Does Anyone Find John Oliver Irritating?

His voice drives me nuts and there's something so phony about him.

by Anonymousreply 93February 24, 2018 4:26 PM

I gave up on him years ago. Bill Maher more recently. I don’t miss either.

by Anonymousreply 1February 17, 2018 10:37 PM

OP and R1 I see you Donald.

by Anonymousreply 2February 17, 2018 10:41 PM

Yes. I like the idea of John Oliver and I like the things he says and does, but I just can't bring myself to watch him. A little goes a long way.

by Anonymousreply 3February 17, 2018 10:41 PM

Big John Oliver fan here, so no, I don’t find him irritating at all.

by Anonymousreply 4February 17, 2018 10:42 PM

Extremely. I also think he is ugly..

by Anonymousreply 5February 17, 2018 10:43 PM

He's shouting to the choir.

by Anonymousreply 6February 17, 2018 10:43 PM

Loathe him and wish he'd go away.

by Anonymousreply 7February 17, 2018 10:44 PM

100% insufferable.

by Anonymousreply 8February 17, 2018 10:46 PM

The John Oliver show is fucking great, we are better for having it on the air.

by Anonymousreply 9February 17, 2018 10:48 PM

Yes , his voice bothers me and the cadence of it. And usually go gaga for the brits.

by Anonymousreply 10February 17, 2018 10:52 PM

YES!

by Anonymousreply 11February 17, 2018 10:54 PM

We share the same jacked teefs so I support him, though I haven't thought about his brit stank sleeve or his mostly likely hairy anus.

by Anonymousreply 12February 17, 2018 10:54 PM

He is just acting british. They are all like that. Loathsome, repulsive fuckers.

by Anonymousreply 13February 17, 2018 11:02 PM

I'm British, and I fucking hate him.

I hate his pathetic 'professional englishman' act, shucking and jiving thing he does for the Americans, It's nauseating.

Loads of washed up Brits go over there and do it playing up stereotypes for attention, no one's heard of him over here until he got big in the US.

See also Craig Ferguson, Cordon, Piers Morgan ect.

by Anonymousreply 14February 17, 2018 11:15 PM

Piss-poor Jon Stewart wannabe. And it was bad enough when Stewart did that shtick.

by Anonymousreply 15February 17, 2018 11:21 PM

I never watched more than 5 min. I don't like listening to a foreigner lecturing to me about what is wrong with my country etc. fuck him

by Anonymousreply 16February 17, 2018 11:23 PM

He doesn't do Jon Stewart's thing. The Daily Show was more of a straight-forward comedy. John Oliver actually dives into a topic each week and tries to do some real journalism and reporting.

by Anonymousreply 17February 17, 2018 11:31 PM

no

he is brilliant, funny and wins an emmy ever year dammit

by Anonymousreply 18February 17, 2018 11:31 PM

He's great. I like him.

by Anonymousreply 19February 17, 2018 11:36 PM

His voice is annoying.

What of his behavior constitutes shucking & jiving?

by Anonymousreply 20February 17, 2018 11:37 PM

Appreciate that he has some talent and that his heart is in the right place, but yes, irritating is the right word.

by Anonymousreply 21February 17, 2018 11:38 PM

I love john oliver. glad his show is coming back sunday from hiatus.

by Anonymousreply 22February 17, 2018 11:50 PM

I like him. He does a good job on what ever topic he covers. BUT, I find his voice annoying and hearing him complain for a half an hour on the same subject gets really, really annoying. His show would be better if he covered 2 topics during an episode, instead of just one

And I'm fucking sick of all the British actors and other entertainers all coming over to America. Every movie is full of British actors

by Anonymousreply 23February 18, 2018 12:06 AM

I like him, always found him to be kinda cute, and glad that his show is a success.

That said, I have heard through the grapevine (i.e., from a friend who knows certain people who've worked with him) that he's kind of a jerk in real life, which, if true, was somewhat disappointing to hear. But they can't all be sweethearts I guess, so whatever.

by Anonymousreply 24February 18, 2018 12:22 AM

It's my long-form info-tainment show. I read and watch snippets daily and I think it's very adult of me to concentrate on one topic for at least a half-hour.

Plus, he's one of the few ferrinners R23 hates who hasn't put on the Ferrinner 50 since coming to this country. John would look creepy as fuck if he were fat. He looks like a face-gainer - like Ted Kennedy.

by Anonymousreply 25February 18, 2018 12:27 AM

I agreed with him when I used to watch him but his show is just too loud. I stopped watching because of that.

by Anonymousreply 26February 18, 2018 12:30 AM

No OP, he's terrific.

by Anonymousreply 27February 18, 2018 12:30 AM

I agree with everything he says but, yes, he is extremely irritating. Also, speaking to r14's point. Notice how all the Brits that move to Hollywood and have lived in America never lose their accent or even allow it to soften a little? Stuart Varney has been in America since the 60s. It's a minstrel show.

by Anonymousreply 28February 18, 2018 12:58 AM

Nope. Don't find him irritating or phony.

by Anonymousreply 29February 18, 2018 1:00 AM

I wonder if Oliver is planning an expose of Breitbart. Their trolls suddenly have a hard on for him.

by Anonymousreply 30February 18, 2018 1:09 AM

No, actually I like him a lot. I think he's smart and funny.

by Anonymousreply 31February 18, 2018 1:12 AM

He does that old Daily Show “trick” of trying to sell a mediocre joke by telling the same punchline three times in a row.

The first time, he calmly states the punchline.

The second time, he rewords it to make it more extreme.

The third time, he screams it and sometimes bangs on the desk.

By this point, the audience is laughing.

Once you see this trick in action, you’ll never unsee it.

by Anonymousreply 32February 18, 2018 1:14 AM

Love him. Glad he'll be back tomorrow night

by Anonymousreply 33February 18, 2018 1:28 AM

[quote]I don't like listening to a foreigner lecturing to me about what is wrong with my country

He is married to an American, has a green card and is working on becoming a US citizen. America is his home now.

by Anonymousreply 34February 18, 2018 1:32 AM

R28 Ha you know the first time I heard Stuart Varney's voice years ago I thought he was an American doing an 'english' accent impersonation. He's from Derbyshire, people there don't talk anything like that, he didn't go to a posh boarding school either so he must have started doing it when he moved to the US.

by Anonymousreply 35February 18, 2018 1:36 AM

[quote] His voice drives me nuts and there's something so phony about him.

So overall he is no different from any of the other talk show clones.

by Anonymousreply 36February 18, 2018 1:46 AM

Another trick is the tangent joke. He does this about 10 times every episode. It's really distracting and drives me nuts.

by Anonymousreply 37February 18, 2018 1:54 AM

He shouts all the time, so I don't watch his show. I hate shouting.

by Anonymousreply 38February 18, 2018 1:58 AM

What's the "tangent joke" R37?

by Anonymousreply 39February 18, 2018 2:10 AM

I agree he’s grating no matter how right he may be. He tries too hard and seems to have fallen in love with himself. Deeply.

by Anonymousreply 40February 18, 2018 2:15 AM

His delivery is like listening to a speed freak for 30 minutes. I like the show, but he needs to learn that the dial doesn't need to be turned all the way to 11 the whole time.

by Anonymousreply 41February 18, 2018 2:17 AM

He is the Rachel Maddow of comedy. A+ on the content, but the delivery sucks. So hyper. Colbert has the same problem.

by Anonymousreply 42February 18, 2018 2:20 AM

He’s too twee and has a sense of humor I can’t pinpoint other than to say it seems to be pervasive among a lot of millennials and it grates on my nerves.

But I appreciate a lot of the longer segments he has done that draw attention to what investigating news teams should look into but never do.

by Anonymousreply 43February 18, 2018 2:37 AM

Too fucking loud. I'm interested in the content, but there's no way I'm going to listen to that manner of speaking at that volume. Daily Show w/Jon Stewart also got really, really loud the final several years. Samantha Bee's Full Frontal shtick also wears thin before the episode is over.

by Anonymousreply 44February 18, 2018 2:40 AM

I agree with him politically but find him a hectoring bore

by Anonymousreply 45February 18, 2018 2:40 AM

Yes, dial turned to 11 the whole time, plus they must give out a bunch of Red Bulls to everyone in the audience. I think he's probably doing good work but I can't watch him.

by Anonymousreply 46February 18, 2018 3:45 AM

[quote] He’s too twee and has a sense of humor I can’t pinpoint other than to say it seems to be pervasive among a lot of millennials and it grates on my nerves.

Do you mean smirking and sneering, inter-spaced with the word "fuck" thrown around as many times as possible?

by Anonymousreply 47February 18, 2018 3:50 AM

r14 You lost me at ect.

by Anonymousreply 48February 18, 2018 3:59 AM

I like John Oliver and his show, if I didn't I just wouldn't watch it.

by Anonymousreply 49February 18, 2018 4:21 AM

I liked when he filled in on the Daily Show, and sometimes have liked his show. But the preachiness has gone off the charts. The worst was when he 'confronted' Dustin Hoffman at the 92y to score some twitter points.

by Anonymousreply 50February 18, 2018 4:38 AM

His show needs a cast. One or two others to break up the monotony of too much shouting Oliver. Save that shit for last third or so.

by Anonymousreply 51February 18, 2018 6:31 AM

Predictable, aggrieved-Englishman schtick, which other people have done for decades. He's right when it comes to the issues he addresses, but he is goddamn insufferable.

by Anonymousreply 52February 18, 2018 7:10 AM

Love him AND his voice

by Anonymousreply 53February 18, 2018 7:25 AM

[quote]I hate his pathetic 'professional englishman' act, shucking and jiving thing he does for the Americans, It's nauseating.

What does this even mean? You shuck oysters and a jive is an American dance, neither of which puts me in mind of a “professional Englishman”.

by Anonymousreply 54February 18, 2018 7:55 AM

He's irritating and reminds of another irritating loudmouth old-style English 'entertainer' named "Max Miller, The Cheeky Chappie".

Offsite Link
by Anonymousreply 55February 18, 2018 8:28 AM

As opposed to Bill Maher and Steven Colbert? No.

He's progressive, not "brogressive" i.e. an asshole.

by Anonymousreply 56February 18, 2018 8:31 AM

R56 those two I also agree with politically but find obnoxious. Rachel Maddow too. I'm sad that journalism has become comedy routines.

by Anonymousreply 57February 18, 2018 3:29 PM

He's a pompous little mole person

Offsite Link
by Anonymousreply 58February 18, 2018 3:32 PM

I don't believe he will become a us citizen. He's gonna give up free health care in U.K. ? Plus USA tax all you income, every where in the world.

by Anonymousreply 59February 18, 2018 3:34 PM

John Oliver rocks. He's hilarious and right about the issues.

Donald Trump is irritating.

Everything that comes out of John Oliver's mouth is the truth. Everything that comes out of Donald Trump's fat mouth is a fatter lie or a self-serving truth.

OP's naked partisanship isn't fooling anyone or taking viewers away from John Oliver.

by Anonymousreply 60February 18, 2018 4:52 PM

OP, you missed a few ounces of Russian hooker pee in Donald Trump's flabby ass crack.

Go lick 'em up!

by Anonymousreply 61February 18, 2018 4:53 PM

Uh, R60/R61, who here said that we supported Trump? My guess is that nobody on this thread does. Just because we dislike John Oliver doesn't mean we disagree with him.

by Anonymousreply 62February 18, 2018 5:24 PM

R60 you don't get it, do you? You can agree with someone politically but find their delivery tiresome.

by Anonymousreply 63February 18, 2018 5:29 PM

R60 is another example that stupidity knows no political party.

by Anonymousreply 64February 18, 2018 5:30 PM

Oliver' show is terrific in its substantive reporting of issues. It fails in the jokes between segments that fall flat most of the time. Leave that to Trevor Noah, he does it best.

by Anonymousreply 65February 18, 2018 5:39 PM

Agreed, R65. His content is insightful, but I can't deal with his presentation. I wish he would stop to take a breath once in a while and I'd like him to slow down to a reasonable speed. I bet the cameramen stand behind a spit-guard.

by Anonymousreply 66February 18, 2018 5:44 PM

Extremely irritating, loud and ugly. His shrieky delivery is one loud monotone and I get annoyed at his US bashing. However, his bits are well written, well researched and funny. Too bad they can't replace his show with someone else.

by Anonymousreply 67February 18, 2018 5:50 PM

His wife is a Republican.

by Anonymousreply 68February 18, 2018 9:14 PM

R55 Here is that irritating, fast-talking man

Offsite Link
by Anonymousreply 69February 21, 2018 10:38 PM

Love him and I love the show.

by Anonymousreply 70February 21, 2018 10:57 PM

[quote] I'm sad that journalism has become comedy routines.

It can't anything else. 𝘙𝘦𝘱𝘰𝘳𝘵𝘪𝘯𝘨 is when the source tells you what happened. 𝘑𝘰𝘶𝘳𝘯𝘢𝘭𝘪𝘴𝘮 is when the source tells you what they think about what happened, and what you better think too if you don't want to be a terrible person.

by Anonymousreply 71February 21, 2018 11:01 PM

FWIW, I went to a taping of his show and even the lowest level and most-hectic job employees seemed to be enjoying themselves. He also had a great repartee with the staff in the limited interactions I saw. That's usually a good sign. He didn't come out until they started the show though, so I didn't seem much of him outside the on-camera persona.

I had a similar experience at a taping of the old Colbert Report--staff seemed to genuinely like him and liked working there. Stephen came out to talk to the audience before taping and was super nice, telling a cute story about electing a class pope in the Sunday School class he taught (this was around the time of Benedict getting elected Pope).

by Anonymousreply 72February 21, 2018 11:02 PM

Extremely. I thought he made a fool of himself going after Dustin Hoffman at the Wag the Dog screening before Christmas I think.

Remember when he dared Trump to run? Careful what you wish for asshole.

by Anonymousreply 73February 23, 2018 10:29 PM

[quote]I don't like listening to a foreigner lecturing to me about what is wrong with my country etc. fuck him.

This. If you have so many issues with the US, then don't fucking live here.

Also, I can't stand listening to people who constantly shout, it's so irritating. And he's repulsive to look at.

by Anonymousreply 74February 23, 2018 10:41 PM

[quote] Notice how all the Brits that move to Hollywood and have lived in America never lose their accent or even allow it to soften a little?

No, I haven't, actually.

by Anonymousreply 75February 23, 2018 10:42 PM

I find him disingenuous and hypocritical especially after it came out that he used a tax loophole made famous by Trump to purchase his $10 million dollar Manhattan apartment. This was after he did a show complaining rich people weren't paying their fair share of taxes. In the end, he's just an comedian reading lines off a teleprompter written by his writing staff.

by Anonymousreply 76February 23, 2018 10:45 PM

The rhetorical tricks (such as irreverent pop culture Juxtaposition to their serious point) they all honed on Daily Show, are tired and maybe counter-productive. Overall I like him and the show is short and only 1x a week and limited seasons, so I enjoy watching.

by Anonymousreply 77February 23, 2018 10:46 PM

No OP - I love the guy! Think he’s funny and smart and on-point. So pleased his show’s back from hiatus!

But if we’re wanting to talk about truly annoying, awful tv personalities -

How bout hannity and those morons on Fox & friends?

I can’t stand a moment of any them. They make me wanna throw a brick through the television. I only hope that at some stage - when this national nightmare finally draws to a close - that there’s something there to indict them on. Spreading their lies and spewing their venom and propaganda - Tokyo Rose and Lied Haw Haw had nothing on them! Traitors. Scum.

by Anonymousreply 78February 23, 2018 10:57 PM

I'm British.

I'm astonished the Americans bought him.

He has a sort of suburban accent, in fact.

by Anonymousreply 79February 23, 2018 11:11 PM

R79 he never pretends to be posh.

by Anonymousreply 80February 23, 2018 11:12 PM

Who said he did?

by Anonymousreply 81February 23, 2018 11:13 PM

Nope, still not irritating, still terrific.

by Anonymousreply 82February 24, 2018 2:45 AM

LOVE him! Everything about him.

by Anonymousreply 83February 24, 2018 3:01 AM

Amazing coincidence that we get this obviously bogus thread thrashing John Oliver right before he wins the lawsuit against him from that coal ... guy.

r84 you can be a liberal but dislike bloviating, shouting jackasses like John Oliver. Also, he's REALLY hard to look at.

by Anonymousreply 85February 24, 2018 3:01 PM

I don't agree with anything you said.

by Anonymousreply 86February 24, 2018 3:32 PM

[quote] Predictable, aggrieved-Englishman schtick, which other people have done for decades.

Aggrieved Englishman? Really? Pray tell which "other people" have used an "aggrieved Englishman schtick" for "decades."

by Anonymousreply 87February 24, 2018 3:38 PM

He acted like Macklemore was terrible. Of all the bad rappers why pick on him?

by Anonymousreply 88February 24, 2018 3:57 PM

[quote] I'm astonished the Americans bought him

Are you indeed? What did we buy from John Oliver? Please tell us, because you're so knowledgable, what did John Oliver sell us? A tv show? Like Geordie Shore? Jim'll Fix It? Snog, Marry, Avoid? Eastenders and other brilliant British tv?

by Anonymousreply 89February 24, 2018 4:05 PM

Not funny, not insightful, irritating beyond words. He should be deported.

by Anonymousreply 90February 24, 2018 4:06 PM

Something about someone with an English accent telling the American people what’s wrong with America is irritating...same reaction to Piers Morgan.

by Anonymousreply 91February 24, 2018 4:15 PM

John Oliver rocks. He's married to an American, R90, so suck it. I don't care how silly he gets, he can rag on all he wants.

by Anonymousreply 92February 24, 2018 4:25 PM

Deport them both.
