One Singular Sensation

Dear Eldergays -

How did one become “one singular sensation” back in the day? Was it important?

Were any of you one of the highkicking stage dancers at the end of this video?

So fabulous!

Another trolling frau thread. Nothing to see here unless alt right wasted space is your thing.

by Anonymousreply 1March 8, 2018 11:54 PM

That outfit would get the Trump seal of approval

by Anonymousreply 2March 8, 2018 11:55 PM

OP here not a troll - just a young gay guy looking at 80s musical videos and this one struck me as very gay

0/10. Now it's clear you're a liar. Sounding so contrived gives you away. Please don't respond back. Troll.

Were there these many dancers on stage during the actual play?

by Anonymousreply 5March 9, 2018 12:13 AM

Fuck off cunt - why are you being such a dick? If you don’t like my post, move the fuck on!

by Anonymousreply 6March 9, 2018 12:15 AM

It looks like they are using mirrors to enhance the effect but still a lot of dancers!

by Anonymousreply 7March 9, 2018 12:16 AM

Saw this on Broadway about 3 times. Loved it!

by Anonymousreply 8March 9, 2018 12:28 AM

OP again - how come musicals don’t have numbers like this anymore?

by Anonymousreply 9March 9, 2018 12:30 AM

OP, I'm not sure why you're being attacked.

On the Broadway Theatre threads, we chat a lot about the different performers who made a role their own, or ruined it, or who were excellent, but doomed by a poor production. Those threads and posts require a pretty specific (pretty experienced) point of view.

But 'A Chorus Line' is a play about the supporting players: the chorus itself, and while it adds some major characters, it allows the inviduals from the chorus to emerge as individuals. Few people follow the careers of performers from the chorus unless/until they move into full starring/supporting roles.

'A Chorus Line' is a rather strange hybrid, I guess. Even when you have a large production like 'Cats', there are a few roles that are designated as 'starring', but many others that are simply chorus roles.

The original Broadway production of A Chorus Line was amazing.

The movie sucked hard! It was the suckiest suck that ever sucked.

The Broadway revival was very "meh!"

Maureen Stapleton didn't like the show because she said it made actors look like they had to beg for work. Which wasn't a problem for Miss Mo Stapleton, but there were many actors who understood "I really need this job, please God, I need this job."

by Anonymousreply 11March 9, 2018 12:49 AM

I never saw it on stage , but I did see the movie—and I really liked it. I felt the casting was pretty great.

Had I seen the original BWY production, I might feel differently.

by Anonymousreply 12March 9, 2018 1:14 AM

I was in a professional production of A Chorus Line 30 years ago. It was a lot of fun but one of the toughest shows I’ve ever performed in. I was an ok dancer but was hired because I was a strong singer and actor. I had to work my butt off to get myself on par with the true dancers. I just remembered we all hated the Hello Twelve Hello Thirteen section in the show because it goes on and on and by the time it is done, your huffing and puffing. The other part we dreaded was the long section of when everyone is rehearsing One and Zach is yelling at Cassie. Another section that goes on and on and when you finish that, you go right into the tap routine section. Wish I could go back and do it all again. :)

OP here - thanks for all the interesting stories! I’m not very knowledgeable when it comes to musicals so thought I’d ask here. Most musicals seem pretty standard (Cats, Phantom, etc) but this one seemed like it was different, especially this number that just seemed to get bigger and bigger. Curious about the Fosse musicals too with everyone striking jerky poses throughout. Still learning so excuse my ignorance.

Not sure why a troll or Russian bot would ask about musicals anyway so the accusations above are dumb.

Is the movie that terrible? Maybe in comparison to the Broadway show, but if one never, ever saw ACL could the movie still be appreciated?

by Anonymousreply 15March 9, 2018 6:24 AM

R1, R4 needs to be lobotomized.

by Anonymousreply 16March 9, 2018 6:25 AM

[quote]OP, I'm not sure why you're being attacked.

Because we just did an identical thread two weeks ago.

by Anonymousreply 17March 9, 2018 6:52 AM

R13, your story sounds very much like mine. I too was in a production some 30 years ago. I've never, before or since, worked so hard in a show. But it was a glorious time and I still have friends from, that particular show.

by Anonymousreply 18March 9, 2018 8:13 AM

Why bother with the movie? You can go to YouTube and see a bootleg of the original Broadway cast, and even in its terrible film quality is still a zillion times better than the movie.

That 2-hour buzzing, flickering blurry mess is a ZILLION times better than the movie?

by Anonymousreply 20March 9, 2018 11:46 AM

Some people can watch something like that, r20. Some can't. (I'm with you. I gave it five minutes.)

by Anonymousreply 21March 9, 2018 11:58 AM

R17 what is the link to the identical thread from 2 weeks ago so I can read the responses?

by Anonymousreply 22March 9, 2018 1:25 PM

Here it is, R22.

Thank you! This is amazing! I need to start searching before posting! 🙏

by Anonymousreply 24March 9, 2018 4:54 PM

I thought I was an eldergay but since I don’t know who the hell those people are I guess I’m good for another few years.

by Anonymousreply 25March 9, 2018 4:57 PM

Were there many original cast members that were victims of the AIDS crisis? I was shocked at how many gay porn stars succumbed to the illness so I’m sure many dancers from that era did as well.

by Anonymousreply 26March 9, 2018 5:02 PM

What city were your productions in, r13 and r18?

by Anonymousreply 27March 9, 2018 5:15 PM

[quote]Were there many original cast members that were victims of the AIDS crisis?

Several of the men, including the brains behind it, Michael Bennett.

by Anonymousreply 28March 10, 2018 12:33 AM

No I didn't dance in the finale. I'd just pop in and out when the dancing got too hard.

by Anonymousreply 29March 10, 2018 1:28 AM

If Audrey was one singular sensation, what was Judy?

by Anonymousreply 30March 12, 2018 10:38 AM

Judy was two singular sensations, if you catch my drift.

by Anonymousreply 31March 12, 2018 11:07 AM

That other thread isn't the same as this one at all.

by Anonymousreply 32March 12, 2018 11:08 AM

I would give anything to be one singular sensation, if only for a moment....

by Anonymousreply 33March 12, 2018 11:16 AM

R31 LOL

by Anonymousreply 34March 12, 2018 11:17 AM

Here's the twist behind the bittersweet finale. You spend two hours getting to know some of these people deeply, and when they come out at the end, they're in those champagne colored tuxedos and they all look the same. You look for your favorites, but they're hard to discern. Which one's Val? Where's Paul? They're back to being anonymous back-up dancers but they're happy they've made it into the show.

The end.

by Anonymousreply 35March 12, 2018 11:44 AM

Did the my get to keep the outfits?

by Anonymousreply 36March 12, 2018 12:00 PM

They***

by Anonymousreply 37March 12, 2018 12:01 PM

R36, I hear The Lion King cast got to keep their outfits.
