My god, what drek. Clearly designed to manipulate but it left me cold.

I agree. The show should be broadcast with a warning: "high estrogen levels necessary to proceed"
by Anonymous | reply 1 | February 28, 2018 2:25 PM |
Every single frau I know tried to get me to watch this. It’s the “Breaking Bad” of fraus. The more they raved and insisted I watch it, the more I was like “nope nope nope.”
by Anonymous | reply 2 | February 28, 2018 2:28 PM |
Watched once out of curiosity. Enough.
by Anonymous | reply 3 | February 28, 2018 2:32 PM |
I guess I hate watch it. I roll my eyes throughout, but I haven't missed an episode. I don't like any of the characters except the one they killed.
by Anonymous | reply 4 | February 28, 2018 2:34 PM |
Is it as bad as Parenthood?
by Anonymous | reply 5 | February 28, 2018 2:47 PM |
Parenthood was a lot better, if only because it had Peter Krause.
by Anonymous | reply 6 | February 28, 2018 2:47 PM |
Could not agree more. So wrong on every level. That Chrissy Metz is appalling to look at; she is not that good of an actress. I think the show actually exploits her by its insistence that such a morbidly obese woman can have a storybook romance, sex and a big wedding (steel yourselves for that episode!) "just like everybody else" - I guess it's supposed to be balm to every fat frau in America that you can be this hugely fat and still attain love and marriage. Is she supposed to be some kind of heroine or role model? Horrible, just horrible.
by Anonymous | reply 7 | February 28, 2018 2:52 PM |
Same, OP. Yet another show with lesbians yet no gay man in sight.
by Anonymous | reply 8 | February 28, 2018 3:01 PM |
In season two, a giant vagina terrorizes Manhattan, similar to "Cloverfield", except with a giant, ravenous vagina. What will the stars of the show do then?
by Anonymous | reply 9 | February 28, 2018 3:03 PM |
R7, you've obviously never looked at Disney Fairy Tale Wedding photos. Fat fraus do get the 100K wedding, and they are just as hideous as you'd imagine.
I have to look on occasion; a couple of custom bridal gowns and I've paid my bills for a year, and can work on indy films. I'd hate to have to make one for the large lady on this show.
by Anonymous | reply 10 | February 28, 2018 3:03 PM |
R8, wasn't the black Tom waits looking dad in a same sex relationship with a man at the end of his life?
by Anonymous | reply 11 | February 28, 2018 3:04 PM |
I have never watched it. But, I swear, a gay guy I work with is obsessed with it and keeps trying to get me to watch it.
by Anonymous | reply 12 | February 28, 2018 3:05 PM |
What is the show about? Even Kim Kardashian was on Twitter the other day asking what it was about and if it was any good. One of the shows star's responded to her twit. So what is it about? I don't care enough to go find out.
by Anonymous | reply 13 | February 28, 2018 3:05 PM |
Watched part of one episode. It's boring and weepy about nothing.
by Anonymous | reply 14 | February 28, 2018 3:07 PM |
I started this show just because first episode had Milo's naked butt but after few episodes I dropped it
by Anonymous | reply 15 | February 28, 2018 3:15 PM |
You’ve never seen it? NEVER? OMG you GUYS HE’S NEVER SEEN “THIS IS US!” OMG YOU [bold]HAVE[/bold] TO WATCH IT! Just watch it. You have to. You’ll LOVE it. Trust me! It is SO good! Isn’t it good? It’s so good, right? I KNOW! He’s never seen it. Can you believe it? Tell him. TELL HIM! TELL HIM HE HAS TO WATCH “THIS IS US!” SQEEEEEEEEEE!! SEE!?! YOU [bold]HAVE[/bold] TO WATCH IT!
by Anonymous | reply 16 | February 28, 2018 3:17 PM |
It’s sole existence is to make the viewer cry. I can turn on the news for that. No thanks.
by Anonymous | reply 17 | February 28, 2018 3:19 PM |
I like it - but I'm very aware I'm being cheaply emotionally manipulated by it. I cry during every episode so their manipulation works. Then I feel shame.
by Anonymous | reply 18 | February 28, 2018 3:24 PM |
I give This is Us credit for usurping SVU as the worst and frauiest drek ever.
by Anonymous | reply 19 | February 28, 2018 3:30 PM |
The first episode with its use of flashbacks/future jumps and surprising ending is what hooked so many people. Actually was well done. Stopped watching after three episodes - too weepy and dramatic.
Chrissy has gotten significantly larger since last season. I was shocked seeing her on a recent promo.
by Anonymous | reply 20 | February 28, 2018 3:33 PM |
When I started to see the promos for season one, they reminded me of some Hallmark Channel movie. That was all I needed to see, have never watched it and have no desire to do so.
by Anonymous | reply 21 | February 28, 2018 3:34 PM |
EP Isaac Aptaker is totally fucking adorable.
by Anonymous | reply 22 | February 28, 2018 3:36 PM |
Hey Chrissy! CHRISSY! Wake up! Your scene's next!
by Anonymous | reply 23 | February 28, 2018 3:42 PM |
[quote]So many people were telling me how 'amazing' it was.
The DL was NOT telling you this. Listen to us.
Its fine for certain people. But yes, most people who hang out on a board like this will find it maudlin and laughably emotionally manipulative.
by Anonymous | reply 24 | February 28, 2018 3:52 PM |
I'm afraid Chrissy Metz is going just drop over and die.
They'll write it in if it happens; Kevin and Randall will moan how they didn't do enough for her.
Mandy Moore is so unconvincing as an older woman; the makeup and hair looks ridiculous.
by Anonymous | reply 25 | March 14, 2018 4:51 AM |
It was sweet at first, but the more popular it got, the more they turned it into a big emotional jerk off session. Then they teased the the father’s death out sooo long that you started hoping he’d die. Chrissy Metz is a mediocre actress and her character is unlikeable. Your morbid obesity is not everyone else’s fault. Get a therapist and a personal trainer and stop using your family to work out your personal issues. Toby must enjoy dating an emotional cripple.
by Anonymous | reply 26 | March 14, 2018 4:59 AM |
when the show first premiered I believed they said Chrissy was going to lose weight and that would be written into the show.
but it doesn't look like it's happening.
I didn't get the finale where Deja took a Louisville slugger to someone's car b/c she thought her dad was Sterling K. Brown.
by Anonymous | reply 27 | March 14, 2018 5:09 AM |
I thought that was Randall's car she was smashing.
by Anonymous | reply 28 | March 14, 2018 7:10 AM |
Chrissy has definitely lost weight. I recall the first season that I would gasp when they showed her full girth, which wasn't often. Having said that, the wedding dress was horrible and unflattering and made her look even larger than she is.
I supplement my income with couture wedding gowns. am guessing some large bride will be asking for a copy of this, or will at least refer to this dress in my not so distant future. Hideous.

Is this the Gilmore Girls of this era?
by Anonymous | reply 30 | March 14, 2018 8:29 AM |
r30 lol, i was going to type this nearly identical response when i saw the thread title.
by Anonymous | reply 31 | March 14, 2018 8:45 AM |
Why Gilmore Girls? (I couldn't watch: my hatred of Lauren Graham trumped my love of Kelly Bishop every time I tried.)
by Anonymous | reply 32 | March 14, 2018 12:01 PM |
Maybe she is wearing Spanx?
by Anonymous | reply 33 | March 14, 2018 12:09 PM |
Amen, OP.
It is horribly predictable and manipulative.
And while I know one of DL's favorite things to do is to rejoice in mocking the fatness of others.....I think the writers have done a terrible job with the role of Kate. Having a larger sized woman could have been interesting and different, but she literally seems to have no other internal life than "Fuck I'm Fat." And Kevin and Randall aren't much deeper.
Just so disjointed and bad. Watched two episodes and that's enough for me forever.
by Anonymous | reply 34 | March 14, 2018 12:17 PM |
those family ish shows are for the cornpone trumpster deplorables I presume.
produced by the slave masters no doubt...
by Anonymous | reply 35 | March 14, 2018 12:22 PM |
I like the show. But, some of the characters are too annoying mainly Toby and self-righteous Randall.
by Anonymous | reply 36 | March 14, 2018 12:28 PM |
I hate watch because my wife likes it, but it does seem somewhat self-aware in that just when I've had enough a character (usually Beth) calls someone out for their self-involved behavior, or like in last night's episode, Toby's parents seemed to be pretty on-target with their concerns about Kate.
by Anonymous | reply 37 | March 14, 2018 12:33 PM |
r23 you made me pee a little.
by Anonymous | reply 39 | March 14, 2018 12:52 PM |
NBC’s promotion of the show is truly shit-ageous. Every week they try to up the ante with their rhetoric getting ever more over heated. “This week... get ready to cry.” “This week- get ready to feel feelings you’ve never felt.” “This week- if you thought your tear ducts were dry...” It is so gross.
by Anonymous | reply 40 | March 14, 2018 2:01 PM |
This show is nothing like Gilmore Girls- what an odd comparison.
by Anonymous | reply 41 | March 14, 2018 5:04 PM |
r41 its obviously not the same show, but the audience and the reason they watch it have parallels -- mostly women who are drawn to the "cozy sweater and coffee" vibe of the shows
by Anonymous | reply 42 | March 14, 2018 11:47 PM |
That wedding episode was literally the worst piece of cheesy stinking phony schmaltz I have ever seen. Sorry, but it is just horrifying to look at that woman - when she was standing on that bridge draped in that bedspread, I thought the bridge would collapse.
The whole episode - the flashbacks, the imagined sequence with Mandy and Saint Jack, (aged as badly as anything in high school theater!) the hideous plot threads (the surly adoptee bashing in the windshield of that Mercedes, the ridiculous relationships of the three "siblings", the maudlin tone to the whole thing). Is there a human being on earth who didn't think Wendie Malick's line, "We're worried about Kate" was meant to refer to the fact that she's a LIVING WHALE??!!
And the flash forwards to next season are appalling - Kevin goes to Vietnam with his new squeeze, Beth's cousin, the photographer, where tragedy will certainly ensue; the poor actor who plays Toby will sink into crippling depression after realizing he married a LIVING WHALE; and I don't know what the hell lays in wait for poor Sterling K. Brown (who should BEG to have his character killed off and leave this shitshow asap!) He too gets aged (as badly as anything in community theater) and is shown speaking to his grown daughter about how "we have to go see her" - (Alzheimer's for Mandy? prostitution and drug use for the surly adoptee?) Who knows? Who gives a fuck? It's just AWFUL on more levels than I can count! (Kate wants to be a...wait for it...SINGER! Please, God, NOOOOOO!)
I just to just hate watch this crapfest on demand once in awhile, but no more. It is nauseating.

This is the truth. The promotion for this show is infuriating. They work so hard to emotionally manipulate you even before you watch this emotionally manipulative mess.

Who are Randall and Tess waiting to see?
by Anonymous | reply 45 | March 19, 2018 5:59 PM |
Every single emotion is spelled out in dialogue and beyond on the nose. "We'll get through this together." Too earnest by half and every cliche on the planet.
Drama for Dummies.

My Mom called it a second rate 30something.
by Anonymous | reply 47 | March 19, 2018 6:10 PM |
A gay friend of mine, who is already suffer from a breakup, watches this shit. I suffered through three episodes before I called it quits. Friendship has it's limits. So many quality shows out right now and he sits on the couch watching this crap.
by Anonymous | reply 48 | March 19, 2018 6:11 PM |
Your mom is right, R47. It's thirtysomething-esque, without being nearly as good.
by Anonymous | reply 49 | March 19, 2018 6:12 PM |
I believe it is executive produced by Ken Olin (Michael Steadman).
by Anonymous | reply 50 | March 19, 2018 6:58 PM |
It is. I wish he had brought some of that Steadman goodness with him. Or Sally Field Programme goodness (which he also EPed).
by Anonymous | reply 51 | March 19, 2018 7:00 PM |
The writing is so BAD - they just make it up as they go along! There are numerous characters who appear suddenly and then just drop out of sight - remember Sophie, the love of Kevin's life? And of course, none of them WORK! How on earth do they support themselves? Supposedly Kate used to live in LA so she could sacrifice her life to be Kevin's personal assistant (remember that actress with the brat daughter she worked for for like one or two episodes?) And Randall, who had some high powered, high stress job that left him curled up in a fetal position (from which he recovered miraculously), only to buy the slum building that his crackhead bio dad used to live in? They hilariously housed the tenants in a HOTEL while they rehabbed the building in one day! And who is financing the legal adoption of that surly adoptee? Where did Kate get the money to pay for that fat farm, which clearly didn't do her any good? She has had no job whatsoever, other than that one time she sang for about thirty seconds out on that patio.
Sophomoric treacle, all of it. AWFUL.
by Anonymous | reply 53 | March 19, 2018 7:11 PM |
I'm sorry, I know the current trend is to believe that every woman is smart and powerful and standing up to years of victimhood -- but shows like this and those "Shades of Gray" movies only prove that to be a falsehood. There is no way in Hell men are the audience for these pieces of shit.
by Anonymous | reply 54 | March 19, 2018 7:49 PM |
The “This is U.S.” sketch on SNL (mocking all the chaos in the Trump White House) was great though. It was on a few weeks ago when Sterling K. Brown hosted.

I gave it three episodes, so I tried. I really tried. I tried for Milo and, not gonna lie, I tried for Mandy.
But no. And not for so many of the assholish reasons posted here.
It was just so fucking corny, I could take no one seriously.
I honestly for real don't know how it even got nominated for anything. There was nothing outstanding to me about any of the performances.
And NO, it's nothing like Gilmore Girls. I fuckin love Gilmore Girls.
