Huge Special Election Today in Pennsylvania; Referendum on Trump

Dem Connor Lamb leads. The district went to Trump. The Repug, Rick Saccone is a fucking nut. I mean EXTREMELY nuts, a fucking Christian terrorist.

...

Richard Saccone (born February 14, 1958) is an American politician, author, and veteran serving in the Pennsylvania House of Representatives. He represents the state's 39th district and is a Republican. He is the Republican nominee for the 18th congressional district special election, which will be held on March 13, 2018.

Saccone is critical of welfare spending and is considered a budget hawk. He supports cuts to K-12 education, childhood education programs, public libraries, child welfare, and other state programs in order to pay back the federal government's debt.[2][3][4] This drew attention and accusations of hypocrisy by his opponent, Conor Lamb, when in February 2018 an investigation from The Intercept showed that Saccone spent excessive amounts on his own legislative expense account, which is funded by taxpayers, at a much greater rate than other lawmakers. The investigation also showed that Saccone spent money on a real estate company owned by a campaign donor.[2] Saccone is a social conservative[5] aligned with the Christian right.[6] His views have been described as dominionist,[7][8] a Christian nationalist ideology that seeks to institute a nation governed by conservative Christians based on their personal understandings of biblical law.[7][8]

Saccone's special election is attracting national attention, and is seen by many political analysts and commentators as a bellweather on the popularity of the Republican party, Trump's taxes on foreign-made steel and aluminum imports, and the 2018 House election. [9][10][11][12][13] Saccone has purposely stoked this portrayal, calling himself "Trump before Trump was Trump" and the special election a referendum on the Presidency of Donald Trump.[14][15][16]

In March 2018, an article from The Guardian accused Saccone of misleading voters in the 2018 about his diplomacy work in North Korea.[17]

The latest poll gives Conor Lamb a slight edge over Rick Saccone.

The poll was from Monmouth University, which often leans Republican, so it could be a positive sign for Lamb.

Rare picture of Saccone without his toupee.

Lamb supports Trump's tariff plan. He also opposed gun control on assault weapons after Parkland shooting

R4, he's in the reddest of districts in PA. What do you expect?

by Anonymousreply 5March 13, 2018 1:57 PM

Looking forward to the R trolling on this. "But he's not a Bernie bro!" "But he's against gun control!" Etc.

I live one district away. I wish I could vote for him, but I can't.

He is not for Medicare For All. So, I have no reason to be excited. Perhaps some day you will care about people and realize that health care costs are economically destructive.

Trolling, R9. Too obvious.

by Anonymousreply 10March 13, 2018 2:26 PM

R9, let's just get the Republican elected and wait for the next Dem primary. The last guy didn't have a Dem challenger when he last ran, but next time the Dems will make sure to run someone against the new Republican incumbent in the reddest of semi-Appalacian PA districts.

by Anonymousreply 11March 13, 2018 2:27 PM

Surely you mean we should get the Dem elected, r11?

R12, R11 is being sarcastic. R9 says he doesn't like the Dem candidate because he's not progressive enough, ignoring the fact that he's running in a very red PA district that didn't even have a Dem candidate last time (because it's THAT red). R9 is likely a troll, trying to discourage Dem turnout. R11 is saying "Fine, let's get the Republican elected because of your stupid purity test, and never have a Democrat from this district."

It amazing how much press this is getting since the congressional seat will disappear in Nov.

It's a bell weather so both parties are pulling out the stops.

Thanks r14. My Sarcast-O-Meter broke in 2016.
