Trust (F/X series)

Getty the 1st (Donald Sutherland) has four mistresses of varying ages who act like a Greek chorus, and we get a scene of JPaul 1st being read pornography by a male assistant before he tries to take the sexiest of the mistresses from behind. And JPaul 3rd is discovered by his disapproving grandfather to have posed for gay porn magazines (which didn't quite happen--nude photos of him did appear in an Italian gay porn magazine, but only well after he had been kidnapped).

It got my attention, but it's a little baroque. There are enormous liberties being taken with the Gettys' actual lives--I've heard some of them are suing the producers for libel.

by Anonymousreply 117March 21, 2020 12:59 AM

Donald Stherland's weird speech about how everything is made from oil reminded me of the 50s film Mrs. Krabappel shows Bart and his fellow students on "The Simpsons" called "A World Without Zinc."

by Anonymousreply 1March 26, 2018 5:53 AM

Where are the JP nudes?

by Anonymousreply 2March 26, 2018 6:07 AM

Much more importantly, where are the Balthazar nudes?

by Anonymousreply 3March 26, 2018 6:12 AM

JFC considering how awful they were could never be shown on film, they need to just STFU.

Most of the principals are dead, anyway. Gail is still alive I think, but all the main JP Gettys are dead. Balthazar is a hot mess, and I don't know how much of the family's story is in this series--he came along after the main tragedies.

by Anonymousreply 4March 26, 2018 6:12 AM

I think it's JPGIII's sister who is suing F/X for defaming the family name--but I don;t see how far she'll get considering how many of the characters in the series are now dead.

by Anonymousreply 5March 26, 2018 6:16 AM

by Anonymousreply 6March 26, 2018 7:47 AM

So who plays Balthazar's father?

by Anonymousreply 7March 26, 2018 9:20 AM

How is Balthazar a mess?

by Anonymousreply 8March 26, 2018 9:33 AM

I think he's getting his shit together R8. He's producing and currently in a rap group. He also looks good. Stopped dying his har and let it go gray the last time I saw a photo.

by Anonymousreply 9March 26, 2018 9:59 AM

JP, Theresa, and the grandson can't get a sentence out without saying :"fucking."

by Anonymousreply 10March 26, 2018 3:09 PM

You had me at nude photos of the grandson. Where are they?

by Anonymousreply 11March 27, 2018 12:06 AM

Is this not going to be a DL fave, as The Alienist is? Did we mention nude photos of a twink?

by Anonymousreply 12March 27, 2018 12:30 AM

Do they faithfully reproduce the little slut's herpetic lip?

Offsite Link
by Anonymousreply 13March 27, 2018 3:03 AM

I am watching mainly for Harris Dickinson who plays the grandson...he was so hot and so good in BEACH RATS. He looks pretty cute in this too, with the curly wig.

by Anonymousreply 14March 27, 2018 3:17 AM

Too much focus on old man sex. I'm hoping we'll see less of that.

by Anonymousreply 15March 27, 2018 3:21 AM

Is this series true to life? WHET JPG III?

by Anonymousreply 16March 28, 2018 1:55 AM

R16, dead. More important, where are his nude pics?

by Anonymousreply 17March 28, 2018 1:58 AM

Has anyone seen the Michelle Williams movie "All the Money in the World" from 2017 about the Getty's?

by Anonymousreply 18March 28, 2018 2:37 AM

I made it through about 40 minutes and bailed. Boring, boring, boring.

by Anonymousreply 19March 28, 2018 5:46 AM

all the $ in thee world.... chris plummer has some balls replacing kevin spacey in this movie with his past history of how he treats people.

by Anonymousreply 20March 28, 2018 6:19 AM

I read a biography of J. Paul Getty in high school. They've taken some liberties to explain his eccentricities. I think the payphone at Sutton Place was gone long before JPG3 was around. I was fascinated by him (No.3) when I was a teenager. I had forgot about the nude photos.

Another interesting Getty is Gordon. Supposedly he would begin Getty Oil board meetings with by singing a song.

by Anonymousreply 21March 28, 2018 6:28 AM

Balthazar lists his Hollywood Hills home (in 2017). What do we think, tasteful friends?

I wanted to watch it on demand last night. I have Spectrum cable. They only had the trailer I was so annoyed.

by Anonymousreply 23March 29, 2018 8:43 PM

I just watched, it was pretty good. I didn't know the Getty history, what a mess.

by Anonymousreply 24March 30, 2018 8:23 PM

Totally R24. Balthazar didn't stand a chance.

by Anonymousreply 25April 1, 2018 9:24 AM

R23, the first episode is at Spectrum Primetime On Demand now. It expires on April 29.

by Anonymousreply 26April 1, 2018 11:27 PM

If JP3 were alive he'd love these adaptations because they cast the most beautiful looking men to play him.  His family should be grateful for that alone.

by Anonymousreply 27April 1, 2018 11:56 PM

What was the butler take from his pocket at the end?

by Anonymousreply 28April 2, 2018 12:24 AM

I really liked Episode #1. Will watch #2 tomorrow. And Harris Dickinson is fucking hot as the sun.

by Anonymousreply 29April 2, 2018 3:31 AM

I really miss seeing Hilary Swank in strong dramatic roles. She's terrific in the show. Glad to see her back.

by Anonymousreply 30April 2, 2018 6:22 AM

[quote] What was the butler take from his pocket at the end?

A figurine from the Getty Villa miniature.

Some nice elements in the second episode but like American Crime: the Assassination of Versace it's short on substance.

by Anonymousreply 31April 2, 2018 3:09 PM

Really, REALLY trying to get into this show, but it isn't happening. Brendon Frazier breaking the fourth wall by talking to the audience and the sort of camp factor just aren't working for me. I really wanted to like it though.

by Anonymousreply 32April 2, 2018 4:40 PM

Rerun early tomorrow (Tuesday, the 3rd) at 1:00AM on FX.

by Anonymousreply 33April 2, 2018 11:23 PM

r10 Teresa is the lion. I don't think she had any lines.

by Anonymousreply 34April 3, 2018 5:49 AM

If the grandson was only 16 at the time of the kidnapping, how could there be (legally published) nude photos?

by Anonymousreply 35April 3, 2018 5:50 AM

I'm assuming it was the 70's R35. And Playmen was an Italian magazine so possibly different rules.

by Anonymousreply 36April 3, 2018 5:53 AM

r35 they were "art photos" he did when he was in Italy wilding out without parental supervision. IIRC, they were not published in a major magazine, but in a smaller, Italian one that the photographer approached.

Plus as r36 says, it was the 70s.

by Anonymousreply 37April 3, 2018 5:55 AM

Hated it.

by Anonymousreply 38April 3, 2018 5:25 PM

Danny Boyle's directing is not working for this story.

by Anonymousreply 39April 4, 2018 1:07 AM

Where are the nude pics?

by Anonymousreply 40April 4, 2018 1:10 AM

I seem to remember that st least a few of the pics were reprinted way back when. It seems like they were side views, etc.

by Anonymousreply 41April 4, 2018 1:39 AM

I seem to recall that when the print edition of the December 14,1981 print issue of "People" magazine came out, it's story on J. Paul Getty III's overdose included one of the nude photos that had been taken of him several years before. In the one "People" published Getty was seated with his right leg crossed over his left knee. No genitalia or public hair was visible. The image was very chaste. Getty had closely-cropped hair in the photo. I saw another photo from the session somewhere else. It was a close-up where a shirtless Getty was leaving in toward the camera.

I'd have posted this days ago had DL allowed me access.

by Anonymousreply 42April 5, 2018 12:55 AM

I am a huge fan of Brendan Fraser and he is making this show for me. I love that he is acting again.

by Anonymousreply 43April 5, 2018 1:02 AM

Last week’s episode wasn’t as interesting.

by Anonymousreply 44April 16, 2018 12:15 AM

Looking forward to the show tonight.

by Anonymousreply 45April 16, 2018 12:23 AM

JP Getty was rumoured to be hung, being described by a friend as, "Eight inches in the pool." Sad he couldn't get it up.

by Anonymousreply 46April 16, 2018 12:27 AM

So much scatology last week. At least we saw Harris Dickinson’s ass.

by Anonymousreply 47April 16, 2018 12:28 AM

I went to Rome about 1994 and there were guys with machine guns everywhere. Every bank had one. And elsewhere. Also, a million different styles of military uniforms on guys, everywhere. I still have a collection of photos of the guys in their varied uniforms. I suspected there might be an election somewhere, but there were no protests.

by Anonymousreply 48April 16, 2018 12:40 AM

I find Luca Marinelli (Primo) hot as fuck

by Anonymousreply 49April 16, 2018 3:19 AM

Great episode tonight. I love the Stockholm syndrome and reverse Stockholm syndrome. Who couldn’t love that boy?

by Anonymousreply 50April 16, 2018 3:26 AM

So, are the gardener and butler having a Gay affair? Is this a bone thrown to the Gay community?

by Anonymousreply 51April 16, 2018 3:36 AM

Was that the gardener ?....I thought it was one of the sons.

by Anonymousreply 52April 16, 2018 3:38 AM

JPG’s girlfriend called him the gardener, I thought. No?

by Anonymousreply 53April 16, 2018 3:39 AM

I do think it’s sexy to walk around with a long rifle, speaking Italian, a bonus.

by Anonymousreply 54April 16, 2018 3:48 AM

What happened to the sluts? JPG’s side-gals?

by Anonymousreply 55April 16, 2018 4:57 AM

R55 he married the one he loved. Balthazar's mom.

by Anonymousreply 56April 16, 2018 5:16 PM

I've stuck with it but it's sloooooow moving

by Anonymousreply 57April 18, 2018 8:10 AM

by Anonymousreply 58April 22, 2018 12:22 AM

by Anonymousreply 59April 22, 2018 12:33 AM

Harris showed hole last week, didn’t he?

by Anonymousreply 60April 22, 2018 12:35 AM

R6, He resembled Bill Maher.

by Anonymousreply 61April 22, 2018 12:37 AM

TY. Oh, figures. I was looking 👀 forward to the show tonight 😡, now what to watch?🤫

by Anonymousreply 62April 22, 2018 12:39 AM

I bailed after the third episode. It's too drawn out and the subtitles are annoying.

by Anonymousreply 63April 22, 2018 1:02 AM

It’s so disappointing. I just gave up on it.

by Anonymousreply 64April 29, 2018 5:13 PM

I’m really enjoying it. I like the Italian scenes. Also, the depiction of clothes, hair, furniture of that era.

Sorry to see Brandon Fraser as a middle aged man. But, that happens to the best of us.

by Anonymousreply 65April 30, 2018 2:19 AM

Getty is apparently the model for Mr. Burns. I never thought there was a real life model for Mr. Burns, but there is, apparently.

by Anonymousreply 66April 30, 2018 3:04 AM

I had a dream last night. My late multimillionaire friend, a former owner of Ptown’s Boatslip, years ago had given me a briefcase full of invaluable items to hold for him, which I had stored in my employer’s vault for safekeeping, and I only just remembered and recovered it as part of my employment severance terms.

The dilemma was to return it to his heirs, or just secretly keep it? I loved the old guy but he could squeeze a quarter til the eagle screamed.

by Anonymousreply 67April 30, 2018 3:30 AM

Can I just say I think Swank is killing it. I know she gets flack, but she really is a good actress.

by Anonymousreply 68April 30, 2018 5:56 AM

Yeah, she's a very earnest actress and that works really well in some roles.

by Anonymousreply 69April 30, 2018 7:16 AM

I’m surprised this show isn't getting more attention here. It’s really well done, Brendan Fraser's weird direct camera address stuff aside. A thousand times more entertaining than anything Ryan Murphy's done in ages. Sutherland and Swank are killing it. Dickinson is adorable.

And the locales are gorgeous. I spent a lot of time in the mountain villages near Calabria as a boy, around this same time and they’re right on the money with the look and feel. And the danger. I was yellow-blond as a kid and I was forbidden to even go outside without one of my uncles or cousins.

by Anonymousreply 70May 5, 2018 1:13 AM

I admire that the twink showed hole.

by Anonymousreply 71May 5, 2018 1:15 AM

r66 Yeah, I kind of got that from the opening scenes where there was actually a "release the hounds" moment.

So do you think they're going to delve any further into the "love that dare not speak its name" between Bullimore/Khan and the gardener?

by Anonymousreply 72May 5, 2018 4:49 AM

When did the twink show hole?

by Anonymousreply 73May 6, 2018 5:30 AM

r68 I agree. Swank is a terrific actress. Drama is her forte.

by Anonymousreply 74May 6, 2018 5:36 AM

Where were there Getty gas stations? I never saw them on the East coast from NY to Florida in the 60s and 70s.

by Anonymousreply 75May 7, 2018 2:33 AM

Is the ear coming off next episode?

by Anonymousreply 76May 9, 2018 3:30 PM

He’s so pretty, I don’t want to see him get hurt!

BTW, one of the things I love most about this show is how much time we spend with the Calabrian characters. They’re fully formed characters, not just one-note bad guy kidnappers.

by Anonymousreply 77May 9, 2018 3:33 PM

Anyone else think the costumes are spot on? Those polyester dresses looked vintage and that old lady from the last episode with the socks and sandals. I knew that old lady!

by Anonymousreply 78May 9, 2018 3:55 PM

On the show, they were implying that JPII worked at a Getty station in California. In reality, he was living in San Francisco at the time (where he went to high school and college). I don't recall any Getty stations in the Bay Area and I lived there in that era. Wikipedia said it was a "Tidewater Oil" station, but I don't remember that either.

I do recall Getty gas stations in the northeast, however.

by Anonymousreply 79May 9, 2018 3:59 PM

R78 I think I spotted Gail (Hilary) wearing Pucci one episode. Completely agree about the costumes, I was a teen at the time and dying to dress like that

by Anonymousreply 80May 11, 2018 3:26 AM

The boy Francisco takes communion in his hands. Italy may be different about this, but I don’t think that practice started in the US until later. Not the 70s. Maybe the 90s. Seems like a mistake in the movie .

by Anonymousreply 81May 14, 2018 2:39 AM

And the ear is now gone!

by Anonymousreply 82May 14, 2018 4:53 PM

Has there been any more twink nudity?

by Anonymousreply 83May 14, 2018 4:55 PM

Without a doubt this is the slowest mini series ever.

by Anonymousreply 84May 14, 2018 6:32 PM

I really don't understand why DL isn't all over this. A fascinating story, beautifully shot, great performances. Men with daddy issues. Horrible people. That gorgeous piece of hotness, Harris Dickenson.

Offsite Link
by Anonymousreply 85May 15, 2018 12:48 AM

Harris is lovely, but I gave up on Trust. After he showed his ass, of course.

by Anonymousreply 86May 15, 2018 12:53 AM

This last episode was around 90% English subtitles, I rarely pay full attention to anything on TV so this episode was pretty much a waste for me. I am just not going to read a TV show.

by Anonymousreply 87May 15, 2018 1:08 AM

Is anyone doing a fact-checking thing like they did for the other recent fact-based miniseries?

by Anonymousreply 88May 15, 2018 1:13 AM

The last episode was like watching The Godfather. Except bad.

by Anonymousreply 89May 15, 2018 1:16 AM

My favorite thing, besides the visuals and the acting, is how everyone falls in love with Paul. And Harris Dickinsen is so good that you actually believe it.

by Anonymousreply 90May 15, 2018 1:28 AM

I miss Balty and the Sally Field Programme

by Anonymousreply 91May 15, 2018 1:29 AM

R85 I agree completely. The last ep, not Getty-centric at all, was one of my favorites.

by Anonymousreply 92May 15, 2018 3:54 AM

Getty was such an asshole. Sutherland is doing a great job because I loathe him.

How does the movie compare?

by Anonymousreply 93May 21, 2018 2:28 AM

Loathe Getty - not Sutherland lol

by Anonymousreply 94May 21, 2018 2:29 AM

I’m an episode behind, but do we know how accurate the scene where the boy cut off Paul's ear was? Not so much who did it, but was it Paul's idea?

I absolutely loved that episode. So well done and so moving. It makes me a little sad that no one seems to be watching this. And yet we had umpteen threads on that awful Andrew Cunanan series. I guess that’s how it goes sometime.

by Anonymousreply 95May 22, 2018 3:50 PM

sometimeS

by Anonymousreply 96May 22, 2018 4:38 PM

I'm loving Brenda Fraser in this. And I don't know why more people aren't watching -- must've cost a fortune to make it, what with big-name stars and so much location footage.

I hope we get some more of the incipient Bullimore/Khan-gardener romance in the finale.

by Anonymousreply 97May 22, 2018 5:19 PM

This show is fucking glorious! I can't remember the last time I enjoyed something this much that I didn't expect to fall in love with or even be interested in - I knew VERSACE would be at least decent, but this was a total surprise. Harris Dickinson is a major find and I will watch him in anything going forward - I already sought out BEACH RATS and found him riveting. A real breakout star.

Unfortunately, the ratings for this are abysmal so I get the feeling FX will only renew it if Boyle and Beaufoy are on board... I can't imagine a 1930s/1940s prequel about the rise to riches for Getty will be more appealing to demographics than this season is given the infamy of the kidnapping/ear incident and all.

I hope I'm wrong. Either way, bravo to all involved for getting this done so expertly. It's awesome.

by Anonymousreply 98May 22, 2018 6:24 PM

I agree. It's excellent. Everybody is terrific in the show - Sutherland, Fraser, Swank and the handsome Silas Carson.

by Anonymousreply 99May 23, 2018 3:14 AM

I assumed that it was a limited run series, not something that was going to have a season 2. Either way, it's not getting anywhere near the amount of love that it deserves.

by Anonymousreply 100May 23, 2018 3:16 AM

Loved it! I can’t wait to see the payback in the last episode.

by Anonymousreply 101May 23, 2018 3:25 AM

Frasier breaking through the fourth wall killed it for me as well as the long ass Italian dialogue. It didn't have the excitement or cultural references of Versace, which I loved.

by Anonymousreply 102May 23, 2018 3:28 AM

R66, the old man Rockefeller that just died is the model for Mr. Burns.

I haven't watched this yet, I was waiting to watch in one shot either when the network airs a marathon or when it hits Netflix. My stupid cable channel only has the last three eps up.

by Anonymousreply 103May 23, 2018 3:47 AM

This was such a good series. I really enjoyed it. The makers of this show have two more seasons already written. I do hope it gets picked up.

The finale was really good. I loved Bullimore's exit and meet up with Dennis. Those last lines they shared were perfect. It is unreal how one kidnapping pretty much catapulted a bunch of tribal petty criminals into what is today the most powerful organized crime group in the world (Ndrangheta).

One of the greatest parts of the finale was Getty's losing streak. The guy just couldn't handle things not going his way. Has anyone here been to the Getty museum? It was hilarious hearing how the reviewers universally panned the Getty museum opening. Was it that bad when it first opened? I know that today it is considered a world class museum.

by Anonymousreply 104May 29, 2018 10:37 PM

I’ve been to the Getty Museum in LA. It’s great. It was a long time ago, but I remember I enjoyed it.

by Anonymousreply 105May 29, 2018 11:03 PM

The finale was exquisite... the "golden shower" for Getty special effect was *SO* awesome. Unexpected and unbelievably effective (thus the poster design).

So sad nobody cares about this show... it was so good. Depressing people can't sit through subtitles (see: THE AMERICANS (also ending)).

Assume since FX didn't announce a renewal yet that this is all we're gonna get.

by Anonymousreply 106May 29, 2018 11:11 PM

r104 The Getty Museum that exists today is not the one depicted on the show. That's the OLD Getty, now known as the Getty Villa.

Has anyone found an episode-by-episode fact check on the series? I've seen a few articles, but most were kind of general.

I'm getting the DVD of "All the Money In the World" from Netflix this week; I'll be interested to compare them.

by Anonymousreply 109May 29, 2018 11:43 PM

Let us know how it compares, r109. I’m interested in seeing it now, if for no other reason than to see what sort of role can be played by both Brendan Fraser and Marky Mark.

by Anonymousreply 110May 29, 2018 11:54 PM

Beautiful ending to an amazing series. I will now have to watch All the Money..., but I can't imagine it being as good as this was.

by Anonymousreply 111May 30, 2018 3:38 AM

All the Money was a REAL snoozefest IMHO. I'm just catching up with this series now and agree with the others who say it's slow. I'm going to try to stick with it.

by Anonymousreply 112May 30, 2018 5:12 PM

R112 you won't be sorry. I loved this along with some of you and really appreciated the character development: not just for Getty, Paul III, and Gail, but others involved in the situation.

Agree w/R110 re Fraser and MM--I thought Fraser was marvelous in this, and I can't imagine MM can even come close.

I hope it gets picked up too. And I loved the bit with Primo and young Francesco in the finale.

by Anonymousreply 113May 30, 2018 9:21 PM

The stuff with the Calabrese was my favorite. They nailed that time and place.

by Anonymousreply 114May 30, 2018 10:16 PM

They found some great Italian actors, too.

by Anonymousreply 115May 31, 2018 1:44 AM

[quote]thought Fraser was marvelous in this, and I can't imagine MM can even come close.

The character take was completely different, though. That's not a Mark decision, but a script decision. "All the Money in the World"s Chase was more of a stereotypical fixer - a man who knew everyone and everything, "Trust"s Chase was Columbo with a cowboy hat.

by Anonymousreply 116June 3, 2018 11:25 PM

I am watching this and I am obviously an uneducated hick from a trailer park because I had heard of NONE of this before. I am riveted and have done much googling as I am watching it.

also, brendan frasier? could still get it.
