It used to be so popular, and with the aging Boomers, you would think it would be doing gangbusters now.
In the early days of television, the marketing of Geritol was involved in the quiz show scandal, as the sponsor of Twenty-One. For many years after that, Geritol was largely marketed on television programs that appealed primarily to older viewers, such as The Lawrence Welk Show, What's My Line?, Hee Haw, and Ted Mack's Original Amateur Hour. It was also one of the sponsors of the original Star Trek.

Oh, that reminds me of the Lawrence Welk threads!

The elderly buy their supplements from Infowars nowadays.

According to Wikipedia it was contraindicated. I think that means it was just snake oil.

R7 Er no...contraindications are essentially warnings about how a medication can interact with other medications, foods, etc. For example, alcohol and Tylenol/paracetamol are contraindicated because taken together for long periods of time, they will cause liver damage. The blood thinner coumadin and some greens are contraindicated because the combination can cause blood clots; my grandmother wasn’t aware that asparagus was also contraindicated and had a massive stroke as a result of not knowing this.
Indications are instructions about the proper dosage and application of a drug.

In the case of the Wikipedia article, it states that Geritol was contraindicated generally (eg, not recommended/discouraged) because it contained iron and iron supplements taken when unnecessary can cause serious blood problems.

I took it every day when I was growing up: I was anemic.
by Anonymous | reply 10 | February 24, 2018 7:15 PM |
But did you have "Iron Poor Blood?"
by Anonymous | reply 11 | February 24, 2018 8:48 PM |
Because towns full of blue-haired maiden aunts drunk off their asses on patent medicine and belting out standards is way yonder too much of a scandal.

I'll stick to Midol, thanks.

It's still made but marketed as Cialis now.

It turned your poop to black tar.

Its popularity waned once The Lawrence Welk show went off the air. I think that was the only show they advertised on. Once all their viewers kicked the bucket the younger set had no interest in the stuff.

It's not cheap either. A 12 oz. bottle is $11.50 at Walgreens.

Wouldn't it be helpful for those whose 'Aunt Blood' has come for her monthly visit?
by Anonymous | reply 19 | February 25, 2018 11:44 AM |
What's the proof (alc content)?

Geritol was advertised on "The Goldbergs." starring Gertrude Berg in the 50s.

R14, when I was eight or nine my mother would send me to the store for Midol in the tin. When I was old enough to know what it was for, suddenly I was embarrassed to ask for it. Actually, it was for my father's migraines.

R21 here, Got my "tols" confused. Gertrude Berg promoted Rybutol, a high-potency B1 and B2 formula with11 vitamins and 9 minerals.

Sponsorship of "Twenty-One," as replicated in the movie "Quiz Show."

Geritol also sponsored "To Tell the Truth."

And "Ted Mack's Original Amateur Hour" (the forerunner of "America's Got Talent" and "Star Search.")
