The Durrells of Corfu

This British show is based on a book. However, it seems to be for the frauiest fraus who ever fraued.

The mother has the chance to get banged by a hot Swede and keeps messing up.

The oldest son sits around in his underwear all day and "writes".

The middle son looks like an escapee from Cabaret's Tomorrow Belongs to Me.

The daughter is a dyke.

The youngest son has an unhealthy attachment to animals and will probably grow up to be a serial killer.

But I watch it for Leslie Caron.

by Anonymousreply 1February 13, 2018 7:38 AM

The hot Swede is gay.

by Anonymousreply 2February 13, 2018 10:35 AM

ive tried its very pretty but the mother is horrid, fussy and dumb

Josh O'Connor?

by Anonymousreply 4February 13, 2018 11:19 AM

"Based on a book"?

Seriously, OP, are you really that stupid???

by Anonymousreply 5February 13, 2018 11:48 AM

[quote] Seriously, OP, are you really that stupid???

What do you mean? The show is based on a trilogy written by the youngest son.

by Anonymousreply 6February 13, 2018 11:59 AM

Loved both seasons and very happy it’s coming back for a third. The entire cast work so well together especially the actors playing the Durrell family.

by Anonymousreply 7February 13, 2018 12:02 PM

But we watch for Leslie Caron!

by Anonymousreply 8February 13, 2018 12:04 PM

I just watched the very first episode during a plane ride and liked it.

The oldest son is Lawrence Durrell, who wrote a number of books. There's a line of dialogue in "The Post" that Meryl said about "a new Lawrence Durrell book."

Also? He may, or may not, have banged his own daughter.

How very Woody of him!

Josh O'Connor rocks! I can't wait for the new series.

by Anonymousreply 12February 13, 2018 1:16 PM

Indeed, R11. I thought that was understood but thank you for clarifying.

by Anonymousreply 13February 13, 2018 1:43 PM

OP you really are a dope. Or a fairly good troll. The brother you call a "writer" became one of the greatest English novelists of the 20th century. The middle son went nowhere. The daughter struggled through her life, but she was not a dyke. The youngest son became one of the world's leading authorities on wildlife and wrote dozens of well-received books, created many zoos, spent his live devoted to animals, and is considered one of the forerunners of the attempt to make zoos more humane.

[quote] and Mother got all the good cock in Corfu

If you watch Season 1 of the tv series, no she didn't. She was taken in by a Swedish 'mo, and she only found out he was a 'mo when she went snooping through his dresser and found compromising photos of him with another man. If she hadn't snooped, she'd be married to a 'mo.

by Anonymousreply 16February 13, 2018 11:28 PM

Duwwell!

by Anonymousreply 17February 13, 2018 11:33 PM

I'm right at the end of Season 1 episode one. Waiting to see if the brother's two friends DP the sister.

by Anonymousreply 18February 14, 2018 1:05 PM

Too twee by half.

by Anonymousreply 19February 14, 2018 1:27 PM

Example of bad writing:

The conversation between the oldest and second oldest brother. The older brother is talking to the younger brother about famous authors. But he is SHOCKED to discover that his brother isn't interested in the topic.

If you have been brothers with someone for almost 20 years, you would already know that.

It was just exposition for the viewer to show the older brother was well read.

by Anonymousreply 20February 14, 2018 1:31 PM

Did you hate the CSI shows as much as I did, R20?

by Anonymousreply 21February 14, 2018 2:24 PM

It's charming thus far.

by Anonymousreply 22February 26, 2018 12:55 AM

Spoiler alert: the mother catches the Swede doing the man sex.

by Anonymousreply 23February 26, 2018 1:01 AM

Why would you spoil that, r23?

by Anonymousreply 24February 26, 2018 1:02 AM

There's another TV show I'm watching called "The Crown." It's about this really privileged bunch of people in England.

The dad was a fiend for smoking, and died on lung cancer.

The mom is a big prude, and gets offended really easily.

The big sister is really repressed, and will probably grow up to be a serial killer.

The younger sister is a nympho.

The big sister's husband is a whining male slut, and shows his butt sometimes.

The big sister's eldest son is a nellie little pussy and will probably also grow up to be a serial killer.

But Iwatch it for John Lithgow.

I like to tell you about the TV shows I'm watching. They are so interesting.

by Anonymousreply 25February 26, 2018 1:09 AM

I finished Season 2 and it's exactly like Season 1. It seems that every man on Corfu is in love with this mother and she keeps turning them all down. It's frau porn. She should just have sex with some of the hot Greek men and make the show interesting.

by Anonymousreply 26February 26, 2018 1:12 AM

I think the second son is gay in real life. He appeared shirtless in a gay movie.

by Anonymousreply 28February 26, 2018 2:07 AM

by Anonymousreply 29February 26, 2018 2:10 AM

Spiros looks good with his shirt off!

by Anonymousreply 30February 26, 2018 2:12 AM

I disagree with you r26....the 2nd season is much better than the first season. The youngest son appearance and cleanliness devolves into the feral child he is. The children blossom in full fledged eccentrics. The second son, Leslie, is particularly fine the second season. The camerawork and photography are much more interesting. Sure, the local people are charming elves and Spiro is too good to be true, but we watch The Durrells to escape deep thoughts for 45 minutes.

by Anonymousreply 31February 26, 2018 2:26 AM

I want Spiro, Theo and Sven to take turns blasting a load on my face.

by Anonymousreply 32February 26, 2018 2:32 AM

[quote] It seems that every man on Corfu is in love with this mother and she keeps turning them all down.

Just two, right? The guy from Muriel’s Wedding and Spiro?

And Spiro was not romantically interested in her in S1. They must have thought a love triangle would be suspenseful.

by Anonymousreply 33February 26, 2018 2:37 AM

[quote] Just two, right? The guy from Muriel’s Wedding and Spiro?

Spiro has a wife and children. He must love from afar.

by Anonymousreply 34February 26, 2018 2:38 AM

The guy playing Sven is not the same actor who played the swimmer in Muriel's Wedding.

by Anonymousreply 35February 26, 2018 2:43 AM

r33 is talking about the guy in Season 2.

by Anonymousreply 36February 26, 2018 2:48 AM

The businessman who has the jealous ex-gf is the guy From Muriel’s Wedding.

by Anonymousreply 37February 26, 2018 2:49 AM

Fascinating. Gerry Durrell’s books were some of my favourites growing up. I always wanted to have his childhood. I didn’t know the made a show based on the books.

by Anonymousreply 38February 26, 2018 5:08 AM

Liked season 1 a lot. Season 2, I didn't care for the first episode with the evil landlady but may have to try again. I've fantasized about just packing everything up and moving somewhere far away before so this is a bit like living that daydream vicariously.

by Anonymousreply 39February 26, 2018 5:36 AM

Do they move into a new house in S2 then?

(Please don't spoil anything, I'm about to watch S1 finale tonight)

by Anonymousreply 40February 26, 2018 6:40 PM

We can’t answer the question, because you didn’t want any spoilers R40

by Anonymousreply 43February 27, 2018 8:55 PM

I want Larry (Josh O’Connor) deeply inside of me.

Season 3 trailer

Offsite Link
by Anonymousreply 59March 1, 2018 4:48 AM

Theo is not a child predator! He's a bit of a nerd and both he and Gerry nerd out over animals.

He IS handsome, and I wondered if they'd pair him with the mother.

So far, Spyros is the winner in the chemistry department.

I bet Leslie would love a big swarthy dick in him....

by Anonymousreply 60March 1, 2018 1:25 PM

Spyros is married with children. And the show is frau porn, so in order for Spyros and Mrs. Durrell to get together, there's going to have to be a huge disease like scarlet fever that kills his wife and children. Then he will be free to court Mrs. Durrell. And conveniently, the scarlet fever will leave Spyros sterile, so he will have to adopt the Durrell children as his own.

I hope Season 3 doesn't bring another lover for Mrs. Durrell. That storyline is worn out.

by Anonymousreply 61March 1, 2018 1:33 PM

The trailer seems to suggest just that happening, R61.

by Anonymousreply 62March 1, 2018 4:43 PM

I know Josh is supposed to be the "actory" one but little Leslie moments have made me realize Callum Woodhouse is really good.

He had a moment where he cried and it did not seem scripted.....in that same scene he really showed love for his brother and mother, despite being such a grumpus generally.

by Anonymousreply 68March 4, 2018 9:50 PM

That scene really got to me too R68

by Anonymousreply 69March 4, 2018 9:58 PM

by Anonymousreply 71March 5, 2018 1:18 AM

by Anonymousreply 75March 5, 2018 10:00 PM

Oh, that would explain her connection to the show. She was very funny in the cricket episode I just saw.

by Anonymousreply 76March 5, 2018 10:10 PM

I didn't know Peter Hall was married to Leslie Caron. Was she mentioned in the diaries? I guess the diaries came after their divorce.

The one thing that bothers me about this show, especially in Season 1, is that they keep complaining they don't have food, yet Gerry has 90 million animals that need to be fed.

by Anonymousreply 83March 6, 2018 11:35 AM

Funny to see Downton's Spratt show up in season one as Leslie Caron's butler.

Still a shopbottom, that one.

by Anonymousreply 84March 6, 2018 3:08 PM

Love this cast!

I tried to watch the PBS movie from about 10 years back (Imelda Staunton as Louise, Russell Tovey as Leslie and Matthew Goode as Larry) but I couldn’t get through 20 minutes of it.

by Anonymousreply 85March 6, 2018 7:11 PM

Fun fact I just learned.....

The guy who plays Donald is the producer Christoper Hall's son - and ergo, he is Leslie Caron's grandson.

The Durrells IN Corfu

by Anonymousreply 89March 21, 2018 3:37 AM

Is this based on Gerald Durrell's "My Family And Other Animals"? If so, they must have made a lot of changes for TV- I don't remember any romance for the mother in the book. It was all narrated from the youngest son's point of view so there were lots of poetic descriptions of wildlife along with some mild toilet humor and plenty of slapstick comedy that showed how every single character was eccentric in some way.

by Anonymousreply 90March 21, 2018 3:57 AM

R90, did they feature the Durrell Challenge?

by Anonymousreply 91March 21, 2018 4:47 AM

[quote]Is this based on Gerald Durrell's "My Family And Other Animals"?

The opening credits say that its based on Gerry's trilogy "The Durrells In Corfu." But they have made several changes. First, the oldest brother was already married when they moved to Corfu. Second, the children were raised in India because their father had a job there. The tv show sort of makes it out as if they were some staid British family trying to survive in a new culture. But the children were already used to a non-British life and probably the impetus for them moving to Corfu after the father died was that they just didn't like the British environment. So they were much more adaptable than the tv show allows for.

by Anonymousreply 92March 21, 2018 11:25 AM

Gerald Durrell's "My Family And Other Animals" was previously adapted to a two hour movie for PBS about 10 years ago. Matthew Goode and Russell Tovey were the two older brothers.

by Anonymousreply 93March 21, 2018 3:37 PM

Yes, and Imelda was the mom.

I do love Keeley Hawes, though.

And apparently Aunt Hermoine is a regular this season. Old girl is getting the cobwebs cleaned outta that box on a regular basis now.

by Anonymousreply 94March 21, 2018 10:27 PM

First episode of Season 3 was a bit stupid. I hope the writing gets better.

by Anonymousreply 95March 24, 2018 3:18 PM

So fellow Durrells watchers....I discovered this show after downloading it on iTunes for a flight.

I am traveling again and looking for something that might have a similar mix of drama, comedy, quirky characters, etc. I'm not opposed to some sadness or serious life challenges but I am SO not into the dystopian themes that seem to pervade so much of TV.....nor am I much for the procedurals and forensic shows.

Might you fine people have a suggestion for me to watch/download?

by Anonymousreply 96March 25, 2018 10:44 PM

[quote]a similar mix of drama, comedy, quirky characters, etc.

Gavin & Stacey - by Ruth Jones and James Corden - Comedy

Stella - by Ruth Jones - Comedy

Cranford and Return to Cranford (has more British dames packed in than any other show) - drama

Larkrise to Candleford (sort of like a British Little House on the Prairie)

Goodnight Sweetheart - comedy

Miranda - comedy

Cold Feet - drama

Benidorm - comedy

The Cafe - drama

And some of the light murder mysteries (ie no procedurals, no forensics)

Father Brown

Shakespeare & Hathaway

Agatha Raisin

Rosemary & Thyme

Its amazing that t he house exterior and all the outside scenes are filmed on Corfu but the interiors are a set in England. Think of all the scenes where they are running in and out of the house. They match perfectly. Still i was disappointed, I want to live in a house like that in a setting like that. It would be heaven. I love how they sit around in the evening and read and talk, not even a radio. It will be sad when they have to move back to England due to the war.

No I'm pretty sure the outdoor scenes are filmed in Corfu. There's a re-created village that they use for the village scenes. It was a former tourist attraction like Williamsburg. They used it for the market scenes at any rate.

Interesting r134

by Anonymousreply 135October 11, 2018 1:26 AM

I didn't realize there are eight episodes this season, instead of six.

This week was interesting...very different from usual.

LOL literally at "Love your ass!"

by Anonymousreply 138October 15, 2018 12:58 AM

Also....hello Henry Miller walking around naked

[quote] Henry Miller walking around naked

Which is why in the final season coming up, we should not be denied the chance to see Spiros' meaty ass and thighs.

by Anonymousreply 140October 15, 2018 1:01 AM

Stopped watching when it became repetitive. Larry is channeling Alan Alda. Gerry is morphing into Gollum. Its the Waltons on a Greek Isle. Snoozefest.

by Anonymousreply 141October 15, 2018 1:19 AM

Is Cavill a huge fan?

by Anonymousreply 142October 15, 2018 2:03 AM

Louisa had two suitors this week, one a man and one a woman!

by Anonymousreply 143October 15, 2018 2:15 AM

Do you think that really is Josh's cock in the pic above. It has to be prosthetic.

by Anonymousreply 144October 15, 2018 7:50 PM

It's real. You can see it flopping around in GOC.

by Anonymousreply 145October 15, 2018 9:05 PM

Spiros would show his cock, too, but he'd need to bring along the wheelbarrow he uses to support it on set.

by Anonymousreply 146October 15, 2018 9:44 PM

Well, that was a lot to happen in one episode.

by Anonymousreply 147October 22, 2018 2:21 AM

Duwwell?

by Anonymousreply 148October 22, 2018 2:25 AM

GeeGee. Looks good in a turban.

by Anonymousreply 149October 22, 2018 5:18 AM

GeeGee was kinda handsome, for sure.

I do loathe that old sea captain, though. He wasn't any more interesting the first two times, either.

by Anonymousreply 151October 22, 2018 9:02 PM

Ooh, Leslie looked all kinds of good with his shirt off!

by Anonymousreply 152October 29, 2018 3:33 AM

The main (?) story this week was weak, the Italian family. Badly written, not well directed, who knows. The firefighters, okay. The youngest boy with a girlfriend, very cute. Margo kissing the saint's foot was funny. Good scenes with Spiro and Theo as well.

For the first time I really paid attention to the transition between the interior and exterior scenes. There was a very flashy one in which Mrs D is leaning out a window, POV outside, that pans to her stepping away from it, POV inside the house.

by Anonymousreply 153October 29, 2018 2:26 PM

Yeah, it was weird for sure R153. The guy playing the Ferrari son was hot, though. But it very much seemed like one of those treading water episodes.

by Anonymousreply 154October 29, 2018 3:57 PM

That was a clever shot - the camera outside observing Mama D at the open window in the real Corfu house, then as she withdraws into the house, the camera tracks inside as well, and we're seamlessly on the set back in the UK.

by Anonymousreply 155October 29, 2018 4:46 PM

Louisa wants Spiros in her quite deeply.

by Anonymousreply 156October 29, 2018 5:07 PM

new episode tonight!

by Anonymousreply 157November 4, 2018 10:52 PM

Duwwell!

by Anonymousreply 158November 5, 2018 12:45 AM

THAT was fun. Mostly.

by Anonymousreply 159November 5, 2018 3:07 AM

I found this episode kind of depressing and I'm so depressed already about the elections, I needed more cheering up tonight.

by Anonymousreply 160November 5, 2018 3:21 AM

Me too R160. This whole season has been pretty subdued for me. Thank goodness for Margo and the scenery.

by Anonymousreply 161November 6, 2018 1:04 AM

At least there’s fantasizing about Josh’s dong....

by Anonymousreply 162November 6, 2018 1:07 AM

by Anonymousreply 166November 12, 2018 12:13 AM

Leslie Caron is back!

by Anonymousreply 167November 12, 2018 12:28 AM

Well, the actor playing Henry is not altogether bad to look at.

I do love me some Sven.

by Anonymousreply 168November 12, 2018 1:17 AM

Spiro is going to poke Louisa in the cooter!

by Anonymousreply 169November 12, 2018 1:28 AM

Why is Henry Miller naked and not Larry?

There was a missed chance for Larry to be gang banged by the entire police force (and especially Leslie) when he chained himself to that filing cabinet. Very disappointing.

by Anonymousreply 170November 12, 2018 4:38 AM

Because Josh O'Connor's dick is so enormous, they'd have to blur out a LOT of the screen.

And give that huge thing a screen credit!

"Call me Louisa one last time"

R175, you don’t know DL. The “Duwwell!” posts are the most DL on this thread and you don’t even realize how they tie to this show or the Durrell family. Sad!

by Anonymousreply 177November 19, 2018 1:28 AM

R175, then you are truly lost.

by Anonymousreply 178November 19, 2018 1:33 AM

Guess so. The last several posts are from halfwits who think pronouncing words makes a clever comment.

I knew Daphne was either going to lose that baby or it would come out that she tricked him.

That cunt!

by Anonymousreply 181November 19, 2018 7:27 PM

[quote] I knew Daphne was either going to lose that baby or it would come out that she tricked him.

Especially because we all know he's gay. There's no way he put his thingy in her thingy. The furtive looks he gives Spiros are telling.

by Anonymousreply 182November 20, 2018 2:02 AM

Spiros topping Leslie....

*falls off chair*

by Anonymousreply 183November 20, 2018 10:57 AM

Ok, I started watching the show a month ago. Today I watched the season 4 opener, so digging out this thread and rant away: The show just looks gorgeous. Just for the scenery it's worth to watch. I don't mind that the stories are fluff. The world is sad enough in June 2020. So, I actually appreciate fluff right now. Callum Woodhouse is the standout surprise imo. In season 1, he and his character was basically just playing grumpy, nothing else. In season 2 going forward, they gave Leslie more to do and Woodhouse accepted the challenge. The character of Margo seems a missed opportunity. Really nice acting, and the character seems quite smart, but except a job-of-the-week, the character doesn't do much. I just want to grab her by her shoulders, and yell at her 'do something, anything really.' The actress is to good for the role. The older brother's portrayal is overrated here, imho. For three seasons Josh O'Connor was basically just smirking as a reaction to everything. That man better have a big dick. Keeley Hawes: Love her, even in this. But comedy may not be her thing. There are rare scenes where she gets to shine and show her craft. But mostly she just puts on an embarrassed face.

The one thing that really, really rubs me the wrong way: The show is so damn contemporary about their character's interactions. So, Larry has a live-in girlfriend? In 1935? Leslie has three girlfriends, and the only concern the mother has is that he is hurting a girl's heart? I don't buy it. And I don't buy that Larry can speak about his sex life so openly with his mother. The way they all handle homosexuality is admirable, but not credible for the mid-1930s. The show doesn't act 1930-ish. It's too progressive even for 1990.

Rant out. Still like to watch it.

by Anonymousreply 184June 13, 2020 11:19 PM

I loved this show, R184. But you have a relatively accurate assessment of it.

Callum Woodhouse was definitely the standout. He broke my heart in later seasons. Margo as a character FINALLY gets a chance to grow in season 4.

Uh, it's nonsensical BS that has to do with one of the actors that attracts stans to this board, and N O T H I N G to do with this show.

Which is kind of the point of the whole thing. The Durrell's WERE unconventional for their time.
