Most latinos/latinas are of mixed ancestry so I'd say person of color. Plus she's got a darker olive skin tone as well.

The White latin people I'd say come from areas like Argentina & other parts of S America where a lot of europeans reside or immigrated to. POC would come from central America, Mexico & the caribbean areas like the Dominicas because of old slave routes & the native Indian populations of those regions. Race is looked at differently in Latin parts of the world so it often depends on your social status and what you look like but color is not treated the same way as in the United States for instance.

In fact, when I moved to the US I had a hard time understanding the American concept of race because I just didn't think about it as much as here. But there are some countries in Latin AMerica now having a turbulent time with race like Brazil where there's blatant discrimination occurring between the darker poor and the whiter rich.

In terms of racial profiling would you say she is brown just like Indians from south Asia ?

I would say definitely POC, particularly as a first generation Puerto-Rican growing up in the Bronx. Trust me, she was treated as a POC in New York in the 70's and 80's. Puerto Ricans are not considered white in New York.

In other areas of the country with fewer Latinos, then she may not have actually been perceived as POC - just 'tanned'. Seriously.

R8, not the OP, but I do find the American concept of race fascinating. Back when and where I grew up, we were taught at school that there are three races - Mongoloid, Europeoid, and Negroid. Only here on DL have I learned that race has so many subtones like ‘White Latino’ and ‘Black Latino’ and that the only Europeans considered white are Northern Europeans (the ones who used to be called ‘Aryans,’ I think). As I said, fascinating!

I don't think she had a nose job. Whenever she gets a close up on a movie or tv show, she has the same wider nose as always. I think it's good makeup and lighting that makes her nose look slimmer. The same for most celebrities. The contouring and lighting makes celeb noses look thin and perfect. Have you ever seen Channing Tatum without good lighting? He has a pretty wide nose for a white guy.

Back in the glorious '90's Vanity Fair magazine was a spectacular forum for everything, particularly in its celebrity profiles, one of which profiled Jenny when she'd made her *acting* debut in the film "Selena."

VF's profile on Jenny was accompanied by an 'artsy' pictorial on her, all artsy Black-and-White photos. In one of the more memorable photos, she has her back turned to the photographer, looking over her shoulder to the camera. It was a full-body shot. She was attired in only underwear and stilettos. Her ass was huuuuuge, unbelievably huuuuge.

Speaking as a Latino - J-Lo is a POC. She, like most Puerto Ricans, is a mix of Spanish (European) and black, with possibly a touch of Native ancestry. Her skin and her features (and her hair, back before she started straightening and dyeing it) make that clear. She's not a white woman.

One of the things that confuses a lot of Americans about Latinos is that most of the Latinos in the US are, or are the descendants of, for lack of a better word, peasants. In Latin countries that carries with it a connotation of non-whiteness. There are plenty of white, European Mexicans - but those people are largely still in Mexico. They are mostly middle and upper class and have no need to immigrate to the US. The Mexicans in the US are largely mestizo (Native and Spanish mixed) - in other words, they are POC. That's not the case for every Mexican in Mexico. And it is a similar situation for most Latin American countries. There are many white Cubans here because those who left around the time of the revolution were the wealthy and well-connected, and those people were mostly white. For the most part, Latin countries have had members of their poorer, browner populations immigrate here, while the wwhites stayed home.

Also confusing for Americans is the tendency for some (obviously) mixed-race Latinos to insist that they are 'white Hispanics' on paperwork or just Spanish, no acknowledgment of their Native or black ancestry. This is just plain old self-loathing/internalized racism for most.

Obsessively labeling people based on skin color and other physical characteristics is pointless, immature, and inherently racist in and of itself.

Latinos are an ethnicity and they come in all races.

Most of the latino in the Caribbean have afro carribean mixtures, those in Mexico and Central America more native indian mixture. If coast is on the Caribbean the country was touched by the slave trade if facing the pacific ocean only it was not.

This is basic geography that is taught in middle school or 9th grade.
