Jessica Chastain Explains Why Nudity in American Films Usually Bothers Her
Jessica Chastain is opening up about doing nudity on screen and her thoughts on the differences between American cinema and European cinema.
The Oscar-nominated actress goes nude in the movie Salome, which was her first starring role before she broke into the industry.
“I have no issues with nudity, especially in a lot of European cinema that I adore, but I find that in American cinema, the idea of nudity has always bothered me. I realized why: For me, I’m uncomfortable with nudity when it feels like it’s not the person’s decision to be naked, when it’s something that has been put upon them,” Jessica said in an interview with Vulture.
She added, “In a way, I see that as like a victimization. It trains an audience that exploiting someone in their body should be normal for nudity, when I think the opposite. When people are completely in control of their decisions, that is a really exciting thing. I love the human form — male nudity, female nudity, I’m all about it. I had to get to that place where, for me, it was my decision.”

Yes r9, she has had such an odd career trajectory. Went to Juiliard which usually will at least get you a bunch of regional theater jobs......but nothing for like 10 years. Not even Law and Order. Then suddenly she is in a play with Pacino then seemingly everywhere. There is a story there somewhere. I don't even know what she did for those 10 years. Was she in an asylum?

I actually agree with her. Generally speaking, the European films I see can include plenty of nudity, but it's not filmed in a particularly suggestive way. Most of the time, with American films, they're definitely focused on highlighting the actors bodies, so that there are obvious key lights emphasizing breasts and butts (but not dicks, of course). Then again, I'm sure their are sexually exploitative European films that are never shown in the US.

My big issue with Chastain in ZD30 is that she's obviously smart enough to have known exactly what the problems with the film were. Sometimes you can tell the actors don't "get" it, but she did, and she did the movie anyway.

Something that always comes to my mind when discussing filmed nudity in America is NYPD Blue. They went out of their way to show all their actors asses. It got to the point that it was just hilarious. The camera would literally be shooting a conversation by moving the camera back and forth between the faces of the two people talking then, suddenly, one of them would be getting in the shower and the camera would literally pan down, focus on the ass for about ten seconds, and then go right back to filming like normal. So stupid.
I think that's the difference she's talking about between America and Europe. In Europe they actually have casual nudity on their regular tv shows, not glorified ass shots for the shock factor.

r16 Zero Dark Thirty is anti-feminist in that it advocates torture for one thing but also because [spoiler] the one woman who does the most traditional woman-based stereotypical action, she "likes" a contact and bakes him a birthday cake, ends up getting everybody blown up. She's soft. Where as Jessica Butchtain is the type of tough, no holds barred war criminal we need if we're ever going to defeat "terrrrrrism."

R12 What do you mean nothing? After graduating from Juilliard in 2003, she did 2 guest spots in 2004. In 2005 she booked what would have been a regular role in the Dark Shadows pilot. 2005/2006 she had 3 episode arc on Law & Order. Then she does the Salome play, more guest spots and Salome movie. 2008 she films Terrence Malick’s Tree of Life. In 2010, Buzz from various projects gets her a supporting role in The Help — her first studio film. Not really an odd career trajectory at all.

She is right that America is very hung up about nudity in a "oh, look! BOOOBIES!" sort of way. Just look at teen shows like Riverdale where mature gay guys go gaga over KJ Apa being shirtless like they've never seen a shirtless jock before.
Mainstream America is very imature when it comes to nudity. And it's pushed into this sleazy corner where women perform for men's amusement (like girl on girl action). That's why on regular TV lesbian characters and kissing scenes between girls or women are more acceptable by the mainstream, because guys find girl on girl action entertaining and guy on guy action humiliating and demeaning. And who is in charge of most of Hollywood content? (Straight / Closeted, White) Men.

Maybe she should just consider another 'profession' altogether ? Does she really believe that european actresses 'choose' to be naked ? What is she trying to do ? Beat Hanoi Jane to the hypocrisy game? I can respect an actress who says I want to live a decent life, like your great actress Gena Rowlands, and accepts the sacrifices of a low key indie career, and never even kiss her own husband on screen. But miss Chastain really wants the hollywood life it seems. Her feminist activist act is tired honestly. Actresses are whores honey. Try teacher, or doctor, or nun if you are so morally superior.

Ehh, I’m tired of this Failed Leading Lady and her preaching. It seems like she thinks of herself as enlightened and really smart. She has something to say on everything, and guess what? Europe or Japan does it better. America is just so old hat....despite Hollywood being the reason she’s still not living in a shed somewhere in Northern California.
Sure, Europe and Asia do some great things, but her idea is not an uncommon one with the (wanna be) elite leftist here in the States. She has become tiresome and I would respect what she’s saying if she moved to France and settled into a nice, cozy, SMALL, European carrer, but I don’t think that’s what she wants. Her European projects have been bad (Elenor Rigby) to horrible (Miss Julie) and she must know they have slowed her rise.
She was really promising almost 10 years ago, but she’s a contrarian. Anything you like, she’s going to find a problem with. She’s become so pious.
What is it with her and these other women? I never thought she was a lesbian. Just one of those women that does nothing but support other women and blames men for oppressing women. It seems fake. I think the women see this as ass-kissing. Also, she has daddy issues.
The future is female don’t cha know.

R74, has she been officially cast in It 2? I know that she’s up for the part, close with the producer/director, blah blah blah, but I’d be surprised if a major studio backed her at this point, especially a potential blockbuster like that film. There’s only one female character in the film, and since it has such a male heavy audience, casting such a self-righteous elitist bitch who clearly hates men seems like a colossally bad idea that could lose the movie millions. They’d be better off with fan fave Amy Adams.
There’s a reason why Hollywood publicists used to tell their clients to shut up about politics and social issues. Now when you look at someone like Chastain, you don’t think about her acting. You think about her outrage. And no one wants to hear the rants of an obscenely rich and famous actress from California.

I have to say, I am uncomfortable with the involvement of CAA in #TIMESUP, and having Goldberg and Miller as speakers for the movement at @Tribeca. Seems badly timed.
JC: "In the beginning CAA offered space in LA. Our houses cannot hold all the women that want to be involved. We had to find large spaces. They are not leading this. The women at the meetings bring up ideas on how we can continue to move things forward. All these women are the leaders"
