Did Anne Hathaway ruin her career?
I just haven't seen her much since "Les Miserables," and I wonder if her behavior during the Oscar campaign alienated so many people in Hollywood and in the public that she's now considered box office poison.
I'm sorry if that's true. Even she has admitted she acted like a jerk in the run-up to the Oscars, and she's genuinely talented and pretty, and has a surprisingly wide range (as she showed in Brokeback Mountain).
On the other hand, I feel that if even Reese Witherspoon could make a comeback after "Do you know who I am? You're about to find out...", then anyone can do it.

The weird thing about her is that she was specifically designed by nature to do musical theater on Broadway. She has a lovely soprano and can genuinely act, and her too-big features make her look even more beautiful at a distance. She also has genuine comic talent, as she showed on SNL. She would superb in the current revival of My Fair Lady, for example, and I still have very fond memories of her as Lili in the Encores! revival of "Carnival!" 15 years ago. I don't why she wants to do gritty drama or sexy rom coms when she's not cut out for them.

R29 LOL.
The Oscars don't give a shit anymore about nominees making complete fools out of themselves. They gave it to Melissa Leo after her self made "For Your Consideration" photoshoot and Kate Winslet, who publicly begged for it. The days of aggressive campaigning being a turn off are long gone, unfortunately.
However, I always felt Anne got a bit of a raw deal. She was roundly blasted in the media while Jennifer Lawrence was the new sweetheart who could do no wrong (My, how times have changed) I do think the Oscar win hurt her career. She's a terrific actress, but Les Mis was one of her weakest roles. She would have won an Oscar eventually if she didn't get it for that.

I don't particularly like her, but The Intern did make $200 million worldwide, so there's probably still life in her career.
She has three movies in the can: Oceans 8, a comedy being released this summer, and a drama. What she needs is a movie like Enchanted; maybe the Barbie movie she's rumoured for would fit the bill.

Aggressively campaigning for it can be a major turnoff to the public. When you're constantly on the public radar for several consecutive months at a time, it can be damaging to your career. Overexposure is not some cumbersome concept to understand.

There's a big difference between what Leo did and AnnE's, Winslet's, Kidman's, et al behavior. Leo placed a week's worth of ads and that was the beginning and the end of it. It was strategic (and likely unnecessary as she was the frontrunner, anyway). The other women had been nakedly whinging and moaning for months about their lust for an Oscar (and in Winslet's case, it had been going on for years). These are the women who get shunned after winning- the ones who are given either inexplicable Oscars and cannot follow up or the ones who are given Oscars to shut them up. Kidman was reduced to doing straight to DVD movies with Nicholas Cage before HBO swooped in and saved her career. And Winslet went for nearly a decade as PNG before finally getting another (undeserved) nomination for Jobs. In the Supporting category. AnnE is still in Oscar Begging Jail, and may well break out of it at some point.

She is talented and beautiful, but she was genuinely annoying leading up to the oscars. She wasn’t trying to be overbearing, but she had a different personality for every talk show she went on and they were all try-hard. On Ellen she was trying to come across as funny, and she definitely is not. On Chelsea Handler’s show she tried to be cool, she just came off as a nerdy girl showing off in front of the cooler kids. It went on and on for every talk show she was on. The Oscar speech was excruciating and apparently the public who were already unimpressed with her talk show appearances just turned on her. She’ll be the first to say, she was ripped to shreds on social media after the oscars (and not just on datalounge r50)
Her career isn’t over, but a lot of the parts she would have been offered in the past were then offered to other actresses. And her public appearances will be limited to avoid reminding people they don’t like her. It’s not her acting, beauty or awards, it’s her personality which actually turned the public against her.

Oh, good grief.
Academy voters vote based upon whoever is winning all the major awards at the time. Just like SAG voters take their cues from the Golden Globes and so on. Sorry to burst your bubble, but most Oscar voters aren't watching all of the nominated movies.
But Oscar voters are not the general public. And yes, the general public gets tired of having the same faces at every awards show for a month or two, saying the same speeches, thanking the same people. And then if they're nominated several times over the next few years, it's rinse and repeat.
And if you think that's not true, then provide a list of actors who have been able to match their Oscar winning success AFTER winning the award in the last decade or two. The ones whom it probably benefits the most are the character actors who let the work speak for themselves.

Anne Hathaway and Jennifer Lawrence winning Academy Awards in the same year turned me off the Oscars for good. Both were undeserving and highly annoying.

And yes, there was a time when actors were able to establish themselves after winning an Oscar. But that was when there wasn't umpteen awards shows and a PR blitz of several months leading up to the show. You showed up at the Globes and/or the Oscars and that was that. If you were lucky you attended one of the handful of critics dinners.

Exactly r95, actors seem to forget that. If they fuck it up someone else just steps into their place. There are only a few star making parts for every few thousand actors waiting for their big break.
Jennifer Lawrence stepped into AnnE’s spotlight the year AnnE won the best supporting Oscar. Where Anne came across as pretentious and self involved, JL came across as a girl who couldn’t believe her good luck. Of course JL is now walking a fine line herself, surrounded by celebrity friends, the casting couch rumours and complaining about her fans. She should put a sock in it and look at AnnE as a cautionary tale of stars who appear to be getting too big for their boots.

Kate Winslet's at an odd age. Established Hollywood female stars don't tend to get as many parts in their 40s as they do in their fifties. I think Michelle Pfeiffer, for example, was wise to wait out her forties before she made her comeback.

Anne Hathaway, Keira Knightly, Natalie Portman, Mila Kunis, Julia Styles-they were all coming up when I was in high school or so but by the time I graduated college, I rarely hear or see them in anything unless it's a type cast role, or some random ass thing.
Some actresses are able to rise up and continue acting in projects besides "mom" roles while others kind of just fall off the way side doing minor roles/gigs. I mean, they're all still working for sure; they're just not in the lime light as they once were, but that's entertainment. One day you're in and the next day...you're out. When you get older, you just gotta find a new niche. Is all.

[quote] "If you take away the superhero and Hunger Games movies, she ain't doin' so hot."
[quote] Why would you, [R72]? She starred in them
Well first- she did't STAR in the superhero movies. She was part of an ensemble. And more importantly, both series were franchise movies based on properties with huge followings before they were ever made into films. You could have plugged Angelyne into The Hunger Games and it would have done the same business. And I seem to recall she didn't fare too well as Mystique.
I'm talking about Jennifer Lawrence vehicles. Joy, Mother, Red Sparrow, Serena... all were flops or disappointments. Her only post-Oscar hit, Passengers, could be credited as much to Chris Pratt as to her.

I actually like Anne a lot. I think she has shitty taste in men and should try women. The Italian guy went to jail and the husbands job seems to be "being Anne's husband". Apparently he chased after young, rich women at Brown. I think she just lacks a few social skills, but we all do. She is just like the rest of us and is trying to fit in.

Oh, god, R133, she has had some sort of eye surgery. They were always a bit buggy/droopy at the corners, but that was part of their cartoonish charm; they were her most beautiful and captivating feature. Someone must have told her they were aging her. She looks like Blake Lively in your clip.
This damage can't be undone, but she needs to stop fucking with her face NOW. (How is it that so many celebrities who try to preserve their looks end up worse off than if they had simply aged naturally and healthily? Madonna is a perfect example: All the money in the world, yet she has somehow slid into the realm of the grotesque.)

No op. Hathaway is good looking , intelligent, and talented. She would be fantastic on Broadway. The hateful bullying campaign against her said more about how trashy Americans are than anything Anne did. The complaint I heard most about her was that she was "fake " because she behaved politely and enthusiastically in her interactions . The low class cunts who made these criticisms couldn't understand that not everyone is raised to act like a surly white trash brat in public.

r5, Broadway musicals are hard work... 8 shows a week, live singing and dancing. You think a pampered Hollywood film star has to stamina to work for a living at musical theatre actors do?
by Anonymous | reply 152 | December 5, 2018 7:30 PM

Some film actors can handle stage and some can't. Look at Julia Roberts. She bombed HARD on stage. Some can go back and forth. Glenn Close is excellent on stage and on film. Honestly, the preparation for the role is no different. It's about being a little bit bigger and using your voice more (projection). Truth be told, it's not that bad of a gig. On stage, you can still have some time for a personal life. Even on two-show days, you can go out with friends and see your kids for a bit. Film sets can go on for over 12 hours. It's hellish. Give me the stage any day of the week.
Anne is incredibly talented and I'd love to see her come back to stage. She was rumored to be doing Sally Bowles in that last revival of Cabaret before they got Michelle Williams and (later) Emma Stone. Give her a few more years and she might make an interesting Mame or Mama Rose.

She's very talented--I would also love to see her do more work on Broadway or in film musicals.
Her problem is that while she's quite good as an actress, her looks really restrict what she can do. She always has to play the pretty princess. It would be hard to imagine her playing a villain or a lower class character 9other than a 19th century prostitute).
I have forgiven her for her obnoxious behavior during that Oscar season when she was campaigning to win BSA for "Les Miserables." A lot of people just go nuts when they have the inside track at an Oscar (Kate Winslet is another), and I figure that actors have craved Oscars so bad while growing up that the system sort of makes them go crazy.

All these people saying shes "pretty" need their eyes examined. Shes unusual looking, not unattractive but not particularly pretty. I’d love to see her in ALW’s TELL ME ON A SUNDAY, especially the 2006 revised version with all the new songs. She would be sensational and could definitely hold the audience’s attention alone onstage for 90 minutes. It would be a cool live tv musical, too (which is what it started out as back in the 1970s anyway).

R163 I remember years ago when that was bouncing around and the rumor was Gaga was desperate for the Liza role. This was years before anyone would even think of giving her an acting job.
I wonder if “Get Happy” will ever get made.
by Anonymous | reply 164 | December 6, 2018 6:03 PM

Actually, Gaga would make a GREAT Liza if she could nail Liza's personality. Gaga seems too...subtle? Uncharismatic maybe? Liza was and is a bundle of joy. You just want to smile when you watch her. Gaga doesn't really have that. At least, we haven't seen it yet. She could sing and (possibly) dance Liza, but I don't know if she could channel her personality.
by Anonymous | reply 165 | December 6, 2018 6:55 PM

I can not really see Gaga doing Liza justice. I think people are correct that Anne is losing roles to Jlaw (who can not act and does the same role, and I assume got a lot because Anne wouldn't fuck Harvey. what a career milestone that you got work and an Oscar because you fucked the fat guy) and Emma Stone, who also is pretty shit. I think Anne needs to go for the grittier roles. I think she can do it, and play a range, maybe some tv work as well like a mini series etc.

r151 She won some minor critic's award for Les Miz and when she got on stage to make her speech she tried to joke how this was an honor but also an insult since they spelled her name wrong on the graphic when they showed her name. She doesn't need a comeback r199, she never damaged her career. She finished three major studio projects that are coming out next year, and was the critical hit of the Oceans8 group last year. She was offered millions to do the ever-percolating Barbie project at Sony, but ended up passing to do the Dee Rees Netflix project. She just finished filming an Amazon Prime anthology series.
She took time off to have her 1st kid so there's the appearance of a work slowdown but everyone gets a maternity leave. There's plenty of work in the pipeline, she worked almost non-stop last year.
