Big profile of Jake Shears in the NY Times

Fun facts I did not know: Dan Savage and Terry Miller were his mentors in Seattle, and he used to date Anderson Cooper for several months.

[quote] In his memoir, he writes of sinking into a depression, which his new friend Elton John tried to assuage by shutting down a Dior Homme store and buying him the entire collection.

by Anonymousreply 1February 17, 2018 5:38 PM

[quote] [Shears] and Mr. Moukarbel, a filmmaker, were living in a TriBeCa loft, where they threw rowdy house parties attended by friends including Calvin Klein, Sandra Bernhard and Rufus Wainwright. “There would be too many people, and they would run out of ice early on,” Mr. [Anderson] Cooper said. “The music was fun, but it was always too loud and the police would be called. I always stayed five minutes and then felt way too old and not cool enough to be there.”

by Anonymousreply 2February 17, 2018 5:39 PM

[quote] Mr. Moukarbel’s work was pulling him westward (he directed documentaries about Banksy and Lady Gaga), so they gave up their New York life and bought a Streamline Moderne-style house in Los Feliz for $1.92 million. “I had nothing going on. Just partying a lot,” Mr. Shears said. (He celebrated his 35th birthday with a disco foam party in the backyard.)

Shallowness that comes across as adorable when someone is a cute twink in his early 20s becomes very tiresome by the time he reaches his mid 30s.

And now he's nearly 40.

by Anonymousreply 3February 17, 2018 5:50 PM

Unbearable, vacuous human being. Gay community lionises people like this when it should be championing people with the substance.

by Anonymousreply 4February 17, 2018 5:52 PM

Meth-faced tinkerbell is so edgy and talented the Old Gray Lady is spreading the word.

by Anonymousreply 5February 17, 2018 6:20 PM

Not my style, but he certainly knows how to wear those boots.

by Anonymousreply 6February 17, 2018 6:22 PM

An appearance at the Brit Awards (keeping people in the loop).

I think he is cute and had lived an interesting life.

I did raise an eyebrow at Savage taking an "interest" in him when he was 16.

by Anonymousreply 8February 17, 2018 6:30 PM

who cares, but i like Del Marquis. he's so cute.

by Anonymousreply 9February 17, 2018 6:35 PM

"He used to date Anderson for several months."

This is clunky. How about, "He once dated Anderson for several months."

by Anonymousreply 10February 17, 2018 6:39 PM

The Sisters debut was great. And they were embraced over in the UK and experienced a level of fun fame and success over there that they quite frankly deserved over here. But figures considering who’s president now and at the time(Bush)

by Anonymousreply 11February 17, 2018 6:40 PM

R9, Yes, he's very cute and intrguiing.,

I am a fan of the group and him esp. once he beefed up so beautifully! I first became acquainted on their SNL debut with "I Don't Feel like Dancin"! A real nice rockabilly sound and yes they should have been much bigger in the US as their music was VERY American sounding, Probably the gay thing killed it.

by Anonymousreply 13February 17, 2018 6:56 PM

Loved the Scissor Sisters original album... there’s definitely something missing in the storyline about why they fell apart , but honestly the original vibe changed. My friends all worshiped them back then, but they veered off into more of a snarky, club rap jive. The same thing happened to Deeelite.

I think it would be hard for a colorful and original troupe like this nowadays, because either they’d have to take a political stance OR be lambasted for not taking one... meh. I miss 2002 where a good tune ruled over being PC.

by Anonymousreply 14February 17, 2018 7:00 PM

Scott Hoffman (Babydaddy) is more of a my cup of tea.

by Anonymousreply 15February 17, 2018 7:00 PM

I can't read another press release about this fool.

Do they address his seroconversion after years of go-go dancing and barebacking?

by Anonymousreply 16February 17, 2018 7:11 PM

[quote]This is clunky. How about, "He once dated Anderson for several months."

That is also rather wordy.

I would recommend, "He briefly dated Anderson Cooper."

by Anonymousreply 17February 17, 2018 7:16 PM

that a wide range in tastes.. From A Cooper to Chris Moukarble. That means I could had him. oh wait , I'm not rich

by Anonymousreply 18February 17, 2018 7:19 PM

[quote]I would recommend, "He briefly dated Anderson Cooper."

Still too wordy. I would go with: "He and Anderson Cooper fucked."

by Anonymousreply 19February 17, 2018 7:19 PM

It's clear Shears has been a major starfucker from an early age--he started with Dan Savage and Terry, and then just happened somehow to start fucking Anderson Cooper when he was a hot nobody in his early 20s and Anderson was eleven years older and a pasty-faced runt (remember in those days AC did not work out like he does now) but an actual celebrity. And then when he had a modicum of celebrity himself he started hitting up people like Elton John and Calvin Klein and Sandra Bernhardt.

Well, good luck to him. I'd want to starfuck those people too, though I hope he didn't ever have to put out for Sir Elton (btw, is it just me or does Shears have insane person eyes in this photo of the two of them? A sign of tweaking?)

You should see the cute guys Elton turned into whores in Atlanta.

by Anonymousreply 21February 17, 2018 7:43 PM

Elton's magnificent wig at r20 illustrates how you should never be fooled anymore by thinking someone is not bald because you can see his hairline--they can do so much these days with high-quality wigs.

Remember, this is what he looked like in 1972.

I read the profile, and he does, indeed, sound tiresome. I hate myself, though, for thinking he is hot af. SO..who's had him? Is he packing? A top? bottom? My guess is he's a hung bottom, which gives him the confidence and ability to star fuck as successfully has he has.

by Anonymousreply 23February 17, 2018 7:49 PM

His voice is a tiny contralto soprano.

And his lyrics are inaudible.

by Anonymousreply 24February 17, 2018 7:57 PM

He's actually hotter now than he was when he was more famous and the next big thing. Moving to middle age suits his looks, and he's got such beautiful muscular legs.

Is Anderson Cooper a top or a bottom? Since Jake was once with him. My guess is Jake is probably versatile.

by Anonymousreply 25February 17, 2018 8:00 PM

Are he and Sandra Bernhard still friends? She mentioned him being in the audience during the taping of her show I Love Being Me, Don’t You?

by Anonymousreply 26February 17, 2018 8:01 PM

I've known him for the past six years or so. (I wouldn't say we're friends, but we hang out occasionally.) He's actually really nice and fairly down to earth. Now, when I see him, it's usually in very small social settings, so I can't vouch for him when he's ON! but when he's just Jason he's a sweetheart. There are many other people out there worth DL's vitriol. This guy isn't one of them.

by Anonymousreply 27February 17, 2018 10:19 PM

No surprise, Jake Shears is a huge mess.

by Anonymousreply 28February 17, 2018 11:01 PM

Try fifteen, R5.

by Anonymousreply 29February 17, 2018 11:24 PM

omg he is so much fun.

awesome in that bway show.

wish he had a chat show: real good chatter...

his nudes are cute!

by Anonymousreply 30February 17, 2018 11:30 PM

Cloying man and cloying music!

Thank you, Hall Monitor. But I'll make up my own mind as to that.

Dear, a cunt as big as you will never run out of vitriol.

by Anonymousreply 33February 18, 2018 2:04 AM

Should I know who this is?

by Anonymousreply 34February 18, 2018 2:10 AM

he is sexy as fuk and if u ever get the chance to suk on his fukhole i encourage u to plunge forward full steam...

by Anonymousreply 35February 18, 2018 2:12 AM

Will I get herpeses or somethings if i suk on his fukhole? Or does the man have to go up into the man first and make graxy in his cak?

by Anonymousreply 36February 19, 2018 12:49 AM

I'm enjoying his boots

by Anonymousreply 37February 19, 2018 3:49 AM

He seemed very....scattered....and was barely able to form coherent sentences on Andy’s show recently. He was either Very nervous or pharmaceutically flying high.

I want to read his book.

by Anonymousreply 38February 19, 2018 4:33 AM

I'm sure they "mentored" him :)

by Anonymousreply 39February 19, 2018 5:29 AM

I always heard that Dan Savage told him to come out to his parents and didn't go well. I assumed it was through his advice column. But apparently he and Terry had a 16 year old high school student coming over to their house to play video games and went to his high school musicals. Feels a little weird to me. Makes me wonder if they took the "campfire rule" too far

by Anonymousreply 40February 19, 2018 5:38 AM

R8 from an interview he did with another magazine "The 39-year-old Shears, who is best known as the lead male singer for the pop band Scissor Sisters, told Attitude that he had a boyfriend nearly 20 years his senior when he was 16 years old." “He taught me how to play the guitar and introduced me to a lot of great music. But still, there was a lot of confusion, hurt feelings that surrounded the scenario that I could have done without,”

by Anonymousreply 41February 19, 2018 5:52 AM

I wonder what really happened with the Scissor Sisters. Like r14 suggested, there is something missing in the story. Maybe Jake didn't want to go into great detail or it's still a sore spot for them.

Shame because their first album and Night Work are both brilliant.

by Anonymousreply 42February 19, 2018 5:54 AM

R42 magic hour was bad though. I think the Scissor Sisters we're always going to be a flash in the pan. There wasn't enough there to have longevity. In fact they probably lasted one album too long

by Anonymousreply 43February 19, 2018 6:06 AM

39? And I'm Timothee Chalamet's secret fuck buddy!

by Anonymousreply 44February 19, 2018 6:10 AM

R44. He looks 39

by Anonymousreply 45February 19, 2018 6:19 AM

How many has he infected?

by Anonymousreply 46February 19, 2018 6:19 AM

Think his 33 year old BF (when he was 16) was a celebrity?

by Anonymousreply 47February 19, 2018 3:55 PM

R42 Baby Come Home and Inevitable are pretty decent songs.

by Anonymousreply 48February 19, 2018 4:14 PM

R48 agreed... but two OK songs on an album wont sustain a career

by Anonymousreply 49February 19, 2018 8:21 PM

I just started reading his memoir and I like him so far. He claims watching his (much) older siblings self-destruct on drugs kept him from doing hard drugs like meth. He says he started calling Dan Savage all the time when Savage had his radio show but hasn't talked about meeting him yet. And his 32-year-old boyfriend didn't seem so weird to me. When I was 16 I dated a 32-year-old. I like that his mom and dad were accepting because mine were too. I can relate to him. Of course, I'm only a third of the way through the book.

by Anonymousreply 50February 27, 2018 11:21 AM

R26, yes he is still friends with Sandra Bernhard. I went to her show at Joe's Pub two months ago and sat behind him.

by Anonymousreply 51February 27, 2018 11:33 AM

He's getting back to his roots.

I finished Jake's book "Boys Keep Swinging" and was really disappointed. I wanted to write a review on Amazon but I don't want to hurt Jake's feelings.

by Anonymousreply 53March 3, 2018 2:11 PM

R53 post a review here

by Anonymousreply 54March 3, 2018 2:19 PM

Herpeses, R36 ? What does the Shearses have in his man-pocketses?
