What is it? My prescription to Alprazolam only lasts so many nights.
Best/safest over-the-counter sleeping pill!

I would try melatonin first.

I’m researching magnesium as I type.. melatonin doesn’t work for me.
I have anxiety and wake up 3/4 x a night, also have trouble falling asleep.

Melatonin gummies worked for me when I came back from Australia

Take an epsom salt bath right before bed OP
by Anonymous | reply 7 | March 8, 2018 1:48 PM |
benadryl, bonine, dramamine
bonine isn't supposed to make you as tired but for some reason it knocks me out more than the other two.

Add an hour of physical activity to your day, even if it is just walking, and even if it is six 10-minute walks per day and that will help. I also listen to "sleep stories" through an app on my phone and have yet to get through the whole 20-minute duration before I fall asleep.

Try exercising more or in your case at all

I use the generic doxylamine succinate to get to sleep. The other, diphenhydramine (Benadryl), doesn't work for me. So if you need something strong, I recommend the doxylamine.

Alteril. But it isn't cheap. I used it when I was weaning myself off Ambien and Xanax.

Fresh air and exercise.
But to actually answer your question, a physician friend of mine says Benadryl is perfectly safe.
by Anonymous | reply 16 | March 8, 2018 2:34 PM |
Thanks R14, the price seems reasonable and has good reviews. I’m going to try that, never heard of it
by Anonymous | reply 17 | March 8, 2018 2:46 PM |
Long-term use of drugs like Benadryl has been linked to an increased risk of dementia. Taking it occasionally is fine, especially for allergic reactions, but don't become dependent on it as a sleep aid.
by Anonymous | reply 18 | March 8, 2018 3:04 PM |
Tylenol PM got me to sleep fast on just half a dose. I was sleepless and in grief at the time, and it was the only that shut down my overwhelmed brain long enough to sleep. Try it.
by Anonymous | reply 19 | March 8, 2018 3:09 PM |
You might be one of the lucky people who get drowsy from ibuprofen.
by Anonymous | reply 20 | March 8, 2018 3:53 PM |
I rarely have a problem falling asleep, but I often wake up way too early. (And not to relieve myself.) My sleep specialist (I have apnea) recommended time-release melatonin. I've been trying it for the pas week, but it doesn't seem to have done much good.
by Anonymous | reply 21 | March 8, 2018 6:09 PM |
Don't know how old the above posters are, but past age 65 it's become impossible for me to get a full night of non-restless sleep without some help. It doesn't seem to be related to anxiety at all. I read every night for an hour or so before going to sleep, which helps. Probably should exercise more!
I can take just a half pill of Alprazolam and it totally works. A whole pill is 0.5 MG. I just don't know if it's better to change to something else on some nights. Or is that just as bad?
Interestingly, in my 50s, I had many night's sleep interrupted having to pee but I seemed to outgrow that issue in my early 60s.
But thanks, everyone, for all these suggestions.

Always been a horrible sleeper. I use 0.25-0.5 mg alprazolazam , 3 or 4 nights a week. Have stopped for periods. Donesnt feel addictive - and my doc says it’s ok. Occasional that have to do ambien - overnight trips, work stress. But I feel alprazolazam is the better of the two - lots of horrible studies coming out about Ambien and incidence of death. Strange and unexplained. I think the Xanax paranoia is overhyped. As long as it’s used in under 0.5 mg dosage.

What are the effects of combined use of Ambien and alcohol in moderate amounts?
by Anonymous | reply 24 | March 8, 2018 8:24 PM |
I wish something could stop me from waking up to pee. I am only in my 30s so it's not a prostate thing. I asked my doctor, but he said those drugs have complex effects & can cause all kinds of kidney and electrolyte problems. But, I rarely sleep through the night thanks to this. It doesn't matter when I stop drinking / eating either. I will always wake up to pee before I am done sleeping.
by Anonymous | reply 25 | March 8, 2018 8:25 PM |
I’ve never had problems when I took an ambien after 2-3 wines (International flights)

I'm with r13: doxylamine succinate (Unisom). The trick is to take only half a pill (they are "pre-cut" - so easy to break). Reduces/eliminates any grogginess in the morning.
I get Restless Legs Syndrome as a side effect of diphenhydramine (Benadryl, Aleve PM).
by Anonymous | reply 28 | March 8, 2018 8:54 PM |
I too occasionally take Xanax- half pill. I also just read until sleeping and I can often meditate to quiet my mind and fall asleep. I really prefer to take the Xanax when I am anxious and cannot quiet my mind by other means.

Career-limiting late night emails and social media posts. True story.
by Anonymous | reply 30 | March 8, 2018 9:09 PM |
i just got these from ebay and forgot they are NOT 25 mg each like the generic benedryl i have used, they are 50 mg per pill.....
i took 2 one night and lost a whole day and night so yeah, these suckers work. they are likened to unisom which i have never used.
just make sure what you get has the Diphenhydramine in it because that is the stuff that makes you sleep. like, a lot.

Benadryl

I picked up some of this Lipton "Stress Less" tea (found in your grocery store or where ever) for about $3.
I'm someone who struggles to fall and stay asleep. Damn, this stuff really works for me. It's Chamomile, Cinnamon, and Lavender - I have a glass about 9/10 PM. I become so relaxed and sleepy. I highly recommend anyone try it.

I've never used it but my grandmother and my aunt both had luck with MidNite.

by Anonymous | reply 36 | March 31, 2018 4:15 AM |
I take 2 melatonin and 2 or 3 valerian root pills. Sleep like a baby.
by Anonymous | reply 37 | March 31, 2018 4:17 AM |
Benadryl. Seriously. Even the kiddie kind will knock you out.
by Anonymous | reply 38 | March 31, 2018 4:30 AM |
Diphenhydramine (Benadryl, Advil PM, Simply Sleep, etc.) works well for me but only lasts aboyt 5 hours. Plus if you take it too often you build up a tolerance and it becomes ineffective.
Doxylamine is stronger, but whenever I've taken it I wake up in the morning with a headache and a little groggy feeling, which do go away.
To have sex, even just jacking off, causes a release of endorphins from the pituitary and hypothalamus, and can help you fall asleep.
Best to go to bed at the same time every night and wake up at the same time every morning, even on weekends. Your body's natural clock will help you fall asleep and wake up at those times.
Best to have your bedroom completely dark, cool and quiet. No TV in the bedroom.

Sleep meditation music on Youtube, using earphones.

The thing with Benadryl is that if you take more than what you need to become sleepy, it actually makes many people jittery.
by Anonymous | reply 44 | March 31, 2018 4:38 AM |
I don't know how safe they are but I have tried a few and prefer Aleve PM
by Anonymous | reply 45 | March 31, 2018 4:47 AM |
Benedryl and up its generic are linked to dementia. Best to avoid if possible.
by Anonymous | reply 46 | March 31, 2018 4:58 AM |
Benadryl makes me completely wired, not sleepy. Antihistamines like this make most people drowsy, but some people have the opposite reaction. I have some on hand in case I get hives because it helps with that.
by Anonymous | reply 47 | March 31, 2018 5:05 AM |
Benadryl gives me restless legs and I took 75mg once and got a full-on anticholinergic crisis and hallucinated that my sofa was going to eat me, so never take more than 50mg Benadryl. Poppy seed tea worked great for me and NyQuil severe for nite occasionally. I like doxylamine better. Poppy seed tea works but do some research before concocting some. There’s just enough morphine in those seeds. Luckily they taste very bitter and so does the tea. And of course, do not do Walter White impressions without exercise. Exhaust yourself as much as you can. Never mix Ambien and alcohol, you big dodo. You could sleep walk right on to the highway. Once I tried Driftoff from Amazon. Mixed it with the NyQuil. For horrible insomnia, heavyweights like Zyprexa are great. That’s an antipsychotic used for bipolar disorder. Hope you feel better soon.

I used to take Advil PM. They worked like a charm, but unfortunately I didn't realize you are not supposed to take therm every day. After about 3 months of use, they tore up my stomach and now I have all sorts of issues, cant tolerate certain foods, etc. My Dr said to switch to Benedryl.
I took that as a kid when I was sick, mom was a nurse so I know it works but I just decided not to risk any more unknown damage and went cold turkey no more pills, even the most mild of them. It took about a week before I could get a full nights sleep.
Also, working several times a week and if you take naps stop it. I know you feel better but it really is the key to being tired when its time to go to bed.
