The Durrells of Corfu
This British show is based on a book. However, it seems to be for the frauiest fraus who ever fraued.
The mother has the chance to get banged by a hot Swede and keeps messing up.
The oldest son sits around in his underwear all day and "writes".
The middle son looks like an escapee from Cabaret's Tomorrow Belongs to Me.
The daughter is a dyke.
The youngest son has an unhealthy attachment to animals and will probably grow up to be a serial killer.
But I watch it for Leslie Caron.

I just watched the very first episode during a plane ride and liked it.
The oldest son is Lawrence Durrell, who wrote a number of books. There's a line of dialogue in "The Post" that Meryl said about "a new Lawrence Durrell book."

OP you really are a dope. Or a fairly good troll. The brother you call a "writer" became one of the greatest English novelists of the 20th century. The middle son went nowhere. The daughter struggled through her life, but she was not a dyke. The youngest son became one of the world's leading authorities on wildlife and wrote dozens of well-received books, created many zoos, spent his live devoted to animals, and is considered one of the forerunners of the attempt to make zoos more humane.

If you watch Season 1 of the tv series, no she didn't. She was taken in by a Swedish 'mo, and she only found out he was a 'mo when she went snooping through his dresser and found compromising photos of him with another man. If she hadn't snooped, she'd be married to a 'mo.

Example of bad writing:
The conversation between the oldest and second oldest brother. The older brother is talking to the younger brother about famous authors. But he is SHOCKED to discover that his brother isn't interested in the topic.
If you have been brothers with someone for almost 20 years, you would already know that.
It was just exposition for the viewer to show the older brother was well read.

There's another TV show I'm watching called "The Crown." It's about this really privileged bunch of people in England.
The dad was a fiend for smoking, and died on lung cancer.
The mom is a big prude, and gets offended really easily.
The big sister is really repressed, and will probably grow up to be a serial killer.
The younger sister is a nympho.
The big sister's husband is a whining male slut, and shows his butt sometimes.
The big sister's eldest son is a nellie little pussy and will probably also grow up to be a serial killer.
But Iwatch it for John Lithgow.
I like to tell you about the TV shows I'm watching. They are so interesting.

I finished Season 2 and it's exactly like Season 1. It seems that every man on Corfu is in love with this mother and she keeps turning them all down. It's frau porn. She should just have sex with some of the hot Greek men and make the show interesting.

I disagree with you r26....the 2nd season is much better than the first season. The youngest son appearance and cleanliness devolves into the feral child he is. The children blossom in full fledged eccentrics. The second son, Leslie, is particularly fine the second season. The camerawork and photography are much more interesting. Sure, the local people are charming elves and Spiro is too good to be true, but we watch The Durrells to escape deep thoughts for 45 minutes.

Spyros is married with children. And the show is frau porn, so in order for Spyros and Mrs. Durrell to get together, there's going to have to be a huge disease like scarlet fever that kills his wife and children. Then he will be free to court Mrs. Durrell. And conveniently, the scarlet fever will leave Spyros sterile, so he will have to adopt the Durrell children as his own.
I hope Season 3 doesn't bring another lover for Mrs. Durrell. That storyline is worn out.

Is this based on Gerald Durrell's "My Family And Other Animals"? If so, they must have made a lot of changes for TV- I don't remember any romance for the mother in the book. It was all narrated from the youngest son's point of view so there were lots of poetic descriptions of wildlife along with some mild toilet humor and plenty of slapstick comedy that showed how every single character was eccentric in some way.

[quote]Is this based on Gerald Durrell's "My Family And Other Animals"?
The opening credits say that its based on Gerry's trilogy "The Durrells In Corfu." But they have made several changes. First, the oldest brother was already married when they moved to Corfu. Second, the children were raised in India because their father had a job there. The tv show sort of makes it out as if they were some staid British family trying to survive in a new culture. But the children were already used to a non-British life and probably the impetus for them moving to Corfu after the father died was that they just didn't like the British environment. So they were much more adaptable than the tv show allows for.

I am traveling again and looking for something that might have a similar mix of drama, comedy, quirky characters, etc. I'm not opposed to some sadness or serious life challenges but I am SO not into the dystopian themes that seem to pervade so much of TV.....nor am I much for the procedurals and forensic shows.

Its amazing that t he house exterior and all the outside scenes are filmed on Corfu but the interiors are a set in England. Think of all the scenes where they are running in and out of the house. They match perfectly. Still i was disappointed, I want to live in a house like that in a setting like that. It would be heaven. Which is why in the final season coming up, we should not be denied the chance to see Spiros' meaty ass and thighs.

Stopped watching when it became repetitive. Larry is channeling Alan Alda. Gerry is morphing into Gollum. Its the Waltons on a Greek Isle. Snoozefest.

Louisa had two suitors this week, one a man and one a woman!

Do you think that really is Josh's cock in the pic above. It has to be prosthetic.

It's real. You can see it flopping around in GOC.

Spiros would show his cock, too, but he'd need to bring along the wheelbarrow he uses to support it on set.

Well, that was a lot to happen in one episode.

GeeGee was kinda handsome, for sure.

I do loathe that old sea captain, though. He wasn't any more interesting the first two times, either.

Ooh, Leslie looked all kinds of good with his shirt off!

The main (?) story this week was weak, the Italian family. Badly written, not well directed, who knows. The firefighters, okay. The youngest boy with a girlfriend, very cute. Margo kissing the saint's foot was funny. Good scenes with Spiro and Theo as well.
For the first time I really paid attention to the transition between the interior and exterior scenes. There was a very flashy one in which Mrs D is leaning out a window, POV outside, that pans to her stepping away from it, POV inside the house.

Yeah, it was weird for sure R153. The guy playing the Ferrari son was hot, though. But it very much seemed like one of those treading water episodes.

That was a clever shot - the camera outside observing Mama D at the open window in the real Corfu house, then as she withdraws into the house, the camera tracks inside as well, and we're seamlessly on the set back in the UK.

Louisa wants Spiros in her quite deeply.

I found this episode kind of depressing and I'm so depressed already about the elections, I needed more cheering up tonight.

Me too R160. This whole season has been pretty subdued for me. Thank goodness for Margo and the scenery.

Why is Henry Miller naked and not Larry?
There was a missed chance for Larry to be gang banged by the entire police force (and especially Leslie) when he chained himself to that filing cabinet. Very disappointing.

Because Josh O'Connor's dick is so enormous, they'd have to blur out a LOT of the screen.
And give that huge thing a screen credit!

R175, you don’t know DL. The “Duwwell!” posts are the most DL on this thread and you don’t even realize how they tie to this show or the Durrell family. Sad!

Especially because we all know he's gay. There's no way he put his thingy in her thingy. The furtive looks he gives Spiros are telling.

Ok, I started watching the show a month ago. Today I watched the season 4 opener, so digging out this thread and rant away: The show just looks gorgeous. Just for the scenery it's worth to watch. I don't mind that the stories are fluff. The world is sad enough in June 2020. So, I actually appreciate fluff right now. Callum Woodhouse is the standout surprise imo. In season 1, he and his character was basically just playing grumpy, nothing else. In season 2 going forward, they gave Leslie more to do and Woodhouse accepted the challenge. The character of Margo seems a missed opportunity. Really nice acting, and the character seems quite smart, but except a job-of-the-week, the character doesn't do much. I just want to grab her by her shoulders, and yell at her 'do something, anything really.' The actress is to good for the role. The older brother's portrayal is overrated here, imho. For three seasons Josh O'Connor was basically just smirking as a reaction to everything. That man better have a big dick. Keeley Hawes: Love her, even in this. But comedy may not be her thing. There are rare scenes where she gets to shine and show her craft. But mostly she just puts on an embarrassed face.
The one thing that really, really rubs me the wrong way: The show is so damn contemporary about their character's interactions. So, Larry has a live-in girlfriend? In 1935? Leslie has three girlfriends, and the only concern the mother has is that he is hurting a girl's heart? I don't buy it. And I don't buy that Larry can speak about his sex life so openly with his mother. The way they all handle homosexuality is admirable, but not credible for the mid-1930s. The show doesn't act 1930-ish. It's too progressive even for 1990.
Rant out. Still like to watch it.

I loved this show, R184. But you have a relatively accurate assessment of it.
Callum Woodhouse was definitely the standout. He broke my heart in later seasons. Margo as a character FINALLY gets a chance to grow in season 4.

Uh, it's nonsensical BS that has to do with one of the actors that attracts stans to this board, and N O T H I N G to do with this show.

Which is kind of the point of the whole thing. The Durrell's WERE unconventional for their time.
