January Jones
I'm watching the third season of Mad men again--it's often considered one of the best seasons, with the final break-up of Don's and Betty's marriage and the breakaway of the core players from the old Sterling Cooper firm bought out by the British (and also the death of JFK)--and I am very impressed by January Jones. She's quite good at playing a very complex character: Betty is really hurt in the season by the final revelations that Don is not who he claims to be, by the death of her father and of JFK; yet she is repeatedly a terrible mother to the older kids (to Sally in particular), but a good and loving mother to baby Gene. She's not been very popular on Datalounge (I think in large part because of the character). It's a very hard role, and she's quite good. She's not afraid to be unlikable.
She's not done very much since "Mad Men." I'm not clear whether it's because she's had trouble with other roles (she was, admittedly, terrible in the "X-Men" movie she did--bland and uncharismatic), or because of her new baby, or what.

I found her acting to be great because I hated Betty. I think she is a child, dumb, mean, and hurtful. She is hurt by Don because she is so self-centered she didn't see him for what he was. And she is spoiled. Spoiled people always fail to see that they live on shifting sands. And Betty is that sort of person. So Jones did an excellent job of bringing those traits out.

On "Mad Men", she was stunningly beautiful and damn good at her job, a lovely face concealing infinite layers of unhappiness and madness.
Yet everywhere else, she's been stiff and bland and her face is nothing special!
I've never been able to figure out how the "MM" people managed to make her seem so much better than she is everywhere else. Did the writers, directors, and cinematographers do everything for her? Or was that just the one show that really suited her talents?

R3, I think everyone gave their best performances on that show. Jon Hamm, same thing. I haven’t seen him do anything close to his Don Draper. Or Christina H.
The supporting cast was excellent, too. And I absolutely loved the cameos by unexpected actors (Juliette Binoche, Linda Cardellini).

She can be a very good actress in the right role with the right director. Mad Men was magic for her. Unfortunately, it appears she doesn't have much range otherwise. In addition to the X-Men movies, she was one of the worst SNL hosts I'd ever seen.
Btw, I loved her on MM.

Jones has been the third lead for four seasons of FOX's Will Forte sitcom, The Last Man on Earth. Network sitcoms don't have the audience they used to, but as an actor, you can't say she's barely working when she's been a regular on a network sitcoms for the past few years. I don't think there was even a year between finishing Mad Men and starting this sitcom -- she was never really out of work.
I think she was incredible in Mad Men, but I've never been too impressed with her elsewhere. You wouldn't think she'd be fantastic at comedy, and you'd mostly be right, but she doesn't embarrass herself on the sitcom, and she holds her own in a very talented cast.

She's no great actress, but I have to say that MM lost a certain quality when Don and Betty divorced and JJ's screen time was drastically cut. I I found their dynamic and that whole '60s suburban vibe much more intriguing than the office politics or Don's marriage to Megan.

I wonder if she was creating problems on the MM set when they wrote the divorce storyline? Divorce in the 60s was a huge taboo and didn't really become acceptable until the 1970s. And when she became pregnant, she didn't lose the baby weight quickly and so that's why they wrote in the Weight Watchers storyline.
by Anonymous | reply 14 | March 29, 2018 6:41 PM

That's not true, R14. She found out she was pregnant during the off season, but knew that she would be quite big by the time they were back at work to film the next season. She told Weiner and he came up with the storyline. She said in an interview that she filmed one episode in the fat suit while still pregnant, then had the baby after that episode was filmed. For the rest of the season, she was losing the baby weight and they had to re-fit the prosthetics regularly because underneath it, she was headed back down to her pre-pregnancy size.

What R7 said. Very limited actress. Mad Men worked for her because Betty Draper was a very two-dimensional, one-note character. Bored housewife, jilted wife, lather, rinse, repeat. Not exactly Shakespeare. She was fun to watch, but half of that was the costumes and just her physicality. She’s very pretty and she looks frozen in that era, but she’s not the most compelling performer.

Oh, yes, Mary, so sharp of you. Matt Weiner actually wanted Don and Betty to stay married forever and live happily ever after in wedded bliss, but then January Jones acted up one time too many and Weiner had to pull that whole “Don Draper is a serial philaderer who mistreats all women, always” storyline out of left field to cover it up. Mad Men was supposed to be a family drama about a long-married couple until January Jones fucked it all up.

Betty's character was reduced in the later seasons. She had zero growth as a character. All her scenes consisted of her screaming at Don. Gone were the coffee chats with the next door neighbor and the new husband they brought in had to be interesting because she wasn't. They even had to bring in his mother to spice up those scenes.

I was being facetious, R20. Another poster suggested Don and Betty’s divorce was only written because JJ might’ve been difficult on the set. Now you’re saying her role was “reduced in later seasons.” Well, yeah, her character divorced the show’s lead. Not because of some off camera drama or the actor’s lack of talent but because that was the natural progression for her character.

It's odd because today, soon after waking up, I had the image of Betty Draper in my mind. Where she is in a nightie and an overcoat, cigarette dangling from her lips and she is shooting out of the air the pet pigeons of her obsessed neighbor who had been mean to her kids.
It is such a great scene. The imagery is great and the whole thing catches you so off-guard.

Love her, I don't know how good she is in other roles but I love her as Betty. Betty has been sheltered and January sometime does this look where she smiles to herself when she's proud of something she'd done that is just so girlish. Of course she is beautiful to look at, especially the clothes of that era - especially when she'd go riding - there is a scene in the kitchen when Sally wants to help take off her boots I remember Betty looking stunning! Speaking of, when people say what a bad mother Betty is, it is validating to me because my mother, also named Betty, was a thousand times worse than she was. Besides, Don is a shit husband to her! I won't spoil the series end for you OP, but I've said it here before that I think Betty is the hero of that series.

R36, Matthew Vaughn, director of X-men first class. Explains why he didn’t attend the premier. Jason sudeikis is wishful thinking on a lot of people’s part. Jason would have stood up and claimed him as his son, don’t think he was really with anyone at the time. Vaughn is a sniveling grasping coward, married to Claudia Schiffer mother of his 3 (legitimate) children. Hence why paternal identity is hu$h hu$h.

R38, interesting when you look at Vaugh's own life:
"Vaughn was born in London. He had thought that he was the child of an affair between his mother, Kathy Ceaton (died 20 July 2013), and American actor Robert Vaughn. A paternity investigation[3] subsequently identified his father as George Albert Harley de Vere Drummond,[4][5] an English aristocrat who is a godson of King George VI."

Xander is Vaughn’s. Fits in so many ways. He clearly loves blondes. What’s so interesting is the similarity to Vaughn’s own upbringing. His mother Kathy Ceaton was a socialite whore and total slave to the dick (NOTHING wrong with that). She didn’t know who exactly matt’s daddy was so fuckbuddy and actor Robert Vaughn stepped up and gave him his name. But true to character, later when Matt found out his real father was a married titled aristocrat, he legally changed his surname to the fancier double barreled de Vere Drummond. Of course still uses Vaughn professionally. Wonder if Xander does the same some day.

I don't care about JJ, but I LOVED Betty Draper, Joanne and Trudy the Park Avenue Princess.
I was sad when Betty started receiving less screen time and I was hoping she wouldn't give up on Don's big dick and bigger paycheck. So much of his marital issue could have been swept over if he would have thrown Betty a fuck here and there. I know Don was a cheater but her really started to downgrade after the split. Like everyone else I adored her clothing and the bitchy looks those secretaries gave when she showed up at Don's job in season one. Her hair was always laid to the Gods; Meghan was pure trash compared to Betty.
This and the outfit she wore to slap that woman at the supermarket are my favorite Betty looks.

The woman who played Meghan was so dull and annoying I was ready to leave the theater when she popped up in the movie Brooklyn, but she was really good in a small role. Regardless, it is never good when a showrunner gets a proverbial hard on for a certain character or actor and ruins a show to relentlessly highlight/push him or her despite audience and critical push back. See also Alan Ball with Stephen Moyer on True Blood, or Negan on The Walking Dead. They are their own worst enemy.

I loved Betty's character. Everyone hates her for being a bitch, but i'm sure if any one of us was trapped in a boring housewife role with a cheating husband we'd all be pretty bitchy.
Betty was educated, she spoke Italian. I wish the writers of the show would have done more with her character. I always thought that she should've escaped her boring subrurban life and moved to Italy to become a courtesan. How fabulous would that have been?!
Meghan's character was awful, she looked like Freddie Mercury in drag. I think Betty remained beautiful throughout all seasons of Mad Men. Even Joan began to look very matronly towards the end of the show.

The show was about Don, and when Weiner decided to have them divorce, Betty was much less in evidence on the show. She was mostly on the show after season 3 in relation to Sally, Bobby and Gene since they are Don's children.
Though divorce was not widespread among the general population in the 1960s, it was much more common among the Madison Avenue elites during that time (divorce was indeed more popular among wealthy people since the 19th century than it was among average folk until the 1970s). Keep in mind that, of the major ad agency characters, Roger Sterling, Duck Phillips, Joan Holloway Harris, and Peter Campbell all were divorced or separated at one time or another on the show. So it was not unusual for Weiner to have Betty and Don divorce.
Finally, Weiner has said multiple times in interview that January Jones was one of his favorite people to work with in the show. He did not consider her unpleasant to work with.

Well, Betty certainly had the ability to pull in some good dick. I loved the look of her second husband. I liked Megan initially. I loved the Betty Draper character and agree that the show lost something when the focus moved from her to Megan. I also hated that Don never learned anything and kept making the same mistakes over and over.
January Jones is beautiful and a good fit for the role, but I believe Matt Weiner and the show's director's likely had to coach her big time to get the performance they wanted. This likely got tiresome as her character became more complex and they realized January couldn't really keep up with that - her performance was mostly one note after season 1/2.
I also do believe she was not really well-liked on set. She is one of the only cast members who is not featured on the DVD commentaries.

I don't think that's true. She didn't have much rapport with the other actors because she didn't work with them. Although she was a prominent character, her scenes were solely with Jon Hamm, their kids, and her second husband. I think once a season she'd visit his office or his NY apartment. I've seen interviews with other actors commenting that they only got to see January at the parties and promotions. There didn't seem to be any dislike. And the actress who played her daughter had often claimed that she adored her.

When Betty and Don divorced, the more interesting storyline would have had Betty move to New York City also and try to make a living. She could have been a salesgirl like Joan. She would have totally fit into the swinging 60s NYC life. And it would have been interesting to see her try to get back into modeling, etc. And of course, it would have given an extra layer of tension between Don and Betty as to who should be watching the children. I think they didn't go with that storyline because JJ couldn't act.

It's always shocked me the way DL denizens mock Jessica Pare. I know you probably don't know this, but in 2001 JP starred in a very good lesbian-themed movie called Lost and Delirious. It's about two boarding-school girls who are in love and about to graduate (the other girl is played by Piper Perabo). But the Pare character's parents would never accept her being a lesbian so she decides to go out with boys to please them and dumps the Piper character.
It's a very sad movie, but I could really relate to it, and it was very courageous of both women to play those parts. So I don't care what JP has done since then, I'll always respect her for being in that movie.
Also starring Mischa Barton back when she was just a pup.

r99 I doubt Betty would like living in NYC after divorcing Don; she was too weak to handle the laddies who lunch crowd and could hardly manage raising a family in the burbs, with hired help! Almost every business dinner she went to made her come off almost embarrassingly vapid and immature compared to the wives of Don's associates. Her arrested development even extended to her "night out" outfits which were always a bit behind the times for the city. These minor details are a part of my love of this show and her character.
She did moved to NYC when she was young and quickly caught a husband before fleeing back into the comfort of the burbs where she belonged.

I also loved that in the first two or three seasons, it seemed Betty longed for something more than suburbia and raising the kids while her whore husband fucked around and got drunk all the time. I did think JJ did a good job at portraying this under-the-surface feeling, but it kind of fizzled out and she just became mean, spoiled and unhappy Betty.

R126 because she wasn’t gonna be a single mother in the 60s even if Don set her up nicely. I think Henry really loved the idea of who Betty was. And she didn’t know how to live without having a man take care of her.

I get that r127, but the only reason she left Don was because she had Henry waiting in the wings. She even had the nerve to move him into Don's house. I think nice and boring and safe was a nice change from Don. Henry had a prestigious career in state politics. He was good looking and he adored her.
Don was a liar, drunk and a cheat. He completely lied about who he was. The bigger question would have been why she would have stayed with him. It was tough to be divorced then but since as you say she could pretty much just pick up with her old life with a different man who wasn’t an asshole, why not?

Loved JJ on Mad Men and have followed her on Instagram for 3 years or so?
She appears as deep as a plate. But she did want to have a child, so she must have some good qualities.
She is aging amazingly well and has great skin. But again, I have grown to like her less and less based on her Instagram. Agreed that she has a subtle sense of humor, so she's not a complete dumb-dumb.
Some of my favorite scenes were Betty and Sally at the Thanksgiving dinner at Henry's mother's house. Betty and Glenn in that supermarket parking lot (stunningly photograph and I cannot deny her heartbreaking performance- I think it is my favorite scene of the entire series). I liked later Betty just as much as early Betty. And she MADE those last few episodes. I thought she was lovely. I loved her walking up those university stairs while Sally read that letter.

Betty was my favorite character on MM. I don't think JJ just "lucked" into that performance. She was perfect, and I always missed her on the episodes she wasn't in. I loved the ep where she and Don hook up at parents weekend at summer camp. They had amazing chemistry, and even though they didn't last, JJ and Hamm really make you believe, even at the end, that Don and Betty never loved anyone else as much as they did each other.
God, I miss Mad Men! I haven't gotten as deeply into any show since.

R156I never bought into that Don and Betty thing at the end. Betty wanted the kids in a better home environment. So Dick Whitman(AKA Don) was out. However I do think that JJ has a thing for Hamm in real life. She can't stop posting pictures of them together. I wonder if he fucked her as well.

I just hope my cock will touch the sides because you're so much of a loose slut. Now, now don't talk. All I'm interested is in you sucking and fucking my cock. Your tits aren't much to look at. In fact you're pretty ugly. A fuck's a fuck I guess and you do look better than that bush pig McGowan. Just put that paper bag on your head and bend over. That's a good girl.

I just really loved Sal. It was nice to see a homosexualist that was an integral part of the show. Was really sad to see him going. Don seeing him with the bellboy at the hotel was one of the best moments of the show.

Miss January is certainly an actress of limited range. But that range includes being able to play an ice princess blonde like Betty. I agree, Betty was probably fairly close to January's real personality. so it wasn't much of a stretch.
A lot of actors have a limited range. If the writers like the actor, they write the character to the actor's strengths.
But Jan, as well as Jon, both looked FANTASTIC in 60s outfits, which I'm sure contributed to them getting cast

She's had way more success than most.
She'll have syndication/streaming residuals for both a drama and a sitcom.
And child support plus hush money.
by Anonymous | reply 220 | April 3, 2018 6:54 PM

Syndication and streaming from Mad Men? Probably a pittance. She might have done better on Last Man but she's not the star.
Child support? From whom? Hush money...what hush money from Whalestein?!
by Anonymous | reply 221 | April 3, 2018 7:02 PM

Yeah, I don't see her getting any MM residuals. Even it were syndicated, one-hour dramas almost never do well in syndication. The key is to get on a successful sitcom for 5 years and hope it's successful in syndication. If it is, you can pull up the brinks truck.
by Anonymous | reply 222 | April 3, 2018 7:08 PM
|
You do get residuals for streaming. I was in an episode of a Netflix show and I get my $11.13 every six months! Mad Men is likely inifinitely more popular in streaming than the show I was on and she was in a majority of the episodes AND Mad Men is available on other platforms. She probably does OK with residuals - not enough to let her retire, of course...

I doubt many people are streaming Mad Men. Like most esoteric series, you watch it once but never really go back to. It's not comfort TV that you revisit over and over.
by Anonymous | reply 224 | April 3, 2018 7:28 PM

Maybe so, but I know a lot of people who have revisited iconic recent period series like Downton Abbey. Mad Men is not exactly "feel good" TV, but I can also see people who missed it the first time around checking it out for binging.

R224 Yes. It has cult status. It is coffee money to JJ no matter how you spin it. Last Man might prove to be a bigger financial windfall for her.

R227 Wishful thinking. I like the show but the retro thing is a hard sell when platforms like Netflix,Hulu and Amazon are doing spanking new shows set in the present or beyond. Baby gays will be revolted by January Jones' wretched acting and turn away.

Ken Cosgrove was the hottest thing on that show. He burned up the screen so much with sexual heat, that in the later seasons, they made him wear an eyepatch because he was sexier than Jon Hamm.

Betty was a one note performance. Weiner's writing made that character not even ruined by a terrible actress like JJ. Charlie Mc Carthy would shine in that role.

Peggy's insecurities and bullying of her staff people were both irritating and pathetic to watch. She was a Don wannabe but forgot that image was everything in that line of business; she always looked lumpy and boring in those junior high '60s-era clothes. A bow-shaped barrette?! Her taste in men was also bad of course, but then she was no prize either. I was kind of skeptical though that she had no idea she was pregnant in season 1 ---how stupid is that? Peggy got the happy ending though which pissed me off.
As for JJ, I think she played Betty perfectly---that odd detachment of hers along with that innate cold selfishness was very effective as a foil versus the other earthier/lusty women Don fucked with. I also agree that she looked fantastic in those clothes and accessories.
Just as an aside, the plot line with the pudgy and ugly Glenn kid was weird, especially when he was spying on her when she was on the toilet and then later when he wanted a lock of her hair ---not to mention the handholding they did. Somehow it seemed that she showed more sincere emotion with Glenn in the parking lot scene than she did berating Don for all his infidelities. I actually thought that she would end up fucking the teenaged thuggish Glenn, as some kind of finished business to do before she dies of cancer. What was the point of Glenn's character anyway?

It showed the deep longing in Betty for some closeness. Where she wasn't afraid of being rejected, left, or judged. Plus he was innocently taking her love. Not like Dirty Don.

Don is so fucking hot that I still wanted to fuck his ass no matter how bloated or south he went. He really embodies the gorgeous man who never works out...ever persona. That is a tightrope that most men can not ever walk. As for the lovely January Jones - she is stunningly beautiful and she played the role of Betty to a "T". I highly doubt that she will win any Oscars, but most of those PR campaigns are over-hyped anyway. She did a great job - beautiful, annoying, hypocritical, somewhat loyal, often weak, and a somewhat terrible mother who still remained relatable.
