Natalie Wood's time on the set during West Side Story was not her finest hour. Marni Nixon was more diplomatic in interviews, sometimes done alongside Rita Moreno, but the two of them were more or less on the same page: Natalie Wood was out of her element in a musical, miscast as Puerto Rican, and upset that her singing voice would not be used though it was painfully obvious she was incapable.

I spent some time with her several years ago, when I was in charge of the VIP set up etc. for a special 35 MM screening of West Side Story and she gave a talk and I had to handle her set up, meet & greet, etc. She is a kind, friendly, sharp, witty, very pretty woman. Petite, full of energy and very down to earth. I was nervous and was hoping she wouldn't be a diva, and she really put me at ease and was very easy to please. You won't get a bad word out of me.

Life has been very good to Rita. She ended up married to a doctor I think. He may have died recently but they had a long happy marriage.

Rita Moreno was pissed she was nominated in the Tony in the supporting category for "The Ritz" and mentions it in her acceptance speech. She was right, she was the lead but the Tonys have screwed up many times. Dick Van Dyke won Supporting for "Bye Bye Birdie" and Tammy Grimes won Supporting for "The Unsinkable Molly Brown" when they were both clearly leads and Tammy was even the title character.

The only person who ever disliked Natalie. And Natalie was not a terror on the set. She knew they choose her for being a star and she took extra dance and speech lessons to get the accent. The rest of the cast and dancers who were unhappy she got the role saw how hard she was working and they all grew to like her. Except Rita, who was jealous. That was the way it was back then. Both Mary Martin and even Julie Andrew's missed out on their Broadway roles. And, seriously, she was the only person who disliked Natalie.

Sorry, but Natalie Wood was NOT at her best during the making of West Side Story. She was terrible to Richard Beymer, because she thought he was miscast, and she'd wanted Warren Beatty. She made it such a traumatic experience for Beymer that he refuses to speak of the movie, or partake in reunions.

I don't know. She is portrayed as a horny energetic flashy Jerome Robbins dancer costumed by Irene Sharraff which is not a bad thing to be when you want to be in show business.

The late Linda Dangcil was a friend and she was one of the Shark girls. According to her, there was no unhappiness about any of the casting. The dancers were happy to be in the movie and Robbins segregated them according to gang. Both Beymer and Wood were separated from everyone else, which probably contributed to the belief that the experience was unhappy. Moreno was very happily in the gypsy group and in fact, created Googie Gomez for them. She said that for their next job, they'll do a bus and truck tour of Gypsy and voila.

She is fantastic. When I was a kid, I worshiped her because of Electric Company. I even told my mom I wished Rita was my REAL mother! (I still feel bad about that!)

In about 6th grade I became obsessed with Guiness Book of World Records--that's how I learned she had all these other roles and was what we now call an EGOT.

She looks amazing, and is great on that One Day at a Time reboot.

Jerome Robbins was notorious for creating Mean Girls tension in all of his companies so I'd lay any blame of animosity between Natalie and Rita at his Capezios.

I love Rita and when I saw her in person about three years ago at a special screening on WSS, she looked amazing. She gave a talk about her experience with WSS, and it was all positive, but funny, and she talked about her life and told stories from her autobiography. She was just a delight. But I must say that while I'm very impressed she was able to wear her 1962 dress, and she looked great last night, I do think the neckline, the top of the dress in 1962 would have been a better choice than the top she chose.

I'm not sure the original bodice would have been more flattering. Even though she is in great shape today it's not the same shape was in when she first wore the dress. She's not as slander as she was. The black hair and black bodice framing her face isn't a look she could pull off today. Plus I think if at her age you can pull off a strapless gown I say go for it.
