What an utterly dreary film.....you can sit on the curb in the hood and watch the same thing for free.
The Florida Project should be called The Feral Children Project

I do not get the love for this film.

Me either. And I liked Tangerine. Bad acting, unlikeable people, two hours of trashy people and out of control ghetto children. I found it tragic. I feel like I just watched 4 episodes of “Cops” back to back.

I gave the film away after 15 min. Nothing cute or precocious about feral kids and irresponsible parents . The film is a sad meditation on social disintegration. Depressing and tragic.

Amen I don’t get the hype. Poverty porn?

It reminds me of people I've known.

I hated it. I don’t get the accolades.

When I was a kid, abandoned children were fodder for musicals and TV sitcoms.

Do people actually live like this?
by Anonymous | reply 9 | February 12, 2018 2:48 AM |
It’s a terrible yet accurate reflection of extreme poverty in our society.

I laughed. That one mom was such a skank. It's too bad about the kids though.

I loved it. Seeing it on a big screen made it more immersive. I think it’s a great film, actually. Not pleasant, but beautiful in its way, and truthful.
The one thing I don’t see mentioned in online discussions about it is its debt to a documentary that Nancy Peolsi’s daughter made. She filmed the lives of homeless children living in cheap hotels around Disneyland, and The Florida Project is a dramatized version of that.
Much of Disney labor is unskilled and low paying. They charge more for the parks every year, some should trickle down.

Why do all the children in the film have such goofy names? Moonee, Scooty, Jancey? WTF?
by Anonymous | reply 17 | February 14, 2018 9:06 PM |
Because they’re feral
by Anonymous | reply 18 | February 14, 2018 9:20 PM |
They sound like the names of Cletus' children.

ditto to R2
I just got this on DVD from the library and was surprised at how much it is not a "magical ode/love letter to childhood." It had beautiful moments between the child characters, not least of which was the heart-rending end scene, but the overall effect is so horrible. The moments where the kids are simply being independent and exploring the natural world around them were wonderful, but if you edit out the brutal, disrespectful, destructive nastiness, that's a short film.

Then they aren't homeless.

It's longer than it needs to be, and some of the acting is bad. But I liked it. Slice of life of characters not usually portrayed in glossy HW movies.

R8 It really would make a great musical.

I liked it but it was depressing as hell.
