It's official-Justin Timberlake has FLOPPED
1. The reviews of his Superbowl performance were mostly negative for both his performance and of course the choice to incorporate a video of Prince into it.
2. His new album did go to #1 but so far has sold 367,000 copies, not even gold yet and sure as hell not platinum.
3. His singles are tanking big time. "Filthy" and "Say Something" (Chris Stapleton) did both reach #9 on the hot 100 but have been dropping like rocks since then.
4. The media has stopped talking about him and his music altogether.
The "prince of pop" is OVA at least for now.

R1 people called Lady Gaga's "Art Pop" and "Joanne" flops but they both got to #1 as well. She didn't get any #1 singles though. Timberlake's recent singles are flopping

In today's age, I don't know if top 10 really matters as much today since single sales are so powerful Id expect anything under a top 5 hit to be underperforming. Getting a number one album spot is super easy these days for anyone with mild name recognition, good PR, and a calendar.
An artist of his caliber should be performing better, but I guess this is long overdue karma. I'm happy, because he received way to much praise for the deathly bore that was his 20/20 album, what garbage. Oh and the black audience and some whites are done with him so his movies sales will take some hits.
I suggest Justing move to a nice streaming comedy show to revive his image.

A #1 album can be a flop. Janet's Unbreakable album went to #1 but it was still a huge flop.
Of course Justin's flop album has already sold more copies in a couple weeks than Unbreakable has to date. So Justin isn't as big a flop as Janet.

r11 that's fine since Janet is almost a decade and a half older than him and did her thing in the 90s Without Nsync, which he has tossed aside, his career doesn't even touch Janet's. Hell, Justin Bieber has a more relevant career at 23 than JT.

Who is his core audience these days? Those girls who were into N'SYNC and who propelled his solo career to success have all grown out. They are probably suburban fraus who've graduated to Adele and Sam Smith. He's now in a similar position that Britney was in 7-8 years ago: the record is initially doing OK following a reasonably successful lead single with some guest star du jour on it and then in a few months nobody talks about it any longer.

Justin doesn't have many albums under his belt or many hits. He's also long in the tooth. He's like Christina Aguilera. He wasn't smart when it came to his career. You can't just disappear for years on end and expect to come back on top.

You can get a #1 single with as little as 25 thousand sales and a tiny bit of airplay.
A few hundred thousand for an album is great these days. It's not 1979 where you could sell two million records and not hit the top ten.

R49 his ego is so big he thinks he still could. In the past it was OK. There were several years between his other albums but the public still ate it up. The first signs of floppage happened when he released 2 albums in 2013. The first one did very well and that's when he was being heralded as the "prince of pop". The second album sold pretty well but the singles didn't chart as well. Then he got that #1 song in 2016 from that kids' movie but this album is further proof of his decline.

Threads like this remind me that most of this board really is over 40 or has very little idea how things go in the music business today.

r57 there are one and two-hit wonders from the 70s and 80s who invested well enough to STILL be living pretty comfortable lives. Record sales in those decades were huge, and the money a person could make in the music business was insane.
Case in point: When Donna Summer died in 2012, she was worth $75 million, even though she hadn't had a big hit song in a more than two decades.

R60, true. The top albums of the last few years have sold 2-4 million total units (hard copied, digital, streaming, etc. combined). 20 years ago that would be a flop for any well known artist.
The last legit blockbuster album was Adele's 25 in 2015. No one has sold anything close to that in a decade, except Adele herself with 21.

Justin's day has come and gone. He should just bow out gracefully. That's the problem with some of these entertainers. They don't know when to hangem up and stop making new music for the public and just tour every few years. They have plenty of money so their definitely not lacking there. Just go and enjoy you're life, family/friends, and wealth. And give back since so much has been given to you.
That's how it should be done. I'm talking musicians specifically. Actors are fine. It's musicians who don't know when to step down.

I have his Man of the Woods and the tracks on the second half are the really good ones. He should have released a couple more of those as singles. "Breeze Off the Pond" is the best one and would be a big hit but of course it is more laid back and traditional pop than "Filthy" or "Supplies."

You can’t ask for a bigger promotional platform than headlining the Super Bowl in advance of the new album. Which all but guaranteed opening at #1. But the actual sales volume was small relative to his stature and the roll out. I think the whole “Man of the Woods” aesthetic was really a turn off, especially when the music was ultimately more of the same from his solo catalogue. No big evolution. So he should fire the creative director immediately. He’s also just entering that weird part of a career where he won’t notch huge sales anymore. He’s in commercial limbo and it’s not gonna get prettier from here. He thinks his talent is far bigger than the reality. He’s not Michael. Or Prince. Or George Michael. I could keep going...

So he released SoulMate last night and those dolts on The Today Show this morning said “and it’s already being called the song of the summer.” By who?!?!? I listened to the song and it’s starts with “summer starts...now.” Justin will do ANYTHING to have a song of the summer but when will he learn that it can’t be engineered in a recording studio? To be the real song of the summer- it has to be organic and have momentum that is entirely driven by the listening public. He tried so hard with that thirst trap of a song “Can’t Stop the Feeling” and clearly won’t be satisfied until he nails it. SoulMate ain’t it. Sorry, JT. Go the fuck away, you empty pop, appropriating vessel.

I never thought much of him. I didn’t like N’sync or the curly hair.
He had some pop hits I really liked, both are linked above, but he himself never appealed to me. I thought he sang in a very high key and had a bro personality. Ehh, it just never meshed with me.
His movies have sucked. He’s better in drama than comedy though. I don’t know who told attaractive people that can’t act, especially women that COMEDY is their balliwick. It seems like every middling actor in Hollywood turns to and settles in comedy when drama and action don’t work.
I think he may still work in movies but it’s not 2004 anymore. I think his audience is still there while Beyoncé never lost fans really. Just kept gaining.

Well, you can't fault him or even single him out for this. That's how the music business is these days. The only acts who more more physical copies than streams are country and oldies who put out new albums (Streisand, Neil Diamond, The Eagles, etc.) If you look at any of the top acts you'll see their stream equivalents far outpace their actual sales. This is why music is in the toilet. Thanks, internet.

Justin's just gonna keep getting more and more irrelevant.
We live in an age where streaming is becoming the most important part of total sales compared to other forms like physical sales, especially with places like Best Buy not stocking physical copies anymore, and the Billboard 100 will keep changing to address this. Like Gangnam Style peaked at #2 despite being the hottest YT video at the time but Harlem Shake reached #1: BB100 changed the algorithm to make YT views more important. And Christina's Liberation just did great in physical sales, especially for a female pop star over 35 who's been in the game for like two decades. But apparently the age of her fans is showing because her streaming sales were absolutely pitiful, which doesn't bode well for her because that also means she's not getting new younger fans. Same thing is gonna happen with JT.

So he had a flop album. He is still wildly successful, had the biggest song of the summer a few years ago, and could easily pull off a successful international tour. How many of these flash in the pan streaming youngsters will be relevant in not even 5 5 but 2 yrs from now.

It’s no surprise that his teen idol days are over, he’s seriously like 40 by now.
He’s going out like Liberace - he’ll be able to maintain star status and career with a hardcore fanbase for as long as he wants, no matter how weird & tweaked he gets.
Maybe when his mother dies he’ll come out.

He has always been a phony fuck. His liberal "borrowing" from other better artists, his punk non-response to the Janet debacle his highly-affected and nauseating earnestness/cutenes. Awful. He always drew HEAVILY from Michael Jackson -- just a marginally more talented Corey Feldman -- and is an actor in the same way that Frankie Avalon is. Growing up in the '80s, you knew who the real singers and bands were, and who the novelty pop confections were. It's mystifying to see the people who are taken seriously now. Rick Astley was written off as a studio creation and has demonstrably better pipes than Timberlake.

Bruno Mars has definitely replaced Justin Timberlake, and thank god. After his saccharine first album, Bruno Mars made his music all about the funk and his music is way more interesting than anything Timberlake did, even the stuff on Justin's second album (the one with Timbaland on it).And he's a way better performer and not a has-been.

Wow, looking at the charts, singles and albums- the music industry is a fucking mess. The album chart is filled with catalog titles because nothing new is selling at all and people aren't streaming full albums. Billboard counts an album sale if you stream 4 songs off the same album. That's insanity.
And the singles chart is a joke because it's ruled by streams and you have album cuts on the chart simply by virtue of a few people being lazy and letting spotify play on.
And you have people like Beyonce who have won, what, 33 Grammy awards?? Talk about devaluing something.
It's time to end the music industry. It had a good run.

Please give me examples of good music happening right now. Everything has so much drums and guitars you can't even hear the singer. Give me Patti Page or Judy Garland with a piano. That's real music! Not these new Beatles from England. Music has never been more generic than it has this decade.

R181 The indie girl way of singing drives me nuts. A few years ago some vine mocked the "indie girl" way of singing that was starting to get popular and now pretty much all the newer pop stars are singing like it. Here's a girl who's demonstrating how they sing.
Selena Gomez basically changed her entire way of pronouncing things in some of her songs. Halsey, Bebe Rexha, Lorde, Jessie Reyez, Troye, etc all do it. So annoying.

Music acts outside of Taylor Swift and Adele don't sell many albums these days. It's not just Timberlake, though his new backwood bro shtick with this new album turned a lot of people off (myself included, though I liked "Filthy"). He really should have stopped with 2020 part 1 and then just coasted by on his acting career, but maybe he'll bounce back. His voice is grating to me, but he's an excellent performer.
On a random note, as someone who always felt Jessica Biel was underrated it's nice to see her career in better shape than her husband's. "The Sinner" was excellent and it's nice to see her get some genuine acclaim for it.

The indie voice is absolutely horrible. A bunch of followers they all are. I'm a millennial and friends with a lot of Gen Z and only brain dead people like today's music. I like a song here and there but nothing i love. We all love old music and collect vinyl. It's cool.

I sat behind him on a flight years ago (decades ago: it was on TWA) and he and his momager were in the first row left at the bulkhead in First. He must have been 17 or so and all I could see was his nappy hair when I'd get up to get something out of the overhead compartment. The FA's were paying a lot of attention to them so I asked one - "who are they? - and she told me, "Justin Timberlake and his mom." I had no clue whatsoever who he was then or what he did or why he was important. Just looked and seemed like a little kid with a perm.
Until the next day when he was on the front page of the local paper - in town to do a concert for racial peace. Nice thing to do, sure, but he didn't impress me then and hasn't since. Go figure.
