Amy Grant, 80s icon
Wish she was on Idol instead of annoying Katy Perry.
Anyway these are quite depressing lyrics:
I see her as a little girl
Hiding in her room
She takes another bath
And she sprays her mama's perfume
To try to wipe away
The scent he left behind
But it haunts her mind
You see, she's his little rag
Nothing more than just a waif
And he's mopping up his need
She is tired and afraid
Maybe she'll find a way
Through these awful years
To disappear

Those are really sad / tragic lyrics.
I to think Amy Grant has a very pleasant voice.

Jamee Stein (Jme Stein?) from her Baby, Baby and Good For Me videos aged very nicely.

I dislike Amy Grant because she set out to steal Vince Gill from his wife and finally succeeded. Some Christian.

She’s singing about old creepy evangelical conservative men aka sick perverts.
Good for her.

OP: Ask Me is a wonderful song from the Heart In Motion album. To my understanding, Amy wrote that about a friend of hers who overcame sexual abuse, long before the current social movement.

Amy!
Amy Grant!
She comes home from church
She takes off her pants
That's what I like about Amy Grant
When she comes home from church
She gotta take of her pants
That's what I like about Amy Grant
I'm talking about Amy...Amy...AMY, huuh!
Amy Grant!
And those songs she writes
And Lordy the way she sings
Too bad her fans don't care about such little things
She don't spare the child
She don't spoil the rod
She just gets rich cause she works for God
I'm talking about Amy...Amy...AMY
Amy Grant!
Now when she first met Jesus
Didn't know what to say
But he gave her a guitar
And told her what to play
He said, "Amy don't you play no modern jazz
Don't you play none of that hard rock
What the people want to hear is pure unadulterated schlock"
I'm talking to Amy...Amy...AMY, huuh!
Amy Grant!
Amy!
Amy Grant!
Alone in bed
Late at night
She fantasizes about Barry White
Barry!
Barry White!
Barry!
Barry White!
Talking about Amy...Amy...AMY
Amy Grant!

I believe they're Republicans but I doubt they are Trump supporters.

Amy Grant is more of a 1990's icon. She had her first big solo hit (her biggest hit, period) in 1991, Baby, Baby, my favorite by her, and a slew of hits afterwards.

Her biggest hit, Baby, baby went to #1 for 2 weeks.

She also sang on Peter Cetera's #1 hit in 1986, The Next Time I Fall.
Her 1988 Lead Me On album is superb. Quite a sombre album, some great songwriting by Amy and she also sings songs by Jimmy Webb and Janis Ian (!).

r20 I think Vince suffers from depression. I saw him and Amy in concert a few years ago and he told a story about his father and you could sense his pain, but even throughout the entire performance you could sense he suffered from demons. He has an amazing voice.
Their Christmas shows in Nashville are worth seeing.

I don't think the Gills are wingers. The Westboro asswipes came after them a few years ago on account of the divorce, and Gill confronted a bunch of them when they were protesting outside one of his concerts. Nearly came to fisticuffs, if memory serves.
Besides, Vinnie is buddies with such good lefties as Emmylou, Dolly and Rosanne Cash, and he replaced the late Glenn Frey in the Eagles, so he's jake with me.

She was hardly an "icon" outside of the Christian music/bookstore sets. In the 1980's - she rose to prominence within the realm of "Christian Rock" performers - vomit inducing, I know... My crazed, obnoxious Pentecostal parents loved her and praised her talent as a "Christian" artist, but were quite dismayed when she made the transition from Christian to "secular" music. Yeah, that is how a lot of evangelicals speak. LOL Her 90's pop ballads were as lame and forgettable as her Christian bookstore albums, IMO. I guess that I can respect her business savvy to release a few bubble gum/innocent/benign songs to top 40 radio and make a few bucks for a change (I seriously doubt that she raked in a whole lot singing at Pentecostal churches, but who knows - Christians have sticky fingers and are great with guiltiing some bucks out of other stupid Christians). She is generally forgettable in every way.

I saw an interview with Vince Gill one time where he was talking about what a great cook Amy Grant is and how she is always in the kitchen. I forget who the interviewer was but there eyes were looking at him, like yeah we can see that you must really like her cooking.

I still listen to Lead Me On and The Collection frequently. Heart In Motion was everywhere for awhile but it hasn't aged well. Anyone know what Amy Grant and Cher have in common? The both recorded the song The Power.

House of Love is my favorite of her albums. But with her songs on Behind the Eyes and it's follow-up, Simple Things, she reveals a lot of the internal struggles she went through after her divorce and the subsequent fallout in her career. I think she's accepted that she'll always carry that burden but knows she needs to keep moving forward. On the Simple Things album, her song "Out in the Open" has these lines, which I think expresses that:
For the sake of never making waves
I kept my secrets to myself
And no one ever really knew
The darker shadows of my heart
But I will be a witness
That there's nothing in me dark enough
The power of forgiveness
Cannot rescue from the deep
So I'm standing here spinning round
In the fields of freedom
And I'm still alive and reaching out
And I can feel the healing

I saw her at the Lincoln Theatre in DC in the early 80's (I went to a Baptist high school and girlfriend was all the rage in that crowd.) I kind of got dragged to it, but she really was wonderful.

R24, I also remember her as just being a “Christian rock” singer. As it was explained to us at Christian school, the rhythms of rock and roll mimicked the rhythm of sex, and that’s why it was so sinful. We had no idea! But if Christians made that kind of music, it was okay because the message was praising Jesus.
Evie was another musician that the evangelicals were allowed to listen to.
