"Damn, you're ugly!": The opposite of the "Blossom, you're so beautiful!" thread
Let's list some projects where goodlooking actors were cast to play characters who were supposed to be average-looking or homely!
Michelle Pfeiffer in Frankie and Johnny - she looks as beautiful as ever, but is supposed to be playing some average-looking woman no one would look twice at
Peter O'Toole in Lawrence of Arabia - the real life Lawrence was short and plain

In Little Women Winona Ryder calls herself plain.....despite the fact that she looks downright radiant in the movie (and I don't even like Wino)

Chloe Grace Moretz in Carrie. I know you don't have to be ugly to get bullied but Carrie in the book was most definitely supposed to be fug.

I'll definitely agree with Chloe in that Carrie remake. Yes, attractive girls are bullied, too, but she seemed too confident and comfortable in her skin. Sissy Spacek is a lovely woman, but she was able to convey so much angst and low self-esteem by the way she carried herself in the original film. When she finally washes her hair, puts on some lip gloss, a nice dress, and stands up straight, she literally glows. It's one of the best film transformations of all time, because it's believable.
Chloe would have been better suited to playing Chris or Sue instead. She just didn't have that special weirdness that Carrie should have. I also found Julianne Moore completely unmemorable as Margaret. Talk about playing it safe.

So glad Pfeiffer in "Frankie and Johnny" launched this thread. She's a fine actress, but you cannot make her plain, cannot dress her down. Her beauty just shines through. Think about the role of Frankie this way... Terrance McNally wrote the role for Kathy Bates. She originated the role on stage.

If we’re including tv actors, then Jan Smithers (Bailey) on WKRP in Cincinnati. She wasn’t considered ugly on the show, but guys often ignore her and fawn over Loni/Jennifer.

In the novel Jane Eyre is described as being plain, homely etc. so it's no surprise that most of the actresses who portray her are better looking.
One notable exception is Andrea Martin as Jane Eyrehead in SCTV's brilliant parody.

Emily Blunt in "Girl on a Train." Rachel was supposed to be overweight and disheveled from her alcoholism, but Blunt looked like she just stepped out of hair and make-up most of the film.

R19 That's not Bonnie Parker. It's an actress named Bethany Harper in THE BARROW GANG, a 1995 low-budget film that has never been released.

This is the real Bonnie Parker. She was not as statuesque as Faye, but she was considered cute and petite by her contemporaries. She was very popular in high school and later as a waitress.

I agree, R12. I'd have loved to have seen the film star Bates, & F. "FINEST ACTRESS IN THE ENGLISH LANGUAGE" Murray Abraham, though. And I absolutely adore Pfeiffer, and probably always will.

Lili Taylor in Dogfight. Her character is supposedly so ugly that the entire plot of the movie hinges on it. Lili isn't a classic beauty, but she's far more attractive than the character is meant to be.

So very, very glad that Julianne Moore was replaced with Melissa McCarthy in CAN YOU EVER FORGIVE ME?
Here's a pic of Melissa next to the late Lee Israel, the woman she played. Julianne is a good actor, but Melissa was sensational.
