Has there been any explanation for the recasting? So far I think all of the other characters who've been brought back have been played by the original actors.

According to behind the scenes gossip from Showtime's Queer As Folk he was quite a douche who couldn't deal with making out with another guy on camera. That's why he was written out at the start of the second season.

R6 Yes the cast of QAF (mostly Hal Sparks) have hinted that Chris Potter was a homophobic douche. Potter once said in an interview with MSNBC about QAF: "As soon as they say 'cut,' you spit. You want to go to a strip bar or touch the makeup girls. You feel dirty. It's a tough job." Though Hal Sparks once said that kissing other guys for QAF was like making out with a dog soo......

I saw an interview with Ron Cowen somewhere on YouTube from 3 or 4 years ago, where he hinted that the real problem was that Hal Sparks and Potter did not get along at all and it was creating a great deal of tension on the set. Hal's character was vital to the show, Potter's wasn't so Potter was written out and then they added Robert Gant to the show.

As for the recasting on Will & Grace, Potter starts on a Canadian show called Heartland, so maybe he just wasn't available to do a guest spot?

Cheyenne is a good 15 years younger than Potter, so it really doesn't work.

Vis-à-vis this casting, they've made a mistake.

I must be the only person on the planet who doesn't find Cheyenne Jackson attractive. He does absolutely nothing for me.

Chris Potter later claimed that his "you spit" comment was sarcasm towards the interviewer for asking what Potter considered a homophobic question and that it was printed in a way to make Potter look anti-gay.

Didn't the UK version of Chris Potter's character also leave the story at the end of his arc?

If they couldn't get Potter back due to lack of availability, or if they didn't want him back, or regardless of the reason, they should have done a lot better with re-casting. As someone else upthread pointed out, Jackson is far too young for the role of Michael. Chris Potter was very effective in his brief appearance in season 1 as Michael. They should have gone with an older, more handsome actor, but they went with what they regarded as stunt casting, even though Cheyenne Jackson isn't that big of a deal. I know that sounds bitch (hey it's DL) but this was a total misfire.

Jackson is too big a bottom to play opposite bottom Will.

I thought Cheyenne casting as Michael was very "on the nose" with all that self affirming "be happy" New Age philosophy going on in his real life.

Sidenote: Potter did the voice of Gambit on the Xmen animated series, using a Cajun accent.

The jokes have gotten too smutty in this reboot. Playing to the cheap seats too often.
