does the so-called dramatic conflict actually have if you're shrugging it off as some requisite component anyway? It certainly wasn't compelling or weighty in its own right.
by Anonymous | reply 553 | June 9, 2018 5:41 PM |
Can you SJW go write your own books? Nobody cares that you're triggered by blackmail as a plot device.
by Anonymous | reply 554 | June 9, 2018 6:03 PM |
How could anyone watch this movie and not realize Simon is afraid of introducing change into his life and is afraid of losing Blue? Those dual fears allowed Martin's blackmail to take root. Every step Simon takes on his own related to his coming out process is due either to an email conversation with Blue or because he has no choice due to Martin's actions.
by Anonymous | reply 555 | June 9, 2018 6:33 PM |
Simon directly says more than his fear of being outed, he was terrified that it would scare away Blue and he would never meet him. I don't get how you could miss that.
by Anonymous | reply 556 | June 9, 2018 6:35 PM |
r556, trolls deliberately ignore that to troll and get under other posters' skin.
by Anonymous | reply 557 | June 9, 2018 6:44 PM |
The blackmail device is fine and introduces drama into a scenario that would otherwise lack any. I think the film is lovely. My only gripe is that I think the story's structure would have been improved had Blue's identity been revealed to the audience at the end of the second act and then they could have shown Simon and Bram getting closer before they discover who Jacques and Blue actually are.
by Anonymous | reply 558 | June 9, 2018 9:32 PM |
Why blackmail? They could've had more drama with a murder or kidnapping or a suicide to really drive home the point of teen suidicdes, especially gay trans women of color.

My copy came in the mail today and I watched it for the first time. I thought it was a really good movie. PG-13 movies are pretty limited with content and I think they did a good job. Nick was very believable. When I was in high school it was a time and place when coming out was not an option. I was not effeminate and pretty much stuck to the computer lab so I didn't have any problems. There were zero out gays in my HS in spite of it being almost 3000 students.
by Anonymous | reply 564 | June 16, 2018 6:05 AM |
I liked the movie but feel kinda dumb I didn’t understand what motivated Simon was the fear of losing Blue. I’m reading the book right now after reading the emails I don’t get the sense that Blue is so afraid of being found out.
by Anonymous | reply 565 | June 16, 2018 7:43 AM |
Simon wants to meet Blue at some point and Blue says he is not comfortable to reveal his identity yet. That's what causes the fear in Simon of losing Blue if Martin follows up on his threat (to out Simon and his email correspondence with Blue).

I'd say Alex Strangelove is three stars, Love, Simon is three and a half.
The former, while definitely a solid R-rating, has no more gay content than Love, Simon, but plenty of hetero.

Wow just Blu-rayed it. Very disappointing. Tony Hale was awful and kept it from being a good movie. The wrong guy was Blue too. Wanted to love it, barely liked it. On the extras they actually cut out the two best scenes.

Those scenes were in the screening a saw in Los Angeles, r573. They are sorely missed in the general release.
by Anonymous | reply 574 | June 17, 2018 1:04 AM |
That first deleted scene between Simon and Abby needed to be cut. It is nothing more than Simon being unnecessarily mean towards Nick. It served no purpose. The second deleted scene, which is really three scenes all of which are fine, aren't needed to advance the story in the rest of the film. The pre-bar scene and the bar scene highlight the friendship between Simon and Nick; but the film plays better with the distance between them in the final cut, although it was nice to see Simon actually enjoying being gay while at the bar. The post-bar scene when Simon arrives home from the bar has no context once the preceding scene is cut.
by Anonymous | reply 575 | June 17, 2018 1:50 AM |
They should have left in the full frontal scene. I’m ok that Nick Robinson isn’t as hung as we had thought.

And they could have placed that right before the play and everyone would have believed Nick told the girls about it and forgave him and they decided to ask Simon to the carnival. Those scenes were literally the best they filmed including the Mother telling him off.
by Anonymous | reply 577 | June 17, 2018 2:29 PM |
I agree, r576 and 575. The full-frontal and j/o scenes are integral to the plot, and I don't know why they were cut.

I had one quibble. You probably could guess what it is. I really was fine until Jennifer Garner says “you deserve everything you want.”
The idea of “I deserve this” was pretty prevalent and I guess it’s affirming. I guess. But it sort of knocked me into that place of “yes, cute young white boys in very rich neighborhoods in liberal communities are so very deserving. I hope it all works out for him. (Spoiler: it will)”
It’s sort of the white privilege version of affirmation
But I was able to sort of knock it aside enough to really be moved by him and his dad and to celebrate the ending... Mainly because the lead actor was so very god damned charming
by Anonymous | reply 580 | June 18, 2018 5:00 AM |

You should go to a shrink and get that checked out. Everybody deserves happiness. It's not a limited good only some deserve and others do not. Just because a fictional character gets his happy ending doesn't mean he stole it from a poor teen from the other side of the tracks.

Welcome to the real world [R582].
Where you discuss Disney Happy Endings and complain they don't happen for everybody in the real world? You can either whine and complain about the problem, and have the nerve to speak for others sharing your issue for whatever reason, or quit your whining and look for a solution, but don't be an incel and blame others for your personal issues or hide behind others like a coward.

I'm far from an incel, I've had probably too much sex, and a few boyfriends (though none worked out long-term, that is another part of the read world, a relationship is a beginning, not an ending)
I am just empathetic and realistic about the struggles people face in life. Interesting that people who raise that point you want to go on some angry rant and call them "cowards" and "incels". Your comments are far more illuminating about yourself than I think you realize.
