I really don't want to pick on a POC who's doing well, but this guy's simply not a good actor. So many better, not to mention hotter, black actors could've taken his blockbuster roles and done much more with them. Why is Hollywood pushing him so hard?
Who's behind John Boyega's rise in Hollywood?
by Anonymous | reply 66 | March 30, 2018 2:12 AM |
He’s laughably bad in Star Wars.
by Anonymous | reply 1 | March 26, 2018 8:27 AM |
He's british and has a good personality.
by Anonymous | reply 2 | March 26, 2018 8:30 AM |
Most of the British actors that have been tapped by Hollywood for stardom are actually talented. He has no discernible talent, or any screen presence and charisma whatsoever. Completely inexplicable.
by Anonymous | reply 3 | March 26, 2018 8:36 AM |
He's the black Channing Tatum.
No talent but knows how to hustle to get roles.
by Anonymous | reply 4 | March 26, 2018 8:40 AM |
No talent, ridiculously arrogant and annoying. You know he rode The Casting Couch to get where he is.
by Anonymous | reply 5 | March 26, 2018 8:44 AM |
R5 Is he hot enough for the casting couch though?
by Anonymous | reply 6 | March 26, 2018 8:48 AM |
complete mystery.....mediocre at best.
by Anonymous | reply 7 | March 26, 2018 8:50 AM |
Blew the right cocks. No mystery at all.
by Anonymous | reply 8 | March 26, 2018 8:54 AM |
Michael B Jordan is way hotter and actually talented.
by Anonymous | reply 9 | March 26, 2018 9:02 AM |
R6 - He's certainly not to me. As OP said, there are hotter, more talented black actors out there who could do more with the parts Boyega has been given and would be more deserving of the success. I'll add to that there are probably a few of those actors who would manage to stay humble and level-headed. To me, you can just look at him and see how smug and swelled-headed he is. It doesn't matter what he looks like, or how much acting talent he has; it's what he's willing to do and who he does it with, like R8 said. That's Hollywood.
by Anonymous | reply 10 | March 26, 2018 9:04 AM |
must be hung huge: only explanation.
by Anonymous | reply 11 | March 26, 2018 9:10 AM |
They prefer actors of color who are not AA. Michael B. Jordan is.
by Anonymous | reply 12 | March 26, 2018 9:14 AM |
He’s very charming and self-effacing and therefore great in auditions. He has years as a teen actor under his belt. And Americans mistake the manners and self-effacing presentation for not having attitude.
by Anonymous | reply 13 | March 26, 2018 9:44 AM |
George Lucas married a black woman and now feels compelled to cast unqualified black people in his films.
by Anonymous | reply 14 | March 26, 2018 9:46 AM |
He has the worst attitude.
by Anonymous | reply 15 | March 26, 2018 9:48 AM |
R6 I would do him. I love dark-skinned black guys.
by Anonymous | reply 16 | March 26, 2018 10:44 AM |
He is great in "Detroit"
by Anonymous | reply 17 | March 26, 2018 11:06 AM |
hell, he fades into the woodwork in Detroit like he does in everything.
by Anonymous | reply 18 | March 26, 2018 11:19 AM |
Combination of being in the Star Wars films just as the white guilt epidemic was hitting Hollywood.Pacific Rim did ok, not great. He'll fade soon.
by Anonymous | reply 19 | March 26, 2018 11:26 AM |
examples of bad attitude, please.
by Anonymous | reply 20 | March 26, 2018 11:27 AM |
[quote] George Lucas married a black woman and now feels compelled to cast unqualified black people in his films.
George Lucas sold the Star Wars franchise to Disney. Disney makes the casting decisions.
by Anonymous | reply 21 | March 26, 2018 11:42 AM |
[r21] You beat me to the correction.
I would add that because he's quite dark, it's probably difficult for some people of other races to pick up his facial expressions so would deem him an untalented actor.
The assessments here are at the extremities of assessment. I don't think he's the best actor, and he hasn't had the best training, so yeah there is something to be said for him using whatever means at his disposal to get ahead.
Besides which, who watches sci-fi or action movies for great acting?
by Anonymous | reply 22 | March 26, 2018 12:00 PM |
hard to pick up his facial expressions???????
Please...
by Anonymous | reply 23 | March 26, 2018 12:08 PM |
I saw him in a play in London ('Woyzeck') and thought he was really good. I did not like him in the latest SW but I think it was the matter of the script- he got the worse writing of all 4 main characters, and he probably should've played it with less seriousness, but otherwise I think he's fine.
by Anonymous | reply 24 | March 26, 2018 12:18 PM |
Very sexy, especially when he smiles.
by Anonymous | reply 25 | March 26, 2018 12:56 PM |
I don't like him in star wars but I like him in his other works. He is good in star wars but I think they needed someone with more sex appeal.
by Anonymous | reply 26 | March 26, 2018 12:59 PM |
Wow I thought he was fine in Star Wars. I wasn't going to put him forward for the Oscar or anything, but I do not notice how his acting is in any way worse than Kylo or Rey.
by Anonymous | reply 27 | March 26, 2018 1:17 PM |
Well, no one said the other two were good.
by Anonymous | reply 28 | March 26, 2018 1:24 PM |
He pings.
by Anonymous | reply 29 | March 26, 2018 1:28 PM |
He is cute and has a nice body. He has zero acting chops. He has no charisma. He comes across as stuck up in interviews. Someone loves his cock. And the SW role automatically got him other roles. He is no Idris, a charming man who can act and who should be totally nude 100% of the time. When Idris appears, gay men worldwide get an instant stiffy and salivate. I first saw him in Prometheus. I thought, if I had to line up ten of the most gorgeous men in entertainment, he may be number one.
by Anonymous | reply 30 | March 26, 2018 1:29 PM |
Not even Meryl Fuckin' Streep could do anything with the part he's given on SW.
by Anonymous | reply 31 | March 26, 2018 1:30 PM |
Are there any shirtless pics out there of him? He looks fit-fat. I like that.
by Anonymous | reply 32 | March 26, 2018 1:32 PM |
R28 But I feel like that leads to the natural conclusion that they just picked actors for looks and not for ability. I don't see how Boyega is special. And I don't think any of the three was AWFUL (though Driver has some moments). They just lucked out with Poe's actor I guess
by Anonymous | reply 33 | March 26, 2018 1:34 PM |
Yep, Oscar Isaac (Poe) is a very talented actor. Problem with him though is that he's even more arrogant than Boyega. To the point it's turned me off of him.
by Anonymous | reply 34 | March 26, 2018 1:38 PM |
Oscar Isaac (Poe) is a very good actor and he's charming, the others are quite meh and not really that good looking either.
by Anonymous | reply 35 | March 26, 2018 1:38 PM |
So Poe and Finn are gay right?
by Anonymous | reply 36 | March 26, 2018 3:41 PM |
He was an older teen when he started. I recently saw the brit movie that was his breakout role over there. Attack the Block. He was in one series before that. He really has only been working since 2011. I find him seriously over rated and not good looking at all.
by Anonymous | reply 37 | March 26, 2018 3:47 PM |
IT's the age of optics and no one is more on top of this than Jewish Hollywood (who actually love any excuse to celebrate anyone non-Gentile). And he starred in geek favorite Attack the Block -- so it was flavor of the moment geek casting. JJ was prob desperate to get some geeks on board with his SW relaunch.
by Anonymous | reply 38 | March 26, 2018 3:55 PM |
when ever I hear the name George Lucas, I think of his masterpiece: HAROLD THE DUCK
by Anonymous | reply 39 | March 27, 2018 7:07 AM |
He is no Idris Elba, but he's okay. Jason Statham is no Olivier either, yet no on here trashes him for his one dimensional acting style... can't imagine why 🙄🙄🙄
by Anonymous | reply 41 | March 27, 2018 8:27 AM |
Let's see, maybe cause Statham is not the lead of the Star Wars franchise but the lead of small action movies.
And Statham knows how kick ass, he does what he knows to do. John Boyega is supposed to know how to act.
by Anonymous | reply 42 | March 27, 2018 8:32 AM |
He seems way too excited in Star Wars. "Look Ma, I'm a Jedi!"
Tone it down.
by Anonymous | reply 43 | March 27, 2018 8:58 AM |
I'm just glad he wasn't in Black Panther.
by Anonymous | reply 44 | March 27, 2018 9:01 AM |
too Nellie for black panther.
JASTON STRATHAM IS HOT !!!! THE VOICE, THE BODY, EXPRESSES HIMSELF MAGNIFICENTLY
not like a boy fresh from the streets of east London...
must be hung, no other explanation...... my god: he was picked for star wars !!!!! a howling mystery...
by Anonymous | reply 45 | March 27, 2018 12:41 PM |
maybe he has a thrilling exciting personality and it bowls the casting agents right over....
by Anonymous | reply 46 | March 28, 2018 7:28 AM |
His acting in Star Wars distracted me...he was too contemporary, almost like he is in real life and I couldn't see him as a timeless character. I don't think it was poor acting but a specific choice from directors and production. I loved the movie and I usually like him a lot but they should have tone down his part in SW.
by Anonymous | reply 47 | March 28, 2018 7:37 AM |
his face leaves me turgid.
by Anonymous | reply 48 | March 28, 2018 1:32 PM |
that Schneieder guy? from nicolodean? he helps, uh, kids if they gots nice feets...
by Anonymous | reply 49 | March 29, 2018 3:52 AM |
Boyega's very charismatic. Eventhough not exactly handsome he's quite sexy. I didn't like him in The Last Jedi but then again since I hated the script I didn't really like anyone.
Someone brought up Idris Elba. I found him really sexy in The Wire where I thought I first saw him (although I'd actually seen him years earlier in Absolutely Fabulous), and I did enjoy him at first as Luther but after some time his one-dimensional and über masculine black guy persona started to annoy me. His Luther persona seemed to become his public persona as well, and he doesn't seem to be fun at all. Sure Elba can be sexy but he seems so uninteresting that I'd much rather watch Boyega in practically anything before him.
by Anonymous | reply 50 | March 29, 2018 4:08 AM |
He was really good in attack the block. Plus he’s a pretty nice guy. I imagine he’s easy to work with.
by Anonymous | reply 51 | March 29, 2018 4:38 AM |
Can't STAND John Boyega or Daniel whosits from Get Out. Both blank, boring and one note. And I also loathe Jason Statham. His fame mystifies me.
Now Idris and Michael B. Jordan, on the other hand, are both so hot it makes me want to weep AND they are both fantastic actors.
by Anonymous | reply 52 | March 29, 2018 4:59 AM |
[R39] The film is Howard the Duck, not Harold.
by Anonymous | reply 53 | March 29, 2018 5:38 AM |
[quote]And I also loathe Jason Statham. His fame mystifies me.
Statham is sexy as hell, or at least used to be when The Transporter came out. That said he was still super hot in Melissa McCarthy's Spy as well. And he's rumored to be gay which makes him hotter.
by Anonymous | reply 54 | March 29, 2018 5:45 AM |
I liked him in Attack the Block. I don't understand all the negativity in this thread about him. If anyone need acting lessons, it's that Daisey chick!
by Anonymous | reply 55 | March 29, 2018 5:57 AM |
[quote]They prefer actors of color who are not AA. Michael B. Jordan is.
Ding ding ding.
Hollywood LOVES actors of color who are not American. They'll happily cast black UK actors, Asian actors from Taiwan or China, and Spaniards/white South Americans over African-Americans, Asian-Americans, or American Latinos any time. When they do this, they get the 'color' without having to come into contact with American racial/ethnic politics...or so they think. It's the same compulsion that drives Americans to adopt children of color from other countries while ignoring all the American children of color who are available to adopt.
by Anonymous | reply 56 | March 29, 2018 6:05 AM |
He has a certain type of nervous excited energy that comes across as charisma. A great smile.
I think he would be annoying in real life.
by Anonymous | reply 57 | March 29, 2018 6:06 AM |
There are some shots of him in which he looks a lot like Denzel Washington.
by Anonymous | reply 58 | March 29, 2018 8:00 AM |
he is a 2 bit actor who got lucky......he pings.
if only he were as cute as denzy....
by Anonymous | reply 59 | March 29, 2018 9:29 AM |
r56 They hire plenty of white actors from Canada, the UK, Australia, etc., so it's not just an ethnic thing. My theory is that they're often better trained and work more cheaply than their US counterparts.
by Anonymous | reply 60 | March 29, 2018 2:18 PM |
They’re not really better trained. Sure, Ralph Fiennes and Sally Hawkins went to RADA, but Viola Davis and Anthony Mackie went to Juilliard.
I agree that they are cheaper, and also the ones who pick up US representation are the creme of the crop in terms of work ethic, personality and presentation. They know to suck up to casting directors. You can put them in a room of industry people and best charming and professional.
Boyega is a major schmoozer.
by Anonymous | reply 61 | March 29, 2018 7:43 PM |
i really liked him in the funny zombie film.
by Anonymous | reply 62 | March 29, 2018 7:45 PM |
R47 You didn't find Boyega to be believable or appropriate in this scene? ;-)
by Anonymous | reply 63 | March 29, 2018 7:52 PM |
[R56] They hire plenty of white actors from Canada, the UK, Australia, etc., so it's not just an ethnic thing.
Yes, I know that, of course. But since ethnic American actors have been struggling for decades to be represented onscreen, the hiring of foreigners with the same skin color is a different deal than all the foreign white actors.
by Anonymous | reply 64 | March 30, 2018 1:12 AM |
Boyega has a very “African look” unlike African Americans most of who have European ancestors. Maybe the producers were going for that kind of look? I think he is handsome.
Or maybe he is a top on the casting couch with a big dick.
by Anonymous | reply 65 | March 30, 2018 1:44 AM |
agreed, boyega and whats it from Get Out have zero charisma, , but iris and m Jordan are HOTT
