Wow, I didn't realize DL was so hateful and intolerant. I thought this was a place for gays and the like-minded to congregate. That movie was TOO long. I didn't understand Armie's take on the character - couldn't see any verisimilitude to any young Jewish man I've ever met. Maybe just a bad performance. He's 30 and looked it, too. I do think being thin for this gave him a lovely lithe body. Such long legs. He's handsome but doesn't seem to play any compelling roles. The Chalamet boy was good but not stellar. The best thing about the movie was watching without subtitles and trying to make out the Italian. Chalamet was 20 when he played the role, not pedophilia. His character was 17 and he looked that age, not pedophilia. Hammer was 29 when he played the role and didn't look anywhere close to 40. Get a grip.

It wasn't a poor casting choice, it was a poor/negligent production decision not to send him to the gym a couple of months before the filming started. I have never seen a chest so undeveloped on a 20-year old before. It almost looks like a medical issue.

But considering the director didn't hold an audition process and other producers seemingly didn't give a shit about that, you can surmise an indie movie production is quite different to a big studio one.

When it come to a visual medium like movies yes visuals do matter. I've said this before I put the blame on Luca. He obviously wanted to enhance the age/size difference. Yes I don't think Armie looks 40 but he does look around 35 and Timmy's ultra thin body makes him look thinner, shorter, younger than he is. Scarily I have a suspicion that this wasn't an accident. That's why I'm glad Luca is being ignored for director. Only James Ivory and the briliiant Timothee are getting award buzz for a reason.

Luca hasn't been ignored for director. He was nominated for BAFTA and won at the Los Angeles Film Critics Association. Far more than he got with any of his other films. Also as the film is nominated for Best Picture at the Oscars, he is an Oscar nominee as one of the producers.

I don't think it's obvious that he wanted to enhance the difference at all. No director with a brain in their head would deny Chalamet that role and Armie is someone he's clearly been waiting for the opportunity to work with. As it worked out, he was right because no other actors would have had the chemistry they have together whilst simultaneously pulling off great individual performances and looking similar to how the characters are described in the book.
