Vulgar Favors, the Cunanan book by Orth
anyone read it?
damn good, i picked it up and an hour later i sat it down.
riveting....
geez the chicago police were zero help cause they spent all their time defending the" non gay" status of Lee Miglin...etc ....marilyn of home shopping network and her long powerful tentacle arms .. everyone in town was scared to tell of their gay Lee storys, tho he was often spotted at the baths..
GOOD READING

I am mid way through it. It is a barn burner: you cant put it down. The Lee Miglin part is real good. Better than the show.

I have this book and the Gary Indiana book as well down in my basement library. Haven't dug them out to reread them yet, but I think I remember I liked the Indiana book better. There was a LOT of print coverage too; I remember feeling very sorry David Madsen.
But I lived in Chicago at the time, in Lakeview, and BOY did local media clamp down about Lee Miglin. Plus I once thought I saw Cunanan; I was on a bus and he was standing at a traffic light at the corner of N Bway and Roscoe. It was about 5:30 pm, and I almost yelled something out.
I am glad now I didn't.

miglin's rich family controlled even the cops investigating the case. they never admitted he was gay, official story was it was a random killing.
orths book lays it out good.
indiana book is good too. gary is a fab writer...
marilyn migly at 81 still drags her ass onto HSN to hawk face creme....a hooot

Wish someone would do a Lee Miglin bio....tho his family would probably sue their pants off.. he was the most interesting part to me:: rich closet gay man has hustlers visit...wife sells stuff on HSN, is very controlling, Orth says Lee alwys walked a few steps BEHIND HER !

No shit, a bio of even her would be a hoot.
YAY JUDITH LIGHT !

I'm reading now and like it, except the way Orth writes about gays has a lurid and judgmental tone.

So, you've been reading it for TWO hours, I take it?

I read it years ago when it was published. I did not know what was fact and what was fiction.

The book is stellar, and is particularly strong in the first half when it paints a riveting portrait of a true sociopath and pathological liar. Once he goes on the murder spree, it becomes a tad less interesting (strangely enough). Because I read the book just a couple months ago, it’s made watching ACS a weirdly frustrating experience because of the blatant liberties they are taking. For instance, that tedious scene in the pilot where Gianna and Andrew are backstage after the opera is pure fiction. Gianni didn’t find Andrew to be an intoxicating, swoon inducing enigma. He didn’t say more than 5 words to him. It just gives Andrew more credit than he even deserves.

I don't recall the term "spree killer" used to describe anyone else besides Cunanan. Is it because "spree" sounds GAY?

What would you have yelled out? "Hey, Andrew -- LOVE your work!"

You should try "Three Month Fever" (I think, its been forever) by Gary Indiana.
Cunanan as witty climber with photographic memory is fascinating...wallowing in his crime spree not so much. Don't throw away a second hour, its all downhill

There were tons of discussion of the book in the Versace threads if you followed it here on the DL. There were a few of us who have read Orths research.
I'm rather talked out, but if you are interested just go back and read through them.
