Who is the Hottest Man in Music, Past or Present?

Who do you pick as the hottest man in the music world which includes all types of music - Rock, Pop, Basic Top 40, Soul, Rap, Country, Punk, Classical/whatever?

I'll start off with Mark Farner of Grand Funk Railroad. With that gorgeous, sexy long hair and the body of a demi-god he was smokin' hot!

Bowie was the most exciting, but was he "hot"?

by Anonymousreply 3February 24, 2018 1:04 AM

Hendrix wasn't handsome, but he got me sexually excited.

I think the answer must be some handsome, sexy and talented rocker but nobody pops out. Morrison I'm giving a hard pass. I am sure there is better.

by Anonymousreply 4February 24, 2018 1:07 AM

I seem to remember leafing through my aunt's old LPs and finding a Grand Funk album with all of them naked on the cover (with strategic elements obscuring the goods).

by Anonymousreply 5February 24, 2018 1:07 AM

Early 80s, I was jealous of that bitch Pat Benatar when she married. Nick Giraldo. He filled out a pair of jeans nicely.

by Anonymousreply 6February 24, 2018 1:10 AM

Was he hot to you, r3? That is the question.

For me, Yves Montand is incredibly sexy. He isn’t so well known as a singer outside of France, but he recorded hundreds of songs.

His voice is the sonic equivalent of bedroom eyes to me. And while he isn’t classically handsome, he has a magnetism that I can’t escape.

Bon Jovi - I think maybe universally hot.

by Anonymousreply 17February 24, 2018 1:47 AM

by Anonymousreply 23February 24, 2018 2:01 AM

Honorable mention: Larry Mullen Jr, U2 drummer. James Dean incarnate. Was 40s but looked 30 for a loooong time. He's tiny, maybe 5 feet and a bit. Always kept his svelte figure although he has facially aged now.

Adam Ant too. I wrote this elsewhere but I went to a restaurant in L.A. and spotted him sitting on the patio. He and his fellow diner got up to leave and we got put there and, I swear, I spent the whole meeting thinking about how my butt was where Adam's had been right before. I was very young so cut me some slack but, yes, he was just as hot in person as I imagined he would be. Always loved how he moved too.

Stewart Copeland

Jack White

Layne Staley

I think that Marvin Gaye was extremely handsome, but he did an interview back around 1980 in which he said that he found oral sex disgusting and that was a real turn off. Not because I think oral sex is a deal breaker, but because his stating this publically in an interview made me think he had some really dark issues with women.

Jonathan(Jay) Cain pf the Babys and later Journey is a gross fundie now married to uber fundie evangelist Paula White. He doesn't look good at all now. But he was extremely beautiful during the period of 1976-1988. There is a pic of him being interviewed by Dick Clark in '76 which I would love to post but I can't. He was an incredibly sweet man, very much a romantic and kind to the "little people" which to me is the ultimate determinate of someone's true character. He wrote the music to most of Journey's biggest hits. He was quite gay friendly, which made it even weirder when I learned of his late in life conversion to Xtianity. His first wife Tane' McClure(Doug's daughter) was a soft core porn star. He has a beautiful dick and he's tall...my two favorite things.

Never found Jim Morrison sexy in the least, his entire persona seemed so fake and calculated. Morrison was also drug addled, he was a major turn-off. I didn't even like his music.

Jimi Hendrix was loaded with sex appeal, he also had the balls to wear what was considered feminine clothing during a time when it wasn't 100% acceptable. Prince owed his entire fashion style to Hendrix.

Offsite Link
by Anonymousreply 243February 26, 2018 5:40 PM

R242, I agree with your assessment of the Doors. Tried to get into them because 80's bands I liked, The Cure and Echo and the Bunnymen were fans and recorded covers. Even a stuck clock is right twice a day so there are a handful of good Door songs but go any deeper and it's self-indulgent crap. Thank god punk came along and did away with the interminable guitar and drum solos of the late 60's and 70's. And that fucking famous Doors keyboard sound. Ray Manzarek played on a Echo and the Bunnymen song and ruined that one too.

There was also a huge revival of the Doors due to the Val Kilmer movie and it was de facto that the cool kids knew the Doors were legends. But one day after listening to the greatest hits album--where it was rarely great, I gave myself permission to not to give a toss about the Doors anymore.

Young George Harrison had an offputting unibrow. He only starting looking hot in 1965-66 or so, and then he topped being hot in 1973-74 when he got that horrific perm, and after was never hot again. Paul McCartney was hot from 1962-ish until the late 1980s (DILF hot in the 80s). John was only briefly hot in 1964-65, and again in 71-72 (after he cut the long greasy hair, stopped going heroin and took a shower).

I prefer vintage country: Cash, Dolly, Willie, Loretta, Waylon, Tammy etc. "Ring of Fire" is one of my fave songs of all time, I know all about country music.

The current crop of country singers all sound the same to me, they're as bad as pop trash like Taylor Swift. How can you compare them with the classic artists listed in this thread. It's not about people not listening to other types of music, I grew up listening to everything from classical to rock to R'nB to country to jazz. I had session musicians in my family, I can certainly tell good music from bad in pretty much most genres.

btw, it's clear you know little about pop, rock and R'n'B music from other eras. FYI, most of the people listed in this thread were extremely famous and would never be considered one-hit wonders.

Denny Doherty of The Mamas And The Papas was a hot babe. Both Mama Cass and Michelle Phillips fell in love with him.

Offsite Link
by Anonymousreply 332March 2, 2018 3:21 PM

Paul Parker had a few things going for him in the early 80s: very nice face and body, with that gay clone look that so many gay men copied and idealized at the time; decent singing voice; and a friendship with Patrick Cowley, whose synth magic gave Paul a couple of hits on the disco chart like this one. Paul survived and is still around, which a lot of the male musicians from that time and place (SF music scene) can't say, and he always seemed like a really nice guy.

R418 etc, let me guess, you're a "huge fan" of Carlos Ponce? One or two photos would suffice. ENOUGH!

by Anonymousreply 423March 4, 2018 10:27 PM

Also, r415, I had pretty much given up on pop music in the 1980s. Other than the Police, Talking Heads, and R.E.M., I don't know any individual band members or their names. By the time "Love Shack" was a hit, I was a basic Bernstein bitch, not a B-52s boy.

by Anonymousreply 424March 4, 2018 10:33 PM

R424, don't apologize for not knowing Keith Strickland by name or the band he was in. Most people don't remember the names of bands from many eras, they just know the names of the main stars of each band, such as Sting, Boy George, David Byrne etc. I was a big fan of The Specials and The English Beat, but I can't name more than three guys from each band!

R415 needs to STFU and stop trolling!

by Anonymousreply 425March 4, 2018 10:44 PM

Actually R423/R425, I've never heard a single Ponce song but I'm aware of his career (even though I don't speak a single word of Spanish). I've moved on from him & so should you (if you ignored me you'd see that I added the Kris Allen photos. I posted Carlos & Felipe to add to the lack of ethnic guys on here. I couldn't decide if I should post the younger or older pics so I just added them both because some guys on here like older men).

R424 Even if you had given up on pop music back then, the B-52's are one of the more popular bands here on the DL with multiple threads on them over the past decade. I was the original "music poll troll" & people kept requesting more of them so their favorite song could be voted on. I think I had to do 3 or 4 separate polls to please everyone on here. If you've been on the DL regularly the last couple of years, I can't imagine you not being aware of them unless you avoid all of the music threads as well.

Musicians have rarely been boner-creators for me. Ricky Nelson was one, though I was not really of boner age when I used to watch him on Ozzie & Harriet. Then there was Jim Morrison. Later, Stuart Copeland of the Police. Jackson Browne was cute, but not jerking-off material. I thought Billy Bragg was sexy, partly because he was sexy, and partly because of two of his songs, "Trust" and "Sexuality," from his Don't Try This at Home album.

Now, though I cannot stand the mouth and throat dribblings he calls "music," Shawn Mendes is truly beautiful. The hottest of the lot, really. How far we have fallen that people like this get to make music instead of people with actual musical talent. But who cares? He's pretty. (The DL theme song.)

R77 "rap" is NOT music.

The is thread is for men who were able to use their mouth to make a melody.

by Anonymousreply 482March 8, 2018 8:28 PM

What in the name of all things worth trumpeting about does Chet Baker have to do with rap, R482?

by Anonymousreply 483March 8, 2018 8:31 PM

R482, rap IS music.

My dad used to talk about an old time singer who used to "sing/talk", if I remember his name I will post it here. The first time my dad heard rap, he said to me, "That's not original so and so used to do that! And that was back in the 1940 and 1950s!" He then took out on old LP by the talk/singer and my dad was 100% correct.

Before you make some lame ass proclamation, do try to back if with some FACTS.

by Anonymousreply 484March 8, 2018 8:33 PM

R482 wrote R77 but meant R477.

by Anonymousreply 485March 8, 2018 8:57 PM

Riz's rap isn't about champagne and fucking groupies, his rap has always been political and topical. Posters like R482 only prove they are completely clueless about many forms of music, not just rap.

Music is not just about pop music, rock, show tunes and R'n'B. Creativity is everywhere in music, in all it's forms. Get a clue.

Have you ever heard the rap song "White Lines"? It's a series rap song about drug addiction.

R486 You're raving about something that interests you.

But I tell you that music needs a mouth to make melody. Rap needs a mouth to make monotony.

by Anonymousreply 490March 8, 2018 9:09 PM

Dave Gahan has never been particularly good looking, but he has the rock star "it" factor. He's in remarkably good shape considering what he was like in the 90's. He literally died for a few minutes from ODing once.

If only Ian McCulloch had taken the same route--the man doesn't look and sound anything like he was in the 80's. Everyone ages, that's fair enough but today's McCulloch bears little resemblance to the fella in the 80's. It's like two different people. Hope the ciggies, pint and drugs were worth it, Ian Mac.

[quote][R486] You're raving about something that interests you. But I tell you that music needs a mouth to make melody. Rap needs a mouth to make monotony

Raving? You got that from my posts? C'mon! Actually NO rap doesn't interest me all that much, yet I can differentiate between good and bad music from any genre. I do know that Queen Latifah and Run DMC were great rappers with really good memorable songs, they also had the sense to incorporate other forms of pop music into their songs, Run DMC incorporated rock music and it sure worked for them.

I prefer rock music and jazz, I also listen to avant grade jazz, classic country music and classical music. I did work in the music business, so I'm definitely open to many forms of musical expression. Like any other sort of music, there's good and bad rap. I despise 'musicians' such as Taylor Swift, she's talent free, has a fake image and doesn't represent good pop music at all, she's a poseur and cannot sing to save her life. Yet the sheeple have made her rich and famous.

I sure do know the difference between good and bad music. You also can't base music on how 'hot' the lead singer, or any band member, is.

by Anonymousreply 492March 8, 2018 10:25 PM

What do you think of Shawn Mendes, R492?

by Anonymousreply 493March 8, 2018 10:27 PM

Damn auto correct, that should be avant garde jazz.

And White Lines"? was a SERIOUS rap song about drug addiction.

Shawn Mendes? He has a good voice, but he's not my demographic, at least he's not Taylor Swift! I do like Demi Lovatto's voice.

[quote]Shawn Mendes? He has a good voice Credibility shot. I do like Demi Lovato's voice. Credibility dead.

Who the fuck are YOU to question credibility? Taste is subjective. Yet anyone can easily HEAR if a singer can actually sing. Are you really that much of an imbecile? Madonna cannot technically sing, yet she was able t makes millions based on total artifice, a strong image of being liberated and other nonsense. Without the elaborate stage productions and studio trickery, I assure you, no one would have cared if Madonna emerged as a singer strumming an acoustic guitar. Her voice is horrific.

Once again, Demi and Shawn can carry a tune. For young people who care about a popstar's life, Demi is much more real and relatable than spoiled woman as the entitled Taylor Swift. Demi's has drug problems and was a cutter, for many young people, they need to relate to a famous person's struggles. Taylor is nothing but a calculated fake spoiled 'singer', who has created her own romantic dramas so she can write some bad 'songs' about them.

I agree with the votes for Paul McCartney, nice thing about his wife being a photographer was shots like this, which is NOT bad for a late 1960's rocker who was fairly depressed at the time because his band was falling to pieces and really hadn't heard of exercise. :)

by Anonymousreply 502March 8, 2018 11:40 PM

Yeah well he's going to turn 76 in a few months so I think he can be given a break on the bad hair. He's in good shape(for his age), gives three hour concerts where the REST of the band gets a break for a couple of songs while he does some acoustic so if his hair is a mess, well, at least he dresses better for the most part than he did in 70's and 80's. I suppose it's a trade off, the hair is worse, but the clothes are better. LOL

R504, a few weeks ago, I saw an excellent XTC documentary on Showtime. Think it was on Showtime, might have been Starz.

Andy Partridge prefaced the documentary by stating there wasn't going to be any "sex or drugs" discussed "I am just going to talk about the music". Yet the documentary was fascinating. Andy talked about being an only child, taking Valium since he was 12, his crazy violent bi-polar mother, his absent dad who was in the Navy, being a completely self taught musician, quitting school and how when the hits started being written and sung by Colin how angry he became. You really need to check it out.

Handsome Gilmour has an aristocratic nose, straight brows and sensuous lips.

He's British. So he's probably got a beautiful speaking voice as well.

by Anonymousreply 517March 11, 2018 8:10 AM

Dave Gilmour is hardly from humble beginnings, he was born on March 6 1946 in Cambridge, England. His father, Douglas Gilmour, eventually became a senior lecturer in zoology at the University of Cambridge, and his mother, Sylvia (née Wilson), trained as a teacher and later worked as a film editor for the BBC. At the time of Gilmour's birth they lived in Trumpington, Cambridgeshire, but in 1956, after several relocations, the couple moved their family to Grantchester Meadows.

Dave has EIGHT children! Gilmour's first marriage was to American-born model and artist Virginia "Ginger" Hasenbein in July 1975. The couple had four children, three girls and one boy.

In 1994, he married novelist, lyricist and journalist Polly Samson. His best man was his teenage friend and Pink Floyd album artwork designer Storm Thorgerson. The couple have four children: Gilmour's adopted son Charlie (born 1989 to Samson and poet Heathcote Williams), Joe (born 1995), Gabriel (born 1997) and Romany (born 2002).

Gilmour is godfather to actress Naomi Watts, whose father Peter Watts was a Pink Floyd roadie during the 1970s. Who knew! Gilmour lives with his family on a farm near Wisborough Green, Sussex, and also has a home at Hove. He also spends time at his recording studio houseboat Astoria near Hampton Court.

I list em and visualize em in my mind and I stop thinking about wanting to sleep and then I AM asleep. so kind to see and read fans of Paul McCartney's good looks. I love him and his music dearly, so somehow that made it almost impossible to ever think of him as a sexual object. but yeah he sure was purdy, for several decades.

No, the singer was older than Arthur. This singer was already quite old when he appeared on Johnny Carson. He was an old white guy. He's dead now. I'll have to ask my parents I talk to them, one of them should remember. IIRC, when he was on Carson, he always had a cigar. No, its not George Burns.

R183 Alex James was very pretty for very long, even beautiful in the way of waifs & sylph for several years.

There was a sulking quality to his sultriness, wasn't there? To me he sometimes came across like a gloomy malcontented closet-case, perpetually bored & exhausted just thinking about the state of the world. Then again the rest of Blur were all like that until the Millennium hit, as well. Gen X ennui, I guess.

It still surprises me that he married a woman and had a passel of children, and hides a sleazy history with groupies. In the mid-period of Blue he seemed to be in love with Dave (Rowntree, Blur's drummer), who seemed to be trying very hard not to notice this.
