"Christopher and His Kind" (2011)

Have any of you seen this? It's on youtube for free. It's the original story of "Cabaret" (more or less), with much more explicit homosexuality. Matt Smith (The Crown, Dr. Who) is Christopher Isherwood; Imogen Poots is Jean Ross, the original for Sally Bowles; DL favorite Will Kemp (of the Gap commerical) is Sally's American lover; the gorgeous Alexander Dreymon is Christopher's gay-for-pay boyfriend; Doulas Both is Christopher's more permanent boyfriend Heinz; other DL favorite Tom Wlaschina (Jaqen H'rgar of Game of Thrones) is Heinz's brother; and Lindsay Duncan (Rome) is Christopher's mother.

Only disappointment: because Smith was about to appear as Dr. Who, the BBC wanted to sanitize him and refused to allow him to have any bare-assed scenes (not to mention no frontal nudity for him). But there's lots of eroticism in it otherwise.

I have. It’s a good film, OP.

It's really good, just what an adaptation of the novel/memory should be

Memory = memoir

Haven't seen this but I'll have to check it out--I'm currently on the second volume of Christopher Isherwood's diaries and really enjoying them....

The lead actor is quite ugly. Some of the supporting actors are pretty and they've done nude scenes in other shows.

This effort is rather ordinary and bland compared to 'Cabaret'. It may appear more authentic but Isherwood was habitual exaggerator of the truth.

Love the film, have watched it several times. But have to say I find Matt Smith to be supremely ugly and his mannerisms a total turn-off. Other than that, I love it. Make sense?
