This show is so dreadful that it's good. I'll admit I watched several episodes on Netflix a few months back when I was stuck at home with the flu. It looks like it's filmed on a two dollar budget and feels like a really poorly crafted Dr. Quinn knockoff. One of the glaring issues beyond the bad writing and stiff acting, is the fact that the clothes and hairstyles are way too contemporary. I don't see the point of doing a historically based show if you can't be bothered to pay attention to details. I don't think polyester had caught on in the 19th century, and Daniel Lissing's non-Mountie wardrobe looks like they just removed the GAP labels.

The real reason to watch the show is for Daniel Lissing who is hot as fuck.

Isn't it something of an open secret that Daniel is gay? I've read that he has been seen about in Vancouver's Davie Village when they are shooting When Calls the Heart, and while there are rumors about him and Erin Krakow (mostly a PR stunt) he's never seen with women.

I haven’t watched this but I do watch Hallmark movies - they are cheesy as hell and so predictable but I like the message and it’s nice to watch something positive.

I could be that he does have a girlfriend but keeps her out of his photos to avoid freaky fan girls from attacking her?

Daniel Lissing decided not to renew his contract with the show and his character was killed off in the season 5 finale.

I don't watch TV - but expanded the picture. They almost look deformed. Potato heads - is this what people think is attractive these days?

R22 Lissing stated in this interview that he decided to leave for "personal reasons." So either he's pulling a Dan Stevens and thinking that having to commit to a tv series hinders his ability to have a film career OR he's going into rehab.

I know someone who works on this show. She said the producers wanted a contemporary setting and timeline but the CBC decided they had too many modern shows and wanted a period piece instead. Didn't matter that it cost more to do a period show but the CBC wanted that and paid for it.

R25 Well considering the show is based on the book When Calls the Heart and that CBC owns the Canadian broadcast rights but doesn't actually pay the show's budget not sure how accurate this statement is.

This show is bible-thumpy, fundie, bullshit. As is everything on the Hallmark Channel. Every time I see an ad for this show, I wonder to what kind of Frau-tactic audience it would appeal.

R31 as others have said in this thread, he's 36 never married and none of his social media ever picture him with a girl that isn't family or a co-worker.

I follow him on social media too (think he's handsome, have never seen the stupid show). Gonna go with not gay. Australians have a very fratty but heterosexual "mate" culture (its origins in being a penal colony and all) and he and his friends just look typical of it.

It's very odd that Lissing would just decide to leave rather than renew his contract. According to a post on his Instagram he has no idea what the future holds and no future plans! Actors don't typically walk away from a stable gig unless they are fired for various reasons, have a budding film career or have a lot of offers coming in, or because of drama behind the scenes (e.g. not getting on with producers). Other people have suggested maybe he's getting treatment for drugs or other addiction issues, but there would be no reason for him to leave the show. They could have pushed back production on season 6 if need be to allow him more time to get treatment. There doesn't appear to any onset drama with his co-stars at least, just odd and probably a bad career move on his part.

I only just saw this on Netflix and sampled it last night. HOLY FUCK . BAD.

Also how could anyone compare it to fucking outlander? Outlander is more violent than Game of Thrones.

I did catch Outlander on Netflix yesterday, and Jamie's hot. I was hoping to see more leg, and surely he's not only good looking man they could've dressed in a kilt, but it was at least watchable.

R5 The most hardcore episode of "When calls the Heart" featured a missing plank of wood and a plucky orphan stuck in a mineshaft.

The tamest episode of Outlander featured two main characters bleeding heavily from the genitals and a plucky orphan getting raped by a sociopath.

It makes Dr. Quinn look like Game of Thrones. I'd never heard of it until Lori got fired. The #hearties were devastated
