"Old Money Blacks"? Like Hattie McDaniel? Cab Calloway?

Look at how fast this bigot, r1, got on here.

I think it's historically simply wealthy and upper middle class blacks; not necessarily old money. And, as with some other LA neighborhoods, it may not be as black now as it was just a decade or two ago.

You just discovered this? Baldwin Hills have been the black Beverly Hills for decades. Not really that great, more like an upper middle class neighborhood with a lot of schlocky business at the bottom of the hill. No one in LA ever says "hey lets go hang out and shop in Baldwin Hills"

Baldwin Hills is no Ladera Heights or View Park, which is where uppity LA blacks live, c.f., Sparkles.

Isn't View Park part of Baldwin Hills?

I believe Roxie "Helen Willis" Roker lived there, or adjacent to it. One of the old address databases on Ancestry lists her at 4061 S Cloverdale Ave, Los Angeles, CA, 90008.

I live in LA and Baldwin Hills and Ladera Heights are areas not to stumble into.

Is this near the enclave of Watts or Compton?

Baldwin Hills is upper middle class. Parts of it have amazing views of the Hollywood sign and downtown Los Angeles. Go down to the nearest major streets and it's Target, fast food restaurants and lots of commuter traffic passing through to get elsewhere.

View Park-Windsor Hills, Baldwin Hills, and Ladera Heights are all adjacent or near-adjacent communities on the Westside, comprised mostly upper-middle to upper class African Americans. R10, Watts and Compton are further east, on the other side of the 110.

It's a nice neighborhood.

Ike and Tina Turner lived in View Park.

I always just regarded them as neighborhoods I pass by on the way down to LAX.
by Anonymous | reply 16 | February 14, 2018 6:30 AM |
R16, exactly and no where I'd want to be.
by Anonymous | reply 17 | February 14, 2018 6:44 AM |
And no where that you could actually afford to be R17.

another Baldwin makes black history news
Idlewild is a vacation and retirement community in Yates Township, located just east of Baldwin in southeast Lake County, a rural part of northwestern lower Michigan. During the first half of the 20th century, it was one of the few resorts in the country where African-Americans were allowed to vacation and purchase property, before such discrimination became illegal in 1964. It surrounds Lake Idlewild, and the headwaters of the Pere Marquette River run through the area. Much of the surrounding area is within Manistee National Forest.
