Ha, I was about to create a thread about this movie (1985) just yesterday but had no idea what to include in the link because it just premiered at SXSW and there's no trailer anywhere, apart from the short from two years ago. I heard good things about it, if anyone's interested.
by Anonymous | reply 4 | March 15, 2018 10:29 PM |
I had never heard of him but dear god he is adorable. More power to him.

Who cares ?, he will end up with a woman.
by Anonymous | reply 6 | March 15, 2018 10:30 PM |
He pinged to me hard on Gotham where he played (is still playing?) Ed Nygma opposite the out gay actor Robin Lord Taylor. I was certain he was out already, but I guess not.
by Anonymous | reply 7 | March 15, 2018 10:32 PM |
He does sort of ping for me in the Ben Whishaw “I always play fragile characters” manner.

He was absolutely terrific in Olive Kittredge. I think it may only have been that one scene in the car, but it really stayed with me.

Bye, r19.

I have to agree about his acting in OLIVE KITTREDGE. First thing I saw him in...he was great. And my type..tall kind of dorky. with dark hair ..dark eyes.
by Anonymous | reply 25 | March 16, 2018 12:33 AM |
Brilliant in Olive Kitteredge. That’s scene in the car with Frances McDormand is shattering.
by Anonymous | reply 26 | March 16, 2018 1:57 AM |
He's adorable. I love him as The Riddler on Gotham. I've suspected him being gay for a while now, whenever I said it people just replied that he has had girlfriends in the past. Coming out as queer (bi) makes sense now.
Now to the most important question: Is he a top or bottom? Who's had him?
by Anonymous | reply 27 | March 16, 2018 12:01 PM |
I love the bi male Wave
by Anonymous | reply 28 | March 16, 2018 2:04 PM |
Does queer = bi?
I thought it was what "people who don't believe in labels" call gay.

I was into it until those twig legs at r11
by Anonymous | reply 30 | March 16, 2018 3:07 PM |
On some thread probably 3 years ago we had a poster insist that he was queer/bi but just not out yet. I absolutely believed it because he pings to high heaven. Anyway, another DL scoop, though so long ago I doubt we could even prove it.
God bless you, R10.
by Anonymous | reply 31 | March 16, 2018 3:09 PM |
And one more time the great DL question: Who is this guy anyway?
by Anonymous | reply 32 | March 16, 2018 3:24 PM |
R32 Do you not watch tv? He's an actor, he plays The Riddler on Gotham.
by Anonymous | reply 33 | March 16, 2018 3:28 PM |
R33 I don't watch the right tv shows it seems.
by Anonymous | reply 34 | March 16, 2018 3:29 PM |
Who, watching The Riddler, did not think Cory was gay?
by Anonymous | reply 35 | March 16, 2018 3:32 PM |
R29 To me it depends, some people use queer to mean gay, others to mean bi, others again use queer even if they're mostly straight and just want to seem edgy or whatever. I think Cory falls into the second category, he has been in relationships with women, they could have been beards, but they seemed real. At the same time I really do believe he's into men too (come on, it's kinda obvious, he pings hard).
by Anonymous | reply 36 | March 16, 2018 3:34 PM |
You're right OP he does have nice tits. Damn. Love him on Gotham!
by Anonymous | reply 37 | March 16, 2018 3:37 PM |
R35 I have suspected it for a while, but when I mentioned it to someone else they said no, that he's straight and that he's had girlfriends. I guess queer (in this case I think it means bi) makes sense. However, I don't think this is another case of a straight guy queerbaiting. He specifically talked about coming out to his family, so he's probably at the very least bi. I don't think his family was accepting at first. His coming out seemed very painful:
[Quote]He says his family handled his coming out with “a lot of love,” though it took “a lot of time.”
by Anonymous | reply 38 | March 16, 2018 3:44 PM |
Not surprised.
by Anonymous | reply 39 | March 16, 2018 3:45 PM |
This quote from the interview hit me hard.
[Quote]He tears up while recounting how, while shooting, he kept a book of photos of men who were dying at that time, men who were just like Adrian. Who, had he been born then, could have been him.
by Anonymous | reply 40 | March 16, 2018 3:46 PM |
What girls has he dated before? Before he deleted his IG, it was all guys...
by Anonymous | reply 41 | March 16, 2018 4:03 PM |
R41 One was Emilia Clarke
by Anonymous | reply 42 | March 16, 2018 4:10 PM |
When did he delete his Instagram? What happened?
by Anonymous | reply 43 | March 16, 2018 4:11 PM |
I still see his instagram. It's corymichaelsmith. Lots of people congratulating him.
by Anonymous | reply 44 | March 16, 2018 4:15 PM |
R44 He clearly has Instagram now, but at one point he apparently deleted it. I want to know why, what happened?
by Anonymous | reply 45 | March 16, 2018 4:17 PM |
Yea he deleted an older one that was much more gay - I think when he was hired for Gotham, he scrubbed his old social media. His current twitter runs non-stop so someone from his PR team must be running it...
by Anonymous | reply 46 | March 16, 2018 4:19 PM |
r44 where are people congratulating him? In the comments? I hate IG...
r42 The only evidence of him dating her was a sketchy NYP Page Six publicity plant claiming they were slow dancing at a Vanity Fair party. Also, they were in a play together at the time.
I'm calling bullshit on the whole "bi" thing - he looks gay as fuck anyway.
I fear this whole "queer" thing may be a new way for actors, etc. to keep their female fans happy and avoid the stigma of gay or even bisexual. Queer can mean anything or nothing hence just another form of the closet...
by Anonymous | reply 47 | March 16, 2018 4:24 PM |
OMG those IG comments are insane - who actually takes the time to comment on some celebrity account that he will never read?
by Anonymous | reply 48 | March 16, 2018 4:27 PM |
[quote]who actually takes the time to comment on some celebrity account that he will never read?
Maybe the same type of people who post and comment on anonymous gay message boards.
by Anonymous | reply 49 | March 16, 2018 4:30 PM |
I wonder why none of the gay media have picked up on this? You would think the daily beast would be promoting this article like crazy as a celebrity coming out story rather than burying the lede in a mediocre PRish movie review.
by Anonymous | reply 50 | March 16, 2018 4:31 PM |
r47 We had that conversation in Lee Pace's "coming out" thread and while I happen to agree with you completely, it still seems better than a full-on closet. It's a compromise of sorts.
r48 Celebs read their IG comments all the time, especially if they're B-list and below. What the hell do you think those people do all day when they aren't shooting?
by Anonymous | reply 51 | March 16, 2018 4:31 PM |
r50 The Daily Beast didn't cover Lee Pace's story so I don't see why they would cover Cory, who also came out as queer but is below Pace on the celeb totem pole.
by Anonymous | reply 52 | March 16, 2018 4:34 PM |
At least Joey Pollari didn't pull this half-ass queer shit though I would almost expect him too after reading his twitter - he is PC as fuck.
by Anonymous | reply 53 | March 16, 2018 4:35 PM |
I will give Cory credit for actually giving some details and backstory about his coming out to family and acknowledging the reality of HIV/AIDS for gay men. He doesn't seem to be using "queer" as a shield like that pussy Lee Pace. Though that bit about keeping pictures of men who died from AIDS is kind of creepy...
by Anonymous | reply 54 | March 16, 2018 4:43 PM |
For the most part Cory seems legitimately bi, and not "six months away from finally admitting I was gay all along" bi.
by Anonymous | reply 55 | March 16, 2018 4:45 PM |
r55 we will never know but that fake Page Six story makes me doubt he really is into women - if he was really dating a woman, his people would never have had to plant such a fake bearding story like that...That was such a transparently bad cover job. And Emilia could land a much hotter guy than Cory.
by Anonymous | reply 56 | March 16, 2018 4:55 PM |
Sorry he's got gayface, he's not bi, he gay.
by Anonymous | reply 57 | March 16, 2018 5:15 PM |
R51 You're right, Cory said this on Twitter. He clearly reads tweets and probably Instagram comments too.
[Quote]y’all tweeting #loveforCMS are giving me LIFE 🙌🏻 thanks for showing up with all that kindness and generosity 🤙🏻 i’m a lucky fella ✌🏻
by Anonymous | reply 58 | March 16, 2018 6:27 PM |
The recent plot point on Gotham about Oswald crushing on Edward was kind of touching. Of course, Nygma will PAY!!! for not returning the sentiment. Penguin is such a bossy bottom.
by Anonymous | reply 59 | March 16, 2018 6:35 PM |
R52 He acknowledged that one of those guys who died of AIDS could have been him, like he acknowledged he sleeps with men. Would I have wished he came out as gay (or bi, if that's what he is)? Sure, but you can't always get what you want. Coming out at all while on a popular show on tv is huge imo. He's not closeted anymore, if he wants to date a guy and be public about it, he can. PS: Cory is a bigger star than Lee these days, isn't Lee living on a farm? Cory is on a popular show on tv, can't really compare the too. Also, I think Lee pissed off a lot of the community by the way he came out, maybe that's why they didn't cover it. I think they should cover Cory's coming out, which was very moving if you read the article. My only pet peeve about it is the word he used, but whatever, it is what it is.
by Anonymous | reply 60 | March 16, 2018 6:40 PM |
Love him on Gotham. Could it be the first time that two (openly) gay / bi / queer men play love interests on a TV show?
by Anonymous | reply 61 | March 16, 2018 6:44 PM |
Who the fuck works for Queerty? Smith "maybe" came out? He literally promotes that article on Twitter and Instagram, he thanked his fans for supporting him. For gods sake he talks about his own coming out! Yet Queerty says he "maybe probably" came out?! WHAAAT?!
by Anonymous | reply 62 | March 16, 2018 7:55 PM |
Whoever P.R. asshole advising these guys to use "queer" needs to be drawn and quatered? What timid cowards these actors are.
by Anonymous | reply 63 | March 16, 2018 7:59 PM |
R63 At least Smith talked about coming out to his family, and he said one of those who died of AIDS could have been him, he basically all but said he sleeps with men. What more do you want? This is NOT like Pace's cryptic and timid coming out. If you read the article it's clear Smith's coming out was sincere and well done., talking about his own experiences, even admitting that his family wasn't as accepting as first. However, I do wish he would have used the word bi if that's what he is. I hate the word queer.
by Anonymous | reply 65 | March 16, 2018 8:10 PM |

R69 Do straight allies come out to their families? I'm guessing not.

He's about as "queer" as Ezra Miller. And Billie Joe.
by Anonymous | reply 73 | March 16, 2018 9:32 PM |
R73 What are you implying? He came out to his family, he's at least bi imo.
by Anonymous | reply 74 | March 16, 2018 9:33 PM |
You seem to have a lot invested in this "coming out", R74.
You must be the Everyone Is Bi Troll. "The new Bi Male Wave! Whee!"
by Anonymous | reply 75 | March 16, 2018 9:35 PM |
R75 Nope, he might be bi or gay, I have no idea. All I know is he's not straight, he has sex with men. That's all I need to know. Though I do wish he wouldn't use the word queer, not a huge fan of it.
by Anonymous | reply 76 | March 16, 2018 9:38 PM |
Some “mostly straight “ dudes identify as queer.
by Anonymous | reply 77 | March 16, 2018 10:05 PM |
Queerty is pure troll bait these days...especially its obsession with straight men.
by Anonymous | reply 78 | March 16, 2018 10:14 PM |
R77 I know that, as I have said a million times before; I just don't think it's the case here. Usually "mostly straight" men don't come out as queer to their families. I wouldn't be surprised at all if he said he was bi or gay when he came out to them, or maybe he didn't use a label, maybe he just said he was attracted to both (or just guys if he's gay). I have a feeling this "queer" stuff is new, even to him, and yes, it's so he can protect his career but be out at the same time.
by Anonymous | reply 79 | March 16, 2018 10:31 PM |
Why just dont say bi ? It seem like is a hard word to say these days...

by Anonymous | reply 86 | March 17, 2018 6:18 PM |

by Anonymous | reply 87 | March 17, 2018 7:13 PM |
What does it even mean? "Queer" could be kinky, poly, doesn't like commitment ("aromantic"), furry, into vore, can-only-fuck-in-orange-rooms, and the list goes on. "Queer" is such a pathetic, cowardly non-word.

Maybe because coming out as 'queer' can literally mean anything? And, as such, it also means nothing. Just take a gander at all the posts here trying to decipher what he's actually saying. How can you blame people for not understanding what you have 'come out' as when the word you choose can literally mean anything?

Cory could do SO much better. Then again.. that's his type I guess. Kinda looks like Robin a bit. Robin is cuter though. Cory is like a 7 or 8 (more cute than hot). The guy who took the pic is like a 2, or 3 on a good day.

He can call himself what he wants but it's totally anachronistic and offensive and a distortion of history to describe gays and the gay experience in 1985 as "queer" (the film is described as a "queer film" in the article). Gay men in 1985 would not have called themselves "queer" and what "queer" means now (to the extent that it means anything) is a concept that did not exist in 1985.
by Anonymous | reply 119 | August 29, 2018 10:11 AM |

Spoiler...
XXXXXX
XXXXX
Gay guy in (shocking) 1985 is dying of AIDS. He goes home for his last Christmas (without telling his family he's dying). Mom, stereotypical rough dad, possibly also gay tween brother. The girl is the girl mom always wanted him to marry. He had a partner, but...dead. The girl is the only one he tells. He leaves a tape for his little brother, telling him to be strong and to be himself. These are broad stroaks, but it's a very touching, well done movie. I cried.
Bias: I also had an older brother who died (in a crash, not AIDS) and the last time my family was all together was Christmas. So...you can say I related.

by Anonymous | reply 126 | August 29, 2018 2:50 PM |
r119 have you seen the movie? How does he use the word "queer "in the film?
I don't see anyone associated with the film, includiing Smith, saying he's claiming people identified as queer as an identity in the same way today or a badge of protest (or his character is), any more than when we talk about gay people in the 18th century we don't use the word "homosexual" because it wasn't popular to say the word gay as an identity.
When queer nation started in 1990, they weren't pullinq queer out of nowhere. I remember it being used in films and even in Chess (1984) not clearly as a pejorative - not flattering but not positive.

R125 Nope, never said that. I would like some gay PDA though. It's a gay movie after all. I find it hypocritical that they had the gay guy make out with a woman yet couldn't show him kiss any guys. He's yet another gay character in name only. I'm so sick of this shit. Lesbian characters constantly get to make out and have sex, why can't gay male characters?

R119 it was 6 months ago. I don’t remember specific dialogue.
R125 it’s about a dying man going home to the middle of Texas to say goodbye to his family. Would you be trolling for dick at a time like that? The girl kisses him because a) she doesn’t know he’s gay and b) doesn’t know he’s dying. It doesn’t get far.
He tells her everything, including about his already-dead partner.

Yet this is being marketed in some places as a "queer movie". It would be nice to have a gay movie with a positive storyline (they don't all have to be about AIDS) and some gay guy PDA.
R127, the Buzzfeed article describes it as "queer", and Smith coming out as "queer" reinforces that angle. When Queer Nation started in 1990 they were using queer to mean gay, as in homo. Today "queer" is used to mean "anyone who doesn't identify as straight regardless of their actual sexuality, including trans, non-binary, incels, intersex, etc.", based on the bs of "queer theory".

Robin Lord Taylor was Billy Eichner's best friend and roommate in college. They're still friends but haven't worked together yet, as far as I know.

Cory Michael Smith looks like the love child of Eddie Redmayne and Marilyn Manson.

Shocking that a movie called 1985 is A) about AIDS and B) sad

R133 What's shocking is having a GAY movie about AIDS not feature any gay sex or even gay PDA. You know how people got AIDS, right? Talk about missing the mark. I'd say The Normal Heart is a much better portrayal of the AIDS crisis in the gay community. And yes, I know 1985 is a movie about a man accepting his diagnosis and finding the guts to tell his parents, but they could've still managed to portray a relationship or something with ya know... kissing or even sex (since this is about AIDS after all). IMO the movie would have made more sense and had more of an impact if it portrayed the gay life back then realistically and honestly instead of cowardly not showing anything. They managed to have the gay character kiss a woman though! LOL of course. Why not.

Why don't you whiners make your own movie?

Actually R134
spoiler...

He doesn't tell his parents, he just makes amends with them. But yeah, argue with the person who has seen the movie.
His partner is dead, he knows he is also dying, he's seeing his family for THE LAST TIME. What a shock he isn't trying to get laid!

R136 Fuck off you stupid shill. They could have shown him in a flashback or something. YOU are the reason movies like this keep getting made. Gay movies with no PDA. This is the future. You should be happy.

Go to a gay film festival R137. You'll see plenty of PDA and probably get kicked out for masturbating in the theater.

R126 He's supposed to be 6 feet even. How is that freakishly tall?

R138 There's a difference between depicting gay PDA realistically and honestly and not depicting anything at all. I never said I wanted to see nudity. I know it's not porn. I would however have liked to see a kiss or something. A gay kiss that is, I know there's a straight kiss in it. BTW, would you say The Normal Heart (movie) is porn? Since that movie portrayed gay sex? Apparently to you all gay sex equals porn. You're the one with a dirty mind here, not me. I know relationships involve sex, so why not include it? Especially in a movie with AIDS. There are a ton of ways they could show (or at the very least imply) a sex scene without being too explicit. I would have even been happy with a typical dressing off clothes, then cut of to two guys in bed together or something to that extent. It would have been amazing to see the relationship between Adrian and his now dead boyfriend in a flashback. But nope, instead the movie has no gay PDA at all.

The movie ultimately is about the two brothers R140. And his relationship with his family over all.

R110 I don't think Drake Bell could look up from his phone/Twitter feed/guitar long enough to bother.

1985 is a brilliant movie in every aspect. CMS was one of producers as well.

Do people outside of college towns and the two coasts understand that the word "queer" is like kike, nigger and spic? A pejorative, hateful slur?

Straight ally is queer too? I didn't realize. That's odd. I'm an ally to groups that I don't appropriate the identity of. In fact, appropriating might be something an ally is careful to avoid doing.
