"Damn, you're ugly!": The opposite of the "Blossom, you're so beautiful!" thread

Let's list some projects where goodlooking actors were cast to play characters who were supposed to be average-looking or homely!

Michelle Pfeiffer in Frankie and Johnny - she looks as beautiful as ever, but is supposed to be playing some average-looking woman no one would look twice at

Peter O'Toole in Lawrence of Arabia - the real life Lawrence was short and plain

by Anonymousreply 53August 20, 2020 8:48 PM

Kate Winslet in that movie with Jennifer Connally.

by Anonymousreply 1February 28, 2018 3:35 PM

Lawrence was not hideous.

In Little Women Winona Ryder calls herself plain.....despite the fact that she looks downright radiant in the movie (and I don't even like Wino)

by Anonymousreply 3February 28, 2018 3:43 PM

Chloe Grace Moretz in the [italic]Carrie[/italic] remake

by Anonymousreply 4February 28, 2018 3:44 PM

Chloe Grace Moretz in Carrie. I know you don't have to be ugly to get bullied but Carrie in the book was most definitely supposed to be fug.

by Anonymousreply 5February 28, 2018 3:45 PM

Keira Knightley in The Imitation Game

Nicole Kidman in "The Hours"

Charlize Theron in "Monster"

Joan Crawford in "A Woman's Face"

Jared Leto in "Chapter 27"

by Anonymousreply 9February 28, 2018 7:03 PM

Thandie Newton in 'W'

by Anonymousreply 10February 28, 2018 7:05 PM

I'll definitely agree with Chloe in that Carrie remake. Yes, attractive girls are bullied, too, but she seemed too confident and comfortable in her skin. Sissy Spacek is a lovely woman, but she was able to convey so much angst and low self-esteem by the way she carried herself in the original film. When she finally washes her hair, puts on some lip gloss, a nice dress, and stands up straight, she literally glows. It's one of the best film transformations of all time, because it's believable.

Chloe would have been better suited to playing Chris or Sue instead. She just didn't have that special weirdness that Carrie should have. I also found Julianne Moore completely unmemorable as Margaret. Talk about playing it safe.

by Anonymousreply 11February 28, 2018 7:33 PM

So glad Pfeiffer in "Frankie and Johnny" launched this thread. She's a fine actress, but you cannot make her plain, cannot dress her down. Her beauty just shines through. Think about the role of Frankie this way... Terrance McNally wrote the role for Kathy Bates. She originated the role on stage.

Jessica Lange and Michelle Pfeiffer as farmwives in A Thousand Acres

by Anonymousreply 13February 28, 2018 9:28 PM

Logan Lerman in The Perks of Being a Wallflower.

The real Lillian Hellman was a horseface

Faye Dunaway and Warren Beatty were way too beautiful for real life Bonnie and Clyde.

by Anonymousreply 16March 1, 2018 12:44 AM

And the real Butch Cassidy and the Sundance kid weren't exactly Newman and Redford in the looks department

by Anonymousreply 17March 1, 2018 1:23 AM

That was kind of the point r15.

by Anonymousreply 18March 1, 2018 1:25 AM

The real Bonnie Parker.

by Anonymousreply 20March 1, 2018 1:44 AM

r19 Oh wow, too bad Mare Winningham was never cast in a remake, she was born to play Bonnie! Or Mary Stuart Masterson if you uglied her up a bit. But yeah, Faye was like a model then.

by Anonymousreply 21March 1, 2018 5:45 AM

I always assumed Bob Woodward would be a Redford type. Imagine my disappointment.

On the other hand, Hoffman was far better looking than Carl Bernstein.

by Anonymousreply 22March 1, 2018 6:12 AM

Ethel Merman was far too sexy to play Lola Lasagna.

by Anonymousreply 23March 1, 2018 7:20 AM

Rachel Lee Cook in M. Night Shayamalan’s She’s All That!

Whoopi Goldberg in The Color Purple. “You sure is ugly!” Yeah, right!

Anna Kendrick as the dirty ugly Cinderella.

Margot Robbie as Dr. Harleen Quinn, psychiatrist.

Rebel Wilson as Fat Amy who can’t find love. Uh huh, sure.

by Anonymousreply 24March 1, 2018 9:22 AM

Josh Brolin as W

by Anonymousreply 25March 1, 2018 2:51 PM

Janeane Garafolo was just as, if not more so, good-looking as Uma Thurman in The Truth about Cats and Dogs.

by Anonymousreply 26March 1, 2018 2:57 PM

Sandra Bullock as a homely, tomboyish cop in Miss Congeniality.

Lol i wouldn't have minded seeing his version of She's All That.

by Anonymousreply 28March 1, 2018 3:06 PM

If we’re including tv actors, then Jan Smithers (Bailey) on WKRP in Cincinnati. She wasn’t considered ugly on the show, but guys often ignore her and fawn over Loni/Jennifer.

by Anonymousreply 29March 1, 2018 3:13 PM

Liz Taylor in "Who's Afraid of Virginia Woolf?"

by Anonymousreply 30March 1, 2018 3:14 PM

In the novel Jane Eyre is described as being plain, homely etc. so it's no surprise that most of the actresses who portray her are better looking.

One notable exception is Andrea Martin as Jane Eyrehead in SCTV's brilliant parody.

by Anonymousreply 31March 1, 2018 3:28 PM

Emily Blunt in "Girl on a Train." Rachel was supposed to be overweight and disheveled from her alcoholism, but Blunt looked like she just stepped out of hair and make-up most of the film.

by Anonymousreply 32March 1, 2018 3:32 PM

Christian Bale as Dick Cheney in that movie he's doing

by Anonymousreply 33March 1, 2018 7:14 PM

Marilyn in the Munsters, of course.

by Anonymousreply 34March 1, 2018 7:18 PM

Vivien Leigh in GWTW. In the book, Scarlett is not a beauty, but is lively and has great charm. Vivien was breathtakingly beautiful

by Anonymousreply 35March 1, 2018 7:32 PM

Colin Firth as horsefaced George VI in The King's Speech;

Out of Africa- while the real Denys Finch-Hatten wasn't a total troll, he certainly wasn't Robert Redford (though he did appear to have BDF).

by Anonymousreply 36March 1, 2018 8:03 PM

Every woman portrayed by Mer. Sreep that cunt, was better looking than that shitface whore

by Anonymousreply 37March 1, 2018 8:30 PM

That actress playing Victoria on Masterpiece is too blandly pretty to play ugly Victoria.

by Anonymousreply 40March 2, 2018 12:25 AM

R19 That's not Bonnie Parker. It's an actress named Bethany Harper in THE BARROW GANG, a 1995 low-budget film that has never been released.

This is the real Bonnie Parker. She was not as statuesque as Faye, but she was considered cute and petite by her contemporaries. She was very popular in high school and later as a waitress.

I agree, R12. I'd have loved to have seen the film star Bates, & F. "FINEST ACTRESS IN THE ENGLISH LANGUAGE" Murray Abraham, though. And I absolutely adore Pfeiffer, and probably always will.

by Anonymousreply 50August 20, 2020 6:44 PM

Lili Taylor in Dogfight. Her character is supposedly so ugly that the entire plot of the movie hinges on it. Lili isn't a classic beauty, but she's far more attractive than the character is meant to be.

So very, very glad that Julianne Moore was replaced with Melissa McCarthy in CAN YOU EVER FORGIVE ME?

Here's a pic of Melissa next to the late Lee Israel, the woman she played. Julianne is a good actor, but Melissa was sensational.
