"God's Own Country" (2017)

Did we like this? Sort of an English Brokeback (yes, there is peen).

by Anonymousreply 173July 27, 2018 12:05 AM

Yes. A very good film.

by Anonymousreply 1March 28, 2018 4:31 AM

No, nothing like BBM.

by Anonymousreply 2March 28, 2018 10:03 AM

Is the "Search" not working, OP?

by Anonymousreply 3March 28, 2018 11:05 AM

I really liked it. I am not sure I would have been a fan if the two protagonists were not gay. Which might be an odd thing to say but the sexuality was the most interesting thing about it. It’s wortg watching though as felt realistic and the lead was excellent.

by Anonymousreply 4March 28, 2018 11:16 AM

*worth

by Anonymousreply 5March 28, 2018 11:17 AM

Unfortunately most gay-themed movies are really bad so this was a surprise. Great story and very well done.

by Anonymousreply 6March 28, 2018 11:37 AM

[quote]Is the "Search" not working, OP?

Seriously, there were oodles of threads on this movie.

by Anonymousreply 7March 28, 2018 11:41 AM

FF this thread . If we can't talk about CMBYN, this shouldn't be allowed either.

by Anonymousreply 8March 28, 2018 11:50 AM

I liked it. Saw it right after Love Simon and I was glad to see gay men in both. These guys didn't appear to be sexually fluid ala CMBYN so I appreciated that aspect.

by Anonymousreply 9March 28, 2018 12:09 PM

I love the theme song.

Armond White wrote a great review of the film saying that it's more of a corrective to BROKEBACK MOUNTAIN, which makes a lot of sense.

by Anonymousreply 11March 28, 2018 12:21 PM

I wanted to like it more than I did. I just didn't think the leads had the sort of chemistry you need to pull off a love story like this. But it's clear Francis Lee is quite talented.

And R11, I can believe that. The Brokeback influence is quite heavy, right down to a couple of shots seemingly lifted wholesale from the earlier film.

Well, of course not.

by Anonymousreply 17March 28, 2018 4:25 PM

The peen was outstanding. The ball’s in your court, Timmy and Armie.

by Anonymousreply 18March 28, 2018 4:26 PM

Very good film- quite different from CMBYN. Both excellent films.

by Anonymousreply 19March 28, 2018 4:28 PM

Loved it! Yes, the characters barely communicated by speaking, but that really was effective emotionally.

by Anonymousreply 20March 29, 2018 9:36 PM

[quote]the characters barely communicated by speaking

Actually, they did. We just couldn't understand a word of it.

by Anonymousreply 21March 29, 2018 9:38 PM

IS IT GOOD?

NEVER HEARD OF IT

by Anonymousreply 22March 29, 2018 10:04 PM

LOVE IT.

But where have you been, OP?

by Anonymousreply 23March 29, 2018 10:05 PM

Not like Brokeback. SPOILER. Brokeback is the misery of the closet. Grim grim grim. GOC is a angry young man who figures out he can love, be tender and have a relationship. That's the best part of it. Its a farm boy and a roma but its many gay young man's story of figuring it out.

by Anonymousreply 24March 29, 2018 10:15 PM

Yeah there is the superficial similarities to Brokeback because of gay farmers, but that is where it ends. The two movies really aren't alike at all thematically.

gimme the exhuberant joy of CMBYN anyday sir

by Anonymousreply 27March 30, 2018 2:45 AM

Um, R27, the God's guys end up together.

In CMBYN, Oliver dumps the twink and marries a woman, leaving the twink in a flood of tears.

"Exhuberant joy?" Frau fantasy, more like it.

by Anonymousreply 28March 30, 2018 3:20 AM

I liked CMBYN more than GOC, but only one had a happy ending, and it wasn't the movie I liked more.

by Anonymousreply 29March 30, 2018 3:28 AM

I'm from Yorkshire, that was an impressive attempt at the Yorkshire accent. Other than that I wasn't particularly wowed by the film. I really wanted to see passion during the sex scenes but it came across as two straight guys trying to do gay sex like Brokeback. It's 2018 and we're still not seeing "proper" gay sex in gay themed films and they still choose straight actors as the lead. Disappointing.

by Anonymousreply 30March 30, 2018 3:43 AM

Hmm. Okay, given, R30. They are closety at first.

Can you kink something of different UK accents? I love when Brit, Scot and Welsh celebs are on Graham Norton's show comparing accents. How is Yorkshire different?

by Anonymousreply 31March 30, 2018 3:46 AM

link, not kink (although that'd be okay, too)

How is this not Liverpuddlian?

by Anonymousreply 34March 30, 2018 4:17 AM

by Anonymousreply 35March 30, 2018 4:24 AM

The lack of chemistry was disappointing and I've seen that story many times before.

by Anonymousreply 36March 30, 2018 4:32 AM

I said it on another thread about the movie: it might be a bit unsettling if you're squeamish or a germaphobe. I liked the movie in the end but I found some parts gross.

by Anonymousreply 37March 30, 2018 4:36 AM

one guy was cute. the other was fug ugly

CMBYN....both were hot as fuk

by Anonymousreply 38March 30, 2018 8:05 AM

R38 Yeah, that's how you critique films, you retard.

by Anonymousreply 39March 30, 2018 8:19 AM

R8 Be gone stupid fangirl.

by Anonymousreply 42March 30, 2018 9:18 AM

What's particularly special about it, I think, is that on one level it's about the value and importance of intimacy and of physical touch. In effect, Gheorghe teaches (or shows) Johnny how to be intimate with another man and this filters through into his other relationships (like the scene where Gheorghe strokes Johnny's hand with his finger and then, in the following scene, Johnny does the same to his comatose father's hand in hospital, which the father responds to). I think it's a really great thing in a gay movie to have this emphasis on intimacy and physical touch.

by Anonymousreply 43March 30, 2018 9:25 AM

r39, I can't either. So I don't. I have Purposely Bad Speller blocked. Twice.

by Anonymousreply 44March 30, 2018 10:52 AM

by Anonymousreply 47March 30, 2018 12:59 PM

Its a dessert topping, R47. Available in The South.

by Anonymousreply 48March 30, 2018 1:01 PM

[quote]With another man instead of a sheep.

The majority of the film is about the growing intimacy between the two men. The scene where Gheorghe nurtures the lamb is symbolic of the way he nurtures Johnny. There's plenty of touching, stroking, kissing and fucking between them. It's a lovely film. And it's the diametric opposite of that frau shit set in Italy.

by Anonymousreply 49March 30, 2018 2:40 PM

I thought the love scene was erotic, when the guy is on the ground naked, while the other guy is going down on him.

by Anonymousreply 50March 30, 2018 2:52 PM

I agree with everyone that the emphasis this film places on learning how to be intimate rather was refreshing, and a lesson that resonates in the lives of a lot of gay men.

by Anonymousreply 51March 30, 2018 3:15 PM

It was a beautiful movie but too grotesque in the handling of the animals. I know people that walked out of the film at Sundance when Gheorghe skins the little dead sheep.

The first sex scene is hilarious though, Johnny just walks to [a peeing] Gheorghe already touching himself. lol Johnny was just too horny he couldn't be bothered with asking the guy if he wanted to have sex with him or if he was attracted to him at all.

by Anonymousreply 52March 30, 2018 3:24 PM

Johnny didn't have the skills to approach it in a better way r52. His whole life was quick anonymous hook-ups, you see how amused Gheorghe is when he realizes after the hook up Johnny doesn't even know how to behave around him. He is not used to handling anything other than a wham, bam, thank you ma'am.

by Anonymousreply 53March 30, 2018 3:27 PM

The bit I don't get with that first sex scene is when Johnny is walking towards him with his hand down his pants and when Gheorghe sees him he rolls his eyes. I don't understand why he rolls his eyes like that.

by Anonymousreply 54March 30, 2018 3:27 PM

The movie that is better than CMBYN

by Anonymousreply 55March 30, 2018 3:33 PM

R10 Interesting. Is the Patrick Wolf guy gay?? I've also heard his music on another gay-themed film

by Anonymousreply 56March 30, 2018 3:35 PM

[quote]Is the Patrick Wolf guy gay??

Yes.

by Anonymousreply 57March 30, 2018 3:36 PM

[quote]I don't understand why he rolls his eyes like that.

Because as you said.

[quote]Johnny is walking towards him with his hand down his pants

Gheorghe is like really? This is your move to take it to more than friends, cruising me out of the blue like we are in a gay bathhouse? But he is horny enough to let it happen.

by Anonymousreply 58March 30, 2018 3:36 PM

r58 Ah, yes. I understand now. The reason I wasn't sure is because I didn't think that Gheorghe knew or suspected that Johnny was gay and the sex scene is so rough that I've always assumed Gheorghe initially thought Johnny was about to punch him and the fight turns into sex after they both realise they need each other's sex juice.

by Anonymousreply 59March 30, 2018 3:40 PM

[quote]the other was fug ugly

I don't need a pretty face, I have a big dick!

by Anonymousreply 60March 30, 2018 3:46 PM

At least that was my interpretation r59. I was sad to see there was no commentary tracks on the DVD, I would have purchased one if so.

by Anonymousreply 61March 30, 2018 4:08 PM

GOC is a VERY simple film. Its lovely and well done but no masterpiece. CMBYN is a bit treacly and it is so annoyingly bourgeois. Still, its pretty good, too.

by Anonymousreply 62March 30, 2018 4:16 PM

Josh O’Connor is really attractive in real life r60

He really uglied up for this role (lost 30 pounds, godawful hairstyle)

by Anonymousreply 65March 30, 2018 5:39 PM

They are, of course, both straight r65. Isn't that the way it always goes.

by Anonymousreply 66March 30, 2018 5:45 PM

[quote] Johnny is walking towards him with his hand down his pants and when Gheorghe sees him he rolls his eyes

That's what I was talking about, Georghe sees Johnny touching himself as he is coming closer, and Johnny actually grabs Gheorghe's hand when the other is still peeing, very Harvey Weinstein of him.

by Anonymousreply 67March 30, 2018 5:53 PM

R66 But how did Josh know the stereotype in gay movies?? He said it was nice to have a film that is NOT about oppression, sickness... etc. He said it perfectly.

by Anonymousreply 78March 30, 2018 8:41 PM

O'Connor was also in a short film last year about a gay couple in the 1950s being blackmailed. It's called THE COLOUR OF HIS HAIR and is written and directed by Sam Ashby (who does a lot of film posters, like the one for WEEKEND)...

by Anonymousreply 79March 30, 2018 8:45 PM

Enjoyed the film but probably not enough to watch it more than once. Was very impressed with the actors, especially Josh O’Connor. He is naturally very bubbly and cheerful, but you would never think that from this performance.

by Anonymousreply 80March 30, 2018 8:57 PM

I actually found O'conner sexy, he makes a hot top and has a nice big dick.

by Anonymousreply 81March 30, 2018 9:08 PM

Johnny is a bottom, isn't he?

by Anonymousreply 82March 30, 2018 9:16 PM

Nope, in the film he does the fucking I think.

[quote]No.

elaborate please. He pings, the is no denying it.

by Anonymousreply 83March 30, 2018 9:21 PM

[quote]Nope, in the film he does the fucking I think

He goes to fuck Georghe during that first sex scene and Georghe stops him and makes it quite clear he's not interested in doing that, which is why Johnny sucks him off. The second sex scene is where Georghe fucks Johnny. From then on, their relationship seems to suggest that Johnny is the submissive one.

by Anonymousreply 84March 30, 2018 9:26 PM

Johnny also fucks the twink earlier in the film.

by Anonymousreply 85March 30, 2018 9:32 PM

r85 But it's clear that Johnny isn't enjoying the sex in that scene. Interestingly, one of the deleted scenes shows him driving to a cruising area and following an older man into the darkness.

by Anonymousreply 86March 30, 2018 9:36 PM

Not only did he enjoy it, he went for seconds when they had oral sex later in the film.

So anyone knows where we can see Josh's short film ? It's not available for stream that I can see, not even in the usual gay torrent sites.

That's a different twink. And O'Connor is clearly pissed out of his skull in the later scene.

by Anonymousreply 88March 30, 2018 10:10 PM

r87 THE COLOUR OF HIS HAIR is still doing the festival circuit, I think, so it's unlikely to be available anywhere for some time.

by Anonymousreply 89March 30, 2018 10:11 PM

Josh is not exactly attractive by his features, but he's utterly charming.

And he has a huge dick. The poor other guy looks like he has a pencil dick compared to Josh's big bratwurst.

Frankly in terms of their sexualities, I liked the film a lot, but I knew nothing about actors watching it and I never doubted they were straight. Neither one could even make me believe they were gay.

by Anonymousreply 99March 30, 2018 10:56 PM

I was told not to see it

just another treacly 'omg am I really gay' mess..

by Anonymousreply 100March 31, 2018 11:07 AM

r100 Homosexuality is secondary in this movie. It's about gentleness, letting yourself be open and vulnerable, how that then gets transmitted to other people etc... Who is this authority figure in your life who tells you which movies to see and which not to see and you blindly follow their advice? Just watch it for yourself and see if you like it.

I still maintain it's a twin movie vis-à-vis CMBYN because it's also about returning to your authentic self. It's just that one depicts lush greens and peaches and the other one stark surroundings and lambs, so people think they're completely different movies. But it all flows from the same source, as conveyed by the motif of streams, waterfalls, and water in general. Both films should be lauded as they tie homosexuality to nature and not depict it as something that occurs in large cities only. You'd be surprised just how much of a shock that is for rural people (like my family in our shithole) to see. It neutralizes their homophobia right at the root.

by Anonymousreply 101March 31, 2018 11:49 AM

[quote]It neutralizes their homophobia right at the root.

Thanks for that interview r71. I like how Josh O'Connor subtly shades CMBYM there, and how he makes the honest point of of how sex/nudity is an integral part of getting into a character's life. And he speaks about it better than Chalamet "except for all the crazy stuff" does.

I keep hearing about this gods country thing?

what is it

by Anonymousreply 109April 1, 2018 3:58 AM

I saw it yesterday, and liked it. I think the shift from physical to emotional intimacy is a significant step for a lot of gay men, and I related to it from that point of view. But I don't think it was particularly groundbreaking.

To be honest, dick or no dick wouldn't have changed anything with the film, though I do think depicting sex is important and that was a major weakness in CMBYN (which I thought was a far more interesting film, despite its own flaws).

[quote]o be honest, dick or no dick wouldn't have changed anything with the film,

I disagree. I think there is an inherent sense of intimacy when you see two people being naked together and it isn't a big deal. When the camera purposely does angles to hide that it creates this emotional divide with the audience, reminds you that you are watching a movie.

I'm asd so have a hard time reading some situations.

by Anonymousreply 133June 5, 2018 9:31 AM

I think Gheorghe was more respectful of people than Johnny and, in that situation, probably felt it was more appropriate to Johnny's father and gran to fuck each other's brains out in the caravan. There's probably something symbolic about the separation of caravan and house going on, too; which might be why the final shot is of both Gheorghe and Johnny going through the door to their home.

PS - the only thing that seemed a little off about that final shot is that I think it would have been better if Johnny opened the door for Gheorghe to walk through first, rather than the other way round.

I just watched it on Netflix last week, it's really sweet. A tad too much of the animal husbandry up close shots, but otherwise, both leads are beautiful men forming a beautiful relationship with a sweet ending. In contrast to CMBYN's bittersweet sad ending.

R136 No gay movie can beat Love,Simon

by Anonymousreply 137June 5, 2018 3:11 PM

Who was the bottom? Johnny topped that guy in the horse trailer so I assume Gheorghe was a bottom.

by Anonymousreply 138June 5, 2018 3:54 PM

From the tumblr blog- "As for the pouting behavior of the caravan, again, we see he hasn’t substantially changed in any way. He’s still all take, take, take while avoiding any serious implications involved."

by Anonymousreply 139June 5, 2018 4:05 PM

r138 Gheorghe definitely isn't a bottom. In their first sex scene Johnny goes to fuck him and Gheorghe makes it quite clear that he doesn't do that.

by Anonymousreply 140June 5, 2018 6:03 PM

I thought he did that because he didn't want to be just another fuck.

by Anonymousreply 141June 5, 2018 7:29 PM

Or maybe he wanted some lube first.

by Anonymousreply 142June 5, 2018 7:33 PM

Yeah ol' spit in one hand Johnny wasn't exactly a skilled lover. Gheorghe had to teach him a few things.

by Anonymousreply 143June 5, 2018 7:36 PM

I thought the plot was really boring. I wish it had been a thriller Phantom Thread type shit where Johnny forces the Romanian guy into sex in exchange for a decent wage, and then becomes sexually obsessed with him, after which the Romanian ends up causing the father's accident and taking control of the farm, and Johnny as well.

by Anonymousreply 144June 5, 2018 7:55 PM

Perfect R144

I wish there had been a Silence Of The Lambs type plot, where grandma was skinning traveling farm hands so she could use their hides to make a human sweater for Johnny...and Georghe has a perfect amount of chest hair.

by Anonymousreply 145June 5, 2018 9:05 PM

It would have been more enjoyable with a few show tunes thrown in.

by Anonymousreply 146June 5, 2018 9:16 PM

r11, the setting was so bleak and unforgiving, I'm truly surprised they didn't take the horror movie angle, whilst telling a story of homosexual passion at the same time. But there probably would have been a huge backlash from the LGTB freaks.

by Anonymousreply 147June 5, 2018 9:20 PM

I am moving to Romania.

by Anonymousreply 148June 5, 2018 9:26 PM

Are Romanians hung?

by Anonymousreply 149June 5, 2018 9:41 PM

I think a gay horror movie would be interesting. I just think there should be more gay movies in general.

by Anonymousreply 150June 5, 2018 9:42 PM

I love Josh's double digit dong.

by Anonymousreply 151June 5, 2018 9:43 PM

Josh really got into method acting for this part. I wonder if that included fucking around with guys?

by Anonymousreply 152June 5, 2018 9:49 PM

That would have been a great film. We need more films with gay storylines.

by Anonymousreply 153June 5, 2018 10:01 PM

Josh's dick makes even Leo Giamani look small.

by Anonymousreply 154June 5, 2018 10:12 PM

Both actors have beautiful uncut cocks.

by Anonymousreply 155June 5, 2018 10:50 PM

Unfortunately in this politically corrected society, gays are only allowed to be portrayed as misunderstood victims. If we had aggressive gays in horror movies, we would go back to being seen as charismatic deviants, and what's wrong with that?

Hmmm....I smell the stench of Matt Anscher ^

by Anonymousreply 158June 5, 2018 11:47 PM

bump

by Anonymousreply 159June 6, 2018 10:32 PM

I liked the movie. It’s a good and positive film with happy ending l, which is rare. It’s not great and doesn’t have he wow factors like BBM or CMBYN.

by Anonymousreply 160June 7, 2018 1:04 AM

R160 ikr!! I watched CMBYN and I was like, "WOW, that's it? Just how shallow are the people who liked it?"

by Anonymousreply 161June 7, 2018 1:23 PM

CMBYN seems to really appeal to people who yearn to be upper middle class squares with a fully stocked library of unread art books.

by Anonymousreply 162June 7, 2018 1:40 PM

R160 I watched cmbyn and my my thoughts of it were wow THIS is BORING!

by Anonymousreply 163June 7, 2018 2:14 PM

r162, exactly. Call Me By Your Name appeals to the indie set, who aspire to be seen as deep thinking artistic people and, more often than not, don't have an interesting thought in their head.

by Anonymousreply 164June 7, 2018 3:53 PM

People into CMBYM tend to be more educated, sophisticated, artistic and well to do.

by Anonymousreply 165June 7, 2018 7:13 PM

r165, no, they just like to seem that way, as a status symbol, because they regard themselves as superior and keep their cruder tastes private.

by Anonymousreply 166June 7, 2018 7:22 PM

We also just like Timmy more than anybody in any of the movies under discussion.

by Anonymousreply 167June 7, 2018 7:41 PM

"We", please don't think the Chalamet fangurls speak for everyone. Just because you are vocal about your obsession doesn't put you in the majority.

by Anonymousreply 168June 7, 2018 8:01 PM

“We” refers to “people into CMBYN,” dumbass.

by Anonymousreply 169June 7, 2018 8:08 PM

Anyone who actually knows about archaeology and classical studies would CMBYN risible. The way they behaved would have been outrageous in the 1880s, let alone the 1980s.

by Anonymousreply 170June 7, 2018 8:29 PM

'would find', obviously

by Anonymousreply 171June 7, 2018 8:30 PM

[quote]“We” refers to “people into CMBYN,” dumbass.

Yes, everyone into CMBYM is a Chalamet fangurl. Except not.

God, the Chalamet obsessives kept derailing much of the discussion and their antics made it harder for me to root for this film, which I had been excited for since I was a fan of the book from years ago.

by Anonymousreply 172June 7, 2018 8:33 PM

Just announced: Josh O'Connor will be playing Prince Charles in the next two seasons of The Crown. He's got the ears -- will he show peen?
