I've never been able to find out for sure. The series frequently fires people who just never catch on, but when Killam was fired he was being given more air time than any other male star, and more air time than anyone on the show at all except Kate McKinnon/ I thought he was genuinely funny and very cute.
Why was Taran Killam fired from SNL a few years back?

he was certainly a first string player in a period of SNL in decline, which of course, is not the first period of SNL in decline. He probably was overused due to his being better than a lot of his fellow prime time players, but that is understandable.
I continue to hope for maybe one more golden, sustained period of SNL. But I also realize that it may not happen.

I miss him; thought he was cute too. I remember reading an article about his end w/SNL: Lorne took him off guard by sharing information that his contract was not to be renewed. He allegedly read about it in a magazine before either his agent or Lorne told him personally. Technically he was not fired, but it was suggested Lorne did not get on well w/him. His name is so funny, very apropos for a coliseum fighter, or an MMA guy.

I did, r2. No luck.

he's great; he played a guy in his early 20s in a dating app or phone line sketch on SNL and he says : "I'm in my early 20s, so I'll be straight for another three years."

r5, none of those stories if you click on them actually gives you a clear or actual reason.

I thought he was the funniest.

I believe he requested time off to do a movie. They went back and forth over how much time until Lorne said "fuck it. Release him"

Taran made a guest cameo on ‘AP Bio’ this week...the executive producer of that show is Lorne.

Lorne's had a weird history with letting cast members out to make movies. If I'm not mistaken, it was a factor in Lovitz leaving. He calmed down, though, and let Mike Myers miss a large chunk of 1992-93 to film So I Married an Axe Murderer.

he musta pissed lorne off somehow. He was one of the best.
by Anonymous | reply 16 | March 1, 2018 1:32 AM |
Not at all cute and only competent with the comedy. There was nothing distinctive about him or his work. He did it, sure. But he was never much more than a good anchor for the scenes.

He's adorable and it's not a coincidence that Dr Evil and the evil pharmaceutical CEO in Kids in Hall are imitations of Lorne.

He was full of himself and his ego was starting to create problems. When he made a bunch of demands for time off to do a movie, Lorne got tired of it and they just let him go. Also, if they'd jumped through hoops for him, next thing would be Kate McKinnon asking for a half season off to do some other movie. Lorne was sending a message and getting rid of an egomaniac at the same time.
He's the new Kate Jackson.

The movie he made with Arnold Schwartznegger was good. HOpe he takes off as a director.

Basically, what R19 and R21 said. He was a 1st string player but at the same time he never hit the popularity level of top SNL players like Tina Fey, Will Ferrell or Jimmy Fallon so he was expendable.
His contract only had a year left and he wouldn't have been extending it anyway.

His wife is way too pretty for him. Is he packing? Is he Canadian?

He's American. From California.

What's the matter with the name Taran? It's Irish Gaelic. It means "thunder".

Lorne Michaels is a thief He stole the original idea for SNL from national lampoon as well as most of the original cast lineup from them. They had been doing sketches on radio for national lampoon.
